Venomthropes Problems!

Along with my two Ghost Arks, I also purchased two Venomthropes with the money I had from my birthday a while back. I can't even begin to tell you how much of a pain they were to build, and I now find myself with a real hatred for Finecast! Maybe I have just been unlucky, but it actually took me longer to prepare the two Venomthropes for painting than it did my two Ghost Arks! So many air bubbles, miscasts, bent sections and missing bits! I even had to make one of the small fins on one of their backs out of green stuff because one was missing. I really didn't enjoy putting these bugs together, which is a real shame, because the Venomthropes are actually nice models.

I know I could have taken them back, but at first glance they looked OK, it wasn't until I was about halfway through cleaning them up that I realised how bad they were. I am now also convinced that it wouldn't have made any difference anyway, as the replacement would probably have been just as bad, if not worse! So much for FINEcast, the name just doesn't match what you get. Somehow, I was also supplied with an extra tentacle arm, which was the only good thing I have to say about them, as I am going to use it as a lash whip for my Tyranid Prime. Anyway, here they are, all built and primed ready for painting, which should be a lot more fun...

Necron Flyer Unboxing!

What can I say, It's a Necron Flyer! I have been waiting for a flyer for one of my four armies for some time, and now I finally have one. Who cares about the rules, or if it's worth the points! It's a FLYER! I plan to magnetise it up into both a Doom Scythe and a Night Scythe as usual, but until then, here is a video of me unboxing it...

Necron Super Scarab List!

Previously, I looked at a dual Doomsday Ark list with my two recently painted interchangeable Arks. In this post, I want to look at using those two models as Ghost Arks instead, which I am sure is what they will end up being most of the time anyway. I have recently got myself another OOP Tomb Spyder, giving me six in total, so maybe it's time for me to start working on my first Scarab Farm list with my sixty three Scarab bases...

So, with thirty Scarabs filling out the Fast Attack slot and the accompanying six Tomb Spyders, what else to take? HQ wise, it has to be the Stormlord to keep those Scarabs as safe as can be with his night fight ability, and the mandatory Crono Cryptek, to keep the night fight going for long as possible. As this list is basically based around the Scarabs, then why not focus on that, and take it one step further and make them Super Scarabs? Enter Namesor for his furious charge buff! A lot of points yes, but I think it could work, as long as I have enough points to get some troops in! Two Ghost Arks with five Warriors in each will leave me enough points for a unit of nine Immortals, for the Stormlord and Crono Cryptek to join, which hopefully will just about be enough...

One more Spyder

I managed to get my sixth and final OOP Tomb Spyder from eBay the other day. I always have one Gloom Prism in each of my Spyder units, for the usual wound allocation and for a bit of psychic defence, so this puts me in a nice position to introduce some of the new models into my army. I plan on getting myself three new Gloom Prism Spyders, and putting one of each in the three sets of two old models I already have. I will then have a chance to use some of the nice new minis, but keep some sort of uniform look to the army.

Sadly the model I got from eBay wasn't very well packaged and the gun broke off, so I was left with some pinning for it. I also decided to go for a different pose and have it in a sitting position for a bit of variety. To get the head looking forward I ended up having to do a bit of green stuff work, which I think came out pretty well. To make the model have some surface areas to glue it onto the base, I put some green stuff on the base and made some indentations so that I had something to glue it to when it was dry...

Necron Doomsday List!

Now I have my magnetised Doomsday Arks all painted up, it's time to put a list together for them. I know the Doom Ark has always had a bad response in the new Codex, and with the Annihilation Barge being so good for the points, it's easy to see why. Still, I have them, so I am going to use them!

So, where to start? Well, as the Doom Ark already has a bit of a bad reputation as such, I was thinking of taking this list one step further. I am going to take a Monolith as my third Heavy Support choice, to go with my two Doomsday Arks! No need to go into the for and against of the Monolith, but lets face it, it's not a must have unit. I have only used the Monolith once before, I deep striked it in for a 12" scatter and a mishap, so I am keen to give it another try! So now I am trying units I haven't used much or at all, maybe It's about time I got my Destroyer Wraithlord on the table! Six Wraiths and a Destroyer Lord with Warscythe, Weave and Mindshakle should do the trick...

