6 Things Super Successful Companies Have in Common

Most start-ups fail--but the extraordinary few that succeed practice six shared habits.

Based my interviews with over 200 entrepreneurs, I’ve developed the Hungry Start-up Strategy Index (HSSI) that scores a start-up from 0 to 100 based on how well it does these six relative to the world’s best.

What are your start-up’s odds for success? Based on anecdotal evidence, they are not good. I have spoken with venture capitalists who say that in a year they review 1,000 business plans and invest in two or three.

Of the other 997, perhaps some get funded by VCs, others bootstrap or get funds from friends and family, and still others give up. Of the ones that get funded, typically one out of 10 is a big success. And one in 10,000 gets to be worth $1 billion or more.

Two extraordinarily successful start-ups I have interviewed - Westborough, Mass.-based SimpliVity -- its hardware lowers the total cost of ownership for corporate IT departments and Waltham, Mass.-based Actifio -- a maker of appliances to lower the cost of copying data, both of which extensively -- have HSSIs that are close to 100.

Here is what it takes to get that score.

1. Setting goals. Start-ups almost always lack the cash to pay market-beating salaries to top talent. One way that they do this is by setting goals that talented people - founding executive, investors, and staff -- find irresistibly compelling.

To practice the first habit well, you must do a great job on these three goals:

Mission: Enduring purpose of the start-up
Long-Term Goal: Approach to realizing investment return
Short-Term Goals. Clear short-term milestones

Based on their talented executive teams, excellent professionals, and world-class investors, SimpliVity and Actifio have clearly done a great job of setting these three goals.

2. Picking markets. A start-up could pick any market in which to sell its product. But the most successful start-ups pick markets that pass four tests:

Its founder is passionate about the industry
Its founder has superior industry knowledge
Strong forces drive its industry growth
The start-up is solving a customer problem that the market ignores

SimpliVity and Actifio have picked markets wisely as evidenced by their extremely rapid growth - over five-fold.

3. Raising capital. The most successful start-ups preserve control while obtaining the capital that they need to fuel their growth. Moreover, when they do raise venture capital, they do so with firms that can help them expand due to their brand, connections, and capabilities.

A winning start-up’s approach to raising capital passes three tests:

It self-funds until expansion phase
Its researches the founder’s fit with the VC firm partner
It creates a competitive bidding process to obtain attractive investment terms

SimpliVity and Actifio both self-funded until they had developed working prototypes and won customers. Once established, they raised capital from firms that have helped them expand.

4. Building the team. As a founder, you can’t do everything yourself. A successful entrepreneur is humble enough to know her strengths and weaknesses and to build a company that attracts and motivates talented people who can work together to pursue the company’s goals.

To do that, winning start-up CEOs do the following:

· Identify the skills needed for success
· Add executives to complement their strengths and weaknesses
· Attract and motivate top talent
· Link their incentives to clear values

5. Gaining share. Given the odds of failure, potential customers don’t want to buy a product from a start-up. To overcome those odds, winning venture do the following:

Build a product that offers more value for money
Develop improved product versions fast
Sell to new market segments

SimpliVity - its product reduces total cost of ownership three-fold -- and Actifio - for every $1 a customer invests in its product, the customer gets $15 in cost savings -- both do that.

6. Adapting to change. Finally, the most successful start-ups adapt well to changing customer needs, upstart competitors, and new technology.

To that end, they do the following:

Monitor customer needs, competitors and technology
Pinpoint critical threats and opportunities
Modify products and pricing to boost growth

Both SimpliVity and Actifio have altered their marketing strategies and product lines to respond to changes in boost their growth.

En el viaje comprendí que de español no sabía nada,
y decidí estudiar filología hispana en Salamanca.

Terminada la carrera yo viajé a Ciudad de México,
sentía que necesitaba enriquecer mi léxico.
Muy pronto vi que con el español tenía una tara,
y decidí estudiar otros tres años
en Guadalajara.

Cuatro meses en Bolivia,
un post grado en Costa Rica,
y unos cursos de lectura con un profesor de Cuba.
Tanto estudio y tanto esfuerzo, y al final tu ya lo ves:

NI AL DERECHO NI AL REVÉS!

Que difícil es hablar el español,
porque todo lo que dices tiene otra definición.
Que difícil es hablar el español,
yo ya me doy por vencido “para mi país me voy.”

