Igor Lavovski's presentation at 3rd International Conference of Biodigital Architecture & Genetics in Barcelona 2017.

In this presentation, I propose a new approach for doing an architecture, which is purely based on natural forces as Sun, Wind or Rain.

In the time of increasing population and pollution, global warming, water scarcity, wars for oil and food, more than 50 % of world energy is consumed trough building industry. Architects are taking no responsibility. Like Charlie Brown sitting in the corner and scratching their dogs.

Trough introducing of evolutionary algorithms in design process now is possible to find the fittest solutions for every new project at any world location. Analyze the climate and bring the Big Data into calculations. Now new buildings are emerging from site ground trough adaptation on its surrounding.

New Architecture is invisible for nature. EA architecture is a cure for the polluted cities.

The Result of Evolutionary Algorithm is the architecture which represents a diagram of forces not the product of architect's creative ego.

Through interaction with 4 classical elements Fire, Air, Water and Earth emerges the Tree.

The Tree symbolized the building, it is a model for demonstration of evolutionary principles in "How To Design A Tree"

One year ago we started to think about a "simple" question:

"How to increase total solar radiation on future development and at same time decrease its impact on surrounding???"

Ultimately we calculate optimized form, which then represent borders for a new project, within borders if you design your project you definitely provide optimized geometry.

"Solar tool as a new dimension in architectural design. Solar tool brings not just easy to test solar radiation/ project optimization, it converts "hard to compute" evolutionary solver in position of ubiquitous computing."

We used Voxels for filling a imaginary space.

If you use Solar Dance with really small subdivision number you could eventually test even a window shading overhang with it. Or depth of entrance. Following the logic of poly modelling, voxels can be used to determine maximum Solar Radiation on bigger subdivision number and then linearly decrease the subdivision number and increase the fittneness of results. Optimization trough Subdivision.

I really like a idea to have constant evolutionary solver in the background during a design. And at any sign of uncertainty or need for "evolver" help, you press a button. Coffee button. For that we need it in a real time. That is something we tried to accomplish in Solar Tool. Evolutionary solver as ubiquitous computing!

Also, I like idea about third screen with data visualization in process of designing a architectural project. By shifting a simple point of curve can be simultaneously tested if still in "good" boundary. Every line ,geometry, decision, is simultaneously tested for it's fittest. Boundaries can be our parameters, like sun, wind, orientations, daylight,cooling,heating,usage,traffic.... We determine them before or during design process! Performance Based Design.

This is my doctoral thesis research and at this point in my life, due increasing "Zeitdruck", also a very much status quo. Dissertation is inscribed at TUGraz under the title "Biomimicry As Design Tool For Adaptive Building Skins". Video includes also some examples from practice that is evolved from research and also new ideas for future research are in. Video is actually part of presentation presented at Institut of Building and Energy at summer 2016. So my voice and detailed explanation is missing.

Masterstudio INHABITABLE SKIN

INTRO

In the age of information, our everyday is overwhelmed with the “Big Data. How to work with this amount of information? Can we use this data to write parameters for our architectural projects? How to convert data into mathematical formulas and how to connect results of formulas into the parts of algorithms and then perform final calculations. With the goal to optimize our models? Can we build with the Big Data?

In the time where polluting and increasingly costly energy production is trigger event for wars and destruction the question arises: Is principle “Form Follows Energy” the only true solution? If it is, how to formalize right design process? Where is the link between energy and information? Between the Energy and Form?

1. FORCES

In first phase of studio project, students will learn the role of local climate and how does it inputs building shape in initial design process. They will learn how to recognize natural forces, how to write them as vectors or numbers, points or curves, and how to build an architectural project as diagram of physical forces.

Students will investigate how to improve micro climate on existing location. Trough individually developed system or trough evolutionary solvers (EA), students will evaluate produced forms with the goal to choose the fittest one. “Evolutionary algorithm In Energy Design” is optional way.

The main task for first phase in studio is to convert forces (as sun,wind,rain…) into parameters and rules which build a initial shape ready for simulation in elective course “Advanced Facade Technologies”.

2. LAYERED TRANSITION

In second phase students will develop multilayered design systems.

Layers performance, individual and/or interconnected, will be evaluated and function of layers will be defined. Question in this phase is how layers unique role (purpose) impacts the whole. Definition of layers act in building performance is design task. Students will manifest and parametrize all layers, and adjust layer orientation, position, zoning, time/spatial complexity, function and interconnection. Students will track information with goal to evaluate the performance of whole with layers modification.

At the end of second phase other systems can be also integrated in layers, as ( just imagination triggers) self-cleaning and self-shading systems for exterior oriented layers, drone transportation vs. plugged cells, cellular transportation and bio-filtration of air and water or adaptation to changing environmental demands.

Layers are essential part of our “Inhabitable Skin” project studio.To student imagination and ideas, only sky and energy consumption is limit. This part is crossed with elective course “Advanced Building Systems”.

3. PROPHECY

In third phase student will send their models into the future. The building will simulate own life cycle. During one year. User traffic frequency, agents flows, energy cost, daylight, ventilation, cooling and heating systems will be in future lived. After simulation, students will call their models back, analyze it again, optimized it and perform re-design. Re-simulation. Re-Generation. Design will learn, adapt and in best case replicate itself.

This will be done in cooperation with elective courses “Advanced Facade Technologies “and “Advanced Building Systems”.

4. WORKFLOW

In fourth phase the students will test and develop different workflows and pipelines for 2D and 3D software for their projects.

