They are one of the earliest wildflowers to appear at low elevations from the Foothills to Hells Canyon and all the way to Clearwater Country. The bright yellow flowers are easy to spot along local trails. Another small white wildflower that is appearing now is the woodlandstar.

Roger Phillips' Fish Rap: Get your trout season started now

For some of us, there is no off-season for trout fishing. Other people - no slight intended - are fairweather anglers who don't want ice in their rod eyes and numb feet from wading in frigid rivers. They want the sun on their shoulders and a river filled with eager trout. Fair enough. It's hard to argue with that logic. After all, fishing is supposed to be a "leisure" activity. Some of us just like to turn it into a voluntary beatdown, in the words of one of my favorite fishing writers, Jason Koertge.

Mist and cold air make some cool ice sculptures. I frequently spot these along rivers and streams during winter. When swift water, rapids or anything else that kicks up a little water, it freezes on tree branches or whatever else is above the water. These natural ice sculptures constantly evolve with the weather and when it stays shady and cold, can grow quite large. In addition to being cool to look at, they are fun to photograph. You can turn your shutter speed down until the water blurs and make some really interesting abstract photos.
