four classic television commercials. This year, internet advertising turns 18-years-old. And yet despite almost two decades of innovation online, digital ads are still being used to simply inform more than they’re being used to connect, engage and entertain. The Project Re:Brief campaign, online at projectrebrief.com, provides creative remakes of Coca Cola Hilltop campaign, the Volvo Drive It You Like You Hate It campaign, the Alka Seltzer “I Can’t Believe I Ate The Whole Thing” campaign, and Avis “We Try Harder” campaign, pushing the boundaries of creative ideas and online technology can work hand in hand.
The idea was to create a new 'artist series' of stylish designs for Vapur's Anti-Bottle that would make drinking tap water more fashionable.

The New iPad Presented by Tim Cook

This sounds like faint praise, but the biggest news for developers from the unveiling of Apple’s new iPad may be the company’s decision to lop £70 off the price of the previous model.

Selling the iPad 2 for £329 in the UK ($399 in the US) has the potential to expand the userbase for Apple’s tablet, in the same way that the still-available iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 have done for the company’s smartphone.

For developers still mulling whether to invest more in making tablet apps, the price drop could be the tipping point.

That said, be wary of any claims that the cheaper iPad 2 will suck developers away from Android. The two most interesting Android tablets for many developers – Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet – start at $199 in the US.

Anyway, what about that new iPad, and its implications for developers? The most obvious impact is for games, as shown by the two titles demonstrated at the launch: Namco’s Sky Gamblers Air Supremacy, and Epic Games’ Infinity Blade Dungeons.

Developers with the necessary resources will be licking their lips at the prospect of making use of the new iPad’s Retina display, quad-core A5X processor and rumoured 1GB of RAM for beefier, better-looking games.

Expect the phrase “console-quality” to be hurled around a lot in the coming months. The new iPad won’t be the only quad-core tablet by any means, but the key here will be its reach – the quicker it reaches a significant install base, the more developers will be able to justify the investment required to make these kinds of games.

An important point: these are only a certain portion of the iPad games market. Apple’s own chart for the top 25 all-time paid apps on iPad in the UK is stuffed with games like Angry Birds, Scrabble and Monopoly, Fruit Ninja and Cut the Rope, which have always been about accessible gameplay rather than graphical horsepower.

These kinds of games will sharpen up for the Retina display, of course, but that’s evolution rather than revolution for their developers.

The fact that Autodesk’s SketchBook Ink was the third new app demonstrated at the new iPad’s launch shows potential for art and creativity apps with the new screen and beefier processor, too. “Professional and everyday artists are going to love this device, and it’s going to inspire them to create beautiful pieces of artwork,” said Autodesk’s Chris Cheung at the launch.

Remember that debate about iPad (and, indeed, tablets in general) being just for consumption rather than creativity? We’ll see more apps coming out that will continue the process of laying that notion to rest. Look at the push made by Adobe into tablet apps in recent times, and think about what it might do now with the new iPad and comparable devices.

I was interested in the fact that all three of these apps were specifically referred to as iOS exclusives at the event, and wonder whether this is something Apple is pushing for more overtly in its dealings with developers. Then again, exclusivity may simply be what’s required to get a slot on-stage during an Apple keynote.

It’s too early to say what impact the new device will have on apps from the media industry. Will that Retina display make new iPad owners more likely to subscribe to digital magazines and newspapers, or use apps like Netflix and BBC iPlayer?

Another area – tablet-based augmented reality – should also benefit from the much-better rear camera in the new iPad. But this is very much a niche for now.

Of more practical use to most iOS developers is the news that emerged after the launch event, that Apple has increased the download-size limit on apps downloaded over a mobile network (as opposed to Wi-Fi) from 20MB to 50MB.

Even so, the big takeaways from the launch are more about the wider competitive landscape: not just how the iPad compares to its closest Android rivals, but where it sits in the context of computing as a whole.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook took a direct swipe at Android during his presentation, criticising “blown-up smartphone” apps for Twitter and Yelp on Google-powered tablets, and comparing them to the slicker versions on iPad.

It was a well-aimed blow: those tablets are easily capable of running the better versions, so why aren’t developers providing them? Note, though, that Cook didn’t show, say, the Kindle Fire version of Twitter, which is better.

The big thing for developers to chew over is what Cook describes as “the post-PC revolution” – an idea that book-ended the launch event.

