A bright new start, filled will little adventures and hopes for the future.

In the case of our little ones - you can see that there is a captive audience on the little picnic table for a series of shows where our little ones show off their talent to their "little brothers and sisters". I was honored to be a part of it and hearing the little "bumblebee" songs with actions being belted out by our two little girls. One of those little girls is shown above even with her hand outstretched as she was singing away :)

And the most precious thing of all, is that this was not a staged event, but just a simple morning where the children decided they wanted to put on a show for each other and so excited about the new little babies that have joined their family in the past few months.

It has been such a blessing to be a part of Ikhaya and to see how these little ones grow more in confidence and knowing that they are loved to boost them forward in their lives.

Thank you to everyone who supports Ikhaya...it really means a lot, especially with the house getting filled so quickly. Thank you for trusting with us as we walked this road last year when God put it on our hearts to expand the home to double the capacity. Within days of getting the new staff on board, the house was filled so quickly with the needs of these little children who have endured such hardship at such a young age.

So, I hope this little insight into the lives of our children at Ikhaya has given you a glimpse of what your continued support allows us to give these little ones.

Starting with a new song for the new year!! :)

God bless and monkey hugs from our babies!

Lynn (Volunteer at Ikhaya)

Precious 'Now' Moments

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RSMv4vHGFWM/ToDJr3dVkzI/AAAAAAAAAPA/BAc37YJAXKM/s400/Fenello.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656742887435899698" />
So this cute little baby got me thinking today....

She is the most cuddly baby I have ever met :) When she goes into your arms, it's like she belongs there and she lies her little head on your chest as if she'd rather be no where else.
She is sweet natured and hardly ever cries...(At least in the short time that I have gotten to spend with her).

Now she is one that really melts my heart. She sat so nicely and quietly in my lap while I was doing some other things and she layed there...looked up every once in a while and played with the buttons on my shirt....then I got her to sit nicely and quietly beside me as I was looking into other things.

After a while...I heard a small silent whimper. Not really a cry, but a small little one of wanting some of my attention...so I turned on some disney music took her in my arms and layed down with her a little bit. Her cute little chubby hands held on tight to the outside of my arms and she lay her head on my chest.

I lay there thinking...this is a "Now" moment. These are the moments that so many of us might miss if we don't take the opportunity to see what is before us right in this instance. This little girl with her sweet nature, just captured my heart. I could feel her little heart beat next to mine and I thought to myself "How many times has she ever been held like this?" and I prayed for her...that Jesus would bless her and hold her and let her know just how special and loved she really is.

Tears slipped down my cheeks, because I just still cannot fathom that this little one was an orphan and didn't have her mommy to hold her like this every day of her life. That this little one was teaching me about what it means to be grateful for the love that I receive every day of my life and that God, even in the most unforseen circumstances is there. With us. Holding us lightly against His chest. Telling us that everything is going to be ok and that He loves us.
By Lynn Son Kee

Promotions for our toddlers

Today was a VERY exciting day for the iKhaya family! 3 of our toddlers have been sleeping in cots but showing signs that they are ready to 'transition' into a bed! So! After Vincent renovated and built more bunkbeds we took the opportunity to promote them! (into the big girl and big boys' room!)

Our smallest boy was a little unsure so Danni, our volunteer, made a fun game with all of them and 'lured' him into his bed. Nap time was exciting today and NO TEARS , just shrieks of laughter and they dove into their 'big people' beds. Even the staff watched in wonder and with tears in their eyes. Our Nursery has some cots awaiting more babies for mid October when we open our doors to double our number of babies. Exciting times ahead!!!

