Vikings Invade Higgins Armory Museum - July 12, 2009

I just got information about a fun event that will be taking place at Higgins Armory Museum. The Vikings will invade with presentations, activities and crafts for the kids.
Here's the details:

Brandish a Sword, Create a Shield During Day-Long Event
Brandishing swords, shields, and broadaxes, the most famous raiders of medieval Europe, the Vikings, invade the Higgins Armory Museum on Saturday, July 18. This modern-day Viking Invasion features workshops, demonstrations, lectures and arts and crafts about this fascinating group of explorers, warriors, and merchants who colonized much of Europe from the late eighth to the early eleventh century. Dr. William R. Short, an author and scholar on the arms and combat techniques of the Vikings, will demonstrate Viking battle techniques and afterwards sign copies of his new book, Viking Weapons and Combat Techniques. “People like learning about Vikings, particularly kids,” says Short, who has studied medieval Icelandic literature, primarily the Sagas of Icelanders, and regularly demonstrates Viking combat techniques at the Higgins. “Their stories are exciting and there’s a bit of a fantasy element. But what’s most surprising to audiences (who watch our combat demonstrations) is how intensely they fought in combat.”

Short’s book provides insight into Viking history and culture as well as the importance of weaponry to their society and the Vikings’ impact on Europe through trade and expeditions. Short and members of the Higgins Armory Sword Guild will demonstrate Viking warrior combat skills during Vikings in Arms!, at 12:45 and 2:45 pm in the Higgins’ Sword Guild training room. Other programs include:

Axe, Sword and Shield!
Workshop, $10 per person
1pm, 3pm
Learn the skills that made the Vikings the most feared warriors in Europe. This one-hour hands-on workshop features the combat skills and battle tactics of the Vikings. Participants handle a sword and shield, a spear, and the fearsome Viking axe. Workshop open to ages 14 and up, or age 10 if accompanied by a participating parent. Space limited. Women in Viking Times

Viking women were the most respected women of their time. Dr. William Short puts down his weapons to discuss the feminine side of Viking life, how Viking families lived, and the role of women in Viking society.

Dr. William Short discusses the culture, daily life, and military equipment of this legendary and fearsome society. Afterwards, Short signs copies of Viking Weapons and Combat Technique. This exciting new book explores the history of the arms, armor, and individual fighting strategies of medieval Europe's most feared warriors. We went out to the Summer Nationals yesterday (Saturday). This year did not disappoint! The weather was perfect; sunny with a cool breeze. It looks like today will also be perfect weather out there. The crowds were great yesterday. A lot of people were clearing out of my way so I could get pictures - not necessary but MUCH appreciated! The cars are spectacular this year! Well worth the $12 to get into Greenhill Park.

I just found out that some horrible person killed one of the precious baby swans from Institute Park. I am sick.

I hope that if anyone hears anything about who may have done this that they come forward. A person who could do such a thing to a defenseless baby bird needs some serious help.

Here's what I know about Kate - she is always out at every event. I know if I go out, I'm going to see her. She's at the fun events and she's at the serious ones. She's there helping when people need help and she's there cheering when it's time to celebrate. She's always been a very caring person who listens and 'gets it' and works hard to do good. She's approachable; not arrogant or condescending -- two things that are pretty bad in a leader. If a person thinks they are better than others it's very unlikely that they will address the real needs of people. Just my opinion and observation. That's all I got.

Guerrilla Gardening - UPDATE

The first mission was a success - here's part two:

UPDATE! (Cue theme from Mission Impossible) Seed bombs are assembled and waiting to be hurled! Bombers can collect their projectiles at Sprout, Friday May 1st, between 7:30 - 8:00pm. We'll form groups then and split up to cover more areas. We did some brainstorming about where to throw them and have a decent list that covers a variety of spots in the city. Muddy hands make light work!

Look how pretty that Sunflower is. Do you know a nasty field or lot that could use a few of these to brighten things up and make it look better? Sprout has the answer, Read her message below.

Sprout will be doing some Guerrilla Gardening, fighting a war against ugly, neglected public spaces. April 30, 7pm @ Sprout - details in her Worcesterite post (borrowed and displayed below)

Guerrilla Gardening is fighting "the war against neglect and scarcity of public space as a place to grow things, be they beautiful, tasty (or both!)"

The Guerrilla Gardening movement celebrates spring with International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day with the covert planting of sunflower seeds and other hardy annuals in the urban jungle on May 1st. This started in Belgium in 2007 and is quickly spreading!

How can we make this happen in Worcester MA?! Any one out there up for making seed bombs and greening an otherwise neglected corner of the city? I'll buy the seeds and soil! I'm thinking Chandler St. could use the boost, any where else come to mind??!! Down on Madison where all the weeds grow by the RR bridge? University Park area?