As the Destroyer Lord doesn't unlock the Royal Court, next stop is going to be an Overlord with a Barge and three Lance Crypteks with a single Solar Pulse. Now to pad out the Troops with Immortals and Warriors and we are all done...

Lucky Lukas the Trickster!

I have recently been lucky enough to win a competition that was run by PaintingXoan over on his YouTube channel. His winning prize was for me to send him a mini of my choice, and he would paint it up for me however I wanted it. I chose to send him my 13th Company Lukas the Trickster conversion, which I have previously posted about here. I spruced up his base a bit as I hadn't done anything to it yet, and sent it off to him with my painting requirements, including a dead Blood Angels helmet!

Thank you so much Xoan for running the competition and for choosing my video as the winner. I hope you have a lot of fun painting Lukas up, and I am really excited about receiving him back when he is done, which of course, I will post pictures up for all of you to see. I have been very fortunate, and discovered that one of my snooker team mates used to be into 40k. He no longer plays or has an interest in it, and has very kindly sent a few minis my way. Most of the minis are from the old Eldar range, including a Falcon, Avatar and a few old Howling Banshees. In the bag of bitz were three models of which I am not sure what they are. Does anyone else know what they are please? They were all painted when he was quite young, so I am sure he won't mind me saying, please excuse the paint job

The problem is usually my big bad doomsday arc get blown up first turn, any ways to prevent this?

OK, I have had a good look over your list and the problem you have with the Doom Ark....

So, lets start with the Ark, as you know the gun is nasty, so it will be a priority for your enemy to take out! The reason why it is going down early game is that you do not have anything else on the table that is threatening enough to take your enemies attention away from the Doomday Ark. Your Lords/Warriors are just sitting around at the back and the Annihilation Barge, although good, is not going to be a target priority over the Doomsday Ark.

There are two options, you could get another unit that will be a distraction, I would suggest Scarabs. The Scarab Farm with Spyders isn't really going to work at this points level, but trust me, even five Scarabs munching on a tank is amazing, and once your enemy sees how good they are, they will become a target priority! They may not be around for long, but they should help keep your Doomsday Ark up for a few turns! Keep the Scarabs in cover for the 3+ cover save and push them forward as a total distraction unit.

Option two is to use deployment to help the Doom Ark! Try and get those cover saves from terrain or maybe put the Anni Barge in front of it for cover! You could also try taking second turn and reserving the Doom Ark, that way it will be able to come on from reserve and shoot it's gun right away, albeit not at full strength. Sadly reserving will give you the random element of when it will come on, but it will help it survive! There is also another way of keeping it alive a bit longer with a Cryptek, which I will come to later..

Troops

OK, so you have thirty Warriors, I would be tempted to change the configuration to one unit of twenty or so depending on the points, and two units of five. Again, there is a reason for this when I come to Crypteks in a moment. The Large group will have the Overlord joined to it and move forward shooting as it goes. The two smaller groups will hold back for taking objectives etc.

Overlord:

The Overlord is a good choice, you could cut down on points if needed by dropping Phylactery, as it's a bit of a luxury at 1000pts, you could even lose Shackles, although it is nice to have.

Crypteks/Court:

Get yourself a Harbringer of destruction with an Eldritch Lance for long range shooting and a Solar Pulse to pop off night fight when needed to keep the Doomday Ark/Scarabs alive for a turn. Put him with one unit of five Warriors. I like the idea of your Veil Cryptek, he is great for last minute objective contesting/grabbing, also he can Veil out of trouble if the enemy closes in on you. I would drop the Nightmare Shroud though to save some points for Scarabs. Failing that, another Lance Cryptek would be a good option. So now we have two small units of Warriors we are in a better position for Crypteks, and the overpriced Lord is not needed as we are going to use the last two units of Warriors in a different way.

What under slug gun are you using on the Ann Barge? Depends on your enemy really, if on foot then Gauss, but if they are more mechanised then Tesla!

New Necron Wave - My Thoughts!

Just a few of my thoughts on the new wave of Necron models...

The HQ's look cool, shame they are Finecast! As the cloak of my Stormlord has broken off three times already, I can see no hope for the cloak on this dudes arm at all!

