As we start FY15, I want to thank you for all of your contributions this past year. I'm proud of what we collectively achieved even as we drove significant changes in our business and organization. It's energizing to feel the momentum and enthusiasm building.

The day I took on my new role I said that our industry does not respect tradition – it only respects innovation. I also said that in order to accelerate our innovation, we must rediscover our soul – our unique core. We must all understand and embrace what only Microsoft can contribute to the world and how we can once again change the world. I consider the job before us to be bolder and more ambitious than anything we have ever done.
We'll use the month of July to have a dialogue about this bold ambition and our core focus. Today I want to synthesize the strategic direction and massive opportunity I've been discussing for the past few months and the fundamental cultural changes required to deliver on it. On July 22, we'll announce our earnings results for the past quarter and I'll say more then on what we are doing in FY15 to focus on our core. Over the course of July, the Senior Leadership Team and I will share more on the engineering and organization changes we believe are needed. Then, at MGX and //oneweek, we'll come together to build on all of this, learn from each other and put our ideas into action.

Our Worldview

We live in a mobile-first and cloud-first world. Computing is ubiquitous and experiences span devices and exhibit ambient intelligence. Billions of sensors, screens and devices – in conference rooms, living rooms, cities, cars, phones, PCs – are forming a vast network and streams of data that simply disappear into the background of our lives. This computing power will digitize nearly everything around us and will derive insights from all of the data being generated by interactions among people and between people and machines. We are moving from a world where computing power was scarce to a place where it now is almost limitless, and where the true scarce commodity is increasingly human attention.
In this new world, there will soon be more than 3 billion people with Internet-connected devices – from a farmer in a remote part of the world with a smartphone, to a professional power user with multiple devices powered by cloud service-based apps spanning work and life.
The combination of many devices and cloud services used for generating and consuming data creates a unique opportunity for us. Our customers and society expect us to maximize the value of technology while also preserving the values that are timeless. We will create more natural human-computing interfaces that empower all individuals. We will develop and deploy secure platforms and infrastructure that enable all industries. And we will strike the right balance between using data to create intelligent, personal experiences, while maintaining security and privacy. By doing all of this, we will have the broadest impact.

