Manny Pacquiao

Tomorrow, Filipinos from all walks of life will witness another challenge to our very own Manny Pacquiao. As usual the streets will be empty as people will be anticipating his fight in accommodating venues. Hopes are high that he will come out the victor of this bout.

Searching the web I found a paper model of Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao designed by PaperToy Adventures and another from robeastblog. The models are very simple, more like a box model of him in red trousers with details of his six packs and the facial hair trademark.

They are very nice models to put on your desk as tribute to our beloved boxing hero Manny.

As we all know Manny is a Filipino boxer who hails from General Santos City, in his early years of training as a boxer he has come far from where he started. Manny is currently the WBO World Welterweight champion and the first boxer in history to win 7 world titles in 7 different weight divisions. Manny and Margarito are fighting for the vacant WBC Super Welterweight World Title.

I have yet to build the models, but for those who are interested to build the models you can go to the websites mentioned above to download the templates.

mh-53 Pave Low

I recently found this paper model on the web from a forum, it's approximately 2 feet long. And what I like more about it is the details it has both interior and external. I have had some templates of the model from other publishers, but haven't tried building them, except this one.

The model itself was a handful but made some modifications on it like adding fuselage reinforcements, adding a part in the rotor and made it fold-able, and placed the miniguns and the .50 cal on the gun stations as the original did come with such parts.

This is my 4th helicopter paper model that I have built and it never seizes to amaze me when I finish one. The Pave Low in particular is one of my favorites since I see it a lot in the movies like the Transformers: ROTF as the Decepticon "Blackout".

I'm not sure though what variant of the MH-53 the model is so for FYI:

MH-53J Pave Low IIIE is a modified version of the HH-53 Super Jolly Green Giant, a heavy lift helicopter which was used extensively during the Vietnam War.
The MH-53J's mission is to perform low-level, long-range, undetected penetration into denied areas, day or night, in adverse weather, for infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces.
The MH-53 helicopter is a highly versatile aircraft. It is used for a variety of missions, usually in conjunction with special operations.
The MH-53 is a two-engine, single-rotor, heavy-lift helicopter. It has a crew of six and can be refueled while in flight. It has a precision navigational and communications package, which makes it excellent for conducting deep infiltration and exfiltration missions.
The MH-53 helicopter can fly at night in all weather and terrain conditions. It can follow down to 100 feet and operate from unprepared sites. It is fitted with three gun stations for a mix of 7.62-mm miniguns and caliber .50 machine guns.

Pave Low III

Under the Pave Low III program, the Air Force modified nine MH-53H's and 32 HH-53s for night and adverse weather operations. Modifications included forward-looking infrared, inertial global positioning system, Doppler navigation systems, terrain-following and terrain-avoidance radar, an on-board computer, and integrated avionics to enable precise navigation to and from target areas. The Air Force designated these modified versions as MH-53J's.

The MH-53J Pave Low III heavy-lift helicopter is the largest and most powerful helicopter in the Air Force inventory, and the most technologically advanced helicopter in the world. Its terrain-following, terrain-avoidance radar and forward-looking infrare d sensor, along with a projected map display, enable the crew to follow terrain contours and avoid obstacles, making low-level penetration possible.

The helicopter is equipped with armor plating, It can transport 38 troops or 14 litters and has an external cargo hook with a 20,000-pound (9,000-kilogram) capacity.

It has twin turbo-shaft engines; self-lubricating, all-metal main and tail rotors; and a large horizontal stabilizer on the tail rotor pylon's right side.

MH-53J's were used in a variety of missions during Desert Storm. And Pave Lows were among the first aircraft into Iraq that led AH-64 Apaches to destroy Iraqi early warning radars and busted a hole in enemy air defenses for the opening air armada. In addition to infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special forces teams throughout Iraq and Kuwait, Pave Lows provided search and rescue coverage for coalition air forces in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Turkey and the Persian Gulf.

An MH-53J was the first successful make a combat recovery of a downed pilot in Desert Storm. Following the war, MH-53J's were deployed to Northern Iraq to support Operation "Provide Comfort', assisting displaced Kurds. Pave Lows were also used extensively during Operation 'Just Cause" in Panama.

Pave Low IV

The MH-53M Pave Low IV was modified from the MH-53J configuration with the addition of Interactive Defensive Avionics System/Multi-Mission Advanced Tactical Terminal or IDAS/MATT. The system enhanced the defensive capabilities of the Pave Low. It provided instant access to the total battlefield situation, through near real-time Electronic Order of Battle updates. It also provided a new level of detection avoidance with near real-time threat broadcasts over-the-horizon, so crews can avoid and defeat threats, and replan enroute if needed.

