HTC Radar A Top Selling Phone 2 Months and Counting

In a post intended to show that the Iphone is still dominating the smartphone market WMP pointed out that it also shows TMobiles HTC Radar being a top selling phone two months in a row. The phone ranked as the #3 best sellar on Tmobile is evidence that Microsofts strategy of getting volume through mid specked handsets before launching the higher end ones may be working.

Nokia = Most Trusted Brand In India

Many people here in the United States have failed to see why Nokia's adoption of the WP7 platform, for their smartphones, is such a big deal. This interesting article from the Economic Times points out that Nokia is the single most trusted brand in India. The survey was done not exclusively to phones or even electronics but of all brands and placed Nokia ahead of even TATA (considered Indias most beloved company). India has one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world and will soon surpass Chinas as the most populated country in the world. It starts to become clear why Nokia may indeed be the silver bullet WP7 has been waiting for.

Lumia 900 Launched

As exciting as the device is it came as little suprise that Nokia launched the Lumia 900 at CES this week. The device has a 4.3" screen is LTE enabled and exclusive to AT&T. At launch it will come in cyan and black but more colors will be released in the future. In addition to the exclusive Nokia Lumia apps perhaps the most differentiating feature of the phone is the 8mp Carl Ziess rear camera that with wider lenses giving the phone better up close picture capabilities in addition to a stellar front facing camera.

HTC Titan II Confirmed

This phone has not been the best kept secret but HTC today announced the release of the Titan II which will be available on AT&T. The massive 4.3" WVGA screen is accompanied by has become the standard second generation specs of WP7 phones with a 1.5GHZ processor, 512 MB of Ram and 16 GB Flash memory. In addition to being 4g LTE ready the big improvement on this phone is the impressive 16 MP camera which is also accompanied by a 1.3 MP front facing camera.

Additionaly HTC's Peter Chou said the “Titan II is packed with image technology”.

The camera will feature a fast wide-angle lens (f2.6, 28mm), autofocus, and dual LED flash, red eye reduction, image stabilization, a panorama mode for landscapes, and a burst shot mode.

This ad has been airing for about two months now showing of the social features of the WP7 platform. I had initially resisted including it on the site since I question it's effectiveness but It does make people chuckle.

Lumia 900 Confirmed by NYT

In an interesting article titled, "Microsoft Defying Image Has Gem in Windows Phone," New York Times reporter Nick Wingfield confirms what Tech bloggers have been saying for a while that Nokia is about to release a Lumia 900 device which will be LTE enabled and larger than the Lumia 800. The article calls the device a, "sleek aluminum," phone which contradicts earlier reports. Either way the wait to see will not be long since Wingfield confirmed that it will be released tomorrow at CES.

LTE Enabled Radiant To Launch on AT&T

In what looks like a fairly standard HTC design the HTC Radiant will be launching at AT&T giving the US a 4g LTE enabled large screen WP7 device. The device has been compared to the TITAN as a result of its similar size but features LTE technology as well as an updated front facing camera and a slightly modified body.

The device will also launch on Telstra Australia and specs have not been released.

Microsoft + Nokia = 200 Million Dollar US Launch

Microsoft and Nokia will be teaming up to relaunch WP7 to the US to the tune of 200 million dollars. The money surprisingly is coming more heavily from Nokia than from Microsoft with AT@T but may be eclipsed by Microsoft in total spending. Samsung and other partners will also be part of this push as they team up to sell significantly more Windows Phone 7's in the first half of 2011.

The Most significant part of the plans in getting Windows Phone 7 to consumers is FINALLY using incentives to sell the phones. With somewhere in the range of $10-15 per handset sold for some handsets. This will perhaps be the biggest factor in increasing sales as WP7 enthusiasts have been pointing out for nearly a year the strong bias against WP7 in retails stores.

Nokia Lumia 710's Start Shoing Up at TMobile

The Lumia 710 doesn't launch until Jan 11 but stores are already starting to receive them in their inventory. It will be interesting to see how they sell b/c while this is not part of their, "shock and awe" campaign being launched with the Nokia ace device and Lumia 800 it is Nokias first WP7 phone in the US and starts to expand Tmobiles WP7 offerings. At launch they will be available in Black and White Only

LG Fantasy Leaked

A new LG device codenamed Fantasy and sporting a Windows Phone 7.5 specified build has been leaked to several websites with a massive 4.0 screen. It is rumored to have a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera and a rear 5.0 megapixel camera. The phone was intended for developers and after LG's inconsistent start with Windows Phone it is is unknown if the phone will be released soon or not.

Game Review: Square Off

Originally launched as a Xbox Live indy game Square Off has become one of the most popular independent WP7 games after porting over to Windows Phone earlier this year.

In what is perhaps the most addicting game after Wordament and Angry Birds Square Off has mastered the true arcade game feeling. Game graphics are a quirky and designed to appear as if hand drawn. Game play is smooth as you fly around killing aliens and is the closest feeling to having dual joysticks at an arcade that I have experienced on a mobile device. Square Off has also balanced ease of initial play with a high enough level of challenge that anyone can pick up the game and play yet not get bored for a long time.

My only complaint is that there are only 7 stages. While each stage does have multiple levels I really would like more variation in stages.

The game is available for free with ads or for 1.29 without.

Brandon Foy's Fan Ad = Job at Microsoft

In what one publication is calling a, "a Cinderella tale in the digital age," Brandon Foy, a student at Full Sail University, landed a job at Microsoft after his fan ad of WP7 went viral.

Saying he did not expect the ad to become so popular he was quickly invited by Microsoft to make a second ad for the Mix 11 event. Microsoft promised if the ad got 200,000 hits in time they would air it nationally. While the ad fell short only reaching 180,000 it still created enough buzz for Microsoft to recruit Foy.

Lumia 800 Coming to The US Soon

Images were leaked of the FCC teardown of Nokias Lumia 800. While this does not guarantee a US landing soon it certainly points towards one. The evidence suggests that the phone will likely be heading to ATT Microsofts premier partner. Rumors were going around that Tmobile would land the phone first to match the Lumia 710 coming in January but without 1700 MHZ capabilities that seems unlikely.

Microsoft & Nokia Might Buy RIM?

The Wall Street Journal published an article this week in which they said that Microsoft and Nokia have had talks over the idea of buying RIM the company that makes Blackberrys.

While there is no evidence that any serious offers were made it shows just how much RIM is struggling and how important the success of the Windows Phone platform is to both Nokia and Microsoft.

While it probably would not be worth the purchase unless they could get it at a very low price the security features of RIM couples with Microsoft and Blackberries business features could make them the defacto phones of enterprise.
