Bossk, the Underdog

2012-01-20T20:27:00.000-08:00

Today, I visited my friend, an enthusiast of Lego, at his natural habitat, the Lego Store.

I gave him a long overdue visit after his numerous requests to visit his workplace, and it was not a regrettable decision. There was a plethora of bricks and minifigure parts for one to assemble any creation he or she so desired to make, for the right price, of course.

At the front of the cash register, there was a variety of keychains on sale, generally going for $5. Ones of lesser popularity were sold at cheaper prices, including a Bossk keychain, for less than $2.

I knew Bossk to be an associate of Boba Fett, being a rival and on occasions a partner to his fellow bounty hunter.

For some strange reason, I felt pity for the fictional character that his importance in the Star Wars universe would go unnoticed, and at the end, I purchased one.

It was not a regrettable decision. Despite the fact that I have no use for a key chain other than the one attached to my wallet, it now sits on top of my desk, plotting a way to finally best his rival in crime. Overall, the experience was an interesting way to start the weekend.

It is Cold in November

2012-01-03T15:22:00.000-08:00

This post was written in November for a school newspaper, regarding the Occupy Toronto movement. Readers will be indifferent to know that the article was completely unbiased towards either side of the movement.

Occupy Toronto is a peaceful demonstration protesting against economic inequality, based on the Occupy Wall Street movement. (Can you guess where that is?) It began in the middle of October, near Bay Street, before protesters moved to St. James Park and set up camp. Aside from minor inconveniences, the police and the rest of the world have been fairly tolerant.

So far, only two people were arrested in Toronto, one for trespassing, and the other for undisclosed reasons. In terms of protests, there was no commotion in Canada, until quite recently. Mayor Rob Ford had expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing occupation of the park, stating that “it is time that we ask them to move”, and that he was formulating a plan regarding the occupation.

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, the death of a protester has resulted in the city’s attempts to dismantle the encampment, and in London, Ontario, tents were forcibly removed by the police, returning Victoria Park to its tranquil state once more. Currently, the commotion in St. James Park seems to be dying out as well, with some protesters relocating to Queen’s Park.

The time and manner of Rob Ford’s promise is an enigma that only time will tell. Remember to dress warmly!

Great Revival: 2012

2012-01-03T15:20:00.000-08:00

After ten months of deep meditation and training in the Korean mountains, I have at last returned to spread the good news! If you believe, you can achieve! If everyone believes in me, that I will be able to write amazing blogs on a regular basis once again, then I will achieve! Let us look towards a bright future and the year 2012!

Libya

2011-03-13T13:20:00.000-07:00

As promised, here is a blog post about what's happening in Libya.

Libya is an oil-rich nation in North Africa, known to many as "Libya".

It is led the a tyrannical ruler Colonel ~~Sanders~~ Muammar Gaddafi, and lately, there have been protests against him to stop doing what he's doing. This has gone to the point that Gaddafi had responded with police brutality, and he has lost a significant portion of the country to the rebels.

Muammar Gaddafi has gained even more infamy due to the current events that have occurred. He is known for his megalomania, and his eccentric personality, almost bordering insanity; a danger to himself and his people.

Is this twisted emperor fit to lead his people? What will be the future of the nation?

All we can do is believe;

believe for a brighter future.

Update

2011-03-05T20:56:00.001-08:00

A bit busy this week but still trying to make as much posts as I can.

Bear with me, my friendship allies!

Next week (13th and onward), I will unleash exciting posts such as:

Fringe season 1 synopsis and review

A post and (hopefully) a discussion about what's happening in Libya

And the long-awaited update to the main theme of this blog that needs no explanation.

Television Show Review: Fringe

2011-03-04T20:09:00.000-08:00

Very minor spoilers: first episode or so

Fringe is a science-fiction show that started in 2008, created by J.J. Abrams, among others. This name may be familiar to those of you who were a fan of the series Lost, which ended in 2010. J.J. Abrams has created other shows and movies such as Alias, Star Trek (2009) and Cloverfield.

The show takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, following the cases of the Fringe Division, a division of the FBI dedicated to solving crimes that, as the name implies, are scientific with dubious scientific procedures.

The main character is Olivia Dunham, who, after her lover dies, joins the Fringe Division. She is assisted by Peter Bishop, a civilian consultant for the Fringe Division, and former con-man. He is also the guardian of his father, Walter Bishop. Walter Bishop is a "mad scientist" who, while being eccentric at times, is always a big help to the Fringe Division whenever there is a new case.

I feel reluctant to say a lot about this show, since it's fairly new, and it would just be awful for me to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, or is watching it right now. The show is at its 3rd season, and the plot is already very intricately woven. I will make posts per season finale, summarizing and giving my opinion about the whole season, most likely when season 3 ends.

Movie Review: Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

2011-03-02T19:43:00.000-08:00

Today, I watched the first Evangelion movie. It came out in 2007, and it is based on Neon Genesis Evangelion, a popular anime and manga that debuted in the 90s.

