Aldon Smith vs Browns -

As a 49ers fan, I must admit I was a little disappointed when the 49ers drafted Aldon Smith as a top ten selection. While Vic Fangio and Jim Harbaugh understand the players, they want to bring in for their 3-4 defensive scheme, it was likely that Smith wasn’t going to make a sudden impact on the field as he would be converting to play linebacker from begin a defensive end, and doing so with no OTA’s in the summer.

Well throw those early expectations into the trash can as Smith looked good in his preseason work and already has 5.5 sacks through six games.

With the 49ers looking like a possible twelve win team this year, their defense will be in position for sack opportunities weekly, and as a recent article on Yahoo points out, Smith is on pace to tie Javon Kearse’s rookie sack total from the 1999 season.

What’s scarey about Smith is he’s doing all this while continuing to be a work in progress, and is snap count continues to grow as he matures. Look to Smith as a great start this week against the Browns, and for big play leagues, he’s worth holding from this point forward.

Karlos Dansby –

A one-time LB-1 type linebacker for IDP leagues, Karlos Dansby has struggled with this new team overall, but has picked it up of late. The Dolphins defense is going to be on the field early and often most weeks, so Dansby will have extra opportunities to rack up tackles. Don’t look to Dansby as a big-play type linebacker, but in tackle heavy leagues, he could be a consistent LB-2 through the second half.

Derrick Johnson –

The veteran IDP stud from a year ago struggled early in the season but came along before the bye week. As I talked about earlier in the year, it seems that Johnson plays well for IDP purposes when the Chiefs are playing well, and consider this team back in the hunt for now as they’ve won their last three games.

LB – Daryl Washington vs Giants –

Off to a slow start because of a neck injury, Daryl Washington got back into the lineup last week, and I expect him to play at full speed against the Giants. Washington is a worthy weekly starter when healthy as he’s the top inside linebacker to play in Arizona, and their scheme has always translated into respectable options at this position for IDP leagues.

Will Smith vs Texans -

Back after serving a two-game suspension for his part in the Star caps situation, Will Smith is ready to make an impact for the Saints. It seems like Smith has a great year, every other season and that means he’s in-line for a strong year in 2011. Smith should be viewed no less than a DL-3 in his first game back.

Greg Hardy vs Jaguars -

Look for Greg Hardy to bounce back against the Jaguars, especially if Cam Newton can get the Panthers out to a big lead early on. Hardy and Charles Johnson should have solid days, as the Jaguars quarterback situation is a mess right now, so consider Hardy good for at least one sack this week.

Ladarius Webb @ Rams -

A solid preseason gave way to an opportunity to play when rookie Jimmy Smith it the turf with a high ankle sprain week one against the Steelers. Webb has been terrific in his first two games, as he’ has 21 tackles thus far. Look for Webb to keep it rolling as long as he’s in the starting lineup and that should continue this week against the Rams.

D’Qwell Jackson vs Dolphins -

Those that listened to me in the summer, hopefully were wise enough to take a shot on D’Qwell Jackson in the later rounds of their draft. Going as late as an LB-4, Jackson was one of the best IDP linebackers before injuries cost him most of the last two years.

While health problems hurt Jackson’s stock, it was the early rumors of him moving over to a weak-side linebacker and the team switching to a 4-3 scheme that had people turning away. It didn’t take the coaches long to figure out that Jackson was prime for the middle, and his play has been stellar for IDP leagues. Jackson should be viewed as a legit LB-1 as long as he’s on the field this year

Trent Cole vs Giants

Linemen come and linemen go but one of the more consistent top producers in IDP fantasy football has been Trent Cole of the Eagles. I had to laugh when Cris Collinsworth kept questioning on TV, asking how long would the Falcons let one guy beat them, and that player was Cole.

In reality, with the Eagles adding linemen like Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin, it’s hard to focus on one great player like Cole and chip him with a running back because you have a few guys that can hurt you. Some weeks the offense will give more attention to Cole, but either way, he seems to get the job done, and will finish as a DL-1 performer by years end, once again.

Navarro Bowman –

Takeo Spikes was an IDP option last year playing next to Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman is likely to outperform Spikes numbers this year. Bowman has had two solid performances and threatens to hurt Willis as the king of IDP linebackers, by taking away valuable tackles.

Bowman is a physical beast, and it doesn’t hurt that he comes from Penn State, a college known for producing great linebackers. Look to Bowman as an LB-3 going forward and is worthy of starting weekly.