Our studio use 2D tools with connection to 3D (ArchiCad), 3D modeling tools (Rhino3D,Cinema4D,3DMax..), visual scripting languages (GH3D), surface and mesh optimization tools (ZBRUSH), procedural material authoring (Substance), composition (PSD), painting tools (Krita) and gaming engines (Unreal Engine) for real and virtual visualization.

5. JUDGMENT DAY

In fifth phase, project will be finished and presented to the jury. Different presentation techniques will be implemented, from pen and paper, model to virtual reality.

GOAL

After successfully completion of the project, students will gain a basic knowledge of energy optimization in building design process. Converting a physical forces as wind and sun into analytical methods for design objectives, understanding macro and micro climates, working with parameters and information, increasing performance of multilayered buildings, controlling big scale geometry, testing different pipelines for 3d and 2d software, testing presentation techniques, from paper to virtual and managing Big Data are the goals for this year studio project.

Architectural UnReality

Architects have always tend to present their imagination with a pen and paper or with a mouse and computer. They draw their ideas, concepts and projects in different historically defined scales. Depending on what type of understanding of emotion is expected from client, architects use big or small scales for their projects - from cityscapes to windows detail. Scale 1:1 was usually reserved for built structure.

Presentation art has also evolved over time - from ink on paper, trough paintings and collages, paper model or 3d printed structures, to renderings and advanced animations.

All this techniques have one in common - spectators secure distance. At the end, architectural presentation will be hanged on the wall, and it will trigger some intended or non-intended emotion. But its secure distance minimize interaction between project and observer to zero.

New age technology is already developed and it is called Virtual Reality. Spectator now lose his secure distance and he is transformed into the User. Now he can leave traces and freely interact and play with "unbuilt" architecture. For the first time in history, he will move a walls of architect’s ideas.

Links between built and unbuilt, real and unreal are lost. Scale 1:1 is new scaling. We build unbuilt.

New pipelines, new workflows, new paper for new pen needs to be invented, because gaming engines are coming into architectural schools. Virtual reality will be, or better say, is already, a new way of making architecture.

During a workshop we will develop a workflow from modelling software Rhinoceros3D and its parametric plugin Grasshopper3D to gaming engine Unreal Engine 4.12.

We will develop algorithms for temporary structures, baked them to geometry and import these to virtual reality. At the end, we will bring 1:1 scaled environment revived with HTC Vive and Oculus. Users will interact with our projects.

Abandoned industrial zone is our environment, our imagined location. Our playground. 15 projects from 15 students, walkable in virtual reality is our goal at the workshop.

We will go from scripting, modeling and texturing to scripting with blueprints in gaming engine, so some advanced skills of modeling are needed. However, they are not mandatory, so bring your ideas and motivation for hard work and you are in. We will help you develop your ideas.

But be careful what you wish, it could be life changing....

Auf Basis definierter Parameter findet das Programm selbstständig Lösungen, errechnet mögliche Lösungsvarianten, und kommt mittels Optimierungsschleifen zum besten Ergebnis.

Das ist vor allem für Anwendungen interessant, die ohne Simulation nicht objektiv bewertbar sind.

To je igra mašte i predvidjanja, pa ko šta pogodi!
Trajanje sagradjenog objekta je relativno kratkog vjeka, do 50 godina u urbanim sredinama. Za taj objekat parametri koji ga definišu su predvidljivi u tom kratkom roku, kretanje sunca, strujanje vjetra, broj korisnika, funkcija i scenariji prenamjene objekta, trosenje materijala, odrzavanje objekta, troskovi gradnje i razgradnje, frekvencija saobracaja itd...
Za prirodno okruzenje je svaki činioc flore i faune dobrodošao! On ne smeta, već prirodu čini. Priroda je predvidljivi krug samoodrživosti.
Arhitektura je prljava o neuredna, troši 60 % svjetske energije, topi glečere i buši ozonske rupe.

Arhitektura je slijepa. Gradi se sada. Ona misli samo danas. Za nečiji trenutni džep. Arhitekte su mali timovi što ne mogu proračunati parametre budućnosti! Ne usudjuju se.
Ali kompjuter može! On simulira godine unaprijed. Njemu to nije teško. Zadaj mu parametre, poveži sa simulacijskim softverima, za vjetar, sunce, orijentaciju, troškove, dozvoljenu visinu, żeljene funkcije, moguće scenarije razvoja grada, i on će računati. Dan, dva, sedam, mjesec.... Ti, Arhitekto, odi na more... kompjuter će to generisati rješenja!
Ne zaboravi napisati algoritam za optimizaciju, jer valjda želiš "najbolje" rješenje...
Kompjuter računa brzo, ali je strašno glup! Moraš mu pomoći povezati parametre, poslagati ih po ljestvici važnosti, šta ti je važnije, kvadratura ili učinkovitost, solarna radiacija ili broja stubišta? Kad završi sa optimizacijslim algoritmom, udari enter! Računanje počinje......

Kad se vratiš sa pauze, sa ljetovanja, kompjuter će se vratiti iz budućnost!
Kompjuter može da putuje u budućnost, ti Arhitekto ne!

"Projekat Automata" je prvo slanje podataka 50 godina u budućnost! Kad se vrate, pitaću ih kako im je bilo!
Tražiću od njih rešenje, koje prirodi neće smetati, neće je uništavati, koje će se prilagoditi okruźenju sad i budućnosti! Arhitektonsko rešenje koje je testirano 50 godiba unaprijed, rešenje proizašlo iz varijacija, mutacija i hiljadama novih generacija. Rešenje koje je evoluiralo Darvinovom metodom selekcije.
Evo, upravo prolazi kroz simuliranu okolinu i mjenja se. Adaptira se. Uči. Razvija se. Čedo moje....
