This does not mean you have no say or opinion- you absolutely do. In fact, your opinion is the final say for ALL photos that you include in your portfolio. Just keep in mind that your photographer’s input is valuable and certainly something to consider. Also, keep in mind you really want to be picking the absolute BEST of the best here. Do not choose a photo where your face looks terrible, but your usually-pale body looks tan. A tan will never take precedence over a face. You want photos that are high-quality, attention-grabbing, and that stop people in their tracks. Remember, this is your BIG chance to make a great first impression!

Robbery suspects caught after taking selfies Pictures !

Two suspected teenage robbers may have incriminated themselves after deciding to take pictures while holding a knife and wearing balaclavas.

Swedish police probably couldn’t believe their luck when they found the snaps of the girls on their phones, which were apparently taken just before the crime occurred.

One of the suspects can be seen holding a large kitchen knife, which is similar to the one described as being used in the robbery at the hamburger restaurant in Halmstad.

Around £240 was taken during the raid after the restaurant chef was threatened with the weapon, the local reported .

Police arrested the two cousins after tracing them back to their grandparent’s residence using sniffer dogs.

While carrying out a search authorities found a bag that contained a knife and balaclavas.

They later retrieved the phone containing the incriminating photos.

It later emerged one of the suspects was too young to be charged but the other 17-year-old girl will face trial.

TEENAGERS Arin Andrews and Katie Hill look like any loving young couple posing in their swimwear.

It is hard to believe that just two years ago he was a girl called Emerald and she was a boy called Luke.

Arin, 17, and Katie, 19, have both undergone surgery to change their gender.

Just over a year ago Katie, a university student, had gender reassignment surgery.

Last month Arin, who is still at school, had his breasts removed.

He says: “I hated my breasts, I always felt like they didn’t belong. Now I finally feel comfortable in my own body.

“Now when I’m out in a public pool or lifting weights, no one raises an eyebrow. They just think I’m a guy “I can wear a tank top, which I couldn’t before, and I can go swimming shirtless. I can just be a regular guy.

“And I’m so lucky to have my family and Katie to rely on.”

The couple met nearly two years ago at a support group for transgender teenagers. They bonded through their shared experiences.

Katie says: “To me, Arin’s just my Arin. He’s always looked manly to me. But now he’s had the surgery he’s much more confident and comfortable with himself.

“Being transgender myself, I understand Arin better than anybody else — how good he feels and how complete he feels.”

The teens now love to go swimming and sunbathing together like other couples.

Both their families are supportive of their relationship and say the way the teenagers, from Tulsa in the US, have supported each other has helped in their transition.

But they have not been so lucky with their peers.

Katie was bullied and Arin had to change schools when he revealed he was transgender.

He says: “I lost one of my best friends through the transition.”

Katie started her degree course last autumn but has struggled to make new friends.

She says: “I had a lot of friends in college that were really close to me. Then, all of a sudden, they just stopped talking to me.

“I think they found out I was trans through gossip and decided it was too much for them.”

Emo Clothing

The term "slim fitted" is key to dressing emo. By almost all current definitions, Emo clothing is characterised by tight emo jeans (aka drainpipes or skinnies) on males and females alike. Males also sometimes where girls jeans as they "fit better". Dresses and skirts can be worn by girls if properly paired with converse and leg warmers.

Tight emo t shirts which often bear the name of rock bands such as "As I Lay Dying" or "Cute is What We Aim For" with common iconic symbols of emo such as the broken heart, the bleeding heart, stars and the every so popular skull. Vintage shirts are also still popular including vintage-looking printed tees with random things like robots, dinosaurs, or any random icon that makes people think. Originality (at least the illusion of originality) is the key.

A dark coloured zip-hoodie is a classic must have. Like the shirts, the emo hoodies these can be plain or covered in strange ghoulish and self deprecating designs with bleeding hearts, ribs, etc.

Black is probably the most popular colour for all the emo clothing, but certainly not the only colour. Emo's generally wear less black than Goths for example.

