This morning, Lee Woodruff gave a powerful presentation and shared her family’s harrowing story. In 2006, her husband, ABC News Anchor Bob Woodruff, suffered a critical injury while reporting from Iraq. Lee stressed the importance of family and front-line hospital staff is in every patient’s recovery.

Participants also enjoyed speaker Rick Norling, senior fellow at IHI, discuss new methods to improve patient safety. Next, everyone moved to the lobby for the storyboard sessions to share and learn from their peers’ success.

Tomorrow, IHA will kick off the 2011 IHA Annual Meeting at the Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel in Carmel. If you missed the online registration deadline, you can still register in person. On-site registration will be available each day of the annual meeting beginning at 8 a.m.

As you know, 2011 marks IHA’s 90th anniversary and this year we’re going to celebrate! During the upcoming annual meeting, IHA and its members will come together to celebrate our mutual success over many years.
The Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel, Carmel. Each year, guests come dressed in their finest attire, mingle with their peers, and honor the evening’s award winners.
This annual event allows the IHA and its members to say thanks to the health care professionals, legal counsel, sponsors, and IHA chairmen who work to improve the health of Hoosiers every day. The banquet is a time to celebrate, reflect, and look forward to the future.

This year’s meeting features new events specifically designed for chief medical officers and hospital trustees.
On Wednesday, Oct. 26, a CMO Forum will be held from 4:30 – 7 p.m. Dr. John Sparzo, vice president of medical affairs at Hendricks Regional Health in Danville, will facilitate the forum and lead the group through 2012. The forum is free; however, interested CMOs need to take this short survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CMOForum to attend.
The second CMO event will be the following morning. Chief medical officers should plan to attend the Chief Medical Officer Breakfast & Forum featuring Steve Berkowitz, M.D. Dr. Berkowitz is the president of SMB Healthcare Consulting and will lead the group in a discussion about current issues affecting CMOs and share best practices. The forum kicks off day two of the annual meeting Thursday, Oct. 27 from 7:30-9:45 a.m.
Trustees can look forward to the Trustee Networking Session on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 8:45-9:45 a.m. The session is specifically designed for trustees to come together and share ideas, issues, best practices, and network.

As the 2011 IHA Annual Meeting approaches, it's a good time to reflect on Indiana's health care history. This year, IHA celebrates its 90th anniversary and health care has changed dramatically since IHA's founding.

Each year, at the annual meeting IHA presents the Hahn keynote speaker in honor of Albert and Grace Hahn. The Hahn family legacy serves as an example for other health care leaders across Indiana. The Hahn’s led Deaconess Hospital in Evansville during the first half of the 20th century and helped lead IHA during its early years.
After IHA’s founding in 1921, Albert Hahn headed the membership recruitment efforts and guided the development of the new organization. In 1933, Albert was named IHA’s first executive director. Together with Grace, he served in this voluntary role until 1959, while Grace continued in her role until 1963.
This year, the Indiana Hospital Association celebrates its 90th anniversary. So how did it all begin? Dr. George Keiper and some 100 physicians from across the state met in the spring of 1921 to create a state hospital assocation.
