“Duets” S1 – Series Premiere (Live Blogging)

Welcome to Duets, the latest competition show to hit the broadcast airwaves, this time on ABC. It stars Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Nettles, and John Legend.

Little is known about how Duets will work outside of what little has been revealed in their commercials: each celebrity mentioned above will be looking for two people to sing with, hence the name of the show, Duets. What we don’t know is how they will go about looking for these people, how they will determine who they will end up singing with, whether America will be voting, etc.

According to the show’s Wikipedia page:

Clarkson, Thicke, Legend, and Nettles will travel across America to find two singers each who will serve as their duet partners for the show. Each week, the mentor and one of their two duet partners will perform live in front of a studio audience.

At the end of the competition, the winning singer will win a recording contract with Hollywood Records.

“So You Think You Can Dance” S9 – Auditions, part 1 (Live Blogging)

FOX’s summer dance competition, So You Think You Can Dance returns for its ninth season tonight as judges Nigel Lythoe, Mary Murphy, and host Cat Deely head to both Dallas and New York to find the best dancer the country has to offer.

There are some changes this year to the show. The first big change is that the separate results show has been cancelled. According to the show’s Wikipedia page, in a recent interview “Lythgoe hinted at a format where each week’s episode is ended with the revelation of the bottom three couples (based on the votes from the previous week) but after all dancers had performed the new week’s routines, given the judges an additional routine to take into account when deciding which dancers (from amongst the bottom 3 couples) to save and which to send home for that week.”

The other big change of the season is the one that Lythgoe announced in a conference call last Friday: There will be both a male and a female winner this year.

I’m so nervous! Why do I let a silly TV show make me nervous? I’m sad! Sad that the season is ending tonight! In all honesty, I will be happy no matter the winner. Both Jessica and Phil are likable and frankly, my favorite doesn’t have to win for me to watch the show or be happy. Anyway, ON WITH THE SHOW!

“Their journeys may have started the same way, but their stories will end differently. Last night the competition was tighter than it’s ever been. But in the end, there can only be one.” CUE THE OPENING THEME!

Group song! All in white! It’s the Top 12 (minus the top2) singing Runaway Baby. Erika is back to blonde and looks pretty. They all look great! Joshua is growling a whole bunch and there is choreography and pointing and clapping and bouncing! Josh tries some fancy splits and almost busts his butt. Oops! Random break dancers in all black. Now they are swing dancing. I can’t see their faces. Perhaps they are former SYTYCDers. The girls on the horns are bopping it up. Fun! This was all very fast and furious! Confetti streamer bombs! Oh, was that Sue Sylvester in the audience?

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome your judges! All I know is, JLo had better not bend over in that dress, y’all. There’s Ryan! He’s all formal in a tux, tonight. “Who do you love?” The crowd disappoints and doesn’t scream very loudly at all. A staggering 132 million votes came in last night. I know this because the big screens in the theater told me that. In super high tech graphics, too.

Let’s bring ‘em out! Your Top 2! Phil Phillips and Jessica Sanchez! Down the stairs they come lookin’ all spiffy in white. OH LAWD with the white shirt and the chest hair! Someone get me a fan. Jessica looks pretty and her hair is did. Those hair stylists haven’t been doing her justice at all this season.

Ryan asks if they got any sleep. Jessica said she got a little. Phil said he got about 10 or 11 hours of sleep. I love that dude. They are both excited. Yay for excitement!

Phil is up to perform first with John Fogerty! They’re doing “Have You Ever Seen The Rain.” Phil is all smiles and I absolutely love it. He just looks happy and that makes me happy. Unfortch, he changed out of the white shirt, but he looks great, anyway. Fogerty, dude. He’s holding up well. They sounded great! Phil’s licking his lips and such. I read that his medication causes severe dry mouth. Phil says what an honor it is to be there with Fogerty and they are doing another song! “Bad Moon Rising!” Phil is as happy as I’ve seen him. This is good stuff. Also? Phil sounds very Dave Matthews-y and I love it. Phil acknowledges Fogerty. Awesome, dudes. Just awesome.

Goofy montage of the judges silliness. Fun stuff. I always like this stuff. My all-time favorite from a few years ago was the “Other door” one. People lift Ryan over their heads, Steven curses, Randy gets the giggles. The usual.

BTW, Randy is wearing another YO! pin.

Joshua’s down the stairs singing an Elton tune and I think JLo’s gonna pee herself. Oh, the song is “Take Me To The Pilot.” Oh yippee. It’s Josh’s greatest inspiration. Really? It’s Fantasia. She has a LOOOONG weave, yo. The scream and screech a lot. There’s a choir. Fantasia is poured into a sparkly body suit BUT OMG THERE ARE HUGE HOLES IN THE LEGS! Help me, Jesus. I can’t even. This is god-awful. I like Joshua, but just no.

Iovine is standing at the judges’ table with Ryan. Clips of Iovine misspeaking JLo’s name. Over and over and over. It’s actually funny. He even says Joshica, too. Jimmy kisses JLo’s hand and Ryan calls them Jimifer. Ha.

The ladies of the Top 12 are up next singing “Ain’t Nobody.” Erika! She sounds great. I wish she would have made it much further than she did. Elise kills it, too. Shannon sounds bad, Skylar twangs it up (Oh, and they’ve changed songs now. It doesn’t really matter.) Hollie sounds great as does Jessica and then Erika introduces Chaka chaka chaka Khan. Chaka Khan. Chaka chaka Khan. She’s in a freakin’ body suit, too. What is up with body suits? Chaka be smaller than I’ve seen her in years! You go on with your bad self, Chaka! Good Lord with the scream fest tonight! Can I have Phil back out on stage now? *sigh*

It’s the annual Ford commercial compiled of clips from all the vids this season.

