Presently, the Sinhalese population has been reported to have been reduced to zero in the whole of northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Not only that, the dictate of the organization directed towards the Muslim population in the region ensured cent percent cleansing of Muslim population from Jaffna in 1991. Since then, more than 100,000 northern Muslims have been living in refugee camps. Recently, LTTE auxiliary Thamil Eela Meetpu Padai (Tamil Eelam Salvage Force) ordered the Muslims to vacate the Muthur region and shift to refugee camps. The curious logic given here was ‘to make the Muslims understand the plight of Tamils living in refugee camps’. Designed to bring ‘ethnic purity’ in ‘Eelam’, the purported killing and forced exodus of non-Tamilians has striking resemblance to the extermination of the Jewish and Gypsy population perpetrated by the Nazi Germany. That ‘homogeneity’ seeks to add greater weight to the LTTE’s hegemony, irrespective of the cost mankind has to pay.

You must’ve visited Japan for anything but autumn! When the hot and humid summers give way to cool and pleasant days, the whole of Japan looks like a scene from a colourful painting. Especially the Fukushima Prefecture, known for its parks, which is set ablaze with the fiery hues of autumn that inundate this region of Honshu Island. One such is the Ryozen Park which houses Mount Ryozen that looks over the Pacifi c Ocean and observes the Zao and Azuma-Adatara Mountain Ranges from a distance. Particularly popular in the fall season, when the multicoloured autumn flora waxes in a crescendo of vibrant colours... Just follow the sun! The Arab states formally accepted this proposal in 2002, as the Palestinians had, long before. Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has made it clear that though this solution is not Hezbollah’s preference, they will not disrupt it. Iran’s “supreme leader” Ayatollah Khamenei recently reaffirmed that Iran, too, supports this settlement. Hamas has indicated clearly that it is prepared to negotiate for a settlement on these terms as well. The United States and Israel continue to block this political settlement, as they have done for 30 years, with brief and inconsequential exceptions. Denial may be preferred at home, but the victims do not enjoy that luxury. US-Israeli rejectionism is not only in words, but more important, in actions. With decisive US backing, Israel has been formalizing its program of annexation, dismemberment of shrinking Palestinian territories and imprisonment of what remains by taking over the Jordan Valley – the “convergence” program that is, astonishingly, called “courageous withdrawal” in the United States. As a consequence, the Palestinians are facing national destruction.

HDFC Standard Life Insurance

When it came to the Indian insurance market, there was a singular government Goliath that loomed large over all the Davids, namely LIC. Challenging its hegemony was surely an insurmountable mission, largely thankless and almost unattainable. But when Standard Life chose to join hands with HDFC, it gave rise to a force that sparred for the top spot with the legendary LIC itself. But this proved to be no mean task, for it required the happy union of quality and innovative products, not to forget working out that most critical of all elements... the price tag! HDFC Standard Life constantly sought out new ways to cement customer satisfaction by offering products which were, on the innovative forefront, tailored! HDFC Standard radically introduced schemes like Endowment Assurance Plans, Money Back Plans which, unlike other insurance firms’ standard offerings, could be specifically altered to satisfy individual coverage whims and fancies. India had never seen such flexible plans before, and HDFC rewrote the rules for others to follow. Even HDFC’s usage of technology, in the form of the FileNet ECM platform (a system which aided decision-making visà-vis customer’s needs and requirements) was a path breaking strategy never utilised before my insurance companies. Today, various competitors have followed suit and cut down the initial lead; but surely, the prize for innovative sincerity goes to HDFC Standard.

The new lady killer! :: IIPM Publication

Indeed, one man’s elixir is another man’s poison! With Zee Television marking its entry into the top 10 prime time shows (between 9 pm to 10 pm), the story has not been so amusing for other media giants – Star Plus and Sony. According to TAM media research, Zee TV today commands leadership over eight shows among the top 25 prime time shows, while Star TV’s share in the top 25 has been merrily reduced from 18 to just 16! And needless to add, this erosion can be attributed to Zee’s latest initiatives. Another happy tale for Subhash Chandra is told by the female audience attracted to the top two shows on Zee and Star. While the two top Zee soaps Kasamh Se and Saath Phere on Zee command 55% and 48% female audience, the top two shows on Star Plus, (Kyunki...and Kahani....) deal with only 32% and 33% female audiences. To add insult to injury, of late, Zee TV has also increased its spending on promotions, which according to analysts, amounts to nothing less than 50% over last year’s expenditure. These deals interestingly include pacts with other media groups. Conclusively, Zee’s latest advancement only warns other media giants to pull up their ‘show’, ‘soap’ & ‘sport’ socks!

Que: The first big thing you did when you became CEO was throw a billion dollars into research and development. That was a fairly attention-getting growth bet.

Ans: I put a stake in the ground about products, innovation research and development technology because there we could lean into an existing infrastructure that was decent, but needed to get out of the basement. This was the area where even small things would have an immediate impact. We put more than 100 million bucks into renovating our research center in upstate New York. We had already started a tech center in India, but we added new ones in China and Germany and I made the businesses themselves spend more in research and development. And we started getting a flow of technology.

Lafarge cementing relations with India (IIPM Publication)

Paris-based Lafarge Group has announced its expansion plans in India with an investment of Rs.7 billion through its subsidiary, Lafarge India Pvt Ltd. With this investment, the company expects to increase the cement production capacity of its Chhattisgarh unit from present 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 3.5 mtpa. At pre sent , Lafarge has a total production capacity of 5 mtpa from its three manufacturing plants in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

Indian insurance industry (IIPM Publication)

The survey threw up extremely interesting insights into the Indian insurance industry, a critical one being that none of the companies could actually pride themselves on a satisfied customer base. The Indian economy is zooming ahead at a breath-taking GDP growth rate of 8%, and is expected to China by 2025, according to a Goldman Sachs forecast. With the purchasing power of the Indian masses shooting northwards, there is nothing but a clear yes to the question on whether the insurance biggies can make it a time worthwhile in the Indian sub-continent. The insurance sector in India had its roots in the very basic and healthy ‘free market economics’.

In the usual style of the Middle East, disappointed Sunni leaders, unhappy with the constitution, now threaten violence. But federalism is not the reason why Sunni supremacists and Islamists launch deadly attacks. Their opposition is more elemental: they do not accept the principle of democratic majority rule. Instead, they seek to restore Sunni minority rule. For the Islamists, all Shias deserve death anyway, as apostates.