Only one game into the season and we potentially have a star fantasy player done for the year as Peyton Manning had a third surgery on his neck in the past 18 months. Manning is likely out at least two to three months and fantasy owners who drafted Manning, and his partners in crime are probably feeling a little uneasy about their odds of success already.

Fear not, as there are opportunities to add solid players off the waiver wire, each week and hopefully if you drafted Manning you protected yourself by draft someone like Ben Roethlisberger, Matthew Stafford or Matt Ryan as a backup.

LaRon Landry Continues To Battle Health Issues

9/6 update – Coach Mike Shanahan said he likely won’t decide on if LaRon Landry (Achilles’, hamstring) will play until some time before kickoff on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: For those of you that drafted Landry in IDP leagues, you should have known this was likely going to be the story throughout the season. Landry’s health will be up in the air from week to week, but when he’s on the field, this guy can perform as a DB-1 for your team. This is exactly why we backed off our initial rankings of making Landry the top defensive back in the early portion of August and viewed him more as a DB-2 as he likely will miss games.

Look to backup Reed Doughty as a must have backup to Landry as he should make for a respectable play when the Redskins star safety misses time.

Start’em

Chris Clemons @ 49ers - The 49ers offensive line is atrocious and Chris Clemons should be good for a sack in this game as the 49ers will likely keep the game close, but use their passing game often. Clemons had a breakout year for the Seattle in 2010, and while he may never do a great job in his tackling, he will be on the field as the one threat off the edge in this defense.

Ray Edwards @ Bears - Throughout the Falcons camp, defensive end Ray Edwards was battling a knee injury but came back in the teams final preseason game. I tracked down Falcons’ beat-writer D. Orlando Ledbetter on twitter and asked him if he thought Edwards would play a full compliment of snaps this week.

Ledbetter replied that Edwards should be good to go, and that is great news for his IDP fantasy owners (he’s registered a sack in three of the last four games he’s played against them) as he has a tasty match up against the Bears this week. Look for Edwards to have opportunities against the Bears shaky front line.

Linebackers

Von Miller - Word is getting around that the Broncos top selection in the spring is looking like a force in the pas rush. If Miller is ready to make an impact for IDP fantasy owners, he should have a big game against the Raiders on this week.

Oakland is retooling their offensive line, and Jason Campbell is one of the better quarterbacks to face if you’re hoping to pick up sacks. This should be a breakout performance for Miller as he will play on Monday Night Football.

Daryl Washington – The Cardinals seem happy with the progress that second year inside linebacker Daryl Washington has made in camp, and he’s going to be a full-time starter this year. Washington is worthy of a LB-3, but you can keep him on your bench until he proves he’s ready to start.

t’s all about the Giants pass rush this week as they head out to Washington to take on the Redskins. The Giants own this team, and second year defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is a must start and a likely DL-1 producer this week in any scoring format.

JPP has ridiculous ability and with the starting job in hand, this youngster will build off his impressive preseason with a strong week one. Veterans Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka figure to be in the mix as well and all three should be good for a sack this week.

2011 IDP Fantasy Football - Patrick Willis vs. Jerod Mayo

San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Patrick Willis has 595 combined tackles in his four year NFL career. He’s had at least four sacks in three of those years and will likely remain a perennial solid choice as the top IDP selected for at least a few more years. New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo had 175 combined tackles last season, that’s a NFL record. Who had the previous single-season record for tackles? Willis, of course.

Now when someone asks Willis or Mayo? Technically, there is no wrong answer. Tackles are such a fickle statistic that barring some injury, change of position or overwhelming change in defensive scheme, both players are set to have another great year. Click Here For More >>>

The information age is in full swing and the ability to track down news is easier than ever before as twitter has helped fantasy football owners understand what is going on from the ground level at every camp around the league. Year round, NFL beat writers are working hard to report valuable analysis to provide fans with a birds eye view of what’s going on with their favorite players.

Understanding the basic concepts for success in fantasy football doesn’t take long, but as we saw with the end of the lockout, news can change at a rapid pace, and even astute fantasy owners can miss on valuable info that can change the way they view a players outlook.

The FF Brainwave Report will give you some general twitters tracked down from around the web, but my mission with this report is to actually talk back and forth with beat writers from around the league, to give you information that may not be around on at the current time.