The kids talk mentors. Phil’s mentor is his brother-in-law, Ben, who helped him in his music and improving his guitar playing. Jessica’s is a family friend, Robert. They got to present each with tickets to the finale while they were home. Jess and Phil also present them with new Fords, live, which is awesome. And of course Phil and Jess get their very own Fords. Hugs and cuteness from them all.

Bathroom break..er…Rhianna. I don’t care what she’s singing. Blah.

Skylar sings, “Turn On The Radio.” Why? Why do they dress her like that? WHY do they accentuate her hips? She looks 3 feet tall because of it. Oh, and Reba’s there, too. Skylar twangs it up. I suppose Reba does, too, but I just don’t notice hers so much. Skylar had fun, for sure!

Ryan’s at the judge table in JLo’s spot, so this can only mean one thing. It’s almost time for JLo to perform yet again. But first! A look inside Steven’s dressing room. Playboy bunnies, a sloth (no, really. A sloth.), pictures of celebs, a ceramic monkey, his sister kissing a guy, his organ, a skunk (yes, a skunk) and a real monkey. Goofy, but fun.

Not JLo, but Jessica sings next. I Will Always Love You is the song. Big notes and stuff. Good job, Jessica.

Top 12 guys! Yay! Sounds like a Neil Diamond medley to me! Sweet Caroline…bah bah bah… OK, it’s not that song, but I wish it were. Deandre sure is pretty. (That is a compliment.) Who dat? Oh, yeah. Jeremy. Poor kid is quite forgettable, but he sings fine. Where my Phil Phil? Guys, I like Colton, but he’s not sounding good tonight. Also, no one else is, either. But, here is the REAL Neil Diamond! Yay! Sweet Caroline!! Yes! I do love me some Neil Diamond. He’s pretty cool for an old guy.

As we wait for commercials to end, I must say, so far, the best thing about the show was Phil Phil and Phogerty.

Adam replaced Carrie at the top of the charts this week. So says Ryan.

A montage of Randy saying, “You could sing the phone book.” Then, the Top 12 (minus the Top 2) actually sing the phone book in choir robes. Now, that was funny! They proved it! Scotty McCreery and Ryan present Randy with a phonebook. Ha.

JLo sings two songs. Why? I’ve had enough of her performing this season. I like her, but enough. She’s got on some sparkly Hammer pants and shizz. Girl can dance, though. And lip sync. Did she just say, “Orangutan?” I want this to end.

Taylor is in the audience! He’s gorgeous! For serious. I wouldn’t kick him out of bed, you know. Ace Young and Diana Degarmo are there, too. Ace looks like Interview With A Vampire. Ryan calls them on stage and Ace proposes! But only after Ryan says, “Dim the lights!” It’s all kinda creepy. Ace is like, high or something. They cry. He says “I love you to death” and that ruins it for me. I hate that phrase. It’s not romantic. Diana is speechless. That. Was. Weird.

Hollie is next to sing, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” And here comes Jordin Sparks! She looks gorgeous! She’s come a long way, baby. Hollie sounds great and then she’s flat and here comes the choir. Hugs. They’re cute.

Top 12 guys (Minus Phil) are out to sing some Bee Gees in honor of Robin Gibb who died recently. This is bad, you guys. Did they even practice? Not trying to be mean here, but producers, seriously?? They are not harmonizing at all. Wow.

Jessica and Jennifer Holliday sing the song I despise the most in this world after “I Will Always Love You.” Can you guess?? “And I’m Telling You.” I can’t stop staring at Jennifer’s odd way that she works her mouth. Jessica is so shrill to me, tonight. That was painful, y’all. JLo will pee herself and then cry and then jump around and then fall down and stuff. That was screeching on top of yelling on top of I AM MAD on top of screaming on top of seizures.

Aerosmith. Every time I see these sort of old guys on stage, I try to picture my dad (who is around their age) doing the same kind of thing. Then I laugh hysterically. I’m OK with this. I’m just not an OMGYESAEROSMITH fan. It’s better than that last thing.

I’m so nervous, y’all! Jessica and Phil are out to sing a duet! “Up Where We Belong.” It’s so good. It’s no Phil/Elise “Somebody I Used To Know.” But, still, it’s nice and sweet. They hug. Phil looks NERVE to the OUS.

Phil and Jess have their arms around each other. The bean counter guy delivers the official results. Phil says it’s been an honor to be there and gives props to the band and the fans. (Chest hair!) Jessica gives props to the crew and the fans.

DIM THE LIGHTS!

The winner is…PHIL PHILLIPS!!!!

He nearly falls over. Hee Jun runs to him first and kisses him on the forehead. The whole gang congratulates him. Phil’s family is awesomely adorable. Phil sounds fabulous and then breaks down in tears and can’t sing. He gets confetti in his mouth. He finally gives up and takes his guitar off and goes to his family. (I am full on bawling right now.) The judges each embrace him and whisper sweet nothings…or something…to him. I can not imagine the pride his family feels right now.

That? That was the most awesome ending to an Idol finale ever. EVER. I could not have asked for a better moment.

I hope the powers that be take advantage of what they have in Phil and use him to his full potential. I hope they don’t try to make him do some poppy drivel. I hope they let him do what he does best, and that is just be Phil. He is a wonderful musical artist. I have no interest in hearing the hate. I am all about butterflies and rainbows and kitties! And now, I’m ready for Phil’s first CD! Bring it!

Congratulations, Phil! Congratulations, Jessica! You both made your fans proud! Here’s to a fabulous season!