Part One: The Emo Lifestyle

1 Emo is a state of mind. But like "hipster," "punk," and "leftist," it can mean any number of different things. Mostly, you'll just need the right attitude. Being emo is all about emotional reflection, an acknowledgment of personal anxiety, and a passion for expressive music.

Although others might consider it an easy way to call someone emotional, they aren't strictly correct. Every human is emotional, though compared to an emo every other human might as well be a Vulcan. People who are emo are simply prepared and comfortable enough to showing their natural human emotions.

2 Understand what emo is. The meaning of emo comes from music — "emo" is short for emotive hardcore, a sub-genre of post-hardcore, which still has roots in indie rock today. So its ties to music are especially strong, and they provide the basis for our common understanding of what it means to be emo. But someone who is emo have number of different ways of relating to one another and standing out. Emo is a lot of things.

So while the guy with dark hair and painted nails listening to Dashboard Confessional in Portland might be considered emo by a lot of people, the California blonde who surfs and listens to Dashboard Confessional might consider herself emo as well. There's no one judge about who's emo and who isn't.

People who are emo identify themselves through fashion, but not always. Emos have a way of dressing and expressing themselves through clothes. Some people believe that emo is a way of life and others believe it is a teenage grow out fad. If you don't like emo, try listening to screamo. Screamo is closely related to emo but with more hardcore punk influence and screaming. 2 Consider picking up an instrument. Being able to play music by yourself or in a band would give you huge credibility. Remember, though, that it takes quite a while for most people to learn an instrument and to start being able to play songs.
Try playing the bass or guitar, or perhaps even the violin, which sounds amazing in emo songs if you invest enough time in it. The drums might also be a very good instrument. You can even write poetry and turn your words into songs. The most important thing is that you're involved somehow in music.

Get a hair fringe: The hair will be straight and flat and will have hair covering the sides and back of the head along with medium to long length bangs. If you want, you could also dye the hair black.

Wear a pair of tight-fitting jeans. If you're female, you might want a pair of drainpipe jeans. If you're male, try a pair of tight jeans for guys.

If you want, have a mouth piercing.

Wear a studded belt (especially white).

Wear some short-sleeved t-shirts (especially emo band shirts such as shirts of Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, Rites of Spring or Sunny Day Real Estate)

If you wear eyeliner, it should be preferably thin and tracing the eyes. You don't have to wear eyeliner though.

During the winter, you can also wear a hoodie.

The New York Times Modern Love column can be tedious, pretentious, and downright ridiculous. But sometimes it's compelling, heartbreaking, and beautiful. Today's piece just set my tear ducts into overdrive, and although I'm incredibly exhausted today (STFU, hormones!), I'm positive I'd still sniffle if I wasn't.

Eve Pell, a freelance writer, tells her tale of romance with a man named Sam. They met when she was 68 and he was 78, and had a joint 150th birthday two years later. How fucking rad is that? I love them already. At the party, they announced their engagement, and married the next year.

Eve writes:

We came from very different backgrounds. Sam, a Japanese-American who had been interned in the camps during World War II, worked his way through college and was happily married to his Japanese-American wife for more than 40 years until her death. I grew up as a fox-hunting debutante whose colonial New York ancestors were lords of the manor of Pelham. Typical of my much-married family, I had been divorced twice.

Sam and Eve met at a San Francisco-area running club, and she quickly became interested in getting to know him better. She devised a plan to get Sam to ask her to the movies, and it worked. It became a regular thing.

One evening at the movies, after we had been seeing each other for several weeks, I felt his hand on mine. If I close my eyes and concentrate, I can recapture the moment: the dark of the theater, the warmth of his hand, my happiness.

Oh man, that is the best feeling.

But there's an issue: Sam is a widower, and still feels loyalty to his wife, the much loved Betty who died six years earlier. Eve writes that in the past she might've felt competitive with Betty's memory, but now she sees things differently:

"I know that you loved Betty very much, and I have great respect for your marriage," I began. "But I think you have room in your heart for me, too."

He hugged me and went home.

Several days later he asked, "Are you going to run the 5K in Carmel next week?"

"Yes."

"Would you like to go together?