En Venezuela compré con mi plata una camisa de pana,
Y mis amigos me decían ‘Ese es mi pana, ese es mi pana!’
Y en Colombia el porro es un ritmo alegre que se canta,
pero todos me miran mal cuando yo digo que me encanta.

Los chilenos dicen cuando hay algo lejos “que esta a la chucha”,
y en Colombia el mal olor de las axilas “es la chucha”,
mientras tanto en Uruguay a ese olor le dicen ‘chivo’,
y el diccionario define al chivo como a una ‘cabra con barbuchas’.

Y cambiando una vocal la palabra queda “chucho”,
y “chucho” es un perrito en Salvador y Guatemala.
Y en Honduras es tacaño, y a Jesús le dicen Chucho,
con tantas definiciones, como se usa esa puta palabra!?

Chucho es frío en Argentina,
Chucho en Chile es una cárcel,
Chucho en México si hay alguien,
con el don de ser muy hábil.

El chucho de Chucho es un chucho ladrando,
y por chucho a Chucho lo echaron al chucho,
el Chucho era frío y lo agarró un chucho
-“Que chucho”- decía,
-“extraño a mi chucho”.

yo ya me doy por vencido “para mi país me voy.”

Comencé por aprender los nombres de los alimentos,
pero fríjol es ‘poroto’ y ‘habichuela’ al mismo tiempo.
Y aunque estaba confundido con lo que comía en la mesa,
de algo yo estaba seguro,
un ‘strawberry‘ es una fresa.

Y que sorpresa cuando en México a mi me dijeron ‘fresa’
por tener ropa de Armani y pedir un buen vino en la mesa.

Con la misma ropa me dijeron ‘cheto’ en Argentina.
-“Cheto es fresa yo pensé”-, y pregunté en el mercado en la esquina:

-“Aquí están buenas las chetas?”-, y la cajera se enojó.
-“Andate a la re (peep) que te remil parió!”

Y -“Fresas, parce”- me dijo un colombiano mientras vió que yo mareado me sentaba en una silla.
-“Hermanito no sea bruto, y apúntese en la mano:
En Buenos Aires a la fresa le dicen frutilla”.

Ya yo me cansé de pasar por idiota
digo lo que a mí me enseñan y nadie entiende ni jota
y si “ni jota” no se entiende pues pregunte en Bogotá.
Yo me rindo, me abro,
me voy pa’ Canadá!

Un ‘pastel’ es un ‘ponqué’, y un ‘ponqué’ es una ‘torta’
y una ‘torta’ el puñetazo que me dio una española en la boca!

Ella se veía muy linda caminando por la playa
Yo quería decirle algún piropo para conquistarla.
Me acerqué y le dije lo primero que se me ocurrió,
Se volteó, me gritó, me escupió y me cacheteó!

-‘Capullo’- yo le dije, porque estaba muy bonita.

En España al liquido que suelta la carne la gente le dice ‘jugo’,
Por otro lado en España al jugo de frutas la gente le dice ‘zumo’.
Me dijeron también que el sumo pontífice manda en la religión,
y yo siempre creí que un sumo era en gordo en tanga peleando en Japón.

Conocí a una andaluza, se llamaba Concepción
Su marido le decía “Concha de mi corazón”.

-“Vámonos para Argentina, le dije en una ocasión”.
-“Yo lo siento pero si me dices ‘concha’ creo que allá mejor no voy.”
-“Pero Concha que te pasa, si es un muy lindo país,
hay incluso el que compara Buenos Aires con Paris.”
-“De mi apodo allá se burlan de la forma más mugrienta
y siempre hay cada pervertido que de paso se calienta”.

Y con tantos anglicismos todo es más complicado
si traduces textualmente no tienen significado:

-“I will call you back”-,
te diría cualquier gringo,
-“Yo te llamo pa trá”-,
te dicen en Puelto Lico!

Y ‘ojos’ es ‘eyes’, ‘ice’ es ‘hielo’, ‘yellow’ el color de la yema del huevo!
‘Oso’ es ‘bear’, y ‘ver’ es ‘see’,
‘Si’ es una nota que en inglés es ‘B’…

Y aparte ‘B’ es una ‘abeja’ y también es ‘ser’,
y ‘Sir’ Michael le decía a mi profe de inglés.

Y el que cuida tu edificio es un ‘guachiman,’
y con los chicos de tu barrio sales a ‘hanguear’.
Y la glorieta es un ‘romboy’,
y te vistes con ‘overol’.