Digital Work and Life Experiences: We will deliver digital work and life experiences that are reinvented for the mobile-first and cloud-first world. First and foremost, these experiences will shine for productivity. As a result, people will meet and collaborate more easily and effectively. They will express ideas in new ways. They will experience the magic of ambient intelligence with Delve and Cortana. They will ask questions naturally and have them answered with insight from Power Q&A. They will conquer language barriers and change the world with Skype translator. Apps will be designed as dual use with the intelligence to partition data between work and life and with the respect for each person's privacy choices. All of these apps will be explicitly engineered so anybody can find, try and then buy them in friction-free ways. They will be built for other ecosystems so as people move from device to device, so will their content and the richness of their services – it's one way we keep people, not devices, at the center. This transformation is well underway as we moved Office from the desktop to a service with Office 365 and our solutions from individual productivity to group productivity tools – both to the delight of our customers. We'll push forward and evolve the world-class productivity, collaboration and business process tools people know and love today, including Skype, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Bing and Dynamics.
Increasingly, all of these experiences will become more connected to each other, more contextual and more personal. For example, today the Cortana app on my Windows Phone merges data from highway sensors and my own calendar and simply reminds me to leave work to make it to my daughter's recital on time. In the future, it will be even more intelligent as a personal assistant who takes notes, books meetings and understands if my question about the weather is to determine my clothes for the day or is intended to start a complex task like booking a family vacation. Microsoft experiences will be unique as they will reason over information from work and life and keep a user in control of their privacy.
Cloud OS: Our cloud OS represents the largest opportunity given we are working from a position of strength. With Azure, we are one of very few cloud vendors that runs at hyper-scale. The combination of Azure and Windows Server makes us the only company with a public, private and hybrid cloud platform that can power modern business. We will transform the return on IT investment by enabling enterprises to combine their existing datacenters and our public cloud into one cohesive infrastructure backplane. We will enable our customers to use our Cloud OS to accelerate their businesses and power all of their data and application needs.
Beyond back-end cloud infrastructure, our cloud will also enable richer employee experiences. For example, with our new Enterprise Mobility Suite, we now enable IT organizations to manage and secure the Windows, iOS and Android devices that their employees use, while keeping their companies secure. We are also making it easy for organizations to securely adopt SaaS applications (both our own and third-party apps) and seamlessly integrate them with their existing security and management infrastructure. We will continue to innovate with higher level services like identity and directory services, rich data storage and analytics services, machine learning services, media services, web and mobile backend services, developer productivity services, and many more.
Our cloud OS will also run all of Microsoft's digital work and life experiences, and we will continue to grow our datacenter footprint globally. Every Microsoft digital work and life experience will also provide third-party extensibility and enable a rich developer ecosystem around our cloud OS. This will enable customers and partners to further customize and extend our solutions, achieving even more value.
Device OS and Hardware: Our Windows device OS and first-party hardware will set the bar for productivity experiences. Windows will deliver the most rich and consistent user experience for digital work and life scenarios on screens of all sizes – from phones, tablets and laptops to TVs and giant 82 inch PPI boards. We will invest so that Windows is the most secure, manageable and capable OS for the needs of a modern workforce and IT. Windows will create a broad developer opportunity by enabling Universal Windows Applications to run across all device targets. Windows will evolve to include new input/output methods like speech, pen and gesture and ultimately power more personal computing experiences.
Our first-party devices will light up digital work and life. Surface Pro 3 is a great example – it is the world's best productivity tablet. In addition, we will build first-party hardware to stimulate more demand for the entire Windows ecosystem. That means at times we'll develop new categories like we did with Surface. It also means we will responsibly make the market for Windows Phone, which is our goal with the Nokia devices and services acquisition.

Our first-party devices will light up digital work and life.

I also want to share some additional thoughts on Xbox and its importance to Microsoft. As a large company, I think it's critical to define the core, but it's important to make smart choices on other businesses in which we can have fundamental impact and success. The single biggest digital life category, measured in both time and money spent, in a mobile-first world is gaming. We are fortunate to have Xbox in our family to go after this opportunity with unique and bold innovation. Microsoft will continue to vigorously innovate and delight gamers with Xbox. Xbox is one of the most-revered consumer brands, with a growing online community and service, and a raving fan base. We also benefit from many technologies flowing from our gaming efforts into our productivity efforts – core graphics and NUI in Windows, speech recognition in Skype, camera technology in Kinect for Windows, Azure cloud enhancements for GPU simulation and many more. Bottom line, we will continue to innovate and grow our fan base with Xbox while also creating additive business value for Microsoft.
While today many people define mobile by devices, Microsoft defines it by experiences. We're really in the infant stages of the mobile-first world. In the next few years we will see many more new categories evolve and experiences emerge that span a variety of devices of all screen sizes. Microsoft will be on the forefront of this innovation with a particular focus on dual users and their needs across work and life.

Our Culture

Our ambitions are bold and so must be our desire to change and evolve our culture.
I truly believe that we spend far too much time at work for it not to drive personal meaning and satisfaction. Together we have the opportunity to create technology that impacts the planet.
Nothing is off the table in how we think about shifting our culture to deliver on this core strategy. Organizations will change. Mergers and acquisitions will occur. Job responsibilities will evolve. New partnerships will be formed. Tired traditions will be questioned. Our priorities will be adjusted. New skills will be built. New ideas will be heard. New hires will be made. Processes will be simplified. And if you want to thrive at Microsoft and make a world impact, you and your team must add numerous more changes to this list that you will be enthusiastic about driving.

