<p><p>I love the way many parents these days are getting back to being crafty. Making stuff, up cycling things, getting more &#8216;back to basics&#8217; like eating whole foods and being more conscientious about reading ingredient labels and being crafty. Check &#8230;</p></p><p>The post <a href="http://www.ifonlytheytoldme.com/getting-crafty-and-hatchlings-product-review/">Crafty Kids and Hatchlings Product Review</a> appeared first on <a href="http://www.ifonlytheytoldme.com">If Only They Told Me</a>.</p><div class="feedflare">

<itunes:summary>One of the super-cool things about being a 'Blogger' is that we get to meet some amazing and inspiring people from around the world. Well, when I say 'meet' I'm including e-meeting someone (via skype). Like the patient and profound Emily Keniston who I interviewed about her blog Simple Little Home or my upcoming interview with eco and ethical-minded mum Lara Charles from Planet Goodness.

Well this week, I had the pleasure of chatting with Megan McGrory Massaro and Miriam J. Katz all the way from Boston, USA. These lovely ladies co-wrote the book 'The Other Baby Book' - A Natural Approach to Baby's First Year.

Their book covers everything from relating to baby to self care to baby-led weaning. Click the player to listen to what they have to say about pregnancy, parenting and co-sleeping. In this episode we discuss co-sleeping or 'bed sharing' and dispel some of the myths.

So what are these 'myths' around co-sleeping? I have to admit I did ask the 'relationship' question. 'How do you find time to be romantic as a couple when you've got a baby/toddler sleeping in your bed?'. Rest assured the ladies both responded that intimate moments need not be confined to the evening. "My husband and I both work from home, so when our daughter is napping...". Well well ladies -very impressive. It reminds me of a comment Jacqui made in our Keeping the Love Alive podcast about putting a dvd on for the kids in the afternoon and heading for the bedroom. Hmmm a bit trickier for those of us with three kids but still good inspiration!

In response to the 'is it safe' question that often comes up about 'bed-sharing' it was good to hear similar comments to what was advised in our blog about Strategies for Safe Sleep for Babies with Jude Clarke. The baby needs it's own safe space to sleep, on their back and with a clear face. We also talked about 'when does the baby/child transfer into their own bed?'. This of course will vary from child to child and family to family but the goal is that the child feels safe and loved.

Megan and Miriam met when their babies were young and they shared an interest in a more natural approach to parenthood. I love this description of their book on The Other Baby Book website: "The Other Baby Book: A Natural Approach to Baby’s First Year guides new and expecting mamas on a journey past 'shoulds' and 'musts', back to the heart of true joy and relationship. Motherhood has been targeted by advertisers, and bombarded by opinions masquerading as medical necessities. Our intention is to help mothers reclaim a simpler, more connected first year with their babies."

On May 11 EST they will be offering their book for FREE as a kindle e-book. You'll have 12 hours to go to the website and get it for free! Click this link

<itunes:summary>Last week I was lucky enough to meet author of Confessions of a Coffee Group Dropout, Eleanor Black. If you haven’t read this hilarious book then make sure you read it now. It is lots of fun and full of real anecdotes from Eleanor’s own experience as a first-time mother, as well as titbits and stories she picked up from other mothers.

Eleanor, a journalist, with several unfinished novels languishing in her cupboard, started writing the book when her son, Micah was just a few months old. As she says, she wrote it as she lived it and it was a very raw time for her. In it she talks about her pregnancy and her journey as a mother – and her experience on the coffee group circuit.

Eleanor was shattered when she turned up at the studio the other day. She had been up all night with a teething 14 month old and one of the things we chatted about was how much life changes when motherhood takes over – no matter how prepared you THINK you are, you are never totally prepared. Tiredness can be debilitating and if you think you are tired BEFORE being a mother then you aint seen nothing yet.

As well as the tiredness aspect of motherhood, Eleanor and I chatted about a heap of other stuff in the studio – from mothers guilt, to how unsupportive mothers can be on each other, she shared her guilty little mothers secrets…and she talked about her experience as a coffee group dropout.

You can hear the whole podcast here – but here’s a taster of some of what we chatted about.

The Politics of Motherhood
Motherhood can be highly political. From whether you are breast-feeding or bottle feeding, home pureeing baby food or buying store jars, swaddling or not swaddling, whether you have your baby in a routine, or you’re up all night feeding on demand – every aspect of parenting brings advice and opinions – all of them varied and all of them thrust forcibly upon you.

Us mums can actually be really hard on each other –the pressure we are under as a mums is hard enough – without having to ‘conform’ to what the majority of mums are doing around you.

Eleanor talks about the importance of supporting each other. She has a fabulous memory of supermarket shopping with Micah when a complete stranger came up to her to congratulate her on how well she was doing as a mum.

*We should do more of that kind of stuff for each other ladies – make sure you remember to remind your Mummy Friends that they are doing a great job. They all need to hear it.
Mothers' Guilt
We all have guilty little mothering secrets. Whether it’s not giving your baby enough tummy time. OR slumping in front of the television watching garbage rather than reading your child a story….Eleanor’s own guilty-little secrets were:

	She ate sushi every week
She died her hair when she was pregnant
She hates kids music and never puts in on in the car

What’s YOUR Guilty Little Mother's Secrets…? Share it with us in the comments below to go in to the draw to win your own copy of Confessions of a Coffee Group Dropout. *You’ll have to wait to Nat & My book – out later this year – to find out ours.
Coffee Group DropOut
Eleanor was a coffee group dropout. She dropped out of 2 coffee groups. She believes that there are a lot of people out there who don’t fit into the coffee group thing and all coffee groups are different. Some are great – some are competitive little ‘vipers nests’. She herself, didn’t enjoy her experience at coffee group with nothing whatsoever in common with the other mothers. She found there was a lot of one-up-man-ship and it was highly competitive – and it was missing the supportiveness she craved and needed at that point in her life.

I personally, had a great coffee group experience but there are probably a lot of other mothers out there who have had similar experiences to Eleanor. You don’t have a lot of time – you’re tired and you are finding your feet as a new mother. So, why waste your time with people you have nothing in common with?</itunes:summary>