The new Spyder does look sweet, but I already have six old ones already! I still haven't decided if I should splash out for three new ones or find three old ones on eBay for the last unit, I think I will wait and see them in the flesh before I make my mind up. Not sure why they have put them on small flying bases though? I see the Tomb Blades are on small bases as well? I think I will up size all mine to match in with the rest of the army. The Tomb Blades look exactly like everyone has converted them to be, which is great all round.

Same for the Stalker really, all those ghost Ark conversions were spot on. I have to admit, I never did like the idea of the Stalker walking on the spine things, I am not a fan of the model design really, I would prefer something hovering like the rest of the army.

Again the Wraiths look nice, but the Whip Coils look like such a weak point and very vulnerable, at least they are not Finecast! I will again, wait to pass full judgement until I see them in the real. I already have six old Wraiths, so another unit of the new minis is not out of the realms of possibility.

So what do you think? Will the new Wraiths and Spyders match in with my old models? Or is it time to start stalking eBay?

I have really enjoyed my Blog and I love the way it encourages me to keep going with all my hobby projects. How to magnetise a Necron Ghost/Doomsday Ark

Here is a little tutorial on how I made my Ghost Ark/Doomsday Ark interchangeable. I know there is an easy fix, with just keeping the Ghost Ark as it is and then magnetising the Doomsday gun to the top of it, but I wanted to go all the way with turning the spines over. This then gives you the problem of the Gauss Flayers being upside down as well though. So here is what I did, with my main criteria being the spines the correct way up for both models, and keeping the Gauss Flayers the right way up as well...

First is the front section, fill in the front with green stuff (I use grey stuff here, but it's the same) and then super glue a 5x1mm magnet (you can get them off eBay) to sit flush with it. I then filled in the front spine with green stuff to match the depth of the front piece, and glued a magnet into that...

Next, build the rear section as much as you think you can without hindering your painting, here you can see I left my driver and the side struts off mine. Then, use some green stuff on the back section where the Ghost Ark spine sits, bringing it flush with a magnet on it. Next, fill in the rear spine and put a magnet in that, again to the correct depth. In these sections, I used the same 5x1mm magnets, but I used two magnets on each side for some extra strength...

Repeat the process on the top rear section where the Doomsday spine will go, and stick a magnet on the back of the cap that covers the hole when it's a Ghost Ark...

Now for the Gauss Flayers. If you don't glue the sections that the Flayers glue onto into the spines, they will freely rotate around, perfect for getting the Flayers the right way up as we want. Take that section and the Flayer, and cut them down with a 3x0.5mm magnet on each side as pictured below, again use a bit of green stuff first to help hold them into place...

Now we have a gun that will be the correct way up on both Arks...

Time to glue all the spines together, it's worth noting that it's best to glue the four stoppers to the ends first, and let them fully dry before hand. You don't want any glue sticking the moving section when you put it all together...

OK, so that's the Ghost Ark complete, without the Warriors, which is great for standing your actual minis on the model so you know what units are in which Arks, but I am also going to magnetise in my Warriors, just for the hell of it...

Pretty simple really, using a small blob of green stuff first of course, stick one magnet onto the Ark and one onto the Warriors as pictured below...

Now for the Doomsday Cannon, start with a magnet on the rear of the cannon...

For a bit of extra support, I also magnetised the top of it. I used a 3x0.5mm magnet with a 2x1mm magnet on the top of that and in the hole where it sits on the spines, this gives it some stregth and fits them nicely together...

Doomsday Ark done...

I got two of these for my Birthday, so I have one more to build before I start painting them. I hope the tutorial was useful, let me know if you have any question...

Doom of Malan'tai Conversion

As I already use the old Zoanthropes model as Zoanthropes, it was pretty obvious how I was going to go about making a Doom of Malan'tai model! I had already bought and used, a metal version of the new Zoanthropes model for DoM, so this was going to be a nice, easy conversion. First, here is a picture of my Zoanthropes...

I never really liked the tail of the new Zoanthropes so that was my starting point. I cut off his tail and pinned on an old Gargoyle tail in it's place. From then on it was just a case of adding some unused Mawloc spines, gluing a coin under the base so that it didn't topple over, and then going back over it with a spray base coat of black ready for painting...

