Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Released

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, the fourth maintenance update to Ubuntu's 10.04 LTS release. This release includes updated server, desktop, alternate installation CDs and DVDs for the i386 and amd64 architectures.

The Kubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Kubuntu 10.04.4. This release includes updated images for the desktop and alternate installation CDs and DVDs for the i386 and amd64 architectures.

This is the last planned maintenance release for the 10.04 LTS series. Future security updates and bug fixes will be individually downloadable from the Ubuntu archive in the same way as before, but no further updates to installation media will be provided for 10.04 LTS. The next
LTS release, 12.04 LTS, will be released in April 2012. We recommend that users installing Ubuntu after April install the latest LTS release.

Evernote in Ubuntu AKA Nevernote

Nevernote is an open source clone of Evernote. The program, coded in Java, is able to run on Linux, Windows, and OS-X, but the primary goal is to provide a Linux client.

Yes, Evernote is a great software, especially for those people daily working on different computers and/or devices. Before Nevernote though there was no way to use the amazing software provided by Evernote Corp. on Ubuntu. Yes, actually Evernote is not supported on Ubuntu and nobody can see anything coming in the near future. its been a couple of years now since Evernote came out with still no native linux client. So, for those using the famous platform, there was no way to work without installing Wine and then Evernote on their favorite Ubuntu version. And we all know how clumsy Wine software usually works. Given the situation, I, together with many Evernote enthusiasts, waved at the coming of Nevernote with a sense of happiness and ease, finally we can share notes we produce on other operating systems and devices with our favorite Linux distro.

I have to admit I’m not completely happy with Nevernote. Nevernote is coded with Java and that means it’s not that well integrated with GTK. The software feels heavy as a result and I usually avoid java based software. But, this is an app I use and on newer computers you wont feel the heaviness of Nevernote.

While it would be great to develop an Evernote clone for Ubuntu, Nevernote has still wide margins for improvement. Just to name one, we all hope to see support for Ink (a feature of Evernote that allows you to share handwritten notes) coming soon.

Nevernote (recently renamed to NixNote) comes in .deb packages for both 32 bit and 64 bit systems, available on the developer’s website, and it can be installed by right clicking the downloaded DEB file and installing.

If you use Evernote or would like to give it a try, we definitely recommend it as... this is the only Evernote type software on Ubuntu that can sync with your Evernote account.

Ubuntu Sound Theme Update

Canonical is working on a new sound theme for Ubuntu and the hope is to make it into the next Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. They have posted four sample login sounds and ask for your input. Which do you like the best? Why? Which sound will stand the test of time? Which sound will you not get tired of after logging into your computer 3 months later?

Netflix on Linux Contest

Recently in Ubuntu news, there has been chatter that Netflix has absolutely no plans to support the linux community. There are several alternative methods for watching Netflix on linux distros... the easiest method is to run Windows XP in Virtual Box and then watch Netflix that way. There are a few problems with this. First, you'll need a fast enough computer to run XP virtually. Second, you would need a valid license to run XP. Most of us dont want to go through these hoops anymore.

Linux users WANT a native method to watch Netflix. Chrome OS and Android users (both linux spinoffs) can watch Netflix. Even Mac users are technically running a unix based system and can watch Netflix.

We, the linux community, want to watch Netflix on our personal computers! We have decided to start a Netflix on linux contest. It will run until the end of March 2012. This gives you a month and a half to figure it out.

There are DRM issues involved so a legal way to watch Netflix is desired.

We have a few rules for the contest. The winner must provide an easily reproducible legal method for getting Netflix working natively on any popular linux distribution, preferably Ubuntu linux. Simple terminal command instructions that any linux user can use. Simply put, if it is not simple enough for the average linux user to do across multiple distros, it wont count.

Ive recently started using Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity exclusively now and find it to be very solid and stable. Yes, it take a bit getting used to but the more you give it a try the more it all makes sense and is easier than you might think.

Sunday Morning Comics on Ubuntu

As a long time user of Ubuntu, Ive seen some great applications come and go. Over a year ago we did an article about Buoh Comics Reader which used to be in the Ubuntu software repository. The program went unmaintained and so it was eventually dropped by Ubuntu. Doing a little research we found out someone picked up the program and began to maintain it again, but only for as short time.