I thought it was an enjoyable movie, both for the hardcore Evangelion fans, and viewers that were new to the series.

The movie is an adaptation of the first six episodes of the anime, and although the chronology was slightly altered, it still has the same bright and adventurous cast of colourful characters, the mysterious plot that continues to boggle the mids of viewers both young and old, as well as the mysterious EVAs that we all adore.

This is (Definitely) a Lie.

The movie was still enjoyable; that wasn't a lie. But calling the protagonist "bright and adventurous" would be like saying that tipping an ill-tempered waiter "essential", "expected", and "it would stop global warming". The protagonist is one of the most depressing characters in the history of Japanese entertainment. Shinji Ikari hates his father, and he hates life. He feels forced to pilot the Evangelion, so while the gigantic robot is beating the pulp out of "extraterrestrial" beings called "Angels", you are forced to hear about how Shinji doesn't want to pilot the Evangelion. It's some kind of subliminal messaging. You force yourself to endure the tribulation of hearing words come out of Shinji's mouth, hoping that through some sort of unpredictable plothole, Shinji can accept the universally enigmatic concept known as "life", and get on with destroying more Angels, which is what most of the audience wants to see, especially most of the younger viewers, who have no idea or care regarding the series at all. Some young viewers have had, or have researched some background knowledge regarding the original anime. (bonus points for you if you looked into the amazing secret ending) At least they don't call it Gundam or anything, or complain about how the Evangelions don't combine.

Secondly, the plot. The tongue-in-cheek statement about the EVAs apply to this as well. The plot is the most confusing thing that has been spawned into existence. If Confucius saw it, he would probably have a stoke, forever. Just imagine "Inception" meets "The Sting", except it's in Japanese. Not only would you not understand what they are saying, the Japanese are masters at pulling strings inside your head to alter you emotions or comprehension skills, and it would take an unpredictable genius to come up with an explanation regarding such an intricate and complicated plot that is Evangelion. Most of the plot has to do with Angels and the EVAs, and the rest of the brain-boggling plot has to do with something else (mentioned in the entire previous paragraph) that you will never care about. Second Impact, Angels, SEELE, and EVAs are some keywords that will ring a bell inside anyone who had seen several episodes of the anime. If at any point of the review, you were expecting some answers regarding the enigmas I am complaining about, or even some theories, then prepare for the greatest disappointment of your life. Not only am I incapable of forming any theories that do not contradict the rest of the lore, it would probably confuse other readers with different theories. To sum up the entire paragraph: the lore is confusing and it's a health concern, and anyone who are over 60, or have a heart condition, or mental illnesses, or is not a qualified genius, should not watch this movie expecting explanations. It's a cartoon, for crying out loud. They didn't explain how Daffy Duck is invulnerable to everything except pain. If you want to watch something that gives you all the answers on a silver platter, you should probably go watch Lost or somethi-oh, wait.

This anime leaves you with more questions than answers. To be frank, it's imperfect: which only makes you want to watch it even more. Somehow, despite all the questionable content in this anime, I would say that Evangelion is definitely an essential experience for anyone who wishes to pursue the viewing of other anime or manga, especially if the viewer is interested in robots. Evangelion is part of the real robot genre, and on the other side of the same robot-anime coin, you have the super robot genre, with trademark names such as Mazinger Z, Astro Boy, Combattler V, and the like. Like the name implies, Neon Genesis Evangelion is realistic, like Gundam. You have ammunition, and imperfections in the robots as well as the pilots. I guess a part of the experience is that the movie itself is "realistic", and it can better coax the viewer into its world, allowing the viewer's mind to roam free within the "virtual-reality" of Evangelion, and form his/her own theories, interpretations, and opinions regarding the experience.

On hindsight, I guess I was doing a review on the whole series, or at least, as far as I watched it.

Keep your eyes peeled for my review on the second Evangelion movie, "Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance", where you can expect your questions to not be answered.

Overall, I would rate this series 8/10. It was in high-quality, had good fight scenes, and wasted no time in advancing the plot.

If you disagree with my rating, or anything I said in the review, or if you agree with what I said, feel free to comment your opinion, or even make your own blog post about it! I await with anticipation for your feedback regarding this controversial masterpiece.

The Beginning to a Friendship Adventure

2011-02-28T18:31:00.000-08:00

Throughout history, the "lesser" people were abused by the higher-uppers of society.

Ridiculed and beaten, but not bested; the people soon united against the higher-uppers, and brought them down. With the power of friendship.

In this blog, I will be making several posts a week regarding the values and characteristics of the different kinds of friendship, along with some other posts regarding the latest news, be it entertainment or politics, local or international. I will also make periodic reviews regarding various movies, shows, or games.

Together, you and I, too, can topple the oppressive higher-uppers of the world, and restore peace and order to the world. We can do it, and we will. This is the beginning of our friendship adventure.
