My time here in Rome is almost finished. I live here now for five months and I have to say I still never get bored! Every time during the moment that I think: “Now I am used to all the crazy habits and different people” there happens something crazy again that turns my whole day around. I love it and I enjoy it even if it is not always a nice moment.

For this reason there are just some DO’S and DON’TS in Rome. I realized them by myself the last months.

1# DO take your time to relax

Believe me, you will need it. Rome is a big city and there is so much to see. Probably you will have the tendency to visit everything en to do everything that it offers you in a few days but please let it go! Even after 5 months in Rome I haven’t seen everything yet.

Choose the activities that are important for you and take your time. Maybe they will be different from the expectations that other have from you but I can assure you that your vacation will be a lot better and you will have a lot more relaxation. That is just the meaning of a vacation.

2# DO get off the touristic routes sometimes

Rome is beautiful and the touristic places are wonderful and impressive but besides these places there is so much more to see. Rome is more than only the Vatican, Piazza Venezia, Colosseo, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Get off the road and visit some real Italian little streets and let you impress by the local people with their little shops and traditional restaurants.

3# DO NOT fall into the tourist traps

This sounds very easy but it can be tricky! Fake “traditional Italian products” and unexpected expensive restaurants can make your trip pretty sour. For good dinners follow my previous tip. Get off the tourist route and you will find the best traditional restaurants. Restaurants that are located next to big touristic places have a catering that is based on tourists. You pay a lot and the food is most of the time not even traditional Italian.

Also avoid the souvenir shops and street sellers if you are searching, for example, a real Italian made handbag. Most of the time you will find fake products. Only in the shops from the local Italians are the Italian made products. It costs a little bit more but you will definitely not have a made-in-Taiwan handbag.

4# DO not accept flowers, toys or maps from strangers.

They will definitely approach you because you are “beautiful” or they want to “help” you. They call it a gift but in fact it will only cost you trouble and money. When you take it, they want money from you and if you refuse this or you give less than they need, they will come after you till they get what they want.

5#DO dress well

One of the most common mistakes: It is summer, the temperature is warm and you want to get a tan. Of course you will not wear long pants with a sweater but if you would like to enter the churches you really have to cover your shoulders and knees. It is a well-known dress code for men and women. This is also during the real summer days. Always take a scarf or a jacket with you and don’t try to sneak in with only a tank top and hot pants because this is just disrespectful and you will not make any friends with it.

6# DO NOT expect from Rome that everything is the same as in your own country

“In Rome is everything different” Do you know this statement? It is used a lot and it is true. Every day is different and everything happens in a different way than that you are used. Don’t worry, accept it and enjoy it! Welcome in Rome!

All these moments I have experienced by myself and I have learnt from it for sure. In fact it has only inspired me more the last months. The special way how the city and the culture are bounded to each other. This makes the city even more beautiful and which city has not a special description? For some cities like Rome the description is just a little bit longer than normal.

At least there is something that I definitely would like to add for your to-do list.

Roma durante la notte – Rome during the night

You will be amazed! Rome is beautiful and there is always life and enough to do but it really comes into its value during the night when the traffic is muted and the people are sleeping. It is hard to explain and that’s why you really have to experience it!

Italian food habits. It remains something special for me.

Something that is often one of the biggest enemies of the Dutch people is here the most popular.

Of course, everybody likes food and tries to eat in a healthy way, but in Italy it is just a little bit different.

"Food is the highlight of the day"

This is something Italian. If the average European thinks of Italy, the images of delicious pastas and pizzas will appear in their mind. The great thing is that there is much more than just pizza and pasta and the Italians are not shy to show how proud they are on their products.

During my first evening I was in a restaurant together with my internship advisor. This was my “welcome dinner”. He started to talk about food and he tried to explain me some habits from here. A sentence that I will never forget: “In the morning you start with a cornetto and you dip it in your cappuccino”.
I couldn't believe my ears! What kind of crazy person eats an ice cream in the morning and dips it in his coffee? Luckily it become clear to me that they mean a croissant and not the well known ice cream. But to be short. The normal breakfast is not very expanded here in Italy.

