I grew up riding trolleys in Pittsburgh, with two streetcar lines running between our suburb and downtown. The trolleys took us to sporting events, movies and concerts. Even after I got my driver's license, I figured out it was cheaper to take the trolley to my downtown summer jobs than to drive.

Richert: Meridian is playing hardball. The city's urban renewal agency wants the Boise (technically, Garden City) Hawks to become, technically, the Meridian Hawks. The urban renewal folks want to discuss a new stadium, and they don't want the Hawks talking with Boise City Hall.

Great job to Idaho Power for applying the notion of charging a higher rate to the consumers who use more energy (in response to "Power bills shock Idahoans" article), although this should have been implemented long ago. Now how about the idea of keeping the power generated in Idaho's waters in Idaho, and not allowing other more populous states to exploit our natural resources? Better yet, how about solar power? The sun's energy is just waiting for us to take advantage of it, so why should we continue to abuse our rivers and all the life that depends on them?

Tom Luna recently stated: "In this economic situation, I don't know how anyone can justify giving anyone a raise." According to the office of the state controller, Mr. Luna's salary went from $88,374 a year ago to $93,756 today. Gov. Butch Otter's salary went from $108,727 to $115,348.

Even though the Obama administration is jettisoning the name of No Child Left Behind, it is not abandoning the core principles embodied in the 2002 law. The administration has embraced the principles of accountability, disaggregating data and insisting that no student groups - not minorities, not those with disabilities - be left behind.

There has been a government health controlled plan for decades. (GEHA, Blue Cross or Blue Shield, etc.) As a past government worker, I switched from one insurance to another, deductibility.
