Ik heb destijds mijn beklag gedaan over MSN Messenger, dat het minder “sociaal” was. Niks meer nieuwe mensen leren kennen, gewoon één tegen één kwetteren, een soort telefoonlijn via tekst. Ik gebruikte het dan ook minder en minder, en verlangde terug naar een tijd dat iedereen die ik kende op IRC zat te chatten. Maar naarmate Facebook meer en meer doordrong bij alle lagen van de bevolking, werd al snel duidelijk dat dit volgende evolutionaire stap was. Bovendien zet ik nu mijn eerste stappen in Twitter, wat de perfecte aanvulling is. Los gekwebbel in de vrije ether, met volslagen vreemden.

Maar de laatste tijd begin ik op de feitelijke essentie te stoten van al die evoluties. We zijn gedoemd tot Information Overload. We worden gebombardeerd met informatie over onze vrienden, onze interesses, over dingen die we moeten kopen, over gebeurtenissen in de wereld. Ik heb altijd vrij goed om kunnen gaan met veel informatie, maar nu begin ik te begrijpen dat het alleen nog maar erger zal worden.

Omdat ik zelf evengoed opgegroeid ben in die album-traditie, stak het idee om Marvel comics te kopen als dunne blaadjes me enorm tegen. Ik heb helemaal geen zin om dingen die ik effectief wil lezen te gaan bewaren in zo van die plastiek mapjes. Gelukkig bundelt Marvel deze floppies ook regelmatig als collections, gecentreerd rond bepaalde verhaallijnen. Bovendien zorgen ze ervoor dat er in die hardcovers en trade paperbacks extra’s zitten, zoals extra artwork of interviews. Ideaal dus, voor een verzamelaar als ik.

Een belangrijk nadeel is echter dat die collecties veel te laat worden uitgebracht, maanden na de losse issues. Dus voor een erg spannende verhaallijn, die over meerdere collections loopt, moet ik enorm veel geduld uitoefenen om niet aan de verleiding van de floppies toe te geven.

Neem daar nog bij dat een aantal van die storylines eigenlijk crossovers zijn tussen verschillende strips, en je beseft dat je al beter niet zonder wat vooronderzoek naar de stripwinkel stapt.

Daarover had ik het dus, toen ik zei dat sommige blog-posts wat meer tijd vragen. Ik was bezig met het in kaart brengen van strips verwant aan Messiah Complex. Blijkt dat het er meer zijn dan ik eerst dacht, en sommige collections worden pas uitgebracht eind dit jaar!

Hou in gedachten dat Marvel tientallen strips publiceert, op maandelijkse basis, en je hebt het over collecties van duizenden issues.

Mijn verzameling is veel kleiner dan dit, en zo wil ik het graag houden.

Omdat ik niet de tijd (of het geld!) heb om volwaardige Marvelofiel te worden, heb ik me toegelegd op enkele reeksen die me echt interesseren, en die iets minder bekend zijn, zoals Dr. Strange en Cable. Ook recentere verhaallijnen, zoals Messiah War, Divided We Stand en Secret Invasion probeer ik te volgen. Mijn lieflijke wederhelft volgt dan weer X-Factor, X-Force, Deadpool en Young X-Men. Zo kunnen we netjes alles onder mekaar verdelen, en zo hou ik deze nieuwe interesse en beetje onder controle.

Maar zo eenvoudig is het spijtig genoeg niet …

Ik vond het wel interessant om stream-gewijs naar muziek te luisteren, en een soort historiek te hebben van mijn “favoriete” nummers, maar in de praktijk gebruikte ik het niet vaak meer. Het idee van last.fm is dat je nieuwe muziek ontdekt, maar veel verrassingen en aha-momenten heb ik niet beleefd. Eigenlijk draait het hele concept weer rond “het sociale web“, en dat zegt me op zich niet zoveel. Ik wil gewoon leuke speeltjes om mezelf mee te amuseren, ik hoef niet noodzakelijk mijn muziekkeuze te valideren tegenover andere mensen. Sure, de integratie met Facebook was amusant, maar iemand die voortdurend zit te roepen naar welke muziek hij luistert heeft zero waarde en is eerder irritant. En eigenlijk mis ik Pandora Radio gewoon.