The lunch however is quite different. A sandwich with peanut butter? They don’t eat it here especially not for their lunch. They looked very confused at me when I was sitting quietly enjoying my sandwiches with peanut butter and jam. Their first reaction was: "What are you doing?! Things like that you don’t eat for lunch! During the lunch they eat a healthy salad or a hot meal. Pasta, meat, potatoes, pizza, risotto literally everything is passing by. Do they have enough time? Then they make it complete with more courses and a glass of wine!

The first few weeks I have really tried to adjust me, but I had a choice: Or a half hour more sleep or cooking in the early morning. That was an easy choice for me. I will not give up my extra half hour of sleep only for food. I will just eat the sandwich with peanut butter.

Around 21:00 o’clock it is time for dinner. The restaurants are getting filled up and they start with a glass of wine and some bread. The appetizer "primitivo" is usually pasta or risotto, and then comes the main course "secondo" This is a dish with meat or fish. When you still have space in your stomach (what is almost impossible) there will be also a dessert and espresso.

The average Italian will not do this every of course because at home they eat less expanded but it is clear that they love to eat! Fresh products are very important and everything is prepared with great care and attention.

Cappuccino during the evening? Why not? It taste good and it is a good solution if you don’t like espresso. That is quite different here. A cappuccino is for your breakfast and if you really do it in an official way you don’t order it after 11:00 am. So especially not after your diner. They are honest and will just say: “A cappuccino? serious?” A caffè macchiato is a good solution but it is still strong.

There are more habits that I really had to get used to as a foreigner. After a couple of weeks some habits became normal for me but there are still a few habits that are only meant for the real Italians.

Pasqua a Roma

Un'altra nuova esperienza per me: Pasqua a Roma

Tutti i miei compagni di appartamento sono andati nelle loro città natali per visitare le loro famiglie. Ho avuto la fortuna di avere i miei genitori che sono venuti a trovarmi a Roma proprio per la Pasqua.

E’ stato il week-end più attivo, ho camminato tantissimo, come se avvessi fatto 2 maratone!

I miei genitori avevano quattro giorni per visitare i posti più belli. Naturalmente è stato impossibile perché Roma è grande e abbiamo girato solo a piedi. Alla fine del weekend ero esausta. Tra passeggiate, cibo, bibite fresche, il tutto sotto uno splendido sole che ha reso tutto meraviglioso!

Sabato ero un po’ triste perchè ha piovuto tutto il giorno e tutti le persone che arrivano dal nord a Roma hanno lo stesso pensiero: “Finalmente, il tempo sarà migliore che nel mio paese! Ma purtroppo non è stato così, perchè ha piovuto anche qui”.

Ma continuamo a sorridere perché dopo la pioggia viene il sole!

La Domenica il tempo è stato bello e abbiamo deciso di andare in vaticano durante “ l’Angelus” del Papa.

“Il papa”

Wow! Non avevo mai visto tanta gente di fronte al Vaticano. Ed era così difficile camminare con tutte quelle persone. Era bizarro! Dopo dieci minuti ho pensato: Ok, Ho visto il papa (solo la sua ombra perche c'era un grande palo che nascondeva la mia vista) e so come è stare qui con la Pasqua ma voglio andare via ora! Via dalla folla per trovare qualche spazio per respirare.

Tutto mi è sembrato ben organizzato, non era un caos totale ma era solo incredibile a vedersi!

Posso dire decisamente: è molto bello essere a Roma per Pasqua come uno straniero. L'ambiente è bello e c'è molto da fare!

Last week I was sitting with my roommates in the kitchen and we had a nice dinner. We were just talking about normal things and then just suddenly my roommate started to change the subject. He asked us what the best way was to approach a girl.

Me and my two other roommates (both Italian girls) were a little bit surprised!
"Why are you asking us how to approach girls?" "You are an ITALIAN MAN you should know how to approach girls, right?" If Italian men are known by something it will be that they are real womanizers.

Then he told us: "Of course Italian man are womanizers but before you can be a good womanizer you first have to know what they want, right? And the best way to explore that is just to ask to a girl. So that’s why I ask this to you girls." Ok, at this point he was right. It was a smart move because we were just his roommates so it was easy to ask.