Oh, it gets better. You must must must go read it now so we can laugh and cry together about how great love is! Eve and Sam are lucky people — lucky to be of a socioeconomic class to allow them to fully enjoy each other, and lucky to have created something so special.

Although it's a tale about finding love in your later years, it's also about the first connections you have with someone you're really into, and the rush of those first months and years. When Eve writes about Sam's hand on hers in the movie theater, it's magic. It's motherfucking magic, and I won't apologize for loving it so g-d much! I'm seriously contemplating writing fanfic about this couple's 150th birthday party. I can't explain it, I just love this so much, I hope I'm not the only one. Tell me I'm not high* and that this is the best.

Why You Keep Losing at Slot Machines

Canadian researchers report that the music and sound effects of slot machines help convey the illusion that you are winning.

Does this casino scenario sound familiar? You’re pumping money into a slot machine, very much enjoying the sense that you’re winning more often than you’re losing. Your excitement mounts—right up until that startling, disheartening moment when your money runs out.

How did you misjudge things so badly? It turns out you can’t put all the blame on those complimentary cocktails. Newly published research suggests at least part of the answer involves the slot machine’s music and sound effects.

It seems all those bells and whistles simultaneously perform two functions casino magnates love: They heighten players’ emotional arousal, even as they incite them to “significantly overestimate the number of times they won.”

On modern slot machines, where gamblers wager simultaneously on several lines, success on any one of those lines will produce the music and sound effects associated with a win.

That’s the conclusion of a research team led by psychologist Mike Dixon of the University of Waterloo, who has extensively studied the psychology of gambling. The researchers report two groups of gamblers experienced less pleasure playing silent slot machines. But they were also better judges of how well they were doing.

Writing in the Journal of Gambling Studies, the researchers describe a phenomenon they call “losses disguised as wins.” On modern slot machines, where gamblers wager simultaneously on several lines, success on any one of those lines will produce the music and sound effects associated with a win.

That holds true even if you lost on all of the other lines, resulting in a net loss on that particular wager. This leaves gamblers with the impression they’re winning (and the incentive to play more), even when they are, in fact, losing money.

To determine if the music and sound effects exacerbated this costly misconception, the researchers tested 96 regular slot machine players (a bit over half of them male). Most were recruited at the entrance of an Ontario slots venue; the experiment took place in a meeting room upstairs from the slots floor. Others were recruited online and tested at a university laboratory.

All of the participants played a simulated slot machine game, designed to look and sound like the actual machines, while electrodes attached to their skin measured changes in skin conductance (a good signal of emotional arousal). After playing a block of spins with sound, and one without sound, they were asked to estimate the number of times they won more than they wagered.

“The vast majority of players that were tested preferred the playing session where wins were accompanied by sound,” the researchers report. Skin conductance levels confirmed that the music and sound effects made the experience more exciting.

They estimated winning an average of 33 times when the sound was turned off, and 36 times when it was turned on. In fact, they won only 28 times. This suggests that (a) the multi-line game leads to the false impression of winning, and (b) the music and sound effects exacerbate this misconception, raising the rate of overestimation from 15 percent to 24 percent.

So losses are often masked as wins, and sound effects and music “may be an integral component to the disguise,” Dixon and his colleagues conclude. This, they add, helps explain the “persistence that some players experience when playing slot machines.”

Indeed, there are few things more enticing than the sound of winning money—even when it’s an illusion.

My favortie shirts are the ones with just a lil logo on them like a guitar or maybe cute teddy bear. The best thing to wear are pants best make sure they hug you close, closer the better and i dont think anyone is going to say diffrent. Jackets and hoodies, there are so many kinds of jackets that the emo guys can wear like a sute jacket, i dont think a emo chick has pulled that off yet but if you see a hott emo girl wearing a sute jacket and it dosent look bad let me know. Everyone wears pull over hoodies or jacket hoodies, if it dosent have the hood how are you supose to cover your face a little right? I see all kinds of hoodies and jackets tight and loose and lots of colors, some with band names and some without.