First, we will obsess over our customers.
Obsessing over our customers is everybody's job. I'm looking to the engineering teams to build the experiences our customers love. I'm looking to the sales and marketing organizations to showcase our unique value propositions and drive customer usage first and foremost.
In order to deliver the experiences our customers need for the mobile-first and cloud-first world, we will modernize our engineering processes to be customer-obsessed, data-driven, speed-oriented and quality-focused. We will be more effective in predicting and understanding what our customers need and more nimble in adjusting to information we get from the market. We will streamline the engineering process and reduce the amount of time and energy it takes to get things done. You can expect to have fewer processes but more focused and measurable outcomes. You will see fewer people get involved in decisions and more emphasis on accountability. Further, you will see investments in two new or combined functions: Data and Applied Science and Software Engineering. Each engineering group will have Data and Applied Science resources that will focus on measurable outcomes for our products and predictive analysis of market trends, which will allow us to innovate more effectively. Software Engineering will evolve so that information can travel more quickly, with fewer breakpoints between the envisioning of a product or service and a quality delivery to customers. In making these changes we are getting closer to the customer and pushing more accountability throughout the organization.
Second, we know the changes above will bring on the need for new training, learning and experimentation. Over the next six months you will see new investments in our workforce, such as enhanced training and development and more opportunities to test new ideas and incubate new projects. I have also heard from many of you that changing jobs is challenging. We will change the process and mindset so you can more seamlessly move around the company to roles where you can have the most impact and personal growth. All of this, too, comes with accountability and the need to deliver great work for customers, but it is clear that investing in future learning and growth has great benefit for everyone.

Finally, every team across Microsoft must find ways to simplify and move faster, more efficiently. We will increase the fluidity of information and ideas by taking actions to flatten the organization and develop leaner business processes. Culture change means we will do things differently. Often people think that means everyone other than them. In reality, it means all of us taking a new approach and working together to make Microsoft better. To this end, I've asked each member of the Senior Leadership Team to evaluate opportunities to advance their innovation processes and simplify their operations and how they work. We will share more on this throughout July.
A few months ago on a call with investors I quoted Nietzsche and said that we must have "courage in the face of reality." Even more important, we must have courage in the face of opportunity.
We have clarity in purpose to empower every individual and organization to do more and achieve more. We have the right capabilities to reinvent productivity and platforms for the mobile-first and cloud-first world. Now, we must build the right culture to take advantage of our huge opportunity. And culture change starts with one individual at a time.
Rainer Maria Rilke's words say it best: "The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens."
We must each have the courage to transform as individuals. We must ask ourselves, what idea can I bring to life? What insight can I illuminate? What individual life could I change? What customer can I delight? What new skill could I learn? What team could I help build? What orthodoxy should I question?
With the courage to transform individually, we will collectively transform this company and seize the great opportunity ahead.

1. Is is true that all C# types derive from common base class?

Yes and No. All types can be treated as if they are derived from System.Object, but in order to treat an instance of a value type (e.g int, float) as Object derived, the instance must be converted to reference type using the process called “boxing”.

2.What are the fundamental differences between Value Types and Reference Types?

Primitive types (e.g int, float, double) and structs are value types. Reference type includes classes, interfaces, strings and arrays.The basic idea is an instance of value type represents actual data stored on the stack, where as an instance of a reference type represents a pointer or reference to the data stored on the heap.

3.Does C# support multiple inheritence?

No. But C# supports multiple inheritence of interfaces, not classes.

4.Does C# have destructors?

No. But instead C# supports a method called Finalize which is almost to similar to destructors in C++.

5. What is a static constructor?

A constructor for a class rather than instances of a class. The static constructor is called first when the type is loaded. Its also called type constructor.

6.What is a virtual funtion?

We can declare a function as virtual in a base type so that derived types can provide their own implementation for the function. We have to use the “virtual” keyword to make a function virtual.

7.How do you force a derived type to provide implementation of a specific method in base type?

We need to use the “abstract” modifier on the method. Also we need to make the class “abstract”. We can’t provide any implementations for this method.

8.What is the good/useful feature of System.Exception?

The useful feature is “StackTrace” property. This provides a call stack which records where the exception was thrown.

9.How “struct”s is differed from a “class”s?