Porqué tiene que ser tan difícil saber como diablos hablar español!?!?

No es que no quiera, perdí la paciencia
la ciencia de este idioma no me entra en la consciencia!
yo creía que cargando un diccionario en mi mochila,
y anotando en un diario todas las palabras que durante el día aprendía,

y leyendo, viajando, charlando, estudiando

El idioma español seduce al mundo

Colombia se destaca por su nivel de enseñanza y su ambiente

Amor, estudio, trabajo, negocios o simplemente el espíritu de aventura han motivado a miles de extranjeros alrededor del mundo a venir a nuestro país a aprender español.

Es así que Colombia se ha convertido, junto con Argentina, Chile y México, en una de las potencias más importantes del continente en la enseñanza del español como segunda lengua, entre otros factores por "el avance en seguridad que se ha tenido en los últimos años y los esfuerzos del Gobierno para mejorar la imagen del país en el exterior", afirma Mary Naranjo de Reyes, coordinadora académica del Programa de Español para Extranjeros de la Universidad de La Sabana, en Bogotá.

Así las cosas, este trabajo se ha venido incrementando en varias ciudades, y "desde el mismo momento en que llegan los hablantes de otras lenguas se encuentran inmersos aprendiendo no solo el nuevo idioma, sino que comienzan a interactuar con los colombianos", asegura.

Y no son pocos quienes nos visitan. Muchos llegan a trabajar en compañías internacionales, a hacer inversiones; otros a hacer turismo y unos más invitados por colombianos que conocieron en su país de origen.

Sobre el terreno

Quienes vienen, dice Naranjo de Reyes, se benefician de "la práctica de la lengua en contextos reales y la utilización del idioma en una amplia variedad de aspectos de la vida cotidiana, lo que contribuye a mejorar el conocimiento de una realidad del país diferente a la percepción que se tenía en su lugar de origen".

Para Álvaro Castañeda, director del Instituto de Lenguas de la Universidad Distrital (Ilud), la mejor estrategia para lograr un proceso efectivo de aprendizaje es involucrarse en las actividades cotidianas de una persona nativa; es decir, "hacer las clases en los museos, restaurantes, sitios de interés y otros lugares en donde converjan el aprendizaje con la práctica real del español".

Un tema fundamental, como explica Lourdes Rey, coordinadora académica del Instituto de Idiomas de la Universidad del Norte, en Barranquilla, quien destaca "un aprendizaje significativo, es decir, que el estudiante mezcle la enseñanza tradicional con actividades culturales y deportivas que mantengan su motivación y le permitan un avance rápido en la adquisición del lenguaje y en el mejoramiento de su uso en contextos prácticos".

De manera global

Y para que no haya dudas del nivel, un buen número de universidades colombianas hacen parte del Sistema Internacional de Certificación del Español como Lengua Extranjera (Sicele), liderado por el Instituto Cervantes en España.

Colombia, al estar vinculada al Sicele, explica Magda Bogotá, directora del Departamento de Lenguas de la Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, tiene como tarea conformar redes que, más allá de buscar la certificación de la lengua, se han dedicado a la formación académica y a la investigación en esta área, como es el caso de EnRedele, con nodos de trabajo en Bogotá, Costa Caribe y Eje Cafetero.

Tiene 25 años y es empleado bancario. Decidió aprender español para poder trabajar en Colombia, ya que la entidad en la que labora tiene sus oficinas de Latinoamérica en Bogotá y Sao Paulo. Espera alcanzar un nivel alto de español y ascender en su compañía.

- Truls Danielsen, de Noruega. Profesor y locutor de 50 años, siempre ha sentido un gusto especial por el español. Conoce las reglas básicas, por sus viajes por Latinoamérica y España, y escogió a nuestro país "debido a que tiene el acento más neutro. Deseo aprenderlo para regresar a mi país a enseñarlo".
- Adele Mathilde Hoarau, de Francia. Tiene 22 años y quiere complementar las lecciones recibidas en la escuela y viajar por Latinoamérica. "Quiero alcanzar el nivel suficiente para ser traductora", dice.

- Will Jenkins, de 22 años, de Australia. Aprender español es todo un reto. Escogió a Colombia, entre otras cosas, porque es un lugar "interesante, económico y será una gran historia para contar al volver a casa".

La UNESCO delcara al mariachi mexicano patrimonio de la Humanidad

La designación del mariachi como patrimonio inmaterial "significa el afianzamiento de este tipo de música y la protección de sus características que corren el peligro de transformarse demasiado, por ser una práctica tan universal y popular"
Los grupos musicales mariachis interpretan, además de canciones de su propio género, boleros, rancheras y baladas.