This great little app is slowly slipping away.

There are a number of reasons, one of the most obvious could be how easy it is to go to a website and read your favorite comic strip. The nice part about the Buoh Comic app is that you can get all of your comics in one place, you wont have to go to 5 different websites to scout for your favorite comics. Another reason this app goes unmaintained could be the difficulty in scraping the websites hosting the comics. Ive looked into it a bit and found some of the comic sites scrambling their comic links so its not very easy to pull the daily pages anymore. If you want to take up the challenge and figure out the comic links and update this app, it shouldnt be too difficult. Tricky Im sure, but not impossible.

The Buoh Comics Reader shows daily comics to the ones that still works. The comic database in this app is not updated anymore so some of the links are no longer working. Ziggy, one of my favorite comics does not show up in this app anymore. There are still several that DO work so if you are a newspaper comics fan or want to relive some of that old nostalgia when you used to read the funnies, give this app a try. This app works great in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

Install Wunderlist Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric

Wunderlist is a great to-do application that is cross platform. For previous Ubuntu users using 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 Wunderlist can be found in the Ubuntu Software Center. For 11.10 Oneiric users (64 bit), Wunderlist dropped the ball on us. Its been 4 months now without Ubuntu support for Oneiric users (my guess is that they are busy on a newer app with more features).

There is a way to install Wunderlist in 11.10 - 64 bit, but you'll have to follow the terminal commands below. Its not too difficult if you go slow and follow along. Open a new Terminal and copy and paste the codes into the terminal and press ENTER after each one.

Ubuntu 12.04 Development update

Development Update

Ubuntu 12.04 is shaping up nicely. Last week Alpha 2 got released, which means you should be testing by now. Next week we will hit Feature Freeze, by which time we “stop introducing new features, packages, and APIs, and concentrate on fixing bugs in the development release”. This also means that new upstream versions (if they not part of on the release team’s list of exceptions or pure bug fix releases) will need to get a freeze exception from the release team. This is also a reason why Daniel Holbach called for a “Sponsorship Friday”, so the queue of uploads which need code review is emptied again.

Matt Fischer wrote an interesting article about how to write a LightDM greeter. The post is really well done, explaining how LightDM works internally and how to get the greeter done easily.

We are excited to let you know about the Ubuntu Global Jam, an event where Ubuntu LoCo Teams around the world meet, have fun and together make Ubuntu better. We had a number of folks getting involved last week: Daniel d’Andrada, Nicolas Bonnefon, Kiall Mac Innes and Anton Gladky.

Spotlight: Kubuntu, alive and kicking

Benjamin Kerensa and Daniel Holbach briefly interviewed some of the Kubuntu developers to get an idea where things stand with Kubuntu.

The announcement that Canonical employee Jonathan Riddell would soon focus on goals other than Kubuntu maintenance has been widely been discussed in the media, so first we asked the team, if they would like to add anything to these discussions which had been missed. Jonathan Riddell started out by saying that “pulling the plug” as many headlines have put it was too harsh and that Kubuntu will get the community support it always has done. Also he pointed out that Kubuntu did pleasingly well during 11.10 when he also wasn’t working on it. We asked if the lack of you being involved full time would have any noticeable impact. Jonathan responded and said that he does community management, so nudges people towards tasks that they are capable of, and fills in areas of Kubuntu that are sometimes neglected, such as ISO testing and that these tasks will have been done by others.

As many readers probably don’t know how Kubuntu is put together, we asked how Kubuntu development has worked up until now. Rohan Garg gave us an overview: Basically, the Kubuntu team deals with the KDE and Qt packages in the Ubuntu archive, so whenever a new release is about to be made the team gets the source tarballs a couple of days before release and the team of “ Kubuntu ninjas” get cracking. They build, patch, and see to it that everything works as expected before release day, reporting any build issues upstream and getting tarballs respun is part and parcel of the job. Sometimes it happens that everyone is busy which causes delays in the release. Once the Kubuntu release is out, packages are usually backported into the Ubuntu backports repositories for the current stable release. The Kubuntu ninjas are also responsible for other KDE packages such as Amarok which are not part of the standard KDE release and as Jonathan Riddell pointed out that there is Qt and related bits too and added “with luck we can do some feature development (which is mostly specced out at UDS)”.