Structs are value types.
Boxing and unboxing are used to convert between struct and object.
The meaning of “this” is different for struct.
A struct is not permitted to declare parameterless instance constructor.

A struct is not permitted to declare destructors (or) finaliazers.

10.What are the access modifiers available in C#? How does access modifier affect visibility of types?

private, public, protected, internal, protected internal

private - access is limited to the containing type

public - access is not restricted

protected –access is restricted to the containing class or types

derived from the containing class

internal – access is limited to the assembly

11.What is jagged arrays in C#? Give me an example.

A jagged array is an array whose elements are arrays. It is also called “array-of-arrays”.

The following is a single-dimentional array that has three elements, each of which is a single-dimentional array of integers:

Int32[][] jagints = new Int32[][3]

12.What are the differences between “out” and “ref” in C#?

The “ref” causes a method to refer to the same variable that was passed into the method. Any changes to the variable will be reflected in that variable when the control passes back to the calling method.

An argument passed to a “ref” parameter must be initialized. But if an method parameter is marked as “out”, whose argument doesn’t have to be explicitely initialized before passed to an “out” parameter.

13.What is the nested type in C#? What is interesting about nested types?

A type declared within a class or struct is called nested type.

Ex: class A

}

The nested type can access “private” and “protected” members of its containing type, but the containing type can’t access its nested types “private” or “protected” members.

14.What is a private constructor and what is the use of it?

A private constructor is a special instance constructor. It commonly used in classes that contain static members only. In such a case other classes are not allowed to create instances of this class.

15.What are indexers? How to declare an indexer?

Indexers allow you to index a class or struct instance in the same way as an array. Indexers are similar to properties except that their accessors take parameters.

16.How exceptions are handled in C#?

Exceptions are handled through “try/catch/finally” blocks.

When the exception occurs, the runtime searches for the nearest “catch” clause that can handle the exception. The system will always executes the code in “finally” block regardless of whether an exception is thrown.

The answer is 1000. Since the struct c cast to a reference, it involves boxing. So a copy of c is made, and the GiveRaise method is called on that copy, not on the orginal object.

18.What is “new” modifier and What is “new” operator?

“new” modifier is used to explicitly hide a member inherited from a base class. To hide an inherited member, declare it in the derived class using the same name, and modify it with the new modifier.

“new” operator is used to create objects and invoke constructors.

Despite the circular references of a and b, the program is valid.

Abstract—The design mainly discussed the low powerconsumption cymometer’s circuit implementation plan. It isbased on the most practical digital system simulation VHDL language. Then through compilation, simulation, downloadedto the FPGA device up with MAX+PLUS software,investigated cymometer’s practicable. And through the use of electronic circuit simulation EWB software verified cymometer’s correct in theory.
Compare to the other cymometer ,it have a lot of advantages: It can measure the frequency of square wave signal, and show the frequency control with a digital display tube; By changing the program to reach the purpose of expanding measuring range;It also set up a range status display signal, when it excess the maximum range, it will alarm. But in addition to considering the cymometer’s small size, simple structure, high accuracy, well reliability and use convenient and so on, it’s low power consumption is a key in this design, and it incarnate this article’s significance.

Image Processor Makes for Better Photos and Performance

Today’s cameras and smartphones can remove common photographic flaws caused by limited dynamic range, which keeps shadow and highlight details from registering and puts noise speckles in darker image areas. But the software-based processors used for this can cut battery life and add annoying pauses between shots.

One solution to both these problems is an exceptionally fast and efficient image-processor chip optimized for low-power mobile devices. Graduate Student Member Rahul Rithe discussed the chip [shown below] in his paper, “Reconfigurable Processor for Energy-Scalable Computational Photography,” at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco in February.

Rithe, the lead author of the paper, is a doctoral student at MIT’s department of electrical engineering and computer science. The paper was coauthored by MIT research scientist and Member Daniel Ickes; fellow graduate student and Student Member Priyanka Raina; IEEE Fellow Anantha Chandrakasan, who heads the MIT department; and undergraduate research intern Srikanth Tenneti (now at Caltech).