La música mariachi mexicana ingresó este domingo en la Lista de Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad de la Unesco por una decisión unánime del comité de expertos reunido en la isla indonesia de Bali.
Un grupo de 13 mariachis irrumpió en la sala de la convención y entonó "El son de la negra", una de las melodías más emblemáticas de este género, para celebrar la decisión de los especialistas.
Éstos apreciaron la expresión única del mariachi, compuesta por música de cuerdas, canto y trompeta, centrada en la vida en comunidad y que condensa la identidad mexicana a pesar de que surgió en estados como Jalisco, Nayarit o Michoacán y Colima.

"El mariachi, con el paso del tiempo, se ha ido convirtiendo en algo representativo de todo México", declaróAnna Goycoolea, coordinadora del programa del Patrimonio Inmaterial mexicano y representante de la candidatura en Bali.

La designación del mariachi como patrimonio inmaterial "significa el afianzamiento de este tipo de música y la protección de sus características que corren el peligro de transformarse demasiado, por ser una práctica tan universal y popular", dijo Goycoolea. "Para los mexicanos oír al mariachi es como escuchar el himno nacional, una cuestión de identidad", agregó.

Los grupos musicales mariachis interpretan, además de canciones de su propio género, boleros, rancheras y baladas. "No hay ninguna expresión musical mexicana más difundida por el mundo, y esta universalidad tenía que verse reflejada en la lista de patrimonio inmaterial", indicó el secretario de Cultura de Jalisco, Alejandro Cravioto. "Es una tradición que se ha transmitido de generación en generación y continúa viva entre los más jóvenes", añadió.

Cravioto dijo que el mariachi acompaña todo el recorrido vital de los mexicanos ya que "está presente desde el bautizo hasta el entierro", y señaló que, junto con la comida, es el único elemento propio que los emigrantes se llevan siempre consigo. También transmitió el compromiso del Gobierno mexicano de proteger y promover los valores culturales del mariachi dentro y fuera del país.

Hi friends.
I am sharing a post of a very popular Mexican song called
"Lastima que seas ajena" which means something like "Too bad you're with other 'guy' ". This is a good excuse to practice the listening, learn some new vocab and to review the present subjuctive. Sentences like "que seas ajena", and "que no te tenga" may be a good grammar practice.

How can you possibly maintain fluency in two foreign languages — let alone five or six — if the opportunities to use them are months or years apart?

In 20 minutes, I leave from JFK for Iceland, then Scotland, and then a circle in Europe that will include Oktoberfest in Munich. Germany is strategic, as I want to “reactivate” my German before the media tour there.

Few topics provoke more anxiety and depression in language lovers than the prospect of forgetting a hard-earned language. After you return to your English-dominated homeland, how do you maintain your newfound skills, which seem to have yogurt-like expiration dates? Having juggled close to a dozen languages — keeping some and losing others — and having suffered the interference that goes it all, my answer now is simple: you don’t.

It is easier, and much more time-efficient, to catch up versus keep up.

Why struggle to maintain a foreign tongue in the US, for example, when you most often gain nothing more than bad habits? If you acquire the language in a native environment and attain an intermediate or advanced level of fluency, you can reactivate your language skills in four weeks or less when approached methodically. Would you rather spend four hours per week on your new language, only to see it get sick and bloated with a distinctly foreign-sounding twang, or spend two hours per day for 1-3 weeks and be right back at your fluency level from years prior?

I began reactivation of irretrievable German just over a week ago and can already hold a decent conversation. This is not a testament to my ability, but to the efficacy of a process that begins with massive passive exposure and avoids time-consuming review from square one:

1. Days 1-7: German films with English subtitles for at least two hours each evening for one week.

2. Days 3+: 10-20 pages of dialogue-rich manga (Japanese comics, here translated into German, that can be ordered in most languages from comic stores in your target country) for 30 minutes each morning and prior to bed. I’m a big fan of One Piece.

3. On the plane: Read a phrasebook in its entirety for active recall practice of common phrases (45 minutes of study alternated with 15 minutes of rest â€“ this takes advantage of what is called the “primacy and recency” effect).

4. Upon arrival: Continue with manga and grammar reference checks as needed, using an electronic dictionary to reactivate vocabulary from conversation that is familiar but not understood.