See him painted up in a few posts time...

Here is a battle report of a game I played against my buddies Terminator Blood Angels army. I hope you enjoy the report, any comments about the game or the write up are most welcome...

MISSION

We roll off and get Seize ground with three objectives and Dawn of War deployment. I win the roll to place two of the three objectives and we end up with all three objective in a mirror formation in a central position, great, as I need the objectives together for my small army. I also won the roll off for first turn and chose to go second...

DEPLOYMENT

Blood Angels reserve the two jump troops to combat down and deep strike, they then declare to walk on the rest of the army turn one. I deploy Eldrad and a unit of Pathfinders in a bunker next to the objective on my side of the table, with the rest of the army also coming on turn one, except for reserving the second unit of Pathfinders.

TURN ONE

Both units of Terminators come on the board edge and start coming towards me, running six inches each, I thought I was playing against his Ork army for a minute! I bring on two Wraithlords and two Harlie groups to the right of Eldrad, they are there to move forward as a blob. The other Lord and Harlies went to the left and behind Eldrad as the support/counter unit for the Pathfinders. I get lucky with the Pathfinders and pass night fight with them, rolling four sixes and a five to hit, killing two storm shield termies

TURN TWO

Two five man jump units come down from reserve behind some rocks on my left flank, Librarian unit moves and runs forward, whilst the unit with the Assault Cannons shoot my left Wraithlord, failing to wound. My reserves don't come on and I move forward with the right side blob. I shoot almost everything at the Librarian unit killing two more Termies and putting a wound on the Librarian. I of course am using doom, guide and fortune as much as the Librarians hood will let me. I take a couple of shots at the troops on the left, but they get the benefits of the rocks with cover saves

TURN THREE

Blood Angels turn three and the other two units of five jump guys come in, they also try to deploy behind the rocks to the left, but even with decent of Angels, mishap both units for me to place them anywhere on the board! I think about placing them in the corner on his side, but he will only need two turns to be on the objectives! I decide to take a bit of a gamble and I put them right behind my line next to my Harlequins! I know he will take a few of them out, but if I have a few standing I should be able to take them out in my turn.

He is forced into a corner and brings the other two groups on the left out, so he can max out on wounds on the Harlies. The Librarian tries to Fear of Darkness Eldrads unit, but take a Perils and dies. Unlucky for BA, but perfect for me as I can now use my three Psychic powers freely. I lose four Harlies in both back units from shooting, which was a bit of a result after some reasonable saves on my part.

I then use the usual doom and fortune sending the left Harlies and Wraithlord out to meet the guys by the rocks, they kill them all accept the Wraithlord who stays in combat with one Marine. I shot everything I had into the two units behind me to soften them up, forcing one unit to run with three men in and wiping out the other unit in the assault. My Pathfinders also came on from reserve behind Eldrads unit

TURN FOUR

The running Marines are within six inches of my Wraithlord and continue to run. BA have no choice now, they have to get the Terminators into my Pathfinders to go for a draw! The termies run forward and I finish of the last guy that's in assault with the Wraithlord on the left. In my turn, I fortune my Harlies and doom one of his units, I then use Mindwar to take out one of the feel no pain Priests. Wraithlords shoot out the last three running troops, and the Harlies shoot and assault both units of Terminators, killing every last one of them. Game over, I tabled his army and only lost eight of my Harlequins!

CONCLUSION

Obviously, the turning point was his mishapped Marines, which probably should never have happened with only one D6 for the scatter. I can see what he was up to trying to put all four groups behind the rocks to my left flank. I think I would have been tempted to put at least one unit somewhere at the back to keep out of trouble and grab an objective at the end, but if all four units where sitting behind those rocks ready to pounce at the end of the game, who knows what would of happened?

Cities of Death Necrons!

I am playing a Cities of Death game against my sons Space Marines soon, we are just having a bit of fun as it's the first time he has played on a Cities board, and the first time against the new Necron Codex. We have set the game at 1k points and are not going to bother with any stratagems on this occasion. Here is a list I have come up with specifically for Cityfight, it's based around the C'tan Shard making all terrain dangerous and playing a few different units for him to see in action...
