ZOO: a movie about death by horse sex on youtube.

If slow and steady wins the race, then consider ZOO draped in laurels in the winners circle.

ZOO is a movie told through interviews with the involved parties in a recent tragic event that changed the laws in Washington state regarding bestiality. The focus is on the individuals actually involved with the horses and interviews with those whose interactions were purely human are absent. The audio of the interviews is played with dramatic scoring while re-enactments of the events leading to and following the event are performed. The movie is available for free on YouTube in seven parts.

The movie begins slowly and mysteriously in part one. Slowly, and I mean S-L-O-W-L-Y the mystery is lifted as the interviewees attempt to explain themselves and the reenactment unfolds in shadows. You can tell that there are a lot of very difficult to resolve viewpoints about just about all of the actions undertaken in the movie. After all the waiting, you see the chilling results of the event for both man and beast.

The slow pace of the movie reminds me of reading a book, and the multiple parts made it easy to stop watching and take a break when necessary: I liked that. The cinematography and lighting of the reenactments was wonderfully well suited to the subject matter and story. The score was beautiful and did not detract from the movie.

ZOO won critical acclaim at Sundance film festival. Critics called it lyrical, while I felt that the YouTube viewing I enjoyed was less musical and more book-like. The choice to avoid the human and focus on the animal is a choice that definitely gives this movie some of it's unique flavor and gives the ending some of it's emotional oomph.

The interviewees argue that they are engaging the animals consensually but my views on bestiality have not changed with the viewing of ZOO. I have strong feelings on the subject of consent whether it be for humans or for animals. I do not think that a confined animal can give consent, just as a child that relies on it's parent cannot.

After watching ZOO I do not feel like I understand anything surrounding this event any more than I did before. I don't feel like I understand the psychology of these zoophiles any more. I have however, once again been made to feel that our society and our humanity is lacking in some way to drive humans to these kinds of activities and justifications.

Seriously Folks, it's a 29 page document, it's like triple spaced size 16 font. If you don't read this before you rent in Hawaii, you're probably gonna get screwed!

I didn't read it till I was already in trouble and I regretted it. The rights for renters in Hawaii are good! The word of the law is in your favor.

Dragon's Eye Community decided to slaughter a steer for one of their kid's 16th birthdays. One of our neighbor's also slaughtered a pig... not kosher, I know. It was a blood fest. I shot a ton of pictures, got shoulder deep in gore and ended up getting the tongue! Also of note, Giant Jackfruit and cute dogs.

Pseudocolus Fusiformis (Colus Fusiformis/Pseudocolus javanicus) This amazing fungus, found in an organic garden in Opihikao Hawaii. Although ^ Hemmes DE, Desjardin D. {(2002). Mushrooms of Hawai'i: An Identification Guide. Berkeley, California: Ten Speed Press. p. 40. ISBN 1-58008-339-0. } describes this mushroom as smelling of fresh pig manure, I found it to smell like ripe seafood. I wonder if this smell could be attributed to the fish emulsion used in the garden's soil or the proximity to the ocean? (This garden is across the street from the ocean and the spray sometimes mists up to the garden in question.)

Work Trade in Hawaii. Part 1

Work Trade in Hawaii:

An agreement where a property owner solicits work in exchange for housing, usually on a property described as a farm. These agreements sometimes also include use of tools and facilities, food harvested from the land and maybe even instruction.

A work-trade agreement might seem like a good idea in today's world of seeming economic collapse in that no one has to rely on currency and the system it represents.

Work-trade would seem to represent an opportunity to build our own economies based on the value of labor and the right of all people to have food and shelter.

Farmers; having an abundance of land and food; offering their bounty in exchange for the labor they need to make their land productive.

Workers; needing basic food and shelter and having the ability to provide the necessary labor that a farm needs to support itself.

It would seem the perfect place to begin developing a new society.

My experiences have not been positive and in the next few blog posts I'll attempt to outline my observations, concerns and recommendations on work-trade in Hawaii.

As always I'd love to hear of other people's experiences as well. please comment or if you'd rather be more private about it send me an email. I'm sure we all have a lot to bitch about on this topic!

Critical Mass Murderer...

Almost...