The MH-53 Pave Low's last mission was on 27 September 2008, when the remaining six helicopters flew their last combat missions in support of special operations forces in Southwest Asia. These MH-53Ms were retired shortly thereafter.

Humvee (HMMWV) M1097A2

Ever since I saw the Hummer I immediately liked it. My first actual encounter with one was just amazing. It's the ultimate 4 four wheel drive vehicle for me. I started building one from scratch years ago but lacked the skills at the time and eventually bought a plastic model from Tamiya.
Through the years I still search for paper models of the Humvee. I have tried building one from Fly Model but due to its small scale and my premature skills I didn't quite like the way it turned out. I'm hoping to built it again in a bigger scale since it had lots of small details that would surely be great to see. Recently got a Humvee (HMMWV) M1097A2 papermodel from 3krapki and started building it 3 days ago Currently I'm painting it by brush since I printed it in monochrome. It's bigger than my other two models and seems I like the result of it. Here are the pictures I took while building it.

I tried building one of the Wildcat planes and was pleased of how they turned out. They are very small considering the scale of the Saratoga, but still manageable to build. I did a Google search on Wildcat planes, they had very significant achievements during the war and seen lots of action in Guadalcanal.

Hopefully, I'll have the Saratoga done this month.

B-24 Liberator

The B-24s were contracted by North American in 1942. The first 25 aircraft built were the B-24G and based on the late block B-24D. These aircraft had a Sperry ball turret and three .50-cal. machine guns in the nose; however, combat experience showed the B-24D and early B-24G to be vulnerable to frontal attack, so design data for the Ford-built B-24H was incorporated in the North American version resulting in the B-24G-1. This version had an Emerson nose turret in place of the two or three .50-cal. machine guns used on earlier models.

A total of 430 B-24Gs were built and most were sent to the 15th Air Force in Italy. North American began delivering B-24G-1 Liberators in November 1943.

This is my B-24 Liberator paper plane model from GPM. This was my first paper plane model to build, took me a week to put together. I built this 2 years ago and back then I was a newbie in the paper modeling hobby. When I look at the model right now I could notice details that I should have taken time to piece together. The paper plane model was a simple model to build given the scale that is 1:33, was very much manageable. I like how the gun ports are detailed. The 4 engines and the landing gears were a bit challenging that I did not pay much attention then. The paper plane model now lies on the floor set and had been giving incredible reactions from my friends when they see it specially when I tell them its made of paper. Anyway here are the photos of the paper plane.

Jaguar E-Type

The Jaguar E-Type was my first paper car model to build. At that time I had no colored printer yet, so I just printed it in monochrome. I used old card stock that had been misprinted and just painted the paper car with poster paint. I got the templates from the Canon paper craft website and was so excited to have found it.

The real Jaguar E-type is one of the most famous models produced by British sports car manufacturer Jaguar, that was founded in 1922. This model garnered high remarks at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1961 featuring its low-set, streamlined appearance and state-of-the-art mechanics. The Series 1 first went on the market in 1961and sported an inline six-cylinder, 3.8 liter DOHC engine. Later In 1964, it was upgraded to a 4.2 liter. Several minor changes were made up until 1971 and resulted in the twin-six engine of the Series 3. In the US this model is known as the XK-E that enjoyed high levels of popularity. Although the E-type went off the market in 1975, its curved lines remained to influence designers, and is still well-loved by car enthusiasts world wide. This paper model is based on the E-type Series 1, a car that was first introduced in North America in 1967. It complied with the American safety standards of that time. It was known as the 11/2 because of its similarity to the Series 2. The new features in this model included forward positioning of the head

What have I been up to? Part 2

I was hanging out in paper model forums lately and I found some members who design their own models. Building and designing are two different things in the paper modeling hobby. You can build from the designs and some design to build. Like me, I'm more of a builder and less of a designer.

But it would be great to have the best of both. Anyway, I tried to design using the programs they were referring but not for a paper model. I started on redesigning my logo using Google Sketchup. And this are the results:

Perhaps, making a paper model of my cube logo would not be a bad idea. But I have to try Pepakura first. A member once explained to me the design process as simple and straightforward:

1. Create Wireframe

2. Unfold

3. Test Build

4. Refine

5. Apply Texture

6. Final Build

Currently, I'm trying my hands on Blender, Google Sketchup and Pepakura Designer. I've been downloading some .3ds files at the Google 3Dwarehouse to unfold in Pepakura. So far, I am limited to what my computer can handle. For me designing takes time compared to building the available designs. With so many models around to build I hardly imagine designing my own. But the satisfaction you get from designing a model gives you lots of praises knowing that a lot of people will be building from your designs specially if the models are popular and most requested. Different individuals have different learning curves, perhaps I'll be doing mine in my own pace.