Dress's and skirts, yes emo girls do show of there legs even if they are pale guys this may or may not apply to you but there are alot of cute sexy emo dress's and skirts some with little designs on those are so cute. I like dress's that have a design on the shoulder like a skull or cherry. Hosery with the dress's and skirts fishnets or just black stockings i think girls should be able to be sexy no matter what it makes you feel good when you look good, you might not wear them all the time but showing some leg is always hott, no matter who you are or what you look like. And finally complete every outfit you have to have shoes, cute slip ons or just something super comfy, and there are girly shoes like a pair of mary janes, everygirl should have a pair beacuse they look so good with dress's or skirts while wearing a cute pair of hosery.

Types of Modeling

Here we will describe the many types of modeling you will find in the modeling industry. Some models only fit into one category, while another model may fit into multiple. With that in mind, here are the modeling categories at a glance:

FASHION MODEL: This category is the most exclusive and most difficult of all categories for a model to get into, much less succeed in. As a whole, a fashion model MUST be tall, young, and thin. In addition, there are fashion model “size requirements”, and hardly any exceptions made in terms of that. While there is no universally-agreed upon, OFFICIAL “fashion-industry size-standard”, the size requirements in fashion modeling are TYPICALLY as follows:

Female Fashion Models:
Model Height Requirement: 5’9” to 6”.
Model Measurement Requirement: 34-24-34. (There are exceptions within one inch, and MAYBE two, of this standard. Anything beyond that is extremely unlikely to be considered.)
Model Age Requirement: 16-21 years old.
Model Size Requirement: 0-4.
Model Weight Requirement: 105-130 lbs, directly proportional to height

Male Fashion Models
Model Height Requirement: 5’11” to 6’2”.
Model Weight Requirement: 140-165 lbs, directly proportional to height.
Model Measurement Requirement: Waist between 29” and 32”. Shirt size between 15-15 ½ neck, sleeve size between 32 and 34. Jacket size between 40 and 42.
Model Age Requirement: 18-25 years old.

EDITORIAL FASHION MODEL: These models are the ones you find in the editorial spreads of pages like Elle, Vogue, Glamour, etc. You MUST fit the modeling requirements for a “Fashion Model” (listed above) in order to be considered for this category. Almost all editorial fashion agencies in the US are based in New York, but agencies/jobs can be found in other major cities (LA, Chicago) and overseas.

FASHION CATALOG MODEL: Slightly less restrictive than fashion modeling in terms of requirements, but catalog modeling still has rigid standards nonetheless, and is also difficult to get into. Catalog models are the ones you see in the clothing catalogs, posing in a variety of outfits. Typically, only female models between 5’8” and 6’1” will find work here. Male models should be between 5’10” and 6’2”.

RUNWAY MODEL: Models that walk the catwalk or runway; a “live model.” Runway models are hired to use their bodies as a mechanism to display the fashion garments of a specific clothing designer. They MUST be tall (5’9” and up for females, 5’11” and up for males), slender, have measurements that fit the standard clothing size, and know how to walk the runway.

COMMERCIAL MODEL: Most agency models work in this category. Commercial models work MANY different jobs, including: print advertisements, catalogs, campaigns, television shows, magazines, trade shows, and much more. There are no height or size requirements to be a commercial model. So even if you are DYING to be a fashion model, but simply do not fit the size requirements for mainstream “fashion modeling”, you can still find work and book great jobs as a “COMMERCIAL fashion model”, doing fashion print and things of that nature. Not interested in being a commercial fashion model? No problem. This category of modeling accommodates MANY types of looks: from the girl-next-door, to middle-aged men, to those with very “unique/interesting” faces.

PRINT MODEL: Print models are used for many different types of publications, such as: magazines, print advertisements, billboards, posters, calendars, campaigns, booklets, flyers, banners. Print models must have an attractive face, good skin, a nice body, and a pretty smile. Print models can find modeling work in one of two ways: through a modeling agency, or by freelance modeling.

GLAMOUR MODEL: Glamour modeling focuses much more on the model’s appeal, beauty, and body than it does anything else. Models in this category are considered very pretty; able to book work simply by being attractive, a nice body, and having a sort of “sex appeal”. While there are no height or size requirements, glamour models DO have to be at least 18 years old. Glamour models can work as non-nude models, or as nude models.