If there's interest, this is what I'm thinking:

Thursday, 30 April, 7:00 - seed bomb making and plan of attack formulating at Sprout (118A June St. Worc.). I'll provide the soil and seeds if you don't mind getting dirt under your nails.

Friday, 1 May - seed bomb distribution, meet at where ever we decided our mission lies, 8:00?

Any other thoughts, suggestions? I'm really hoping we can make even a small corner of the city a little brighter with sunflowers unexpectedly popping up in August!

Massachusetts Producers to Premiere Award Winning Film at Showcase Cinema
On May, 15th local producers Doug Lloyd, Georgia Menides, and Andrea Ajemian will premiere their edgy, coming of age, independent drama Still Green at Showcase Cinema North in Worcester, MA, where it will run from May 15th to May 21st. Developed in Worcester, Still Green won Best Narrative Feature at the New England Film/Video Festival, Spirit of Independence- Best Ensemble Cast at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, and was rated Best Film Not Yet Released by popular Boston film critic TC Kirkham (Popcorn and Roses). Still Green recently sold to Osiris Entertainment and will be released on DVD and blue ray later this year. Osiris just made headlines in Variety after acquiring Westlake Entertainment's library of more than 400 films, and Nelson Madison Films for an additional 40 titles.

Often described as “The Big Chill for teenagers,” Still Green follows the lives of a group of high school graduates who rent a beach house, along the gulf coast of Florida, the summer before college. An accident in the ocean tests their friendship, and the teens respond in a way some people find disturbing and others see as a beautiful act of loyalty.

Starring Sarah Jones (Big Love, The Riches), Ryan Kelley (Mean Creek, Prayers for Bobby), Noah Segan (Brick, What We Do is Secret), and Douglas Spain (Band of Brothers, But I’m a Cheerleader), the film has been called “Powerful and Poignant” –Larry Richman (pronetworks.org), “haunting and Hypnotic” – Adam Moore – (former consultant with Miramax Pictures), and “A film with the dramatic strength of a theatrical play with the cinematography and music of a blockbuster film” – Markdoty.com.

Director Jon Artigo’s former award winning film, Freedom Park was shot entirely in Massachusetts ran successfully in local theaters in 2004. Last summer, Artigo and Ajemian produced the feature length comedy We Got the Beat, (also set and filmed in Worcester), currently in post-production.

Writer Georgia Menides is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and was a student at Doherty Memorial High School. The film was inspired by experiences with her high school friends. Georgia’s screenplays have won awards at the Hamptons International Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival. Producer Doug Lloyd is a graduate of Clark University.

A wide range of promotional events will accompany the film’s release such as a premiere after party and a concert from artists on the film’s soundtrack (including platinum recording artist Kaz Gamble). Following the Worcester screenings, Still Green will screen at Coolidge Corner Theatre in Boston on Wednesday May 27th and Thursday May 28th at 7:00 pm. Snowflake: Film To Be Shot In Worcester

Worcester screenwriter and producer, Kristen Lucas, and her team are set to begin pre-production this summer on their project, "Snowflake". Shooting will be done in and around Worcester in the early fall.

"Snowflake" is a full-length feature written by Lucas while she was a student at Emerson College. It's the story of Jesse Ashton, a 20-year-old white female rapper trying to transcend barriers of both race and gender as she competes in the gritty urban hip-hop scene.

Kristen Lucas' production company, Goldilocks Productions, has competed twice in the Providence leg of the 48-Hour Film Challenge and once in the National Film Challenge, resulting in two awards. The experience also helped her form important connections with film industry professionals. It's a network she can draw upon as she begins this huge project.

Making a film is expensive and Goldilocks Productions has been hard at work getting support. On Saturday, Jan. 24, they held a fundraiser/party at the OurTvSpace Studios in Sturbridge, MA. The producers of Snowflake, Goldilocks Productions - will be shooting a trailer in Worcester and they need support / Extras. This is another opportunity to support the growing local film industry. The local team behind the upcoming feature film “Snowflake” will be generating interest in the production by shooting an advance "teaser" trailer at a Worcester nightclub on Saturday, April 25th.

The location for the two-day shoot is Worcester’s premier nightspot, Mansion House, situated above the Irish Times Pub at 244 Main Street. Formerly REHAB, which won “best nightclub” honors three years running, the club has been given a complete overhaul with a state-of-the-art vibe that immediately appealed to the film’s producers, Goldilocks Productions.

Among the filmmakers behind “Snowflake” are producers Kristen Lucas and Amy Devlin of Goldilocks Productions, editor and director Noah Lydiard, co-writer Kyle Perzanoski, Director of Photography Dan Rosario and music supervisor Keith “Klep” Napier. As she did with previous Goldilocks productions such as the locally-produced short film “Third Date,” Lucas is enlisting area businesses and investors interested in independent film and helping “Snowflake” come to the screen. In addition to the use of Mansion House, for example, Colonel Boothe, co-owner of Muncheez Pizza (www.muncheezpizzeria.com) in Tatnuck Square, is donating food for the cast and crew and the Boston fashion design company, Bless by Bless Couture (www.blessbybless.com), is donating wardrobe to the project that will be featured in the teaser trailer. The production is looking for support from other local businesses for food, wardrobe, props, and any other items that would come in handy over the two-day shoot.

