Back Up and Running!!!

I am super happy to announce that after our exhausting move across country we finally have the internet again! I'm back!

If you are interested in the story of our journey let me know and I will upload it to our San Luis Valley Homestead blog.

I will soon be updating you on all of my crochet madness as well. I have made a dress and matching scarf for my daughter for her first day of school (it was way too big even though I used the 4t size pattern and she is 6!), lots of bath poufs (a new favorite pattern), finished a slythern baby blanket (about damn time), lacy boot cuffs and my favorite a Deathstar for my oldest son's birthday!

I also have plans to create a crochet along 12" block swap group. The finished design will create a sampler blanket with each block using a different pattern. Along the way I will be crocheting for my swap partners and a block for myself. My afghan will be made with Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo Yarn, Gray Heather. This way I will have a great view of some of my favorite patterns just by looking at one afghan. I hate having to go through a bag of swatches to find the one I want.

Have you ever realized that sometime your swatches do not come out to the same size as if it was supposed to even though you used the same hook size as the pattern?

My mamaw (grandmother in cajun) taught me the very basics of crocheting when I was a tiny little nerd. I had to learn how to read patterns, and all of the stitches beyond SC! I now create my own patterns just with an idea of what I want it to look like. I credit that to my other mamaw that taught me how to sew using and creating patterns. So here I take all of the things these amazing women taougt me and bring them together to show my readers how to make crochet more fun and a whole lot more organized. Along the way I'll share tips and tricks that I learned the hard way along with a short video series.

Getting ready for the move...

So in 139 days we are moving 1200 miles across the country. That is a long distance for me. The longest move I have ever made was 100 miles.

I have been working on my PhD (Projects half Done). I also had a fantastic new idea to use up my scrap yarn that didn't take forever!

I will give you a hint about my new project...

I am basing it on a pattern I found on Raverly. However, I am using a different hook and yarn. Isn't it so much fun to experiment with patterns? This has lead me to discover a new style of crochet that I am absolutely in love with. I am still working out the kinks with it right now, but I plan to upload all the details as soon as it is finished.

What ideas do you have to use up leftover yarn? What is the best way to store / pack yarn?

Have you ever seen those scarves made from ribbon yarn? Or maybe you found a ton of it on clearance and had to buy it, but you had no idea what to do with it when you got it home. Finished Tunisian Wingspan

I am sorry it took so long to post this. If you have been following along you know I was going to attempt this amazing new project. This project had a lot of firsts for me! I have never used wool before this, I didn't even know what Tunisian crochet was before I found this pattern and it was the first shawl I ever made.

I was very sick between Thanksgiving and New Years, so I didn't get to finish it on time for the Nerd Wars challenge. It worked out though because I submitted it to detention in HPKCHC for January.

Without further adieu let me show you some pics of the finished shawl...

Don't I look cheesy in my smurf shirt? Haha. Well it doesn't get too cold in South Louisiana even in January, so shawls are a rare find here!

About the Yarn...

Thanks again to the amazing Tiffany (a fellow Slytherin and Nerd Warrior) from Sunset Stiches for custom making her Bellatrix Luvs Voldemort Self Striping Sock Yarn in the 100% merino base for me. I cannot say enough about this yarn! It is so soft and the stripes look so good in this pattern.

About the Pattern...

I LOVE this pattern! I am so glad that I have found this! I have always drooled over the beautiful wingspans that I would see knitters submit on Nerd Wars. I was always so jealous. I gave up trying to knit about 18 years ago when I realized crochet was much more my style. When I came across the Tunisian Wingspan by Amy Depew and Beth Graham. I fell in love! Finally a wingspan for crocheters! There are many options with this pattern. I chose to use the Trs for this shawl because I wanted to follow the pattern as it was such a major first for me. This pattern was super easy to follow and worked up lovely!

Future Plans...

I am planning to make another soon using a different yarn from her shop and a different stitch using the same pattern. I would love to use the Tunisian Knit Stitch next time to get a different look. Maybe I will use Sunset Stitches Slyther On Slytherin Self Striping Sock Yarn or Merlotte's Fingering Weight Yarn. Either way you know I LOVE green and now I LOVE merino!

Free Harry Potter Inspired House Scarf Crochet Pattern

Free Crochet Pattern : Harry Potter Inspired Super Bulky House Scarf

I have been crocheting for over 20 years, but I still love the simple easy ones the best.

I finally got sorted out in HPKCHC! Sir Hat decided to put me into Slytherin! Imagine that! ^_^

I designed this super bulky house scarf last term for Herbology class.

I am offering it as a free Ravelry download now!

(Mainly because I hate paying for patterns!)

Whether you choose Slytherin or a different house I have included suggested colorways for all the houses in the pattern. It comes out to be pretty large, but you could use worsted weight with a H hook to get a smaller scarf.

Here is my boys tangled up in it like the Devil's Snare. They had way too much fun testing it out!

I hope that 2013 was good for you!

I had a rough end of the year. My grandfather has been sick in the hospital and my little girl and I have been sick at home and have not been able to visit him. Also, I did not submit anything in December to Nerd Wars. I was barely feeling good enough to make a few quick scarves for my aunts and grandmother. I took pictures, with my new Nikon D3200 my hubby bought me. I just need to figure out how to upload them.