What have I been up to? Part 1

It's been an exhausting month for me that I had not posted any updates for August. I'll try to make up by posting my progress on the SARATOGA and the other things that I've been up to lately.

First up is, the SARATOGA is still half done. I'ts a huge model with lots of details. I know from the very beginning it was going to be a challenge and I'm not putting it down. I just got burned up and needed to get some diversions for my anxiety to have the model done soon. Anyway, here are some pictures of my progress:

This model from GPM as I mentioned is very detailed, and is my first huge undertaking. If you can see from the pictures, well so much for the forgiving quality, I have yet to put on the turrets and cannons on each side. I have made some mistakes on the holding bay for the planes (the hole in the middle) I had the parts fitted in reverse side, that I did not notice earlier in the building process. I had some ladder placement errors as well as you can see some white lines where I had to remove the parts and place them in their proper areas. The "Island" is a complicated part. I should have placed the support beams of each level that I later found out it was difficult to put them in due to the small spaces that I can no longer reach with my fingers. This reminds me to get some tweezer or forceps to add to my craft tools. So far, so good I feel happy to have gone this far in the building stage. I have yet to built the planes that go with this model. Given the right place and time to build this model I estimate to have it done in a month or less. Anyway, I'll be updating you again of my progress in the days to come.

USS Saratoga CV3

I've never build a ship before, bigger than the Foldoy I built from JSC, but it was kinda small since it was a ferry boat model. I wanted to build a bigger one and what could be bigger than an aircraft carrier. And so, I browsed in my collection and took out all the ship models particularly the aircraft carriers.

It was hard to choose from the Saratoga, Enterprise, Lexington, Victorious and the Shokaku since they are all very detailed huge. Nonetheless, I chose the Saratoga from GPM due to its history. Here is my progress after 5 days since I started.

The Mille Miglia by Loudog

I took a break from my Star Wars collection and after building the KRISS by Jules Perdana of Paper-replica.com, now I tried my hands on building another motorcycle. I did a Vespa before from the same designer, but this time I'm building the Mille Miglia paper model desiged by Luis “Loudog” Lopez of Portland, Oregon, USA.

He based the design on the real custom bike which was designed and built for the Discovery Channel’s "Biker Build Off" by Marcus Walz of Walz Hardcore Cycles. It was named the “Mille Miglia” after the 1000 Mile roadtrip Walz took om his way to Laughin, Nevada where his bike was judged and voted the winner. FYI the price tag of the real thing is a $100+, so I'm building one instead.

The model took me a week to build. According to the instructions the model has the following specs:

length = 18 inches (46cm)

width = 6 inches (15 cm) measured from the ends of the footpegs

height = 7 inches (18cm)
Its a 1:5 or so scale.

Loudog made a very detailed and precise template that really had the parts fit well together. And the instructions were very useful and easy to understand. Overall I am very pleased with my build and thanks to Loudog for sharing this paper model.

The Kriss Super V Sub Machine Gun

I took a break from the Star Wars Collection and built this submachine gun designed by Julius Perdana of paper-replika.com. Its a 1:1 scale paper model so its like owning your own Kriss. Took me 3 days to complete but had it set aside for a month until I decided to custom paint it.

The Military channel featured this weapon and was voted the Best SMG on their segment "Ultimate weapons". It's the only semi-auto carbines designed and proven to improve your accuracy in the field and on the range. Now, that is true on the real thing, but this here is just for show and display. It looks cool on the wall though. Anyway, thats another papermodel done and I hear Julius is modeling another 1:1 scale of the SVD Dragunov Sniper Rifle. Will be building that too.

Star Wars AT-AT

Here is my second addition to my Star Wars collection, the AT-AT.

It's the big brother of the AT-ST Walker. This model is also from Shunichi Makino. The AT-AT paper model has movable legs, same with the head part which swivels in all directions. Unfortunately, I was hoping for the model to be bigger than the AT-ST just like in the movie. Anyway, I am very happy that I now have two models in my collection and next I'll be building the Sand Crawler.

Star Wars AT-ST Walker

I have always been a big fan of Star Wars. In my early childhood days the movie was literally out of this world. I kept on wondering who played the characters of C3P0 and R2D2, since they thin and small respectively. Anyway, I never had a toy collection of the Star Wars characters, so I decided to built them for my collection.