Non-nude glamour models are typically hired to appear in swimsuit, bikini, lingerie, and form-fitting attire. Often times they will find work in magazines, music videos, calendars, etc. They can find work as a freelance model, and they can also find other work through modeling agencies as a print model, commercial model, or promo model.
Nude glamour models are almost never represented by a mainstream modeling agency, and most always they will find modeling work through their own means (internet, friends, referrals, casting calls, networking, etc.)

PROMO MODEL / PROMOTIONAL MODEL: A promotional model, also known as a promo model, is a model that is hired to represent a brand, product, or service. This category of modeling does not have a height or weight requirement; thus making it much easier to get into promo modeling than it is to get into many other types of modeling. While there are no height/weight requirements, there are other general requirements for booking paid promo work: a great attitude, outgoing nature, a nice smile, and the ability to easily adapt/learn.

SPOKESMODEL: A spokesmodel is a more lucrative form of promo modeling. These models tend to have signed contracts with a specific company; acting as the face of the brand, being paid to attend events and make special appearances, appearing in advertisements, and traveling the country.
TRADE SHOW MODEL, OR CONVENTION MODEL: Tradeshow or convention modeling is another form of promo modeling. These models are hired by a company to represent their brand, product, or service specifically at a trade show or convention. There are no height/size requirements, but these models need to be outgoing, reliable, work well with others, and take direction well. They also will be expected to work long hours, readily engage with other people, to quickly learn/accurately relay the company’s mission (or products or talking points) to consumers.

CATALOG MODEL: A catalog model has the same job description as a “fashion catalog model”, yet none of the same size requirements. General catalog models are needed in all shapes and sizes. There are tons of clothing designers in the world offering a variety of options, many of which cater to petite, plus-size, or alternative buyers. These designers need models of the same variety to pose for their catalogs. Almost any category of model can be used as a (general) “catalog model.”

PETITE MODEL: These are models that are on the shorter side- typically 5’4” and under. While they will not be able to find work as a fashion model, petite models can still find work in other categories, such as a print, commercial, glamour, or promotional modeling. Petite models can be sought after for their small hands/feet for print work as well.

FREELANCE MODEL: A freelance model is one that is self-represented: they are not signed exclusively to any one modeling agency, they do not have an agent or a manager, and they are responsible for finding their own work. In addition, they are responsible for their own marketing, promoting, networking, and branding. This might all sound overwhelming, but in this day and age, freelance models have many avenues to get a career started. The internet is their main weapon/source; if properly harnessed, freelance models can still make a name for themselves without an agency.

FITNESS MODEL: Fitness models are toned, in-shape, healthy, and have good muscle tone. There are no size/height requirements, but you MUST be in shape! There are modeling agencies with “fitness modeling” departments. Fitness models seeking representation should focus on these first, but fitness models can also be self-represented.

PARTS MODEL: These models typically model their “parts”, such as their hands, legs, feet, stomach, etc. There are modeling agencies that represent parts models, and the best way to get started in this modeling category is by finding an agent rather than attempting to freelance.

PLUS-SIZE MODEL: These models, also known as “Full figured models”, are models that do not fit the size requirements for mainstream modeling. They weigh more, have fuller figures, and have pretty faces. They can be hired as catalog models for plus-sized clothing brands, among many other job opportunities. Plus-sized models are able to achieve representation with modeling agencies that have a “Plus-Size” division.

ART MODEL: Art models work with visual artists. The model is the subject of the intended art piece, usually being required to pose while the artist interprets and creates a piece of art. They are able to use the model as a real-life visual aid. There are many mediums an art model can be asked to participate in. Some of the more common include paintings, illustrations, sculpture, and photography.

NUDE MODEL: Nude models typically only find work in photoshoots. Occasionally they will do videos/films, but the most common medium they work with is photography. They can pose topless or fully nude. Nude models rarely have modeling agencies. There are no height or weight requirements.