My goal is to update this report daily, and I will likely turn each days work into a post, and a link to daily work can be found at the bottom of the brainwaves home page. As you will notice, I will break this report into two sections the first begin twitter interaction, and the second is other news on twitter.

The twitter interaction section is when I actually have a back and forth talk on twitter with one of the beat writers from a team around the league, and the other news on twitter section is when I find a notable tweet that a beat writer has posted. I will likely give a quick commentary in the news section, as I will likely focus more of my time on the exclusive back and forth reports.

I also wanted to take some time to give credit to those who inspired me to start this report, and they are Cecil Lammey, Sigmund Bloom and Matt Waldman. I stumbled across their podcast this summer, and I’ve found their work to be most inspiring, and I recommend you listen to them at the link provided below. 2011 NFL Fantasy Football Cheat Sheets, Draft Strategy Tips

Daft day is back again, and it’s time to get ready by landing a cheat sheet or two to help you keep track of the notable players on the most important time of year. A strong draft can easily make the difference between winning and losing a league. While you still need to keep your team updated throughout the season with waiver wire additions and key start or bench decisions, drafting well, can save you from a lot of sad Sundays.

Below I have a quick write up for a few different league styles with our various cheat sheets attached like our top 200 players, tier, auction and by position cheat sheets for you to download. Good luck at your draft and here’s hoping you dominate in 2011.

Arian Foster Goes Down

It’s a bummer that Arian Foster went down with what looks to be another grade one (easiest to come back from) hamstring injury in the third preseason game. While I have confidence, Foster will be on the field week one against the Colts, it’s a hard decision to draft him number one overall. My best advice in this situation is that Foster is still the top running back to draft, but if you really like Adrian Peterson or another running back like Jamaal Charles, then by all means draft them.

It’s hard to take the number one pick in the draft, and you feel like your rolling the dice on if that player will be around for your squad. That said, Foster should put this hamstring issue behind him at some point in September, and once he’s ready to go, he’s going to be the best fantasy producer in your league.

Foster will slip in many drafts because of this news, and I would suggest those fantasy owners sitting around the fourth pick, should jump up and down inside themselves if they acquire Foster, because they are essentially getting the top running back in fantasy, and he will likely play week one after all.

Chris Johnson Still In Holdout

Another running back that is proving to be a problem is Chris Johnson as he is entrenched in a holdout who will likely last into the season. Johnson is grossly underpaid and needs a new deal, but the Titans seem reluctant to make him one of the top five highest-paid players in the game.

I would take Johnson no later than the late first round to early second round on draft day. It’s hard to find a talent like Johnson in that area of the draft, and it all likeliness, Johnson should be back by October at the latest. Again, it helps to draft your teams as late as possible in the summer, that way you have better information when making these tough decisions.

Strategy

Because you’re in more of a league that complements the big plays, receivers like Mike Wallace, Vincent Jackson, DeSean Jackson and Greg Jennings are a little more valuable. These players don’t need to rack up receptions to make them possible WR-1 players and give you better results as you won’t get a point per reception.

Running backs that don’t catch the football much like Rashard Mendenhall also hold better value as they are more of the old-style bell cow running backs that will get the football 25 times a game and will grind out the running yards.

Ray Rice First Overall Pick?

It may be hard to believe, but Ray Rice is likely to land as the first overall pick in many PPR leagues in the coming week as Arian Foster is now a health concern. If you’re ready our recent PPR first round mock draft results, I talked about the possibility of Rice begin the top pick if something should happen to Foster.

In that mock draft, Rice went as the second overall pick, and wouldn’t you know it, just after posting the article Foster went down with another hamstring injury. Rice’s ADP is right with Adrian Peterson in recent mock drafts done on Fantasy Football Calculator, and I would recommend you go with Rice in this scoring style, if you’re looking to pass on Foster.

Rice will be the teams’ goal line back and has all the tools to be a super star running back in fantasy football leagues. With the added point production for receptions, Rice should be an absolute beast this season.

Strategy

It’s important that you target running backs and receivers that amass a large number of receptions for their position. While I found that you can get away with having maybe one running back and one receiver with low reception totals, and still win a championship, you need to have other receivers that can threaten for 100 catches and a couple running backs that can rack up 50 receptions, to go with those deficient players.