He hoped that he would just get one and the same answer but that was not going to happen. My other roommates are Italian and I am from Holland so we have a whole different opinion about men. They like it if the man treats them like a princess, buy all the drinks for them and open every door before they enter etc. In my opinion it is a little bit boring and it makes me feel uncomfortable. I am used to Dutch boys and they are completely different in every way! Of course the boy has to be a gentlemen and make you feel special but the way they do it here is a little bit too much for me.

In Holland, if we think about Italian men we have a very known “stereotype”.

Dark hair and well dressed

Italian men has a very good relationship with their mother

Italian men are womanizers

I live here now for three months and after all the things that I have heard from stories of my

friends, or have seen by myself I have to admit; This stereotype is pretty good in the right direction of the Italian men. I always thought that everyone was exaggerating about the stereotype Italian men. Of course it is also a matter of taste because “well dressed” doesn't mean for everyone the same. Especially not for me. I really had to use to the way that the men are dressed. Actually I think that I am still not used to it but that’s different for everyone.

The fact that they have a very good relationship with their mother is - I think - because family is important for them and the mother is one of the most important family members in the family so that is quite logic.

And of course they are womanizers. That was immediately clear for me from the moment that I stepped out of the plane. They are straight to the point, they think out loud and they love to stare at women.

It is a part of the Italian culture and not every man is exactly like “the stereotype” but if you like these kind of men than is Italy a perfect place to live!

The start of my biggest experience in my life

How will my internship be? What do they expect from me? How is my living place? Who are my roommates? Does someone speak English? What if I get home sick? What kind of people shall I meet?

They raced through my head, over and over again, from left to right and back again. It looked like a washing machine! It will probably be familiar to you, always the same uncertain questions that are actually not necessary…

These were my thoughts during my flight to Rome. I started to realize it from the moment that I said my family and friends goodbye en I stepped into the plane. Was I nervous? Of course! Do I regret it? NEVER!

It all started a few months ago. I had to find an internship for six months. This is an important part of my study Media management. I knew that I wanted more then only an internship in Holland. I was searching for a challenge en I would take it with both hands! My options were very wide and I could choose every country that I wanted. This was not very hard for me to think about.

The city where I saw myself living for six months was Rome. Why? I really don’t know because I didn’t knew that much about the city but I had just a dominant feeling that I had to go there. And of course you all know the well known statement: “Your first feeling is most of the time the right feeling”. I just listened to that feeling and took the challenge. I always wanted to learn Italian so this was the perfect chance!

After all the arrangements with school and the internship agency I finally found an internship that fit perfect to my study. This was not that easy because the internship agency that worked for me was very slow and it was a lot of last minute work.

My place to live was very easily arranged, thanks to company ICOA! They arranged immediately a nice apartment for me in the area of Parioli; A chique area with a lot of doctors, bankers and lawyers. It is a beautiful place very close to the centre of Rome.

My first weeks were exhausting, amazing and spectacular! Everything went well and I knew it for sure: I had made the right choice. Getting used to the Italian culture is not very easy for a real Dutch girl. Now after three months I am finally getting to realize everything and I feel myself a little less foreign. As a foreign citizen I experience the craziest things during my work and during my free time and I experience everything from a completely different perspective than I do normally as a tourist. Every week a new post about things that are happening here should be enough to get an impression of my life here in Rome!

La Nuova Stazione Tiburtina a Roma

Il progetto della nuova Stazione Tiburtina a Roma nasce da una partnership tra il Comune e le Ferrovie dello Stato. Destinata a diventare nodo di scambio intermodale di livello internazionale, nazionale, regionale e metropolitano.

La stazione pensata come una galleria aerea con la sua conformazione a ponte avrà anche il compito di riunificare i due quartieri, Pietralata e Nomentano, storicamente separati dalla vecchia ferrovia grazie sia ad un sistema di servizi contenuti al suo interno, sia attraverso l’elemento del grande boulevard urbano, coperto e sopraelevato, che scavalca i binari.