“We wanted to build a high-performance system in hardware that would enhance camera images while consuming considerably less power than other graphics processors,” Rithe says.

A major difference between this dedicated chip and other processors is the approach it takes to bilateral filtering, a nonlinear technique that smooths defects without blurring detail. While fairly common in software, it is rare in hardware because it is computation-intensive, requiring much time and power. To bypass these limitations, the chip uses a bilateral grid approach that can handle bilateral filtering efficiently.“This first hardware implementation of such filtering for photography provides real-time performance with significantly lower power consumption,” says Rithe.

ADVANTAGES

The chip, a working model of which was demonstrated at the conference on a circuit board of its own, enhances photos in four ways.

First, like most camera processors, it reduces image noise (randomly occurring pixels of incorrect color or brightness), a problem when photographers shoot in low light. Reducing this with ordinary filters softens detail, but by making it practical to use bilateral filters, the new chip “eliminates random noise but preserves image details,” says Rithe.

A second advantage of the new chip is its rapid processing of the details in high dynamic range (HDR) photos. Used in many computer software programs and some cameras and smartphones, HDR captures details in both very bright and very dark areas of the picture. But doing this takes time because it requires the camera shoot a sequence of three images—one overexposed to bring out details in dark areas, one underexposed to preserve details in bright areas, and, usually, one exposed normally so as to optimize details in between the extremes. These are then merged into a single image. Cameras with built-in HDR typically spend several seconds at this, unable to take more shots until the images are merged. The new chip takes only a few hundred milliseconds to process a 10-megapixel image. “Fast enough for video in real time,” according to Ickes, yet it consumes “dramatically” less power than the CPUs and graphics processing units normally used for HDR.

The third new feature involves a new and unusual low-light-enhancement function that increases detail in low-light pictures without destroying the ambience of the scene’s natural lighting.

“Typically, shooting in low light without flash yields fairly dark images whose details are faint, often obscured by noise,” Rithe notes. “With flash we get bright, sometimes crisper, images, but the harsh lighting destroys the original ambience.”

With the new chip, however, the camera shoots both flash and ambient-light images, then splits each of these into one layer that shows just the large-scale features of the scene and a second layer containing the fine detail. The detail layer from the flash shot, rebalanced to match the color of the ambient light, is merged with the large-feature layer from the non-flash shot. The final image preserves the feeling and color of the ambient illumination while showing greater detail. This new function, yet to be implemented, is based on algorithms from another MIT group, under IEEE Member Frédo Durand, an associate professor of computer science and engineering.

The chip’s fourth enhancement counteracts glare from shooting into a bright sky or other light source. Normally, in a backlit subject the strong light washes out colors and reduces contrast, but the chip’s bilateral filtering chip corrects for this, too.

“Bilateral filtering isn’t novel,” says Rithe. “But we implemented it more efficiently by using a bilateral grid approach, which also came from Durand’s group.” The processor saves power further by relying on a lot of parallelism, which allows it to operate at low frequencies (25–98 MHz) and low voltages (0.5–0.9 V) while maintaining a high throughput. As a result, the chip consumes only 17.8 milliwatts per megapixel at 0.9 V—significantly less than software-based processors, implementing the same functions but consuming tens of watts.

The current version of the chip can be used in cameras, including DSLRs (digital single-lens reflexes) with up to 16-megapixel resolution, and the design is scalable to even higher resolutions. It can also be used in smartphones, which is “the right place for this energy-constrained and small device,” says Ickes.

Adds Chandrakasan, “This design would be suitable for anything with energy constraints, including laptops.”

Future chips along the lines of this one will be able to perform more—and more complex—image-processing functions with equal efficiency and speed. Rithe and his team are working on them now.

The Chennai 48 Hour Film Project 2013

The world’s largest and most popular short film competition, The 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) is coming to Chennai for the first time in April 2013! In our debut year we are being supported by the L.V. Prasad Academy of Film and Television.