To start with I built this AT-ST Walker (All Terrain Scout Transport) designed by Shunichi Makino. The model has some details printed on rather than having to glue them piece by piece, which I would very much enjoy. The more detailed it is the more I love building it. Anyway, since there were no other paper models of the AT-ST that is full of details, this is the closest I can get my hands on.

As it is, details like the entry hatch on top that can be opened, the hand rails around the hatch, the chin-mounted double medium blaster cannon, the concussion grenade launcher on the left and right side of its head, and the 2 "durasteel" feet with claws.

It needs more texture though like the the hydraulics on its legs and armor platings. The scale of which, I don't know but it is a big model maybe a 1:33 scale. Overall its an easy model to build and fairly detailed, but you could always modify it to your likings. Next I'll be building its big brother the AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport).

The Audi-R8 Supercraft

I was browsing through google buzz for related topics as mine. Like when I read about Taras Lesko's works for example the huge Gundam paper model he designed and built.
There was also another model that caught my attention, the Audi-R8 paper model, which he of course and the Turn 10 Studios designed and built for the Forza Motorpsort 3. This guy, I think has a thing for designing and building huge models, which I am very much interested also. His Audi-R8 is build on a 1/6 scale and it really looks like a replica of the real thing. 4-Foot-Tall Fan-Made Freedom Gundam Paper Sculpture

The ZGMF-X10A Freedom mech from "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED" made from nothing more than sheets of paper, glue, and a strong determined ambition. I admire the Gundam anime' series but never was I able to really follow the story, I just liked the manned-giant robots constantly in battle and upgraded with newly discovered materials from steel to the fictional Gundanium alloy. Taras Lesko on the other hand, who is a fan has successfully crafted a 4-foot-tall version of the Gundam mech model. Now, that's what I call creativity. His website has lots to offer and are all very interesting.

Optimus Prime is now ready for download

Finally, Optimus Prime is ready for download.
Julius Perdana of paper-replika.com announced that his Optimus Prime paper model is finally complete is now ready to be shared amongst the paper modelling enthusiasts around the world. He has been working on this project for the last 8 months, and recently designed other paper models despite the World Cup fever happening. All in all the paper model consists of five parts. The legs consists of 122 pages of patterns each. The waist part has only 13 page patterns. The arms consists of 39 pages of patterns each. The torso has 34 page patterns. And the head has 9 page patterns. Now, thats a lot of pages but it's all worth it. Another addition to my collection after Bumble bee from paperinside.com. I almost forgot to mention Julius also designed a Peterbilt 379 - Optimus Prime in Vehicle mode.

Bumble bee also has 2 vehicle mode models of the 1976 and 2009 Camaros. These are also in my to build list. The list is getting longer and I haven't started any of them yet. Now, for those of you who wants to try their hands on these models, you can visit their sites by clicking the underlined words.

After days of wrestling through as to where and what to glue the legs and joints, finally he is standing.

I positioned him on top of two disposed CDs, one on each foot, secured by glue. Then posed him in a kung fu stance. I also glued the lower torso, leg and knee joints to make it stable.

Unfortunately, he won't be able to be repositioned but he's meant for display not PLAY. At the back you can also see the B-24J Liberator, I'll post pictures of that also in the next posts. I'm glad that's over with, now to attend to other projects in mind.

fixn bumble bee to stand on its own

i recently finished building the bumble bee paper model of the movie "Transformers" from the paperinside website. i can't seem to keep it standing on its own. i had it posed differently but it just keeps falling off. so i had the leg joints glued fixed and added some paper clip stoppers for added support to keep it from bending. before, i made a stand from a thick tie wire hanger but i didn't like how the model looked like as it was suspended and the wire was in the way of its legs. anyway, i hope i get this done already since one of my favorite paper model sites is working on OP "optimus prime" and is near completion. can't wait to start building it.

new logo

was so preoccupied lately on lots of things, didn't have time to update my blog...
anyway, i took time to make a new logo today. it's very crude but i like it, very nationalistic. making a logo is hard, took the whole day to come with a concept but perhaps if i were a graphic artist or had it done professionally things would have been different. since i'm not so here it is, an isometric view of a cube with the national colors red, blue, white and yellow representing a 3 dimension object for paper modeling. i should make a paper model of my logo for a start, that would be original.

my Vespa 150

here is one of my papermodels I built from paper-replika.com a year ago, the Vespa 150. I'm not sure of the scale it's in but it is a big model. It looks really nice when placed on your desk to impress your workmates. This is an old picture with the British flag accents, which I later painted to a blue shade color. It is now in display on my wifes office cubicle on top her desktop pc. Will post the new pictures soon...
