Today, 13 May, is exactly one week before the launch of the book ‘European Radio Documentary: a History of the Format and its Festivals‘.
The official moment is on 20 May and on the Golden Jubilee IFC (50th anniversary) in Rome.
This one-of-a-kind book is written by Tereza Reková, an award-winning producer, screenwriter and podcaster from the Czech Republic.
Accompanying the book is a podcast (QUOTECAST about Radio) with many quotes and interviews.
We are happy and proud to pre-present this today!

For the first time in its 50 years long history the International Features Conference (IFC), the annual meeting point for storytellers on radio from all over the globe, will be the main topic of a book.
Author is colleague radio maker Tereza Reková, Ph.D.

The work European Radio Documentary : a History of the Format and its Festivals is a milestone in the era of audio storytelling and a gem for creative radio lovers. 

The book delves into the history of radio documentary and examines the changes that happened to the primarily European community in the 5O years of the IFC’s existence and the issues that the genre had to overcome to become what it is known as to today. 
More studied events are Prix Europa, Prix Italia, the Third Coast International Audio Festival and the HearSay Audio Arts Festival. 

Based upon intensive research and in depth interviews with the actors in the field, Tereza Reková tells the saga of passionate explorers of the power and the poetry of the most discrete of all media. 
She does so with bravura, humor, gentle impertinence and clear historical insight.

These are this year’s masters:

Yasmina Hamlawi first travelled through many countries with a pen in hand.
As a lawyer in international law, and then as a journalist, she has devoted herself to reporting on the living conditions of women in the Arab world, the Middle East, and also in the Indian subcontinent.
She wrote for different newspapers in France and Belgium.
Then she discovered creative sound documentaries.
She appreciates the new dimensions that sound language brings: its shades, its richness, its musicality and its silences.
She is particularly fond of portraits, drawing people’s destinies with a microphone, giving voice to the intimate.
Her latest sound documentary, “Perle”, is a portrait of Fos, a Somali refugee in Belgium, who, after an excision and a forced marriage, decides to reclaim her body and her independence. Documentary was awarded Grand Prix URTI 2021 and Prix Europa 2022

Anne Pilegaard-Petersen has worked with audio for more than a decade, starting at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation but now working independently as a part owner of the Copenhagen-based production company MonoMono.
She mainly work within the field of documentary and reportage with a focus on the stories and voices of people who are rarely heard or covered in the daily media flow.
These private and often sensitive narratives always have a social and political aspect, telling not only a singular, personal story but also painting a bigger picture about the society in which we live.

Studiolanda is a multidisciplinary duo based in Sardinia, Italy.
They focus on reuse practices, with a specific interest in audiovisual, graphic and textual archives.
They bring different technical skills into play, imagining narrative forms that exceed the rigidity of recognizable categories, combining seemingly distant practices of drawing, translation, self-construction and listening.
Their first radio documentary, Iolanda mi nant de nòmini, received the mentorship and co-production grant YASS! from Radio Papesse in 2021. It was broadcast on Rai Radio 3 within the program Zazà – meridione, cultura società in April 2022.

Gabriel Gatehouse went into journalism after failing to cut it as a jazz pianist.
Instead he began cutting reel-to-reel tape with a razor at the BBC’s Russian language service, and went on to become an award-winning foreign correspondent.
For many years he was International Editor at the BBC’s Newsnight programme, where he reported on conflicts across the world, from Libya and Syria to Hong Kong and Ukraine.
He has since left the BBC to pursue long-form documentary making.

Local icon, universal angel

Sofia Saldanha passed away last sunday morning, 25th of December, evaporating from a body that could no longer go ahead.
But she is echoing inside us forever.

She will be missed terribly: hearing her laughing, seeing her with the headphones recording and listening to the sound, or watching her hands editing so many wor(l)ds and silences…

Radio was a nest, and a family for her: a family she always generously amplified, from the original days at Radio Universitária do Minho in Braga, back in the 90’s (when she also joined Sindicato da Poesia, a poetry reading outstanding group), until some of her last “works still in progress” for Antena-2, poesia.fm and other radios or cultural projects now in 2022.

In the widest wave of the middle of life, her radio rainbow went around the world, making Sofia probably the most international iberian radio artist ever, from Radio Atlas to BBC and so many other frequencies, festivals or art projects.
Nominations and prizes came naturally, from Third Coast to Marulic, HearSay, Prix Europa and more…
This exact year, some fellows of the radio family were unfair with Sofia.
One of her last pieces was taken out of a prize, after being initially nominated because she couldn’t be present physically, on spot, at the listening and voting jury sessions.
Independent freelancers cannot easily “pay” for “representatives”.
Independent freelancers who are struggling to stay on air cannot… [Sofia is now smiling – like always – and simply saying: “We are not going to waste time with that, Laura… let’s talk about something else more important, what’s the next story to record?”]

Within the collective In The Dark she was engaged for years in organising public listening sessions in London, Lisbon, Berlin.
Her sound work is delicate, elegant, honest and very true.
And so many times, it’s pure sound literature, like the Lisbon audioguide following Fernando Pessoa’s life and steps.