Testing is important as well. Jonathan mentioned ISO testing and Philip Muškovac explained that before stable release updates are pushed out, testing is done through public PPAs. Rohan and Philip went on and described how most of Kubuntu’s bug work is being done upstream: KDE bugs are directly reported in the KDE bug tracker, as KDE applications have their own bug/crash handling framework. Philip added that it would be great to have more contributions to bugs in Launchpad, so they can be forwarded to Upstream in a more timely fashion

Next we asked what’s in the cards for Kubuntu 12.04. Philip explained that the introduction of KDE 4.8 took a lot of time and that he is still supporting the Oxygen theme for GTK3. Rohan mentioned that a new IM client is being packaged right now, using the Telepathy framework. The packaging is almost done and testing will go on for a week before they enter the archive. Also was Rohan proud to admit that he is going to apply for Kubuntu upload rights!

It is interesting to note that Philip and Rohan both mentioned that the withdrawal of “official support” would actually make the development of Kubuntu easier: up until now all packages for the Kubuntu CDs had to be in the main repository, which requires a thorough investigation of the code. From now on Kubuntu bits could come from main and universe.

It is absolutely possible to contribute to Kubuntu and the team has enough tasks lined up, so you can help out. If it is triage of bugs, ISO testing, documentation or packaging: everyone is welcome to contribute and get involved. Jonathan mentioned that it is important that you are a “motivated self starter”, but that the fine people in #kubuntu-devel can help you out if you get stuck. The Kubuntu wiki page has more details.

Follow the instructions in the Getting Set Up article. A few simple commands, a registration at Launchpad and you should have all the tools you need, and you’re ready to go.
Check out our instructions for how to fix a bug in Ubuntu, they come with small examples that make it easier to visualise what exactly you need to do.

Find something to work on

Pick a bitesize bug. These are the bugs we think should be easy to fix. Another option is to help out in one of our initiatives.

Install Canon Printer for Ubuntu Linux

Canon is well known for their large printer selection. Unfortunately Canon has, up until this point, only provided printer drivers for Windows and Mac computers. Canon did release some printer drivers for linux, but the majority of Canon printer owners were out of luck.

About a year ago my dad bought a new computer at Fry's electronics store and along with the computer came a free Canon ip2600 printer. It was difficult to say the least to get the printer working in Ubuntu 10.10. Luckily Canon provided 32 bit drivers after some time, and then someone converted this to work on 64 bit systems as well.

Ubuntu 11.10 DOES see and attempt to install the Canon printer of mine, although trying to print a domcument does nothing. Thankfully, there is now a PPA available for many many commonly used Canon printers.

To install these Canon printer driver for Ubuntu you need to add the PPA below in your Ubuntu system. Open a "terminal" window and copy and paste these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon
sudo apt-get update

Make sure to disconnect the Canon printer from your computer first.

Now copy and paste your appropriate install command based on your printer:

Opera TV

From the looks of it, Ubuntu TV already has some stiff competition. Its called "Opera TV" and from the outset it looks like it will do far more than what Ubuntu TV could do. While Ubuntu TV is going for the "everything video" angle focusing on showing video and showing it well, Opera TV is planning to have all of its already user created apps, widgets and extensions available in its new software built into a TV. This could have far more uses than Ubuntu TV and appear to a wider audience as well. Who wouldnt want to have all these apps right on their television? No longer will you be glued to your computer doing Facebook or Google Plus, you can just sit in front of the TV all day :)

Another benefit for Opera app developers is that they could get paid for their apps, which has not yet been mentioned in any plans for Ubuntu TV.

The project appears still in its infancy and could go head to head with Ubuntu TV in terms of courting potential TV manufacturers, developers, and more. What do you think about Opera TV versus Ubuntu TV? Totally different beasts, one in the same basically, or complimenting each other?