5. Weeks 2-3: Thirty to sixty Vis-Ed flashcards daily. This seems like a lot, but most will have been covered in steps 1-3 â€“ using active recall (English to German). Vis-Ed compiles its sets of flashcards from word frequency lists and includes sample phrases for usage. I begin flashcards after three or four days in-country.

The sooner you decide to reactivate languages when needed, instead of maintaining them for an unspecified time in the future, the more leisure time you will have and the less diluted your language abilities will be when you need them.

Don’t fear losing languages if you’ve attained real fluency. They’re just in temporary storage with the covers pulled over them.

The Nature of Culture

The Colombia: The Nature of Culture program at the 2011 Smithsonian Folklife Festival celebrates the rich bio-cultural diversity of Colombia and explores how Colombian cultural expressions are inextricably connected to their distinctive environments. Colombia leads the world in the number of bird species, has the second highest number of varieties of amphibians and plants, and is third in the diversity of its reptiles. Because of its biological and environmental diversity, Colombia is home to some of the world’s most distinctive cultures and traditions. This year’s festival program shows how these cultures survive and thrive through the dynamic relationship between people and nature.

The program highlights six ecosystems, from the Andes mountains to the Amazon Rainforest, Andean Savannah, Southeastern Plains, the hilly coffee region of Caldas, and the urban centers of Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. Roughly one hundred Colombian artists will sing, dance, prepare food, tell stories, celebrate the harvest, and demonstrate religious ceremonies, traditional medicine practices, and agricultural sustainability at the Festival.

Among the traditions highlighted are:

Gold-mining activities from the Atrato River in the Pacific Rainforest, such as panning, work songs, filigree jewelry-making, and gold trading;
Basket and cloth weaving utilizing the diverse fibers and reeds found in the Andean Savannah;
Leather crafts from the Orinoco Plains that exemplify the ranching lifestyle, such as cotizas (traditional shoes), campechanas (hammocks), and ranching gear;
Crafts and performances integral to community celebrations and rituals from the Momposino Flood Plains, including religious sculpture, drumming music, carnival, and foodways;
Activities surrounding coffee growing, including agro-tourism, guadua/bamboo architecture, coffee-picking basket weaving, and mule and jeep transportation.

Colombia: The Nature of Culture program offers a forum for Colombian artists and performers to demonstrate their wisdom and knowledge through their cultural practices. For example, a Mompox drum maker discusses how his tradition depends on protecting the fragile flood plains that contain the wood used to build his instruments. A basket weaver from Filandia demonstrates the creative solutions she has found to maintain the vitality of her tradition, at a time when the industrial coffee workers do not use her baskets for picking coffee. Visitors can learn how Willys Jeeps built for World War II now typically transport coffee and bananas from farms to local markets; children from school to home; and families moving their household goods. Successful packing depends on the skills of the yipero who draws on the knowledge of packing a mule, which is still practiced in the steeper mountain regions.

Waves of violence and the lack of economic opportunities have displaced people from rural areas to the cities—a pressing issue in Colombia especially among youth. A number of organizations have provided innovative programs to engage these youth in art and cultural activities. What’s more, in the cities, the interaction of traditional culture with contemporary life is giving rise to new customs and forms of expression.

The Colombia: The Nature of Culture festival program offers audiences a window into the country’s unique cultural traditions in order to learn more about the creativity and vitality of Colombia’s diverse population.

How to Learn Any Language in 3 Months

Language learning need not be complicated.

Principles of cognitive neuroscience and time management can be applied to attain conversational fluency (here defined as 95%+ comprehension and 100% expressive abilities) in 1-3 months. Some background on my language obsession, from an earlier post on learning outside of classes:

From the academic environments of Princeton University (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian) and the Middlebury Language Schools (Japanese), to the disappointing results observed as a curriculum designer at Berlitz International (Japanese, English), I have sought for more than 10 years to answer a simple question: why do most language classes simply not work?

The ideal system — and progression — is based on three elements in this order…

1. Effectiveness (Priority)
2. Adherence (Interest)
3. Efficiency (Process)

Effectiveness, adherence, and efficiency refer to the “what”, “why”, and “how” of learning a target language, respectively. In simple terms, you first decide what to learn, based on usage frequency (priority); you then filter materials based on your likelihood of continued study and review, or adherence (interest); lastly, you determine how to learn the material most efficiently (process).

