APRIL 21ST 2011: THE REVIVE DA LIVE BIG BAND TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY G.U.R.U & THE JAZZMATAZZ LEGACY FT. SPECIAL GUESTS
Revive Music Group celebrates their 5th Anniversary with a mind-bending, monumental Revive Da Live Big Band Tribute to G.U.R.U. and the Jazzmatazz Legacy under the direction of pianist Marc Cary and trumpeter Igmar Thomas, featuring some of G.U.R.U.’s legendary collaborators as special guests. Special Guests wi...ll be announced in the following weeks. The celebration will be held Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City and is brought to you in conjunction with the Elam family in memoriam of the 1st Anniversary of Keith “G.U.R.U” Elam’s passing.

Keith Elam aka Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal or Guru, departed this earth on April 19, 2010. He left behind a legacy of innovation, creativity, and experimentation among his many other gifts. Whether contributing his raspy voice to the production of DJ Premier in Gang Starr or fusing his vocal abilities through his own Jazzmatazz projects, G.U.R.U. always pushed the boundaries. Among the many collaborators on the Jazzmatazz albums, jazz legends such as Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, and Branford Marsalis shined as instrumental innovators in the field of hip-hop.

The event will include a Raffle by G.U.R.U.’s nephew, Justin Elam-Ruff, debuting the The X Label: G.U.R.U.’s Clothing Line - “Preserving his MESSAGE, his MUSIC, his LEGACY.” Special appearances by the Elam family and G.U.R.U’s renowned collaborators will make this a truly unique event.

All donations and net proceeds will go to support Keith’s son, K.C. Elam.

Deep within the Lower East Village in New York, inside the doors of an unassuming storefront, lies the intimate music venue Nublu. Known for building the careers of the Brazilian Girls, Wax Poetic, Norah Jones and more, the space provided the perfect cozy nook for soul outfit Alecia Chakour & The Osrah to make their New York debut a few weeks ago. We got a chance to catch the action as it was happening live.
Check out the group’s take on Issac Hayes’ rendition of the Burt Bacharach classic “Walk On By.” Its got a dreamy, woozy feel to it – a real brooding soul-psychedelic vibe.

The Evolution Series has become a major staple in the national and international scene in jazz music. Spearheaded and organized by Meghan Stebile and musician Igmar Thomas of Revive Music Group, the weekly Tuesday night jam sessions bring rock, soul, jazz, and hip-hop musicians that come to tighten their musical skills, but also serve a platform for musicians to network as well as keep the legacy of jazz music alive.

The Evolution series takes place at Creole Music and Supper Club in East Harlem. Club Manager and Director Kevin Walters stresses "this is where the music thrived during the early 1900's and music fans from all over the world are coming weekly to keep this music viable for the younger generation." Creole's diverse food menu along with drink specials are not only affordable, but offers some of the best soul and southern cuisine in New York City.

Each week, Igmar hosts the jam sessions and generally asks musicians to sign in when arrive and wait until its their turn to take the bandstand. Each song isn't your typical "standard" or "ballad." Some musicians might play Tribe's "Bonita Applebum" translated in a jazz-soul rendition or rock group Queen's "We Are Champions" in a funked-out version. The Evolution series is one of the best sessions in town because they stretch the music pallet beyond jazz. Plus, musicians can actually play instead of some of the more traditional jazz clubs in New York were they stress their brand name and charge music patons a hefty cover charge. Creole has been insturmental in bringing America's only artform in both a comfortable setting as well as back where the legends used to play and live.