GnomeBaker Simple CD DVD Burning

Brasero works pretty good, K3B works great, but if those give you any problems and you just want a nice simple and stable CD and DVD burning app, give GnomeBaker a try.

GnomeBaker is really straight forward. Data DVD, Data CD and Audio CD are all really easy to do. You can even copy discs, erase RW discs and burn image files.

Installation is easy. Open up the Ubuntu Software Center and search for GnomeBaker and install it. There are some rumors that it has been dropped in Oneiric Ocelot 11.10 and if that is the case you will have to install it via the terminal.

Open a terminal window and type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnomebaker/stable

That will install the needed repository. Now to update and install GnomeBaker, paste this in the terminal...

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnomebaker

Agave Color Scheme Designer

Agave is a very simple application for the GNOME desktop that allows you to generate a variety of colorschemes from a single starting color. It is free software licensed under the open-source GPL License.

Ok folks. We all know that people belonging to our tribe, the tribe of nerds, are not famous for their taste and ability to match colors. Linux conventions are filled with people dressed in very horrible color combinations. Even when it comes to choosing the right color scheme for a website, nerds are not exactly the best specimen around and that’s why for every website we make, it is better to get the help of a professional “color picker”. But us nerds are good at computing and have tried to exploit the formula for perfect color matching. They made an algorithm out of it and put it inside Agave, a software that will quickly become your best friend, if you mind about looking decent. Given any color Agave is able to pick up the perfect match, which will let you save time, money and honor while picking up your clothes or while painting the walls of your room. Agave features also the possibility to obtain the hex code for each color, so that you will simply have to copy-paste it in your code to have a decent looking website. Agave also offers some lists of web-safe colors, giving you the opportunity to pick up from a list of colors that won’t give your readers headaches or vomit.

Agave is the best friend for people like me, people that constantly fail at picking up decent color combinations. Believe it or not, Agave totally changed the way I present my work, making it look better designed overall.

Agave comes under the terms of GPL and it can be freely modified and redistributed.

Install it simply by searching for it in the Ubuntu Software Center or by typing “sudo apt-get install agave” in your favorite terminal.

DEVELOPER TRACK: Don Marti's presentation on “Advanced Web Content Management with Revision Control” at 11:30 in the Carmel room kicks off Sunday's Developer Track. Other talks on this track include Matt Harrison's “It's All Good: Martha Stewart, Python and Decorators” at 1:30 p.m. in Carmel, and Josh Berkus speaks on “Firehose Engineering” at 3 p.m. in Carmel.

OSSIE TRACK: Sebastian Dziallas leads a workshop on “POSSE Intensive” at 11:30 in the BelAir room.

Summoning Wars Diablo 3 Style Game

Summoning Wars is an open source role-playing game, featuring both a single-player and a multiplayer mode for 2 to 8 players. Summoning Wars is free software and is released under GPL. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

We have got a feeling. The fantasy RPG genre will never die. One day, we will be 70 and we will still be looking at the huge and constantly updated list of fantasy RPG available for our platform. So, why bother? We bother because Summoning Wars, the game we introduce today, has the potential to become a very good game, if it is not already. Thanks to its developers, who have done a really good job, offering a very immersive environment, achieved by good scripts both for music and dialogues. The beef, sad to say, is the same of many famous RPG we had the chance to play on our Linux machines. It doesn’t fall far from titles like Neverwinter Nights and well, why bother to differ when the formula is well tested and still appreciated by thousands of players? While the developers of Summoning Wars cannot surely afford expensive textures and scenarios like the big firms of software developing, they surely did a great job.

The game, which still feels slightly buggy and with many easy-to-fix things that we are sure they will fix in the next release, offers a very enjoyable game experience and hey, did I forget to mention that it also supports multiplayer?

As we said before, Summoning Wars comes under the terms of GPL, which means that, if you feel so, you can modify and redistribute the game.

The game can be downloaded and installed from the website of the developer. Since I can be terrible at compiling from source, I was never able to get the game working in Ubuntu using the linux source code that is available. The Readme file calls for several items to be installed on Ubuntu systems before compiling. All seems to go well, until another program which needs installing didnt work out so easy. There was a PPA made for that program over a year ago (before Ubuntu 11.10) and the PPA doesnt work on the newest version of Ubuntu. Maybe it will work fine for 10.xx versions.