“A world where the PC is no longer the centre of your digital world, but rather just a device,” said Cook. “We’re talking about a world where your new devices, the devices you use the most, need to be more portable, more personal and dramatically easier to use than any PC has ever been.”

It’s this shift – which is not just an Apple thing – that is disrupting the businesses of established software firms and providing big opportunities for new startups and developers.

With that in mind, all eyes will now be on Apple’s WWDC conference this summer, as well as corresponding events from Google, Microsoft and others, for more pointers on how this post-PC shift is guiding the evolution of their platforms.

Or, to put it another way: it’s fun to chew over the implications of the new iPad hardware for developers. But the real meat will come with iOS 6, Android 5, Windows 8 and other software in the months to come.

The Weeping House

Philippe Starck And Peugeot Create A Hybrid Bike-Scooter, For A Bike-Sharing Program

Following the wild success of custom-designed public bicycles in Paris and Copenhagen, Bordeaux will be the latest metropolis to unveil its very own city bike, by French design dynamo Philippe Starck.

A twist: It’s a bike and a scooter rolled into one.

The scooters are expected to be manufactured by Peugeot and will supplement an existing bike-sharing program in Bordeaux, which has made a point of promoting cycling. Thanks in part to efforts to limit car traffic and develop a tramway, the city has seen the number of cyclists triple in the past 15 years alone; today, more than 10% of residents commute by bike. Officials hope that a freshly designed PMV will strengthen that momentum.

Starck presented the concept, after input from the public, earlier this month. It’s only a preliminary design, so details are vague, but based on a rendering, it has big yellow wheels and standard pedals for when you want to ride it as you would any other bike. It also has a step-through frame and a platform for times when you want to zoom along, labor-free.

Starck gives the initiative some serious star power. In the design world, he is as famous for his flamboyant personality as for his flamboyant, if sometimes baffling, designs. (Of a non-functional, gold-plated lemon squeezer he created for Alessi years ago, he is rumored to have said, "It’s not meant to squeeze lemons, it is meant to start conversations.")

Bike-sharing programs have been tremendously popular in Europe and even here in North America. One drawback, though, is that they exclude residents with limited mobility (and those of us who are just mega lazy). A bike-scooter hybrid sounds like a good way to solve that problem.

In a rare Q&A with the Evening Standard‘s Mark Prigg from the firm’s headquarters, Apple’s design guru talks about Apple’s design process and of course the competition.

When asked what made design different at Apple, Ive responded:

A: We struggle with the right words to describe the design process at Apple, but it is very much about designing and prototyping and making. When you separate those, I think the final result suffers. If something is going to be better, it is new, and if it’s new you are confronting problems and challenges you don’t have references for. To solve and address those requires a remarkable focus. There’s a sense of being inquisitive and optimistic, and you don’t see those in combination very often.

On the genesis of new products:

A: What I love about the creative process, and this may sound naive, is this idea that one day there is no idea, and no solution, but then the next day there is an idea. Where you see the most dramatic shift is when you transition from an abstract idea to a slightly more material conversation. But when you make a 3D model, however crude, you bring form to a nebulous idea and everything changes — the entire process shifts. It galvanises and brings focus from a broad group of people. It’s a remarkable process.

Dramatizing the new zero-emission technology, Mercedes literally made the car invisible to the environment through a pretty impressive cloaking effect. I love it because the idea is simple, well executed and
effective (so far it’s managed to get over 8 million people talking about F-CELL hydrogen fuel cells).

It was done by covering one side of the car with LEDs that played back a live feed from a camera mounted on the other side. This meant that you had to be in the right position for full effect, but the wrap up video is impressive for those that did see it.

Pinhole Movie Project

In Ridley Scott’s new blockbuster Prometheus, a pop culture reference is made to TED Talks. Set in the year 2023,

Peter Weyland (a character played by Guy Pearce) is giving an inspiration speech to a crowd of audience to explain why it’s important to create a humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.

The film is set in “the darkest corners of the universe” which is believed to be the environment Ridley Scott created in Alien. The plot follows a “team of explorers to find the origins humankind after discovering a significant clue. Watch a sneak peak of Prometheus below before it opens in theaters in June, 2012.

Vodafone enlisted digital agency Cybercom to help them create
something different this Christmas. The experience started with “Make Someone Happy” on the Vodafone Playground Facebook page which, over the past few months asked fans to share stories about the people they knew who deserved a special treat. Vodafone then delivered those treats to the most worthy nominees, captured it on video and shared it on the Facebook wall.