Let’s cover each in turn. This post will focus on vocabulary and subject matter. For learning grammar, I suggest you read this short article. For “reactivating” forgotten languages — like high school Spanish — this sequence will do the trick.

Effectiveness: If you select the wrong material, it does not matter how you study or if you study – practical fluency is impossible without the proper tools (material). Teachers are subordinate to materials, just as cooks are subordinate to recipes.

Adherence: Review, and multiple exposures to the same material, will always present an element of monotony, which must be countered by an interest in the material. Even if you select the most effective material and efficient method, if you don’t adhere with repeated study, effectiveness and efficiency mean nothing. In other words: can you persist with the material and method you’ve chosen? If not, less effective materials or methods will still be better. The best approach means nothing if you don’t use it.

By analogy, if sprinting uphill with bowling balls in each hand were the most effective way to lose body fat, how long would the average person adhere to such a program?

If you have no interest in politics, will you adhere to a language course that focuses on this material? Ask yourself: Can I study this material every day and adhere until I reach my fluency goals? If you have any doubt, change your selection. Oftentimes, it is best to select content that matches your interests in your native language. Do not read about something that you would not read about in English, if English is your native language (e.g. don’t read Asahi Shimbun if you don’t read newspapers in English). Use the target language as a vehicle for learning more about a subject, skill, or cultural area of interest.

Do not use material incongruent with your interests as a vehicle for learning a language – it will not work.

Efficiency: It matters little if you have the best material and adherence if time-to-fluency is 20 years. The ROI won’t compel you. Ask yourself: Will this method allow me to reach accurate recognition and recall with the fewest number of exposures, within the shortest period of time? If the answer is no, your method must be refined or replaced.

An Example of Effectiveness (80/20) in Practice

Pareto’s Principle of 80/20 dictates that 80% of the results in any endeavor come from 20% of the input, material, or effort.

We can adapt this principle and prioritize material based on its recorded likelihood and frequency of usage. To understand 95% of a language and become conversational fluent may require 3 months of applied learning; to reach the 98% threshold could require 10 years. There is a point of diminishing returns where, for most people, it makes more sense to acquire more languages (or other skills) vs. add a 1% improvement per 5 years.

If you were a student of English (though the list can be adapted to most languages), the following words would deliver the greatest ROI per hour invested for the initial 1-3 weeks of study:

The first 25 of the above words make up about 1/3 of all printed material in English. The first 100 comprise 1/2 of all written material, and the first 300 make up about 65% percent of all written material in English. Articles and tense conjugations that can often be omitted in some languages or learned for recognition (understanding) but not recall (production).

Most frequency lists are erroneously presented as the “most common words” in English, with no distinction made between written and spoken vocabulary. The 100 most common words as used in speech are considerably different, and this distinction applies to any target language.

Individual word frequency will vary between languages (especially pronouns, articles, and possessives), but differences are generally related to frequency rank, rather than complete omission or replacement with a different term. The above two lists are surprisingly applicable to most popular languages.

Content and vocabulary selection beyond the most common 300-500 words should be dictated by subject matter interest. The most pertinent questions will be “What will you spend your time doing with this language?”

If necessary, the most closely related rephrasing would be “What do I currently spend my time doing?” It bears repeating: do not read about something that you would not read about in your native language. Use the target language as a vehicle for learning more about a subject, skill, or cultural area of interest. Poor material never produces good language.

Feed your language ability foods you like, or you will quit your “diet” and cease study long before you achieve any measurable level of proficiency.

As a personal example, I used martial arts instructional manuals to compete effectively in judo while a student in Japan. My primary goal was to learn throws and apply them in tournaments. To avoid pain and embarrassment, I had tremendous motivation to learn the captions of the step-by-step diagrams in each instructional manual. Language development was a far secondary priority.

One might assume the crossover of material to other subjects would be minimal, but the grammar is, in fact, identical. The vocabulary may be highly specialized, but I eclipsed the grammatical ability of 4 and 5-year students of Japanese within 2 months of studying and applying sports-specific instruction manuals.

The specialization of my vocabulary didn’t present a single problem in communication, it is important to note, as I was spending 80% of my free time training with people who also used judo-speak and other vocabulary unique to sports training and athletic development.

Once the framework of grammar has been transferred to long-term memory, acquiring vocabulary is a simple process of proper spaced repetition, which will be the subject of a dedicated future post.

In the meantime, don’t let languages scare you off. It’s a checklist and a process of finding material you enjoy with a good frequency ROI.