Sofia became ill a little over a year ago.
During the last months, despite the relapses, she continued creating, giving kindness to others and smiling.
“A tender poet” says Eleanor McDowall, “un’anima gentile“, waves Daria Corrias.
“Pure goodness in person”, loops João Almeida, from Antena-2, the portuguese public radio.
“Our beloved Sofia”, whisper so many of us.
“An icon from Braga”, headlines a journalist from her hometown, on the edge of fairly saintifying her.

Sofia was a free radio author, she fought for her own projects, one by one, for her pieces, for her truth, with no other ambition than to love strongly what we do.

Engaged with herself.

Sofia gave me a sister in Braga, her lovely friend Helena.
The two of them made me love the Minho region when I lived there and showed me how big and good one heart can be in a woman, a woman like Sofia. 

We will be sharing more of her audio pieces in the future, and more info about upcoming listening sessions with her.
Yes, with her.
Because Sofia stays on us.
Sofia is a channel.
A poetry channel.
Every time someone listens to her, one is being touched by an angel.

“Unlike his German colleagues, I never knew Wolfgang Bauernfeind as a broadcaster, as an editor or even as a producer.
Yet he was, for me, one of my dearest European colleagues.
He epitomised for me everything that was happiest and most rewarding in international friendships. 

I’d already singled Wolfgang out as someone special from his insightful and thoughtful comments in Prix Europa discussions in the big studio in the Haus des Rundfunks.
But it was again in that same inspiring place that Wolfgang and I became firm friends.
Asked by Leo Braun to co-lead the Radio Documentary jury deliberations, Wolfgang and I developed a strange and impromptu double-act.
We were the Laurel and Hardy of that particular year in Masurenallee, and each occasion when we stood up to record attendance, remind people to be punctual or to introduce the next playback turned into a comedy routine.
I can’t say why, but it just happened; and that was when I developed a real love for this plump, funny-yet-serious, delightful man. 

A delightful evening at Wolfgang’s beautiful flat with his wife and Peter Klein from ORF has remained in my memory ever since and, each time we met, usually between the stacks of pigeon-holes in the foyer of the Haus, we would head for one another to embrace like long-lost brothers.
“Eine kleine Glas Rotwein?” was the inevitable next remark by Wolfgang, eyes a-twinkle.
And there were many of those glasses of rotwein.

We’d shared a love of and often spoke about music.
And, when Wolfgang retired from RBB, I wanted London to salute the moment.
So I organised a pair of tickets – as rare as hen’s teeth, as we say in English – for him and his wife to attend the Last Night of the BBC Proms.
It’s always an amazing concert and was something that I had myself never been able to do.
But I wanted my friend Wolfgang and his wife to taste what is the most eccentric classical music occasion in the world.
The Controller of BBC Radio 3 agreed it was only fitting for Herr Bauernfeind to attend.
Which he did, spending a weekend in London and visiting me and my wife at home.
I remember Wolfgang said it was the first time he’d been to a classical music concert that resembled a football match!

Since he retired, he did tireless work in Cambodia and we shared an appreciation of that fascinating country.
We even had plans to work together there at one stage. 

So I will deeply miss my dear German colleague who was one of the best of my international friends.
And now, for the last time, I raise eine kleine Glas Rotwein to you, dearest Wolfgang.
The world will be a less interesting – and less fun – place without you!”

Wolfgang was what we say in French “un homme du monde”.  
Classy, dressed with taste and comfort fit (could have put more tweed), voluptuous gastronome, alert wine connaisseur, every inch a gentleman, funny spirit, optimistic world observer and a most seductive tango dancer.
And beside all of that of course an inspired radio documentary maker!
That is a lot to miss.

“How terribly sad. Lars-Helge Myklebust died 26.7.22.
He was the kindest man in the world.
And the most important man for The Radio Documentary Department I NRK in the years when the department was built from nothing to Prix Europa and Prix Italia winners.

As group leader he used all his power and will to give us co-workers the best conditions for making radio documentaries, and the best possible  counselling.
He worked endless days and evenings to make others succeed.
With humour, seriousness, and always with warmth, very much warmth, it is impossible to think of Lars-Helge without being soft in the heart by how kind he always was.
To all our celebrations and jubilees he always made a new and funny and a little rude song.
He was a well of humour, was essential in building up the Night Radio, and helped uncountable NRK radio makers in the weekly news program Ukeslutt to make their reportages better, every week, with no thoughts of himself, while he himself was making radio documentaries.

Now I can’t stop thinking of if we ever gave him enough thanks  and praise for all that he meant for us, because so kind people seldom get the praising they deserve while they live.
So sadly enough I have to say it now, into the big empty room he has left after him: Dear Lars-Helge, I am so grateful for everything!”

Karolis is a blind skier.
Together with his guide Vytenis, they are training to get accepted to the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing.
This would be their first competition at the Paralympics. Moreover, Lithuania would get its representatives there for the first time since 1994.
And the duo accepts the challenge.

Karolis is recognized as a B1 category athlete.
It means that he is completely visually impaired.
It also means that every second on the slope has to be described to him by Vytenis.
Karolis and Vytenis are training routinely to improve their performance.

However, their biggest challenge is learning to trust each other unconditionally.
A tiny miscommunication on their way downhill can cause serious injury for Karolis.
The team’s success depends on Karolis and Vytenis’ ability to learn to function like clockwork.
In this process, the relationship between the two develops and gets challenged.