This campaign then crescendoed with this series of laser garffiti. The latest laser technology was shipped in from Spain and Ireland’s most talented graffiti artists were asked to paint Christmas messages that had been left on the Vodafone Playground Facebook page wall. There were showcased on the sides of buildings across Ireland.

Steve Jobs has won a posthumous Grammy Award, reports the Mercury News. The Grammy is one of a variety given under the Trustees Award banner.

The Recording Academy announced today that Jobs would be awarded one of the
Special Merit Awards given out to those who have had an effect on the music business. It is inarguable that Jobs’ impact on the industry through his work with Apple has been massive.

This year’s honorees offer a variety of brilliance, contributions and lasting impressions on our culture,” Neil Portnow, CEO of The Recording Academy said in a statement, ”It is an honor to recognize such a diverse group of individuals whose talents and achievements have had an indelible impact on our industry.”

Jobs and Apple completely changed the music industry in the space of just a couple of years with the introduction of the iPod and the iTunes Music Store. Jobs has long had a reputation as a music lover, with a special affinity for Bob Dylan and other folk singers. The way music has been handled with regards to Apple products over the years has demonstrated this love.

The Grammy officials also announced recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award category, including Allman Brothers Band, Glen Campbell, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Jones, the Memphis Horns and Diana Ross.

A ceremony to award all of the special honorees will be held on February 11th, the day before the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

How "Just Do It" was conceived by Wieden and Kennedy for Nike

Last Clock

Developed by NewMediology (Danqing Shi), Last clock is a clock app that uses popular slit scan technique to keep you in factual time, human time and remote time. Just like any other analog clock, the app has three hands: one for seconds, minutes and hours. The hands, however, are made of a slice of live video that gets scanned to the clockface. With different refresh rate for the three hands, the three time circles reflect the rhythms of the space at different temporal resolutions. The app also allows you to stream the last clock camera feed over the internet.

Björk, Biophilia

If you don’t know about it, is an iPhone/iPad release of Björk’s latest album created in collaboration with Scott Snibbe and her longtime design collaborators M/M (Paris). For this holiday season, mobile skins can be downloaded that when engaged will automatically check users into their location. When users check in they are eligible for an increased drink size.

By integrating checking in directly into the advertising it focuses more attention to the ad campaign itself on top of making checking in faster. The advertisements automatically launch and are featured among China’s most popular social networks including SinaWeibo and Jiepang, the equivalents of Twitter and Foursquare, respectively. Weibo has approximately 3 million users and Jiepang has about 1.5 million users checking in twice a day on average.

The campaign has the two fold effect of increasing incentive to check-in as well as creating increased brand awareness. Checking in also has the effect of announcing to friends where someone is shopping thus generating interest via social networks and friends. Rewarding this action only increases the frequency of check ins. And as more people check in, the more likely it is that people will see them and follow suit.

Best Fails of 2011

The Modern Woman

Scented Holiday Card

by Hyundai!
"Rather than a scented tree for your car, here's a scented car for your tree."

Wieden + Kennedy for Honda

Following their recent Experiment that had users thinking up different creative combinations with an interactive game, creative team Kirsten Rutherford and Lisa Jelliffe have released their final offering for the Great Unknown campaign to promote the new Honda Civic.

In the form of a unique 360 degree video experience that lets viewers venture into the unknown, the interactive video, inspired by the Street View experience, explores incredible environments such as ice glaciers and high desert cliff tops. And Rutherford and Jelliffe relished the chance to shoot such an adventurous job.

“We visited an ice cave in Alaska that was newly created and discovered, as well as an underwater art museum in Cancun where the fast growing reef means the sculptures won't be visible in a few months time.”

Off the Grid is the final of three interactive experiences Wieden + Kennedy London has created for the new Honda model and follows the web film Happy Dog and HTML5 game The Experiment with each relaying part of the journey the Honda engineers undertook and how they got to the final design of the Civic.

“The Civic design team threw out what they knew and started afresh, exploring every path,” explain Rutherford and Jelliffe. “We wanted Off the Grid to reflect how rewarding a journey into the unknown can be.”

Inspired by Street View, the experience takes users to places they’d never get a chance to otherwise see, or lets them experience familiar locations in an entirely new way.

“We rigged the camera off a chopper and flew off a cliff in Arizona, as well as pushing it out on to the middle of a frozen lake on a glacier,” say the pair. “All pretty exciting stuff and without a doubt the most amazing shoot of our careers so far!”
