Shoemaker out at least until bowl game

Boise State sophomore slot receiver Tyler Shoemaker will be out at least until the Broncos’ bowl game because of hernia surgery, the school announced Friday. Shoemaker didn’t make the trip to Logan.

True freshman Kirby Moore replaces Shoemaker as the starting slot receiver, which is the No. 3 wide receiver.

Shoemaker was injured in last week’s game against Idaho. He is tied for third on the team with 21 catches for 345 yards and two touchdowns.

Moore has eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.

One of the two longest home winning streaks in the nation likely will need to end to prevent Boise State from claiming a Bowl Championship Series berth this year.

Oklahoma has the nation’s longest home streak at 28 games. The Broncos need the Sooners to beat Oklahoma State on Nov. 28 in Norman to eliminate the team that is perceived as the last legitimate threat to the Broncos for the last at-large BCS spot.

Boise State junior tailback Jeremy Avery quietly is approaching the 1,000-yard milestone.

Avery has rushed for 892 yards. At his current pace, he will finish the year with 1,249 yards — the sixth-highest total in school history.

And he’s done it while playing on a team that has had three other tailbacks rush for 100 yards in a game.

“It means a lot,” Avery said. “That’s what any running back wants to do — gain 1,000 yards. I don’t too much dwell about it, though.”

Boise State freshman tailback Matt Kaiserman and senior tight end/fullback Richie Brockel will miss the rest of the season, coach Chris Petersen said Monday.

Kaiserman has a broken leg and will have surgery, Petersen said.

Brockel has a foot injury, the extent of which doctors have not determined, Petersen said. He wasn't sure whether it would impact Brockel's preparation for the NFL Draft. Brockel is one of the nation's top fullbacks.

The Boise State football team remained No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, The Associated Press Top 25 and the Harris poll Sunday but lost more ground to No. 4 TCU in all three.

The Broncos also stayed at No. 6 in the Bowl Championship Series standings. TCU is No. 4.

The Broncos have 1,183 points in the USA Today poll — down 17 from last week. TCU has 1,277 points — up 15 from last week.

Enderle warms up for Vandals, but not with first or second team

Idaho quarterback Nathan Enderle is in uniform and he participated in pregame drills with the quarterbacks. He threw right-handed, unlike last week, when he threw left-handed and didn't play against Fresno State.

Still, backup quarterback Brian Reader is expected to start. Reader took the snaps with the first team during warmups. Third-stringer Logan Bushnell took the snaps with the second team.

Starting strong safety Jeromy Jones isn't expected to play.

Since I’m now in the minority voting Boise State ahead of TCU in The Associated Press Top 25, I decided to dig into the question of why the Horned Frogs passed the Broncos — and whether I should vote the same way.

TCU is No. 4 in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Boise State, which has been as high as No. 4, is No. 6.

I’ve heard several reasons for placing the Horned Frogs ahead of the Broncos. Here’s what I found as I looked into each:

The Boise State athletic department has created a non-profit corporation — Boise State Broncos Inc. — and will sell shares for $100, athletic director Gene Bleymaier announced Wednesday.

Shareholders receive a certificate and can vote on board members at an annual meeting. They do not receive any dividends and the stock doesn't appreciate. The purchase is tax-deductible.

The money will be used to help Boise State expand facilities, Bleymaier said. The idea came from the Green Bay Packers.
