Hi everyone,
Today's post is my submission for RedRock's Fashion Illustration Rally. It's Illustration Rally's first fashion rally and what an awesome rally indeed. RedRock supplied the reference imagery and I dare say it was difficult to choose just one. In the end, the textures of the skirt and tank was the ultimate decider of the final composition. I hope you like it!

AyrSpace Christmas Market

Until December 24, six paintings from my Portfolio will show at the AyrSpace Christmas Market. This year, together with the curator, Jill Yuzwa, we decided to print my digital artwork onto high-quality canvas. The framing shop Picture Perfect was ever helpful to follow through with this task, as it is the very first time AyrSpace has shown digital art!

As well as wall art, scarves, pottery, and carved bowls all created by hand are available to purchase at AyrSpace. Make sure to stop by and check out the gallery when you're in the area this holiday season. (Please note that I Confess is no longer available to purchase.)

Also, the painting India Bride has been offered up to the Foster Parents Association of Niagara silent auction. Admittedly it was hard to part with but for a cause we so believe in.

Also shown in the photos above is the work of artists Pat Kalyn, Linda Sanderson and Zenon Billings.

The third and (potentially) final illustration inspired by Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless. This scene was chosen for the brilliant connection between the characters in this moment. An autumn inspired palette was decided upon.

This illustration was inspired by Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 masterpiece À bout de souffle, Breathless, starring Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo. This movie is magic on many levels; it doesn't let you forget that what you're watching is in fact movie (and, with bells on). For example, main parts were filmed outside the studio (which was unheard of at the time) in Paris's city streets while in plain vision pedestrians gawk at the camera with no directorial intention of hiding it.

"Jean-Luc would just turn up scribble some dialogue and we would rehearse maybe a couple of times so I knew where to point the camera vaguely."

When painting this, my main concern with not intruding upon François Truffaut and Godard's genius but rather I wanted it to be more of a homage to them and this movie.

If you have not seen this movie, you should. It's awesome.

Arrangement in Pink and Grey: Sunset Boulevard

"All right Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close -up."

Today's illustration is a scene inspired by the 1950 film noir Sunset Boulevard. Using harmonious color pairings, it was my objective to zero in on the aesthetic of the image. While painting this illustration, I was also inspired in part by the Impressionist Mary Cassatt. The post's title is a tribute to American artist James Abbott Whistler, who was an ambassador for the belief of l'art pour l'art, or, art for art's sake.

Have you seen Sunset Boulevard? And if so, did you agree with the movie's comparison of Norma Desmond to Dicken's Miss Havisham of Great Expectations? Are you a fan of film noir? Let me know in the comments section below!

The Appaloosa

My thing for Marlon Brando movies started when I first watched A Streetcar Named Desire about six months ago. Since then, I've managed to watch about a dozen more Brando films, loving pretty much every one. Here I have illustrated a scene from his 1966 movie The Appaloosa. I wanted to show a sense of passion in this painting. Being so used to smiling faces, the pensive, pained facial expression was what led me to choosing this scene.

Are you a Brando fan? Have you seen The Appaloosa, or any of his older (shall I say younger) movies?

Garden Geisha - AyrSpace Exhibit

Painted in response to the recent disaster in Japan, this 24" x 30" framed canvas painting will be on exhibit at AyrSpace in Ayr, Ontario, where it will able to purchase. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross for support of the Japanese Earthquake victims.

Update: Garden Geisha has been sold but, fear not, will be on display till the beginning of August alongside a slew of awesome artwork produced by talented artists from around the world.

Today's posting is the third illustration I produced for Jaclyn of Audrey Grace Boutique. This illustration depicts Audrey Hepburn and cat lounging in a grassy field. The colors are bright and optimistic, indeed I enjoyed painting this scene. I sourced this image.

Here is another illustration I created for Audrey Grace Boutique, a woman's fashion boutique with a passion for illustration. This illustration entitled "Charlotte" was awesome to do because I haven't painted in greyscale for some time now. This illustration, along with the Bennet Sisters illustration, will be on display and for sale at the Grand Opening of Audrey Grace Boutique in Jackson, Mississippi USA in November. Only one copy of each illustration will be available, identifying them as one of a kind.