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px;
Hello,

I want to take the time to describe what each day looks like, here at Ikhaya, to give everyone a better picture of how it works here. This past week has been a busy, full week. Monday morning I woke up a little before 7:00am, that gives me plenty of time to get dress, eat breakfast, and have a little quite time to myself. Then I head to Ikhaya at 8:00. Its just a short walk from the volunteer house . Ikhaya is located on the chucrh property, It is maybe six or so acres, which is all fenced off with a high electric fence, and steel gate at the entrance ( break ins, and theft is really bad here in south Africa ).The whole property sit on somewhat of a hill,so you have a pretty good view of rolling hills in the distance, and you can see the lights for the city at night. A couple from the church and their daughter live in a house on the property also, they are a really sweet family. So now back to Ihkaya at 8:00.....the three older kids are already gone to school, so it is the youngest (1yr), then(2yr), then(2yr), and then(3yr) that are about to eat their breakfast when I get there. There is also one staff on shift, all the staff are Zulu women, they also speak English, but it can be hard to understand sometimes. So I just hangout with the kids for a while, talk to them, play in the play room, things like that. Then Wendy gets there (she runs the orphanage) and we go over whats happening in the week, then I set the kids up in the play room to play “ nicely” by themselves, and I go to restock for the week. We keep all the food and supplies locked away in cabinets, ( the staff come from poor homes, and we don't want to make it a temptation for them ). I check the kitchen and see what their out of, then when I refill it I write down what I refilled, it is very organized here, which is a good thing, it helps with keeping everything on budget. Then I check the bathrooms and put out more wipes, baby powder, and nappies (diapers), which with two kids in nappies full time and two more(potty training) half the time, they go thru a lot. Then I must check the cleaning supplies, and you can only imagine the washing powder they go thru with seven kids...and we have to hang the all clothes to dry. So while I'm restocking I'm also looking at what we are running out of, so I make a grocery list each monday as I'm restocking and email to a lady that picks up groceries for Ikhaya. I have about till 12:00 to get all this done, which is usually plenty of time even with the kids interrupting every five minutes. At 12:30 is when the kids get out of school so I get in the car and go to pick them up. They go to a christian school in Empageni ( every time I get better at driving the stick shift and more at easy on the left side of the road).when I get them from their class its a fine line between fun and frustrating. They must carry their own bags and go to the car and get buckled in. If they don't want to do this for some reason, you can't just spank them, and since I'm kind of new, the kids and I are learning what kind of authority I have. But it has been good so far. I try to keep the atmosphere positive and be firm at the same time. But I absolutely love drive the kid home, and them telling all about there day. When we get back they must carry their bags in and eat lunch and take nap( by this time the small children are in bed). I empty there bag and check to see if they have any notes from the teacher. By the time this is done it about 1:00, and all the kids are in their bed ( or are suppose to be:) , So I head back to my house and lunch. We have a new volunteer, Danielle who works the afternoon shift, ( she does like to cook so I've been having fun doing a lot of the cooking for both of us), when the kids get put at about 3:00 and after they have a snack, its bath time, starting with the youngest and working to the oldest. That is a huge job, but fun:) after bath they are allowed to watch one video.....keeps them from getting to dirty, till supper, then bed. So that a basics Monday, so times we have to go early to town to go to the post office, dump, or pick up a donation (of expired food) from the grocery store, so it can be different from week to week. Then that night two girls from the church invited us to their house to watch a movie, we aren't allowed to use the ikhaya car for person use, so if we want to go some where we have to get someone to pick us up. So Jayne took us and we watched “Oklahoma”. So where, that was a full Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, are the kind of the same, but I don't restock, so I get a little more time with the kids. Then Friday I restock for the weekend. So that the structure of the week, with odd jobs to fit in when possible, like, cut grass, weed garden, thank you letter for donations, clean out car, help staff with hanging wash, cleaning, or cooking ahead, just stuff like that, that keeps the whole place running. Saturday I have off, which in how I'm writing this letter :) we can was our clothes, and clean our house, and like to night I'm going to some friends house to eat some impala ( some kind of antelope) and watch a rugby game and TV. This should be interesting. lol. :) I did a write up of my over all time here so far (wendy want it for the Ikhaya newsletter) So I thought I would attach here also. Thanks for all your prays and words of encouragement. It means so much when I'm so far from home and family.