PINUP MODEL: Pin-up models first gained notoriety in the 1940’s and 50’s, with the term “pin-up” referring to a physical photo of an attractive model, which could be “pinned up” on the wall. In the past, pinup models were more risqué than their current era. Today, modern pinup models (posing in the same manner and outfits of the 40’s and 50’s), seem to be less risqué than their current era, as times have changed and so have social standards. To explain: modern pinup models can be seen wearing classic 1-piece swimsuits, while modern glamour models can be seen wearing barely-there string bikinis.

ALT MODEL, or ALTERNATIVE MODEL: This genre of modeling does not conform to “typical” modeling standards. The models used in this genre are not the mainstream, cookie-cutter models. Many of them have tattoos, piercings, unusual hairstyles, etc. They can work in this industry with the help of internet websites, networking, and niche magazines.

FETISH MODEL: A fetish model will be hired to model/display various fetishes. For example, latex clothing, bondage, foot photoshoots, etc. Almost always, these models are self-represented.

How to Build A Modeling Portfolio

Building a modeling portfolio is the first step on your path to being a model, and it immensely helps in acquiring agency representation as well. There are many ways to build your portfolio, but however you choose to go about it, you must bear in mind that your modeling portfolio is an extremely vital accessory- it can make or break modeling opportunities. Your portfolio is your first impression, and your best chance to book modeling work.

So how do you build a modeling portfolio? Well here are some modeling portfolio tips sure to help. Before you begin taking photos for your book, you will first need to determine which type(s) of modeling your look is best for. Be honest and realistic with yourself; understanding this will save you tons of wasted time and effort in the future. If you aren’t sure what the different types of modeling are- or which your look is best for, click here to read our Types of Modeling section.

If you want to be thorough, it is also encouraged that you get references from their former clients as well. Ask them to send you the names/emails of a few models that they have worked with in the past. From there, you can send a short email to the models- tell them your name, that you are requesting a quick referral on “such-and-such photographer”, and whether or not she had a positive experience. Most models are more than happy to help out with an honest reply- with the unspoken understanding, of course, that her reply stays exclusivelybetween the two of you.

This next step, while not required per se, is highly recommended. It would be a wise choice to hire a professional hair and makeup artist- mainly because your portfolio is so important, and it is far easier to do it right the first time. Ask your photographer for recommendations (he has likely worked with TONS of makeup artists), or you can search on your own if you wish. It will make a huge (and positive) impact on your photos to enlist a professional’s help. If you don’t wish to hire a professional, you can always ask friends that are cosmetologists/makeup artists/hairstylists.

After your photoshoot, the next step is the process of selecting images. Rule of thumb: make sure you are focusing on picking variety. You don’t want multiple shots in your portfolio of you standing against the exact same chain-link fence wearing the exact same yellow dress. Also, make sure to include a smiling headshot, a non-smiling headshot, a ¾ length shot, and a full body shot. From there you have a bit more freedom on what else you’d like to include, as long as the photos still fit within your chosen ‘genre’ of modeling.

When choosing your shots, you will want to enlist the advice and counsel of your photographer once again, as he is better trained at judging quality shots than you are (no offense!). This does not mean you have no say or opinion- you absolutely do. In fact, your opinion is the final say for ALL photos that you include in your portfolio. Just keep in mind that your photographer’s input is valuable and certainly something to consider. Also, keep in mind you really want to be picking the absolute BEST of the best here. Do not choose a photo where your face looks terrible, but your usually-pale body looks tan. A tan will never take precedence over a face. You want photos that are high-quality, attention-grabbing, and that stop people in their tracks. Remember, this is your BIG chance to make a great first impression!

Finally, keep in mind that your photos should be 8×10” prints in pristine condition (no bends or folds). These photos should be placed inside a high-quality portfolio book. Every detail counts- don’t start cutting corners now, because this the last step in building your modeling portfolio!

How to Become a Freelance Model ?

If you haven’t yet been signed to a modeling agency, or if you simply like the idea of “being your own boss” without the help of a modeling agency, then freelance modeling may be for you.