Elementi costitutivi: due atri, uno sul lato Nomentano e l’altro lato Pietralata uniti dalla galleria-ponte da cui si accede alla quota dei binari. Il progetto - disegnato dal gruppo di progettazione ABDR (capogruppo Paolo Desideri) vincitore dell'apposito concorso internazionale di architettura promosso da RFI - interessa una superficie di circa 50.000 mq.

Sambuci e il Fantasma Protettore del Castello

Castello Theodoli di Sambuci

Secondo una ottocentesca leggenda nel parco del Castello Theodoli di Sambuci, poco distante da Tivoli, appare periodicamente il fantasma di una giovane donna protettore di un tesoro nascosto al suo interno mai trovato nonostante varie ricerche.

Il Castello di Sambuci, dopo anni di degrado e di abbandono, è stato acquistato dal Comune nel 1991, ed è stato ufficialmente aperto al pubblico nel 2002.

Il piccolo borgo di Sambuci - il cui nome deriva dalla presenza sul territorio di piante di sambuco - è posto tra i monti Tiburtini e i Ruffi a 434 m slm. Distante circa 45 km da Roma è facilmente raggiungibile mediante l’autostrada A24, uscita Castel Madama o Vicovaro-Mandela.

Ministero della Difesa Identifica altri Tre Caduti delle Fosse Ardeatine

Entrata delle Fosse Ardeatine, Roma, Italia

Sono stati identificati 3 caduti nell'eccidio delle Fosse Ardeatine del 1944, grazie al lavoro del Ris sul Dna. Lo rende noto il ministero della Difesa.

"La complessa attività scientifica ha permesso, con ragionevole certezza, di dare un nome a tre dei 10 caduti 'noti ma non identificati' e dei due 'ignoti' inumati alle Fosse Ardeatine", fa sapere la Difesa.

Con una certezza superiore al 99% sono stati identificati Marco Moscati (sacello 283) e Salvatore La Rosa (273) e con una certezza del 92% Michele Partito (sacello 155).

Le analisi sono iniziate su richiesta della Comunità Ebraica di Roma e dell'Anfim al Presidente della Repubblica e al ministero.

Identificazione avvenuta a un giorno dal 68° Anniversario dell'Eccidio Ardeatino.

Lizzera e la Geniale Idea

Tolfa, Veduta panoramica

I turchi, dopo i vani tentativi di sconfiggere i tolfetani ed entrare nella città, cercarono di prendere Tolfa per fame.

Erano quasi riusciti nel loro intento quando una giovane popolana di nome Lizzera ebbe una geniale idea avallata dai suoi conpaesani.

Nutrirono a sazietà con il poco grano rimasto una capretta che spinsero poi fuori delle mura.

I turchi dopo aver ucciso e mangiato l'animale ben nutrito fecero una rapida riflessione: se le bestie sono così ben pasciute è segno evidente che la popolazione di Tolfa non muore di fame e smisero l'assedio.

Oggi, Tolfa è un piccolo comune della provincia di Roma con più di 5 mila abitanti.

La Leggenda dell'Anello di Enea

Nella facciata del Castello di Lanuvio - comune della provincia di Roma - antistante piazza Bernini, c'è un grosso anello di ferro
.

Secondo una leggenda popolare Enea lo utilizzò per attraccare la sua nave al suo arrivo nel Lazio.

Si tratta invece l'anello della gogna, lo strumento medievale punitivo e di tortura utilizzato per esporre i condannati in piazza allo scherno del popolo.

L'Unzione di Don Tobia

Oggi a Mentana (Piazza Borghese in una fotografia di Yannick Carer su Flickr), è il giorno della festa di S. Biagio e gli abitanti del comune della provincia di Roma per tradizione andranno in chiesa per ricevere l'unzione con l'olio santo.

La pratica dell'unzione consiste nello sfregare sul collo del fedele un batuffolo di ovatta imbevuto con l'olio benedetto.

Il vecchio Don Tobia, racconta Salvatore Vicario, ideò un sistema ingegnoso per risparmiarsi la fatica. Prese un cordino lungo quanto l'altare e posizionò i batuffoli di ovatta sul cordino in corrispondenza dei punti in cui si sarebbero inginocchiati i fedeli con le spalle rivolte all'altare.