When I was young, I had always thought I'd like to work at an orphanage, But as I grew older that desire seemed to get push farther away, but the Lord is so good, he does not put desires in your heart just to leave unfilled. Then when I was 21, it worked out that I could go to Belgium for two months to be a nanny to a missionary family. The next year I went back again to the same family for two more months. I learned so much and it was good for to learn to trust God in new ways. The next year I did a lot of searching, Trying to figure out what God wanted me to do with my life. But as other doors shut and as the desire to learn more about volunteering at orphanage grew. The lord lead me to Ihkaya Lika Baba, and opened up door wide:) July the 6th I landed in South Africa, I had not grasped what it would be like working at an orphanage. When I thought of orphanages before I thought of it beginning crowded, maybe dirty, and a very sad place to be. But now that I've been at Ikhaya for over a month I can say it is different here. It's not a perfect world, but here the children are taken care of, invested in, and most importantly loved. And I've been so blessed to be apart of that. I LOVE being with the kids and giving them love. I will be very sad to leave at the end of September, But I have learned so much sense I have arrived ...how to drive manual, and on the left side of the road( so I could pick up the three oldest kids from school),how abandonment really affects children, how to juggle four children who want your attention all to their selves(still learning on that one:)),how to work as a team with the Ikhaya family, But the greatest thing I've learned is the Greatness of our Lord, thru the love, and passion, that the people here have for God's smallest of children.

One day these little feet will take these little ones into life, into their futures, into their destinies. I pray that their time with us, will in some way pave their future and bring some security, hope and an understanding of how great God's love is for them. That they would grasp this while they are so young.

There was an amazing 'sense of Team' as all participated and got involved, rallying together for the sake of our little ones. Many people were there from early , when it was still dark, setting up for the day under the gazebo. It was a wonderful time of 'rubbing shoulders' with those in the Community and catching up with those whom we do not see everyday. The Teams were in high spirits as they cheered everyone on and ran alongside those who needed encouragement to finish the race. The absolute 'cherry on the top' of this amazing day was being presented witha sizable cheque by RBCT-who so generously reaches out to charities in our Community. We gratefully accepted this which will go towards enlargening our orphanage. We are VERY excited about the new season we are entering!

A huge THANK YOU to all of those who participated in this event and folk who popped in , during the course of the day, to offer their support .

Well done to Abigail Smith who organised all the walking and running teams this year and who put everything together. I know she has put in many hours , behind the scenes and we would like to thank her. We appreciate you Abby. font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; color: black;">As I reflect on the month of March, I am amazed, once again by God's provision- in everything. We desperately needed fans for our children's rooms and thanks to a generous donation from Mitch at Image Air and Gert and Cindy Steyn , we have just been able to install 3 ceiling fans! They have made in immense difference and we are so grateful for this gift! Yesterday, at nap time in 40 degree's I was amused to see one of our pre-schoolers ask for a light blanket to put over her, as she was not used to the fans!

It has been an especially hot summer , with heavy rains at times which has brought the challenge of keeping the grass cut and garden maintained. We were bowled over by Haig's Mowers and Chainsaw Centre who donated us a brand new Yamaha M110 Petrol lawnmower last Thursday! In our excitement of receiving a gift ,we laughed when we overheard one of our volunteers saying we must give this lawnmower a name! Thank you to Len Liversage and his staff from Haig's-we are so grateful for this machine!

A group of our volunteers had the absolute priviledge of a ' Once-in- a -lifetime opportunity' para-gliding experience this last weekend. Craig and Janet Harris arranged for this group of people to spend the weekend in the Drakensburg enjoying some wonderful company, beautiful scenery, delicious meals and the thrill and adrenalin from flying and experiencing a taste of paragliding! This couple have been involved in iKhaya since its inception over 3 years ago and they have been instrumental, along with others, in taking the volunteers under their wings! A huge Thank you to the Harris family for a wonderful weekend.