In 2014 I plan to...

...continue my education and work even harder on my Bachelors in Graphic Design. I almost have it.

...be nicer and more understanding to my three lovely kids.

...take more pictures of my kids, family and friends.

...make and stick to a meal plan.

...make more crochet patterns.

...get back into the craft fair circuit with my crochet goodies in the fall.

...visit our beautiful land in San Luis Valley, Colorado (and take tons of photos).

...spend more time with my hubby.

...organize my home (this is on my list every year ^_^).

Learing Tunisian Crochet

I am so excited that my wool and my new hooks will arrive in the mail tomorrow!

I thought I would share with you Lesson 2 in Mikey's Learn Tunisian Series. I really love how fun this guy is.

I am very anxious to get started with this new skill. I have been working on my afghan from around the world, and my daughter's fairy blanket. I will post photos as soon as I can for both of them.

Discovery: Learn a new skill

I have been crocheting for 22 years. It wasn't until a year ago that I started working with Amigurumi and last Christmas I completed my first full afghan for my grandfather.

After being prompted to try something new by a Nerd Wars challenge I have decided to try Tunisian crochet. Oddly enough I found these odd looking bamboo crochet hooks with a 48" tail and I had to know what they were.

After asking my teammates I discovered Tunisian crochet. I have never seen anything like this before although I know it is a very old form of crochet. I guess living in South Louisiana sometimes shelters us from how things are done in cold weather. Most of my crochet has always been home, and toys. I am just recently starting to crochet accessories and clothing (within the last 3 years).

My ravelry friend, Tiffany, has a great yarn shop where I will be purchasing some wool to use for this wonderful project.

I have already found a great shawl pattern that I hope to use. It is based on a knitting pattern that is very beautiful. The shawl below on the left is the crochet one and the one on the right is the knit one.

So if you would like to crochet this lovely shawl along with me I have included the free pattern link and I will include a video tutorial for Tunisian crochet. I will keep updating as this progresses.

Getting into the grove

I finished working with Slytherin as a NQFY. I feel like I did well and I would have done better if I wasn't so caught up in the Nerd Wars challenges. I am hoping to get sorted into Slytherin for the winter 2014 term. Wish me luck.

I was having fun on Doll Divine and of course I was sorted into Slytherin in their student maker. Here is the doll I made of me.

I then turned changed it up a bit and made it into a ravatar.

I am pretty excited to finally get sorted after following along for 2 terms. I think I am pretty much ready to get some serious points. I love crafting with a purpose.

Team spirit: Michonne has a lot of headbands to fashionably keep her dreadlocks out of her face while kicking zombie ass. I used Sari Silk to get colors to match her headbands she wears on Season 3 of The Walking Dead.

Team Unity: This is a gift for Michonne from Season 3 of The Walking Dead. Although Michonne has a lot of headbands, she may not have any warm ones. I made this one wide enough to also be an ear warmer, so that she could wear it during the cold winter months and look fabulous while killing her some zombies.

A written description of how your project answers the challenge: The colors in these squares were inspired by the beautiful aurora borealis. I have never had the pleasure of seeing them in person (I live in South Louisiana), but I do love looking at photos of them.

A written description of how your project answers the challenge: I made this red lanyard for holding my membership card when I am at the local zoo. We get discounts on everything in the zoo including all of the food booths, so it’s very handy to have your membership card ready to scan.

Team spirit: This would be handy for Felipe to wear so that he could have his security clearance card handy at all times in the Atlanta nursing home. During season 1 of the Walking Dead we see that; Felipe was working as a special care provider at the nursing home. Once the outbreak struck and people began turning into walkers, all the nurses and doctors ran away and left the patients to die. Guillermo and Felipe decided to stay behind and take care of them.

(Giving Geeks): FEAR HAS ITS USE

A written description of how your project answers the challenge: First off I had to get over my fear of letting things go. Second my donation of clothes and books to the local thrift store helps local families overcome several fears. They can buy the items for as low as a nickel which will help with their fear of not having enough money to buy clothes for their family. Second the proceeds from the thrift store buy food for the food bank which is then given away reliving their fear of starving.

Team spirit: In the first book in Jesse Peterson’s Living with the dead series “Married with Zombies,’ Sara and David are forced to loot a sporting good store when they are left with no supplies. One of the main things they were after was clothes. In the second book “Flip this Zombie,” Sara tells of how they looted a book store to gain information that they otherwise could not have gotten in their zombie apocalyptic world.

Well, I know I have been MIA for quite some time...

My old laptop fizzled out and I used only my iPad for a few months while I worked only on my other blog. I then made enough money to buy me a brand new all-in-one HP which I love. I started going back to school to finish my degree. I now have over 45 credit hours towards my Bachelors in Graphic Design. I am so happy to be back doing what I love.

Right before my laptop died I started a Raverly account. My name is MegaMsVeee. I am now in the process of updateing all of my current yarn stash and all of my WIP. I will soon add some of my recently completed projects too.

