The International Conference on Industrial Logistics (ICIL) 2012 will take
place in Croatia, from June 14th to June 16th 2012, hosted by the Faculty
of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb
and International Centre for Innovation and Industrial Logistics (ICIIL).
International Centre for Innovation and Industrial Logistics (ICIIL) is
a non-profit professional association which has been developing an
integrated view of Industrial Logistics, sharing and exchanging ideas
and research results among students, researchers, academics and
industrialists. The biannual International Conference on Industrial
Logistics (ICIL) is the main mean to attain these objectives worldwide,
moving from France 1993 to Brazil 1995, USA 1997, Russia 1999,
Okinawa 2001, Finland 2003, Uruguay 2005, Lithuania 2006, Israel
2008, again Brazil 2010 and Croatia 2012.
The conference will feature a multidisciplinary program that will
include original research results and contributions to the fields of
logistics and supply chain management. Organizing and Scientific
Committee gladly invite professionals, academics, students and industrialists
to send contributing papers to the Conference.

Presentation and publication of papers:
Submitted papers will be subject of reviews by at least two
independent reviewers. All accepted papers will be published in the
Conference Proceedings to be distributed during the Conference.
Oral presentations should take 15 minutes. The authors will have the
possibility of using computers for the presentations (Power Point).
There will be opportunity to present paper with poster in poster
section.
According to the Scientific Committee recommendations, the
authors of the selected papers will be invited to extend their papers
for publication in the following journals:

The notion that companies have both demand and supply chains, which require active management to maximize organization's effectiveness and efficiency, is well recognized. The demand chain comprises all the demand processes necessary to understand, create, and stimulate customer demand, whilst supply chain contains all the supply processes necessary to fulfill time, accuracy, and quality requirements of customers and the profitably of the supply chain. The need to coordinate these processes and their general management has been emphasized in both the demand and supply chain literature as well as in the emerging demand-supply chain management (DSCM) concept. It has been concluded that there is a lack of real-life based case study research addressing, how the different demand and supply processes influence each other, and how these processes effectively can be coordinated on intra and inter-organizational level. This implies that the concept and application of DSCM is still in its infancy and needs to be researched further from both demand and supply chain perspective. Hence, this special issue is aiming to contribute in the understanding of DSCM by analyzing the concept from a theoretical and practical perspective, determining what are the key principles that characterize the concept as well as to illustrate its appearance in practice. However, our main interest is in industrial case studies, and real-life implementations.

ELogistics Infrastructure and Services in The Middle Eastast

Due to the growing link between global supply chains and prime location, GCC countries are currently experiencing a strong demand for logistics services and infrastructure.

The recent explosion of infrastructure projects requires a proper understanding of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, risks, and success factors from the local and global point of view. This Forum aims to bring local and international policy makers, supply chain managers, and logistics managers together, to understand local needs.

This strong association with local projects, participation of the international academic community, and discussions involving local decision makers will undoubtedly set this conference apart from all others. The forum will address subjects related to Abu Dhabi's Master Plan and Economic Vision 2030, customized local requirements of infrastructure projects, and the development of global logistic services. In order to provide delegates with well rounded information and a hands-on grasp of concepts, The Global Logistics Forum will include three workshops involving various visits to significant infrastructure locations, as well as logistics service providers.

The first Global Logistics Forum is part of long-term strategic partnership between Abu Dhabi University and the TU Berlin Chair of Logistics and represents a first step in developing a long term, high quality programme of courses, events and knowledge transfer in the field of supply chain logistics.

Volcano reboots airspace

Building airplanes and airlines

While thinking volcanic ash and how much our world is depending on global air transportation, I have picked two interesting video clips related to airplanes and airlines. First one is a manufacturing video from Southwest Airlines and how their "Florida One" Boeing 737-700ER was built.

This is interesting, but from logistics point of view, even more interesting is how Southwest Airlines organize a 25 minute turnaround at airport.

There are many ways to run airline companies: pricing models vary, network may be based on point-to-point or hub and spoke models to name some differences. Running a low cost airline compared to traditional airlines can be very different albeit the planes might be similar. Here's a picture I found comparing these two generic airline strategies. ICIL visits Petrobras

On the fifth and final day of the ICIL 2010 conference the schedule was for an excursion to Transpetro's pipeline hub and routing station close to Rio de Janeiro. Transpetro is the logistical arm and fully-owned subsidiary of Petrobras, the formerly state-owned main oil company of Brasil, and they works foremost with the transportation and storage activities around oil and its byproducts, ethanol, biofuels and natural gas.

The excursion included a Q&A with the company's operational management, a tour of the plant's control center and finally a guided car trip around the plant's storage and routing fields. As an added bonus, a visit to CTDUT - the pipeline technology center testing facility and laboratory located on the premises. CTDUT upkeeps test loops for education and development of pig technology (pigs of course being the pipeline inspection gauge machines that travel inside a pipeline to assess the condition of the pipe's structure).

On the whole, and interesting field day by ICIL and Transpetro.

