During implementations, our clients often hear about UDFs and how we can use them to meet their needs. The term “UDF” is an example of how we often let jargon and acronyms substitute for the actual value delivered. Hopefully I can shed some light on what in the world UDFs are and how they can be used.
So what the heck is a UDF?
Well, first of all, UDF is an acronym for User Defined Function. That doesn’t help does it? I know, maybe that is why we always call them just…UDFs.
For a simple description, a UDF provides the ability to do more than simply query some data from a specific table or view and present it in a standard format. UDFs provide a side door to all kinds of exciting functions. Exciting to me at least.
Here are some examples of how we can use UDFs to integrate various OSIS features into reports.

Reporting has been taken to the next level in version 19.2 of Web Central. With the availability of Aspose library (http://www.aspose.com), the flexibility for reporting has evolved to allow for customized formatting, the ability to insert images, tables, etc. in a document, all by running a job.
We have recently used the Aspose library to assist with creating new documents from an existing Word document template. When a job is run, it takes in, for instance, a lease code and is able to load various information about the lease into the document at various points. This is done by inserting Merge Fields into the document, which are later replaced with actual data. This functionality is not only limited to Word documents, it also applies to Excel spreadsheets.
Alternatively, documents can be created from scratch and content can even be managed using the Messages table.
We are excited about the possibilities this has opened up for reporting in Web Central, and hope you will be too!

How measurement-minded companies attack time-wasting management flubs that frustrate workers and slow production …
Last year, Idisis implemented and upgraded over 30 IWMS systems with five of those being larger work management projects. Ken Erickson, Process Improvement Manager for Edmonton Public Schools, forwarded an article to me released from Engineering News Record (www.enr.com) that hits key points with regards to setting craftspersons up for success. One of my favorite quotes from this article is…
“Crafts workers know how to do their jobs better than anyone. I try to set them up for success rather than try to avoid failure.”
The article was written by Bruce Buckley with reporting by Johnathan Barnes.
Where The Savings May Be Found
The Construction Industry Institute’s RT 252 research team shows that prep work and time on task rarely exceeds 50% of how crafts workers spend a typical day — a big opportunity for higher productivity.

Scott Cornelison, with Idisis – Business Development, spoke at the Charlotte IFMA Meeting on September 8th, 2011 sharing trade insights about Sustainability.
Sustainability covers a diversity of topics that include energy management, water conservation, emissions, and hazardous waste. Many facility managers struggle with what a “Sustainability Program” is and how to implement one. With an array of involved subjects, it is important to start with a single activity and from that point, tailor a program to suit your organization.
As sustainability is the focus of many organizations working to improve their triple bottom line-Profits, People, the Planet- goals, efforts, and developments have been focused on Profits and People. Now, the Planet is taking center stage. Organizations are realizing that sustainability programs do not only benefit a positive environmental stewardship, but increase profits as well.
Along with a positive influence on the environment, demonstrating a return on investment (ROI) will get projects approved and will build momentum. An application of sustainability that quickly demonstrates a ROI is an efficient Energy Program-information for analysis aggregated with streamlined management tools. Using a guide that couples and compares the analysis of current industry examples and government information, an Energy Program is created and sustainability principles can be applied in your organization.

I am going to start a series about little things in OSIS that stand out to me. Sometimes it’s the little stuff, the simple things that make all the difference and I want to highlight some of my favorites. We’re going to start with printing floor plans.
For those of us with CAD backgrounds, the challenge of accessing and printing floor plans have long been difficult to appreciate. “It works just like it does in AutoCAD” is a common refrain. But most people don’t have that background. We’ve taken pains to simplify this process in OSIS 3.0. Some of the highlights appear below.

Check it Out.
Existing and prospective clients often ask “what is your direction as a company?”. Often times in our industry this is kept close to the chest and not communicated with certainty. Idisis has learned a lot from companies such as 37Signals and Zendesk, whose solutions we utilize to provide in depth collaboration during the project implementation and support process. Those companies are part of a new era of companies who communicate constantly and ensure their clients are engaged as part of their overall direction. We like this!
At Idisis, we love to share this information. Please let us know what you think and what you would like to see from us.

June 20, Boston Massachusetts – The State of Wisconsin’s Division of State Facilities has awarded ARCHIBUS, and its Business Partner Idisis LLC, a multi-year contract for implementation of a state-wide space and real property/lease management system using the latest Web-based version of ARCHIBUS, the #1 real estate, infrastructure and facilities management solution in the world.
The award also includes data migration services, including conversion of 5 million square feet of CAD data into ARCHIBUS, as well as a three-year training and support component. Now being implemented after an accelerated ten-month campaign, the ARCHIBUS solution replaces a fragmented system of spreadsheets, an aging Access database, and reliance on outside consultants to manage the state’s CAD drawing inventory.

In an effort to provide our users with more of a one-stop shop, we have introduced integrations with ARCHIBUS Web Central embedded into OSIS or OSIS embedded into ARCHIBUS Web Central. By fusing the two together, we avoid having users flip back and forth between the two systems.
Common applications:
- ARCHIBUS Web Central forms embedded into OSIS
- OSIS Reports accessed via ARCHIBUS Web Central
- OSIS Floorplans accessed via ARCHIBUS Web Central
- Call ARCHIBUS Web Central Workflow Rules from OSIS

ARCHIBUS Web Central Form in OSIS
Use ARCHIBUS Web Central’s Background data forms and be able to quickly see your changes in OSIS.

ARCHIBUS Web Central Move Calendar in OSIS
Embed ARCHIBUS Web Central’s Move Calendar in OSIS, accessible from the Form Navigation.

OSIS Report in ARCHIBUS Web Central Work Management
OSIS Reports appear right in your ARCHIBUS Web Central navigation.

OSIS Floorplan in ARCHIBUS Web Central
Apply spatial components for more dynamic non-flash based drawing options utilizing OSIS Floor Plates and Autodesk Infrastructure Map Server (AIMS).
- Call floor plans directly from ARCHIBUS Web Central
- Highlight a specific room related to ARCHIBUS’ Work Management, Condition Assessment or Move Management
If you would like more information on how your two systems can be integrated, contact us today!
