Today for fun, I typed “What do veterinarians do?” in Google and started a search. What I found were statements like “…veterinarians diagnose and treat the diseases of animals”. Ugh! That’s a lot like doing an Internet search on birds and reading “birds fly”. I guess it’s correct but all the fascinating facts are missing. The fun is in discovering the details.

These animal doctors understood that to become a veterinarian you must enjoy science as much as you love animals. The truth is, many children love animals. Our latest video, Meet a Sea Turtle Veterinarian was a fantastic project to be a part of. I discovered a type of veterinarian that I didn’t even know existed – a doctor who focuses on the rehabilitation of injured and sick sea turtles. This veterinarian works not only for the conservation of the turtles but also for other native species in the area. What was even more inspiring was that this veterinarian found a patient need and built a hospital to serve it.

I am a veterinarian and I still learn something new about my profession every time I meet with another veterinarian. This is a profession with so much going on. You’ll need to work really hard to keep up. And trust me on this, the more you learn about veterinary medicine, the more exited you’ll be.

The animal doctors in our survey felt it was very important for you to talk with veterinarians in your area to learn all you can. You may not be old enough to volunteer at any animal hospitals just yet but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be talking to and hearing from veterinarians.