“Freelance modeling” means that you are representing yourself. You will be responsible for finding and booking your own work. You will be responsible for building your own portfolio, marketing yourself, educating yourself about the modeling industry, networking, updating your resume… and the list goes on. Seems like a lot of hard work, right? Well, that may be true- but for MANY people, the flexibility and freedom of freelance modeling is more-than-worth the effort required! Upon achieving their first bit of success, that momentum propels many into experienced, well-known, and even full-time, professional models… all without any agency telling them what to do.

FREELANCE MODEL REQUIREMENTS

There are no actual physical ‘requirements’ to be a freelance model… but being highly-attractive with a toned body and a great smile is DEFINITELY going to help you along the way. Freelance models can work in as many fields of modeling as they would like. They can work as print models, promo models, commercial models, fitness models, glamour models, art models, catalog models, music videos models, magazine models, and much more.

There are plenty of opportunities for freelance models these days, especially with the help of the internet. It is just a matter of finding the work, having a great attitude, arriving early to every job, being reliable, respecting your coworkers, and making contacts within the industry as you go along. The more satisfied clients you impress with your professionalism, the more referrals you receive. These lead to more jobs… and the cycle continues.

FREELANCE MODELING JOBS

The good news about being a freelance model is that although you are not exclusively signed to a modeling agency, you may still be signed non-exclusively with as many modeling agencies as you want! Your non-exclusive modeling agencies will submit you for work and get you booked on jobs… and the more agencies you are signed with, the more opportunities that will be sent your way. Note: you WILL have to pay a percentage to them, but many of these agencies are able to secure high enough modeling rates that it is totally worth giving them 10%. (Side note: we will be adding tons of future posts on the subject of non-exclusive modeling agencies, how to get signed, expectations and etiquette when on the job for them, etc. We also have a GIANT list of non-exclusive modeling agencies around the country, which we will be sharing with our readers as well. In addition to going the non-exclusive route, you can also find freelance modeling work on your own, thanks to our good friend… the Internet! A great website to search for modeling castings and find freelance gigs iswww.ModelMayhem.com. Be sure to include your contact information, have a good selection of your portfolio photos uploaded, and include a short (yet thorough) blurb about your modeling conditions: for example, explain what types of modeling work you will and will not accept, whether you will shoot TF*/TFP or if you require paid work only, etc.

The best method to search for modeling work on ModelMayhem is to click on their “Castings” section (http://www.modelmayhem.com/casting/search_casting). Input your search terms as follows: choose Artist Type (Either Female Model or Male Model). Enter your location in the drop-down menu. If you would like to search for all casting types, then forgo this step and just click search!

You can also search for freelance modeling gigs on Craigslist, BUT YOU NEED TO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL. But until then, please heed our advice, and proceed only with your best judgment when it comes to finding work off of Craigslist. FREELANCE MODELING RATES

Freelance model rates certainly vary with each and every individual. Many modeling gigs have a predetermined rate, set by the company hiring you, which is disclosed before you agree to the job. Modeling jobs, rates, hours, and job duties vary WIDELY with each and every individual job. It is impossible to say you should expect one general “rate”, because it is entirely situational. (We will go in-depth on this subject in future posts as well).

As far as photoshoots go, there will likely come a time when you decide you want to start charging for some photoshoots, while continuing to shoot TFP for select photoshoots. (Disclaimer: This “time” should NOT come if you have only done 3 photoshoots, ever, yet decide that you deserve to start charging money because you feel like an ‘experienced model’ now… just sayin!)

Depending on your level of experience, how impressive your portfolio is, your look, what you can add to the photographer’s portfolio, how many positive referrals you can provide, etc., a good “starting off” rate can be somewhere around $50/hour. You can certainly adjust it as time goes along. You will know when the time has come to raise your rates- but DON’T get greedy. Evaluate your progress, analyze your strengths, and choose a rate that you genuinely feel is fair.

However a professional, official website reflects upon you in many ways. There are plenty of models who don’t bother taking this step. If those models are applying for the same job as you (sending their Facebook link), and you are applying with a link to your actual website… how much more professional do you look by comparison?