In any event, we did get Summoning Wars working fine in a round about way. We downloaded the EXE of the game and installed it fine using PlayOnLinux by selecting "install a non listed item", and installed the "vcrun2010" library before installing the EXE in PlayOnLinux. Depending on your video card, your mileage may vary.

Marlin File Manager

Marlin is a lightweight and Elementary file manager distributed under the terms of GPL license and fully integrated with the GNOME environment.

As the guys of Marlin like to put it, in the crowded sea this file browser and manager is the sexiest one. And it is really sexy, as it is lightweight and able to flawlessly run on most machines. Basic and essential in its features, Marlin could play the role of the outsider in a market which has become crowded with fat guys which make our old machines cry. Are you looking for something slim and easy going? Then give Marlin a try. The file browser, for its minimal approach, has been the choice of Elementary OS, a distribution focused on giving basic and light features to not-so-technical-savvy users.

The interface could seem kind of minimal to the ones used to the heavyweight Nautilus. Yet it does its job pretty well. The interface is divided into a left panel that provides fast access to bookmarks and common places, and the right window which offers the file browser. The guys behind Marlin have been able to stuff all the necessary features of a file manager in this sleek interface and you can easily access infos like name, size and owner of the file by the convenient status bar located at the bottom of the window.

I love Marlin, and I try to use it even on machines that can bear the heavy load of Nautilus, as I am a very far of sleek things and I didn’t like much the recent trend of mainstream file browser, as they have become something as heavy as a 3D video game. If you zoom into the photo above, you'll see a neat feature you wont find elsewhere and thats the ability to "highlight" a file with a specific color. Marlin can also handle Ubuntu One and Dropbox plugins making this one of the best and lightest file managers around.

Marlin comes under the terms of GPL and can be easily downloaded and installed from the Ubuntu Software Center. If not, open a terminal window and type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:marlin-devs/marlin-daily

and then...

A Simple Backup Strategy For Laptop Computers

No matter whether you travel with your laptop or not, a successful backup strategy means having your files backed up in more than one place. You'll probably start with an external hard drive stored in your home, maybe a USB thumb drive that you carry around with you, and then back up to the cloud in addition to these areas. This ensures that, no matter what the situation, at least one of your backups will survive.

External Hard Drive

The first part of your backup strategy should be an external hard drive. Make sure it's as big (though preferably larger) as your laptop's hard drive, and transfer everything from your computer to the external drive regularly. To make things easier, install an application like Déjà Dup Backup Tool that'll regularly update your backup whenever you modify or create new files.

Put your external hard drive in an easy-to-reach location so that you remember to connect it to your laptop whenever you're at home. If not, you might forget to back it up for a couple of weeks and lose that all-important document you'd been working on for months! You may even want to buy a second external hard drive and store it in a different location to be extra safe. USB drives have come down in price and you can find 64GB USB drive for around $50 USD now.

Online Backup Services

There are a huge range of online backup services available to choose from, starting at FREE for 5GB storage at our favorite online backup - Ubuntu One: https://one.ubuntu.com/ Ubuntu One offers another 20GB of extra storage for a very reasonable $30 per year (or $2.99 a month). For extra security in your backup strategy, you may even want to sign up to more than one service. Dropbox is another decent alternative since it offers easy integration with the Nautilus file manager. All services work differently, but most have software that'll automatically check for new or modified files within the folders you specify. Once they're up and running, these backup tools really are set and forget!

Make sure to test any online backup service regularly. Even if you have no need to yet, you need to make sure it's easy to recover your files to your computer. This will check both the recovery process of the service you're signed up to, as well as the fact that the backup has actually worked!

There are a few drawbacks of online backup services, most notably the fact that they can use a lot of bandwidth to upload all of your files to their services. The initial backup can also take quite a few weeks to complete (depending on your hard drive size) and the software may use a significant chunk of processing power while it completes. Until you're sure everything's backed up online, make sure you have an alternative backup strategy in place, too.