I due chierichetti posizionati ai lati opposti della chiesa tesero la corda tirando a loro stessi le estremità della stessa mentre Don Tobia tirava a sè la funicella dal punto centrale come si fa per scoccare la freccia con l'arco. Ogni volta che lasciava la fune i parrocchiani genuflessi venivano colpiti sul collo dall'ovatta.

Il giorno della cerimonia alcune persone non vennero toccate dal batuffolo di ovatta e alle loro lamentele il parroco rispose: "A chi à còtu, à còtu; la botta è partita e vale pe' tutti!".

Scoperto Interruttore Genetico che Rende il Lupus Ancora più Feroce

Scoperto da ricercatori della Facoltà di Medicina e chirurgia dell'Università Cattolica di Roma un interruttore genetico che rende ancora più "feroce" il Lupus, una malattia autoimmune che colpisce prevalentemente il sesso femminile.

Questo interruttore, che si chiama "enhancer HS1.2", è come il pedale di accelerazione dell'automobile e iperattiva una serie di geni che amplificano la risposta immunitaria patologica tipica della malattia.

Il risultato finale è che le cellule immunitarie impazzite che producono gli anticorpi patologici, attaccano il corpo del paziente invece di difenderlo (autoanticorpi). (Continua a leggere... )

Affile e la Leggenda della Madonna del Giglio

Secondo la leggenda, nei primi giorni di agosto dell'anno 1759 la popolazione di Affile, piccolo comune della provincia a est di Roma nel Lazio, impaurita da un sisma che aveva provocato ingenti danni a cose e persone si era raccolta in preghiera vicino
all'immagine della Madonna per chiedere la fine terremoto.

Precedentemente degli uomini avevano deposto un vaso con dei fiori di giglio per onorare la sacra effigie. Questi rinsecchiti dal tempo prodigiosamente rifiorirono e al tempo stesso le scosse del terremoto cessarono.

In ricordo fu costruita una piccola chiesa che divenne ben presto meta di pellegrinaggio dei devoti della Madonna del Giglio e ogni prima domenica di agosto viene celebrata in suo onore una festa.

Seminario a Roma sull'Organizzazione e Tecnologie per l'Integrazione nel TPL e nella Mobilità Sostenibile

"Organizzazione e Tecnologie per l'Integrazione nel TPL e nella Mobilità Sostenibile" è il titolo del seminario che si terrà presso il Chiostro della Facoltà di Ingegneria (Via Eudossiana, 18, 00184 Roma) il prossimo 22 febbraio.

Gli organizzatori dell'evento sono Federmobilità in collaborazione con la Facoltà di Ingegneria di Roma e Isfort (Istituto Superiore di Formazione e Ricerca per i Trasporti), da sempre attenti ai temi dell’integrazione nel governo e nell’organizzazione del tpl (trasporto pubblico locale) e della mobilità.

Tre i temi di discussione:

1) integrazione nei rapporti interistituzionali e nell’uso strategico delle risorse (oggetto di un primo seminario tenutosi il 24 gennaio).

2) integrazione funzionale sul piano organizzativo e tecnologico (oggetto del secondo seminario, previsto per il seminario del 22 febbraio).

3) uso ottimale e integrato delle risorse economiche e finanziare disponibili corre trasversalmente ai primi due e come tale è presente in entrambi i seminari programmati.

Ucciso a colpi di arma da fuoco un uomo di 64 anni nel quartiere Gianicolense, a Roma, in zona Bravetta. Il corpo è stato ritrovato vicino a un garage in via del
Fontanile Arenato. Sul posto è intervenuta la polizia. Non è chiaro se l'uomo sia stato ucciso davanti ai garage condominiali dello stabile dove l'uomo probabilmente abitava. La vittima aveva un precedente per droga risalente ad almeno venti anni fa. Contro di lui sono stati sparati almeno due colpi di pistola, uno lo ha raggiunto alla testa uccidendolo.

Strisce di Luce nelle Vie di Roma

Una foto di Via Appia Nuova a Roma scattata con un Nikon Coolpix. Per avere l'effetto delle strisciate di luce ho posizionato la macchina fotografica sul cavalletto e ho scattato con un diaframma f11 e un tempo di posa lungo.
