What I remember most about the original State Court Cafe isn't the food. It's the sound. In its heyday, that shoebox of a State Street diner was filled with the clatter of plates and silverware, shouts of "Order up!" and the constant hum of a clientele packed belly to counter and shoulder to shoulder. The place was funky, authentic and fun.

The new Disney "A Christmas Carol" is another epic achievement in motion-capture animation, advancing the art form closer to photo-realism than "The Polar Express" or "Beowulf." Dazzling, ornate visuals take us to the snowy London of 1837, swooping over its digital rooftops and down its digital chimneys. Faces take on musculature, expression and detail.

There's a simple disclaimer at the beginning of "Michael Jackson's This Is It." It reads, "For the fans." It shouldn't be ignored. Those that stuck with the troubled pop icon after his universe shifted from the charts to the tabloids probably will find equal measures of inspiration and heartbreak in the documentary. For everyone else, it's a strange offering.

As the curtain rises on Joel and Ethan Coen's suburban comedy "A Serious Man," you may wonder if you're in the right theater. In the opening sequence, the Polish peasant Velvel and his wife huddle in their hovel while a fist pounds at their door. Has the almighty Hashem blessed them with a visitor?
Grammy-winning band Ozomatli has been busy working on a new album to be released next year, but not too busy to perform for an audience that included President Obama and the first lady six weeks ago. After that little warm-up, the group is back out on the road for the masses again, which is fitting, considering they like to call their tunes "the people's music." Ozomatli is one of the most fun-loving, crowd-pleasing live acts on the planet. Their infectious combination of Latin rock, funk and hip-hop is irresistible - and, at times, amazing.

Although they now live in California, four-piece instrumental band Pelican originally hails from Chicago, where cold winters and bitter winds inevitably helped shaped the critically acclaimed group's post-metal sound. Pelican's bass-heavy stoner-rock is arty, dense and often droning. On stage, Pelican's sound settles into a bludgeoning tidal wave of interplay between guitarists. Just be aware: Although the groove is undeniable - and this is a pretty cool indie band to be stopping in Boise - traditional headbangers may wonder what the flap is about Pelican.

When Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli's "Turandot" was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1987, it was described as spectacle incarnate, Cecil B. DeMille meets P. T. Barnum. You can get another eye full as the Met revisits its classic productions this season as part of the Met's "Live in HD" simulcast series. It will be broadcast from 12 on-stage cameras. Puccini's last opera offers a beautiful, melodic journey to China and the story of a beautiful, and unobtainable, princess, sung by Maria Guleghina in her Met debut, and the man who will win her love, Calaf, sung by Marcello Giordani. (Both are pictured.) Conductor Andris Nelsons makes his Met debut with this production.

Boise Philharmonic conductor Robert Franz has been shaking things up since he arrived last year. One of his missions - to expand the orchestra's scope - will be realized this weekend as he conducts the orchestra's Chamber Orchestra as part of the Caldwell Fine Arts season. This is a great chance to hear and enjoy an intimate chamber experience performed by 17 of the group's core artists, including violist David Johnson, cellist Sam Smith of the Langroise Trio, French horn player Pam Howard, and double bassist Jack Koncel. The program is Beethoven's Septet, the original arrangement of Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" and Jacques Ibert's Divertissement.

Arthur A. Hart is mostly known as a historian, author and Idaho Statesman columnist. But he also is an artist. You can see a collection of collages he did while writing "Chinatown: Boise Idaho, 1870 to 1970" (Historic Idaho Inc., $24.95) at the Garden City Library this month. Hart's small abstract multi-media pieces reflect the mystique of Boise's lost cultural treasure, a Chinatown that flourished in the heart of the city. The exhibit is part of the library's Books & Brushes program. Sales of the work benefit the library.