Point is, you don’t want to go after too many big play type receivers and traditional bell cow running backs in this league style because you will be playing at a disadvantage. It’s not out of the question to target a receiver like Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald in the middle of the first round, but I would target running backs like LeSean McCoy before you make that decision.

IDP Cheat Sheet Overall | Tiers | Top 100

D.J. Williams Down

One key IDP linebacker that went down in the third preseason games was Broncos D.J. Williams as he dislocated his elbow as is likely to be out for the first month of the regular season. Williams was a top ten type linebacker a year ago and was likely to be a great LB-2 this season, even with a switch to the weak-side as the Broncos new defensive scheme tends to funnel plays to their side of the field.

This is a big blow to the Broncos, but you can get Williams cheap in the later rounds of your draft, if you choose to do so, and when he comes back, he can be an instant starter on your team. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes longer to recover, but Williams has a track record of being a gamer, so it will be interesting to see where he lands.

Strategy

While linebackers tend to be the top producers in the league, it’s advisable that you target a top defensive linemen like Trent Cole or Justin Tuck as your first IDP player off the board. defensive line is the hardest of the three positions to find consistency, as these players tend to rely more on big plays to score points in your league, and that can be sporadic.

Just look at the top defensive linemen from drafts in 2010, as Jared Allen was horrible in the first half of the season, but he did turn things around in the second half and posted his usual double digit sack season. My buddy Matt De Lima had Allen last year and was so frustrated with him he almost cut him off his team, but of course Matt is way to smart to do that and was rewarded with a great end of the year.

Even experienced IDP players like Matt can have frustration with even the best of defensive linemen, but in the end, these players tend to give you the numbers you need.

About a month ago, I was invited into an expert IDP dynasty fantasy football league. Expert in this instance refers to the caliber of owners involved. Every owner in the league is highly knowledgeable fantasy football writer working for prominent sites all across the web. I don’t mention this to brag since hey, this is only fantasy football but this particular league is 12 teams deep and has a 40-man roster.

I ended up having to inherit the team from a previous owner and while he had solid offensive players, his IDPs were lacking. In this particular scoring system, the former owner had guys known for big plays: interceptions, sacks and defensive return TDs. Unfortunately for me, the league’s scoring system favored tackles, a much more consistent scoring methodology for fantasy purposes.

This difference in scoring systems is the essential question that dictates an IDP’s value. Some players like Patrick Willis and Jon Beason can be counted on to put up 100-plus tackles every year. On the other hand, in a league that rewards big points for sacks, a player like Dallas’ DeMarcus Ware is more valuable since he’s had 80 sacks over his six years in the NFL

Finding undervalued sleepers is essential for success in fantasy football, and it can be especially useful in IDP leagues, if you can stay on top of player movement and which positions give way to fantasy success. I’ve found that of the three main IDP positions to draft begin defensive end, linebacker, and defensive back, it is the backs that can be the easiest area to acquire late round, to waiver wire stars.

When given an opportunity to shine at the middle linebacker spot, you can find option that may not have been fantasy relevant turn into late round gold and I believe that will be the case with Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga in 2011.

That said, even last year a stud like Charles Johnson was sitting round on waiver wires, and respectable breakout lineman like Ahtyba Rubin, James Hall and Chris Clemons were hanging around for nothing.

Below you will find those defensive linemen I believe are worthy of taking a strong look at, and options to select towards the end of your draft. Keep an eye on these names as we head through the preseason to make sure they land starting jobs, if so, they should be worth adding on your squad this summer.

It looks like the main players are signed an in camp as the dust starts to clear from what has been a wild and crazy free agent frenzy over the past few weeks. With all the changes has come the inevitable re-rankings for IDP player values as we get set to march into another full year of IDP fantasy football. Defensive end, Charles Johnson was listed as the top lineman to acquire via free agency but ultimately, he chose to stay with the Panthers as they gave him a huge contract.

Some have questioned if Johnson will be the same player this year as he’s may not play with the same motor he had when he was in line for a new contract, but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Johnson has only had one season to be a full time stater and when he was, he showed us he had what it takes to be a true DL-1 type of player.

In part, one of my free agent trackers, I covered the notable signings and trades from Tuesday through Thursday. As I write this, teams now have the ability to sign their agreed contracts, and it looks like they will be able to finalize trades starting Saturday.

While Nnamdi Asomugha was projected to be the top free agent in the 2011 class, he’s yet to select a new home as of Friday morning but that should change as the Jets are the favorites to land the prized corner.