ICIL 2010 Rio de Janeiro: Day Three

Day three started with ICIIL officer elections and was followed by presentations. Here's some picks from the conference:

Thomas Makuschewitz presented A MIP for the integrated production and transportation scheduling of an OEM. This system takes network level for scheduling/sequencing by providing visibility for OEMs. The approach can be applied in situations when changes occur in resource availability and due dates.
Spens and Kovacs raised a very topic question "Back to basics: Is logistics again about cutting costs?"
Aragao et al's paper presented a case study from Aracruz Celulose – "Standard-hour" as logistics performance evaluation basic for trucks
Kekäle, Spens and Phusavat's study on hospital inventory management practices – "Understanding the human factor: The key to process improvement in service operations"

We also agreed today that the ICIIL proceedings papers will become publicly available at the ICIIL web site in near future.

Second day of the conference included many interesting presentations. The general presentation was given by Prof. Antonio Galvao Novaes on "Dynamic problems in logistics". Prof. Novaes gave many examples how dynamic perspective on logistics can yield better results, from multi-national companies to local warehousing and transport operations.

Other interesting highlights included:

Iara Tammela's presentation on international comparison of furniture industries and how time-based competition affects them.
Manos Tentzeris' presentation on near future inkjet-printed RFID's on paper and its potential logistics applications. According to him we are going to see commercial applications by large companies such as Toyota and Microsoft very soon.
Raul Pino presented a new software application for multimodality and container filling in 3D

ICIL 2010 Rio de Janeiro – 2010-03-08 First day

ICIL conference is currently running in Rio de Janeiro. The conference is hosted by IME military institute in very nice location with sea view towards Sugarloaf Mountain. Around 40 papers from 15 countries are included in proceedings. The conference remains rather small this year, but the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. Logistics modeling in its various topics, including algorithms, optimization, simulation and software development seem to be a strong driving force, albeit the proceedings book includes also case studies and more conceptual papers.

On the first day, the conference was officially opened by Head of IME, General Amir and the local Conference chair Cristina Sinay. We heard a general conference presentation by Prof. Khairy AH Kobbacy – "Trends in using artificial intelligence in logistics", which covered use of AI techniques in various logistics related applications.

After the first session of presentations, the group had nice time enjoying Welcome Cocktails at IME.

New Journal for 2011

Emerald Group Publishing is delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new journal for 2011: Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Co-edited by Dr. Gyöngyi Kovács and Professor Karen Spens, Hanken School of Economics, Finland, the journal will publish state of the art research in the field of humanitarian and development aid logistics and supply chain management. Logistics and supply chain management related articles in the context of disaster relief and development aid are of equal interest to the journal.

The Simio Object Paradigm (beyond ARENA)

Simio is a SImulation Modeling framework based on Intelligent Objects. This may be a bit different than other simulation packages that you may be familiar with, even those that market themselves as object oriented. Simio is designed from the ground up to support the object modeling paradigm; however it also supports the seamless use of multiple modeling paradigms including a process orientation and event orientation. It also fully supports both discrete and continuous systems, along with large scale applications based on agent-based modeling. These modeling paradigms can be freely mixed within a single model.

The intelligent objects are built by modelers and then may be reused in multiple modeling projects. Objects can be stored in libraries and easily shared. A beginning modeler may prefer to use pre-built objects from libraries; however the system is designed to make it easy for even beginning modelers to build their own intelligent objects for use in building hierarchical models. An object might be a machine, robot, airplane, customer, doctor, tank, bus, ship, or any other thing that you might encounter in your system. A model is built by combining objects that represent the physical components of the system. A Simio model looks like the real system. The model logic and animation is built as a single step. An object may be animated to reflect the changing state of the object.

For example, a forklift truck raises and lowers its lift, a robot opens and closes its gripper, and a battle tank turns its turret. The animated model provides a moving picture of the system in operation. Objects are built using the concepts of object orientation. However unlike other object oriented simulation systems, the process of building an object is very simple and completely graphical. There is no need to write programming code to create new objects. The activity of building an object in Simio is

identical to the activity of building a model – in fact there is no difference between an object and a model. This concept is central to the design of Simio. Whenever you build a model it is by definition an object that can be instantiated into another model. For example, if you combine two machines and a robot into a model of a work cell, the work cell model is itself an object that can then be instantiated any number of times into other models. The work cell is an object just like the machines and robot are objects.

Simio Intelligent Objects: The Future of Simulation

Simio is designed to simplify model building by promoting a modeling paradigm shift from the process orientation to an object orientation. Simio is a simulation modeling framework based on intelligent objects. The intelligent objects are built by modelers and then may be reused in multiple modeling projects. Although the Simio framework is focused on object-based modeling, it also supports a seamless use of multiple modeling paradigms including event, process, object, and agent-based modeling.

The Simio framework is a graphical object-oriented modeling framework as opposed to simply a set of classes in an object-oriented programming language that are useful for simulation modeling. The graphical modeling framework of Simio fully supports the core principles of object-oriented modeling without requiring programming skills to add new objects to the system.