Higgins Celebrates Armor In Pop Culture - April events schedule

The April program schedule for Higgins is here; just in time for April vacations.
This month they are celebrating Armor in Pop Culture. Highlights include 'Star Wars Day', an overnight Gaming Knight, Spring BeerFest, and a superhero comic workshop by local comic book artists Andy Fish and Veronica Hebard.

The Higgins Armory Museum is located at 100 Barber Avenue; 508/853-6015.
Admission: $9, adults; $7, children ages 6-16; $8, seniors, age 60+; free, children 5 and under, and members.

School Vacation Week Apr. 20-24
This April vacation week, travel to worlds limited only by the imagination. Meet knights in shining armor, learn about princesses in castles and marvel at the antics of fire-breathing dragons. Live demonstrations, story-telling, and hands-on activities daily, including “Make Your Own Shield” workshop ($5 per project).

Shazam!
From Wonder Woman’s indestructible gauntlets to Magnetos’ psionic defense helmet, armor has long been part of the comic book heroes’ persona. Inspired by armor throughout the Higgins’ collection, kids create a superhero during this workshop taught by Andy Fish and Veronica Hebard of undercoverfish.com. All materials provided.

Gaming Knight

$12 for people in costume
Gamers of all ages score knight moves during this overnight at the Higgins. Games of all kinds - board games, collectible games, miniature games, role-playing games and more – are available to play. Favorites include Settlers of Catan, Munchkin, Carcassonne, Axis and Allies, Diplomacy, Killer Bunnies, Guillotine, and more. Visitors can bring their own to share. Munchies and soda provided.

Spring BeerFest
Sat., Apr. 25 6 – 9 pm
Advance tickets: $35 ($25 for members).
Tickets at door: $45.
Designated drivers $5.

Star Wars Day

More than 30 years ago, American movie audiences were introduced to Star Wars, the epic saga of good vs. evil set in “a galaxy far, far away.” Closer to home, the Higgins’ hosts the brave members of the Rebellion as well as their combatants, the storm troopers of Emperor Sidious’ 501st Legion. A Star Wars scavenger hunt is among the activities as well as a discussion about the troops’ galactic armor, weaponry, and comparisons to 16th century Gothic knights.

Film: The Clone Wars

This animated Star Wars adventure is set between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The Clone Wars are raging and when Jabba the Hutt's son is taken by a group of renegades, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi depart in search of answers, meeting such villans as Count Dooku, General Grievous, and Asajj Ventress. Rated PG. 90 minutes.

Siege the Day: Trebuchet Building Contest
Sat., May 2, 10:00 am
$25 youth/school team; $50 adult team.
Free to watch!
A medieval siege machine – similar to a catapult – trebuchets destroyed castle walls by hurling large stones. Grab some friends to design and build a trebuchet here at the Higgins. The subtle skills of attack, parry, and grapple are brought alive by Higgins Armory Sword Guild as they demonstrate the knightly arts in a recreation of a medieval combat school.

This interactive program covers the history of armor, from its evolution as mail to plate armor to its disappearance, then modern reappearance on the battlefield. Volunteers from the audience may help with the demonstration.

14th Century Knight: Armor in Transition

Why did knights change from using mail armor to plate? Why did it take nearly 150 years? These are just some of the questions answered in this program focusing on the evolution of knightly armor.

Roman Auxiliary Soldiers

A presentation showing a rarely heard aspect of the Roman military: Auxiliary soldiers. Recruited from all corners of the Roman Empire, these non-citizen soldiers were similarly trained and equipped like the Legions, providing military support to the Legions on the battlefield, as well as various other tasks such as border patrol, armed escort, and policing duties.

Stone Soup damaged by fire - Need community support.

If you didn't see the news yesterday, Stone Soup was heavily damaged by a fire. They need the support of the community to re-build and recover

Worcester Earn-A-Bike is one of the programs affected by the fire. I thought I'd post this WorcesterLove episode to help people that may not know what Stone Soup is, understand what this place means to the community.

From Matt Feinstein, Coordinator of the Worcester Roots Project:

Our 4 King Street building, home to Worcester's beloved arts, activism, and community center, was damaged by a fire late Thursday, March 26. The fire began in the basement--the cause is as yet unknown. No one was injured.
We are committed to continuing and rebuilding at 4 King Street. The building is currently unusable, but organizations will continue their important social and environmental justice work thanks to the generous support of dozens of other community groups.
Stone Soup needs your help to rebuild. We are asking for donations of time, money, and other items. For information about specific needs, see http://stonesoupworcester.org.