I also added my Super Bulky Tam pattern to Raverly and plan to have an updated PDF version soon. I will be hooking a few more for winter.

My little boy...

Ok, so most of you know I have 3 kiddos. My middle son will soon be turning 5. He has been having trouble for some time now with his fine motor skills. He has trouble coloring and holding a pencil correctly. He does ok with scissors, but he is left handed.

Anyway, I was shopping with all of the kids (they are all out of school thanks to Hurricane Isaac) when my middle child tells me he wants me to buy him a crochet book, yarn and a hook so that I can teach him to crochet.

This took me by surprise I have to say! He is the last one I expected to hear this from. I was young when I began to learn, but I was my grandma’s littlest girl. I was always by her side.

He picked out a dishcloth book and some camo yarn. I am wondering if the small G hook will be too difficult for him. We will give it a try. If it doesn't work well, I will buy some more Super Bulky Yarn for him to use with the N hook.

He is pretty excited. I bought some rainbow yarn for me to try some of these patterns too. I have always wanted an excuse to use rainbow yarn!

I'll post pictures of the finished products after we are done.

T-Shirt Blanket Day 10: The end of another ball

Hey there! Seven more t-shirts down! WOW! I can't believe 53 t-shirts are in my blanket already! I am working on rounding up t-shirts for my next ball. I am going to ask my hubby for some of his old t-shirts. I never go through his clothes. If he wants to send something to the trash or thrift store, he has to make that decision. So, I am going to ask him to go through and see if there are any he can donate to my blanket project.

I am also going to check Freecycle and Craigslist for free t-shirts. I may also go back to the thrift stores and buy some more interesting t-shirts.

Currently I have rows of HDC, 53 t-shirts in my blanket and 0 t-shirts left on my ball.

Hi there! More of the blanket down! How many days will it take? How many t-shirts will it take to make a queen size blanket? I feel like i was slacking today. I only did 2 more rows. I think it has something to do with school starting.

T-Shirt Blanket Day 8: Getting the hang of this

It feels so good to be back working on this project! I have never even attempted a crochet project of this size before. I am really enjoying this project. It is very relaxing. I never realized how nice it was to just sit down while watching TV or watching my husband play Call of Duty and crochet. At this point, I am pretty much just running on autopilot.

Today I added 15 tshirts to my project all while watching The Lorax with the family.

Currently I have 14 full rows of HDC, 39 t-shirts in my blanket and 14 t-shirts left on my ball.

T-Shirt Blanket Day 7: A trip to the thrift store

The good news is my kids just got a ton of new clothes, so that meant I could go trough their t-shirts again! I took all of the tight and/or stained t-shirts to add to my pile. I managed to get 19 t-shirts for my blanket! But I knew this was not enough.

So, I set out on a mission to find some more t-shirts. My kids had gone camping, so I was finally able to go to the thrift store alone! I looked through the entire store for every size. I bought 10 tshirts total. The sizes varied from baby to Men's XL. It was easy to find new colors and interesting patterns.

It took 3 hours to cut, sew and wind this ball. It was well worth it! Now I have 29 t-shirts on my ball!

All I have to do know it connect it to my working project!

Super Bulky Tam Tutorial

Today, instead of working on my t-shirt blanket, I am starting a new project. (In case you missed my last post, I ran out of t-shirts and am waiting for more.)

I have been looking for the perfect dread tam for a few months now. So I decided this was a great time to make my ideal tam. The cold weather is fast approaching, so I will be using super bulky Lion's brand yarn on this project.

In case you need a refresher on Double Crochet (DC) you can find it at About Crochet. Also a refresher for a decrease (Single Crochet 2 together or Sc2tog) can be found at About crochet.

I love the way it turned out! Here is the pattern...

Ch 4 (counts as first DC). DC in 4th ch from hook. DC 10 more times in same stitch (12 dc total.)

Ch 3 (counts as first DC). DC in same st. *2 DC in next st. Repeat from * around.

Ch 3 (counts as first DC). DC in same st. *1 DC in next st, 2 DC in next st. Repeat from * around.

Ch 3 (counts as first DC). DC in same st. *1 DC in next 2 st, 2 DC in next st. Repeat from * around.

Ch 3 (counts as first DC). DC in same st. *1 DC in next 3 st, 2 DC in next st. Repeat from * around.

Ch 3 (counts as first DC.) DC in every dc around. Repeat this row 6 more times.

Ch 2 (counts as first sc). Sc2tog around.

Ch 3 (counts as first HDC). HDC in every st. Repeat this row 2 more times.

This will give you a final tam exactly like the one I made. Here are some shots of my tam:

T-Shirt Blanket Day 6: The end of ball 2

Today I picked up my blanket project and I hooked away until I ran out of yarn on my ball. It is getting much bigger now, so I came up with a new way to work this giant blanket. I am now going to work this like a scroll. I roll the end as I go and unroll the other end at the same time. So far this method is working well. I may change this as it gets bigger.

For now I am done. I have 8 3/4 HDC rows done using a total of 24 t-shirts! If you have any ideas of where I can find more t-shirts to cut up and use on this project, please comment below. Thanks you!