Our pre-schoolers have just started their holidays and will be off for a week before they re-start school and the volley of public holidays in April. They attended their first fun gala at Empangeni and enjoyed it, despite the very hot conditions.

On 22 March we welcomed a new volunteer Tyla Atherstone who is from Redding in the UK. She will be with us for 2 months and is already fitting in some shifts and has been warmly accepted by the other volunteers, new friens and especially the children.

Tyla was with us for three days before she joined the group in paragliding. Despite being nervous she showed no hesitation at all and would do it again, without thinking!!!! Welcome Tyla!

BWA ladies donated a Natal Mahogany Tree and came and planted it in the iKhaya garden. It is between the sandpit and jungle gym where the children spend a lot of their time, so shade would be welcome- although that may be a couple of years away. The children joined in the Tree Planting Ceremony and were filthy afterwards but enjoyed the juice and cake from Sherry and the BWA.

The children are well and growing and there are some challenges we are facing, as we grow. In order to be admitting more little ones we would need to employ a full quota of staff (4 more full-time staff members)to cope with the growing numbers. The staff will need training, not only first aid but also on how to dispense ARV's and other chronic medications. HIV is rife in South Africa and on the growing trend. Statistics are shocking !What is so tragic to see is that it is almost a chain reaction: adults being affected by HIV, sometimes struggle to be able to find and keep work, leading to poverty, more sickness and ill health and because families are collapsing one by one, it leaves communities in a precarious position. We may not be able to turn it around, but we can reach out and impact a little one's life- one at a time. (one by one by one)

For those who have given so generously this month,be it in monetary form, clothes, groceries, nappies, serving, cooking, shopping, driving, sewing , planting, weeding and all the jobs which are not so evident but vital in the running of iKhaya, we would like to thank you for your generosity, kindness, compassion and for 'living' it out.
She arrived on 22 March and has already ' found her feet' and is an immense help at iKhaya. She has a wonderful way with the children and they trusted her and warmed up to her quickly. She gets down to their level and plays with them. In between this all she is re-stocking, ordering, doing charts, administration and organising. Welcome Tyla!

"Hi, my name is Tyla and I am 18 years old. I currently live in Reading, England with my parent, rwo sisters and brother (who I miss a lot!). I am originally from South Africa but we moved to England in 2002.I have finished school and wasn't ready to go to University just yet (can't think why?) but I am going to University in September to study Finance and Accounting. So, I have taken a Gap Year . I have been working mostly this year but have always wanted to help in another country with children. That is when I heard about iKhaya likaBaba. iKhaya LikaBaba has been so welcoming and I love to be and play with the children. They have infectious laughter which I love!

By Tyla Atherstone

What is new at ikhaya?

We welcomed three new babies in the last couple of weeks. They have all settled in very quickly and they keep our days lively and busy. The latest boy only understood Zulu when he came here, but one of our little girls ,also Zulu, patiently helped him with translating. It is so good to see how the children help eachother.
Now, there are seven children at ikhaya, so for them it is important to learn to share toys, to have turns on the swing, to say sorry after a conflict and not to be loud when the others are sleeping! That is not always as easy as it sounds!!!! They all like to play together in the big new sand pit and climb on people who are bigger than they are which brings MUCH laugher. We love to see their wide smiles and to hear their sweet infectious giggles. They bring joy to our lives!

Not only has the number of children increased at iKhaya, but the home itself has seen some changes. The cement floor in the lounge is now tiled with vinyl tiles, as are most of the rooms. Most of our windows did not have any curtains except for the bedrooms and office, but thanks to generous donators, every window now has curtains or blinds . It looks much more comfortable and like 'home'. Thanks to Jenny the stock room is more organised and everything is labelled and easy to find. Furniture has been repaired, restored and re-painted.

In front of the house, a water drain system is being built to prevent more flooding with the next heavy rains. This next weekend we will be planting a Natal Mahogany tree from the BWA which will be bring much- needed shade.

One of our visitors said "It is fantastic, every time when I come, there is something new at the orphanage and it looks better." - We thank all people who made that possible!