The filmmaking weekend is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of April 26 to 28 2013. Filmmakers from all over the country of India will compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours. The winning film will go up against films from around the world.

Enter today! Space is limited.

Teams will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once the initial registration is complete, we will accept teams for the Waiting List. If a registered team must drop out, we will go to the Waiting List.

The film can be in Tamil, English, Hindi or any other language. Sub-titles are encouraged, unless it is in English or Hindi. Registration fee per team is Rs. 2500, with no bar on the team strength.

The much awaited Thalaivaa Teaser Promo has been released in the You tube and trending worldwide.Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Thalaivaa’s teaser released moments ago online amidst fervent anticipation from his legions of fans. The production house locked 11.30 a.m as the time of release for the teaser and more or less lived up to it.

The first impression of the teaser is its understated nature. The other highlights of the 48 second clipping are the picturesque camera work by Nirav Shah and G.V. Prakash’s crescendo building background score that rises powerfully from its quiet soliloquy nature.

The visuals also establish the setting of the film, which is in Mumbai as Vijay is seen looking over the Arabian Sea in an introspective mode, possibly before taking a crucial decision that will alter the course of his future. All in all, the teaser sets the tone for the film quite effectively.

About:

The Vision of the contest is to enhance the use of Solar-Renewable energy sources.
The students are expected to design their own solar reading lamp model using their creativity and technical knowledge.
Judgement will be based on innovative design,structural integrity,robustness, efficiency of the lamp. and use of green/recyclable materials.
The students are expected to register online, build their solar reading lamp and exhibit their reading lamps on 13th April, 2013 in Chennai.

Rules for the contest :

The following are requested to be presented during the contest:

1. Working model, Circuit Diagram, Logic Diagrams and Layout Diagrams .

2. Technical cost and Design cost and Individual component cost.

3. Write up describing the uniqueness, characteristics and logic of the model. Compare with other system as state as to why the proposed model is better.

4. Specification (technical) of all components of the circuit

VENUE: Solarillion Office, Near kasi Theater,Ashok Naagar, Chennai (Exact address will be Mailed to registered participants)

The lamp will be reviewed form 10am to 5pm in 7 Time slots each lasting 1hr.
Each team will be allocated one of the 7 time slots to present their Lamp.
Participants shall be present at the venue only during their respective Time Slot.

Awards:

First Prize : Rs 3,000 Cash Prize + IEEE Certificate of appreciation.

Second Prize : Rs 2,000 Cash Prize + IEEE Certificate of appreciation.

Third Prize : Rs 1,000 Cash Prize + IEEE Certificate of appreciation.

An FPGA Chip Identification Generator Using Configurable Ring Oscillator

Abstract—An improved chip identification (ID) generator,otherwise known as a physically unclonable function (PUF) is described. Similar to previous designs, a cell, i, is used to obtain a measure of the difference in period of four ring oscillators and obtain the residue Ri, a random variable. Experiments show it is normally distributed with a mean of 0. A binary output value of 0 or 1 assigned depending on the sign of Ri. When |E(Ri)| is large, this scheme consistently gives the same output.
Unfortunately, when it is small, the repeatability is compromised,
particularly when variations in operating conditions such as supply voltage and temperature are also taken into account, which is a common problem for all previous works. To address this problem, we propose a cell with configurable ring oscillators together with an orthogonal re-initialisation scheme. Together,these two techniques maximise repeatability by causing the distribution of the mean of different Ri’s to change from normal to bimodal. We implement this design in the Xilinx Spartan- 3e FPGA. Nine FPGA chips are tested, and experimental results show that the new method significantly enhances reliability of ID generation and tolerance to environmental changes. Bit flip rate is reduced from 1.5% to approximately 0 at a fixed supply voltage and room temperature. Over the 20 − 80 ◦C temperature range, and a 25% variation in supply voltage, the bit flip rate is reduced from 1.56% to 3.125 × 10 −7, which is a 50000× improvement.
