Illustrators Australia - 9x5 Exhibition

We will be exhibiting some of our work in the exhibition held by Illustrators Australia called "Untold Stories - 15th Annual 9x5 Exhibition & Auction".

It is held at Space 39, 39 Little Collins Street Melbourne, on September 17 from 6pm!

Amz Kelso

(Amelia) Amz Kelso is a Nineteen-year-old illustration student who dabbles in illustration, jewellery making and sewing. Aside from food with faces, she loves to draw moustaches, sea creatures, cowboys and collagen-junkie girls with hair as bright as the sun. Her inspirations include James Jean, Tomer Hanuka, Alex Pardee and Heisuke Kitazawa; in addition with fashion, music and literature. Since a trip to Japan in 2007, her style has become more and more influenced by the manga/anime style; she now draws comics in a heavily Japanese style.
She has skills in both design and illustration, working for promotional music packages, participating in exhibitions throughout highschool and tafe; and enjoying every minute of it. She spends her free time sewing strange felt toys, scribbling comics, writing novels and crafting shrimp jewellery. In the future she hopes to open her own studio with close friend and fellow illustrator, Kitty Poduska.

I like to take an experimental approach to most of my projects, I think art is so boundless that it would be a shame to hold back when there's so much out there to discover. I would say my current style now would be contemporary based and revolves around memories and dreams. The most common media I use is acrylic paint, fine-liner, any found media and lost objects I might find along the way.

Greetings and salutations my friends!

I go by the name Colm; my story is not like any other.

For I gave up a life of crime fighting and baddy bashing to pursue my dreams of one day becoming an illustrator. A hard journey it has been, and it promises to only get harder.

I do however, remain strong. Though the streets call out to me for help I must stay determined and focused... inside on the computer.

I primarily work digital!!!

These Illustrations are by Emilia Fernands aka Alegria Art. My paintings are visual journal entries of thoughts and experiences of everyday life. The majority of my paintings are not planned, it is just a matter of persisting until something of interest tranquillizes my spirit. Underneath the beauty of a simple common flower, lies its will to live. And it is a cycle of life, change and rebirth. Consider this: we are all the same! The flowers are so close to my hand, my mind, and my eyes and I can include them in my dream, which becomes a reality. Does not life and fate somehow always call us to the impossible by finding blessings and losses, for better in the long run? This opens up the possibility for lived experiences to be both creative and transforming. Like all of this, we do have the possibility to transform what the Creator has created! There is no doubt that beautiful surroundings provide us with a favourite environment that helps us thrive. Flowers are an elementary and affordable way to add a splash of colour and emotion into my life.

Born in Queensland and raised in South America, Chile.

Inspired by soldiers carrying heavy swords and twice they’re size, and huge dragons I decided to become an illustrator for it, but the choice was serious, leaving my country to come to Australia and forge this career of “illustrator”, now here I learnt new techniques and expanding my drawings, these days I just don’t draw dragons and soldiers. Also the street art culture of Chile lives strong in me combining these two styles.

To keep on creating worlds and transforming them!!!!...on the paper that is.

Felicity Yang is a 20-year-old illustrator comin’ atcha from Melbourne. Her migration from Queensland two years ago has seen her inspired, matured, and noticeably more pasty-skinned. More importantly, she has spent those two years studying illustration at NMIT crafting a sweet portfolio to throw at your face. Refusing to accept the death of the traditional ‘all-by-hand’ in the face of digital technology, her work is sensitive, detailed, and sometimes has mistakes. Her inspiration comes from people, machinery, buildings, plants and animals – presenting every day kind of imagery in a way you don’t see every day. Unless you’re crazy or extremely drunk.

Jo Waite has been a comic artist for more than 20 years and refuses to be lured from comics into any more sensible and lucrative work.Her comics have appeared in various small press compilations, Tango the Giant Romance Comic Aanthology, Heat, Going Down Swinging, and she has printed her own comics, zines and Diaries since 1987. Her minicomic "One Sock the Lovesick Devil" is up to issue #5, and a new book Kickstart details some of her adventures with Centrelink. Of course she is working on a Graphic Novel; it's so hot right now!

Kitty Poduska

Kitty Poduska is a Melbourne illustrator who enjoys puns, dad jokes and laughing too loudly. Her work is somewhere in between detailed pattern based pieces and more acrylic mediums, often using loveable cute characters-with a darker side. She also loves to dapple in textiles and is looking forward to one day running a studio jointly with Amz Kelso.

Lachlan is an illustrator who draws what he sees, only what he sees is usually optimistically distorted and covered with three inches of fur. He likes axolotls, monotremes, onomatopoeias and kettles, and spends too much of his time doodling and not nearly enough time building boxforts. Lachlan, also known as Lachyen, Lachman and other such aliases is from a town in the sticks that you’ve never been, and going somewhere you’ve never heard of.

Steven Walpole

Steven Walpole’s work is inspired by political and controversial topics. It is of course not always appropriate.

He usually uses ink and pen most of the time usually because by the time he puts so much detail into the work the pieces become dated very quickly. Of course in his works he would add colours if he thinks an art piece will stand the test of time. Starting with a news article of the day he will draw up something witty or nasty that will offend someone or somebody. However that doesn’t mean that being offensive is the key to an art piece. Sometimes it is to lighten a dark situation or humanise an event that is ridiculously stupid.

Steven has contributed his illustrations to such magazines as The Australian (young) Labor party magazine ‘Beacon’ and hopes to work free lance and contribute his illustrations to various forms of print or digital media.

I like to use my art to escape into a mythical universe where crazy creatures rule their world and one that is drastically different to the reality in which I live in. I find it is a much more exciting colourful universe - one where I can make the rules and often there are no rules and things are very topsy turvy. It is a world that I would like to live in.

Tom Verhoef’s work is inspired by dreams and the subconscious. It is of course not always apparent, but he believes these two things intertwine into absolutely everything.
He usually uses slightly more saturated, bright and vibrant colours than are seen in reality. Starting with just a loose meaning or story, he hopes the personal story behind his artwork doesn’t reflect the viewer’s interpretation, because everyone should and does interpret the material world differently.

Illustre 2010 is an art exhibition for NMIT TAFE 2nd year Illustration students.

The exhibition is planned, funded and set up entirely by the students.

We will have some great work displayed for sale, on the 8th November until the 24th of November at Chapel off Chapel.