By Timon K.

Seeding Season in March

With the month of March the seeding season has begun. I am 18 years old. Dresden is the most beautiful city- you HAVE to see it-come and visit me!
I am presently volunteering at iKhaya LikaBaba . It is SO nice. The people, the country, the children, the sun- I love it!

I miss my two little sisters and brothers and , of course, my parents . I also really miss German chocolate!!!
I completed my school in Germany. On the 28 June 2011i have to return. (sadly!)
I hope my English has improved because my whole family is coming to visit for 2 and a half weeks, here in South Africa, in February. They will be relying on me for my English skills as I am the only one who can speak some English. This will be hard but also very funny, I think!!!
Do you have any questions? Sadly, we know that the time will come when we will have to say goodbye to these wonderful volunteers later this year in June and August 2011. We are praying for new long term volunteers that will join our family in August of 2011 onwards and bring joy to the childrens lives. If you are interested in volunteering with iKhaya, please contact us and send us the following forms.

We need enthusiastic individuals who have caring hearts. The volunteers will be involved with taking care of orphaned children, maintenance, gardening, office work, website design, fundraising and individuals with international driver's license to help transport children to and from school and doctors appointments.

Some Christmas Cheer!

iKhaya has had a very special Christmas this year. In addition to having some very generously donated gifts our children have had a couple of parties which involved some wonderful snacks, drinks, special lunches and attention lavished upon them.

The Christmas tree which was attired with lights and all kinds of ornaments was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone at iKhaya - children, staff and volunteers. The children were so excited about the shiny lights and made sure to show all visitors their little ornament drums on the tree which they then proceeded to pretend to play on and make music :)

Our volunteers have spent much time with the children helping them paint their own piggy banks, make Christmas decorations, made jelly and even helped the volunteers to vacuum and wash the car!

These seem to be such trivial things but when they are done together, the children have such a sense of accomplishment and involvement in their home.

They have enjoyed their holidays so far and it has been wonderful to spend some days paddling in their little pool, playing with lego, colouring in and playing on their newly erected jungle gym. The sandpit has been a HUGE hit and they are delighted that they have a ‘ beach’ on their front doorstep!!!! We are hoping to erect an awning directly over the sandpit as it is directly in the sun and our trees will take a while to provide some much needed shade in the garden.

Our volunteers have started our own veggie garden. It needs some more preparation before we can start planting but it is nearly there. We are wanting to involve the children and let them water their own little patch regularly. Our little boy will love this as he is always helping with the maintenance around the house and in the garden. The fresh veggies will be a vital source of nutrition to these children, and if it develops further it could lend itself to our sustainability plan, which would be very exciting!!

We still have place for 2 or 3 more little ones in our midst and hope to welcome some new little ones to our family, in the new year. We can receive children aged from 0-3 years, targeting mainly orphaned, as well as abandoned children and babies. Having received our Registration towards the end of last year we are excited about this new season and all that it holds.

iKhaya LikaBaba relies greatly on the help of both local and international volunteers. If you are interested in helping out and being a part of the iKhaya family please visit our website and contact us. You can read more about our current volunteers and their life changing experiences while being with us.

Our biggest need at the moment is basically to cover staff salaries. Presently we have a core of 4 wonderful caregivers which is one lady per shift (day and night). In order to go above 6 babies at one time, we will need to employ more staff in order to cope with demands of having to care for tiny newborns as well as toddlers.

Our caregivers need regular training and updating and are equipped with their basic first aid as well as being authorised to administer anti retrovirals to those who may need it. They are responsible, caring ladies who have proved reliable and honest and who are ‘ hands-on’ with our little ones. One of our ladies took one of our ones for a check–up at the local clinic, she was asked by someone if that little girl was her child. Without hesitating, she replied that is WAS her child. When I heard this I knew it is more than just a job to these ladies. These children are their lives.

<span id="internal-source-marker_0.8362247952758938" style="background-color: transparent;