Critical Mass is a bicycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The ride was originally founded in 1992 in San Francisco. The inspiration behind the ride was to create social space via the bicycle. The purpose of Critical Mass is not usually formalized beyond the direct action of meeting at a set location and time and traveling as a group through city or town streets on bikes. (From Wikipedia)

I've been involved in quite a few critical mass rides here in Chicago. I've seen people being assholes on all sides of the ride. Bike riders being assholes and splashing pedestrians, cars pushing into the mass and maneuvering dangerously and enough verbal disputes to fill a lifetime.

But I have never seen anything like this...

@ 49 seconds a car drives through the entire mass from back to front tossing cyclists like bowling pins.

This occurred in Porto Alegre Brazil. Let's hope something like this never happens again.

I just completed my second bicycle ride around Chicago for Miguel delValle. It's great to see and meet so many people who support delValle. You don't see anyone else on the street volunteering for a candidate out of their desire for a better Chicago. Sure you see dudes paid to drive big vans of Chico signs around to litter the city. Yeah you get as many paid ads for Rahm Emanuel as all of his money can buy (alot).

But-

Miguel delValle has passionate people working together to support him without receiving a dime... just because they believe in him. Here is an awesome video made by another concerned citizen of Chicago for delValle.

This Tuesday the 22nd of February is our last chance to change the course of Chicago politics for the next 20 years! Please inform yourself.

Review of Rahm Emanuel's interview on NPR.

This is my recap of the WBEZ Chicago public radio interview of Rahm Emanuel.

I cut through the b.s. and only cover the interviewer's questions and anything that Rahm says that is actually answering the question in some way. It's all paraphrased and all quotations are merely for emphasis.

In addition my own commentary, I'll put links in the text that help illustrate points that I think are important.

Interviewer: Are you viewed as an outsider? Is there any strength in being an outsider in this election?
Rahm:....(this is so awkward as to sound edited out... is it?)

So this is a funny one. He not only had some shady residency issues but most of his campaign funds (see: money paid to influence city policy) come from outside of Chicago. About 4million from in Chicago and over 9million from outside Chicago. Probably not so great to elect a guy whom is bankrolled by interests other than our own.

I: What do you want to change if elected mayor?
R:
1.Save 50 million dollars by installing a comprehensive wellness plan
2.save 40 million by centralizing procurements
3.make 20 million by charging non-profits for water
4.Rahm will not accept a pension.

So, save $115 million dollars? The budget shortfall is estimated at $600 million.

I: How will you change pension benefits?
R:
1.going to preserve pensions
2.not going to increase taxes to do it.
3.wait... he's now "going to try" and "make it his goal" to preserve pensions.
4. He's going to be honest about the problem.
(He states that the situation is: we raise taxes or pensions go bankrupt.)

Sounded strong out of the gate, "will not raise taxes, will save pensions" but quickly changed his promise to a pledge to be honest about the problem and to "make it his goal" to preserve pensions, he is still not going to raise taxes. Well, he states the problem is this: raise taxes or pensions go bankrupt. Very honest Rahm, you just let us know it is your plan to be honest as you force city pensions into bankruptcy by refusing to raise taxes.

I: Where do you get more pension money?
R: Collective bargaining.

I don't really understand how this will make money to pay pensions. If anything, collective bargaining means that you do not expect to respect the contract these workers have with the city and will try to make people give up their pensions to make the debt the city owns smaller. It's good Rahm is upfront about this, but isn't he all about honesty? Is it honest to renege on contracts? NO!

I: Do you plan to roll-back sales tax? Increase service tax?
R:
1.Cutting Employee head tax.
2. Reform natural gas tax
3. Cut 20% from sales tax.
4. He's gonna be level and honest with people.

He answered half of that. +.5!

I: How do you define public servant?
R: Anyone who gets a paycheck from the city. A public servant is beholden to taxpayers.

OK! Finally we are gonna get city workers who are considerate and beholden to citizens!

I: Who do you expect to be viewed as a public servant?
R: Mayor, councilmen, appointees, middle management. (He mentions police, firemen and teachers with a compliment but in such a way as not to actually call them public servants.) He's gonna put a two year ban on public servants becoming lobbyists to the city after they leave city jobs.

Maybe not... don't wanna piss off those entitled cops and firemen by calling them public servants before an election. Thank God no one put a two year ban on you when you jumped from government to business to make millions. Nice of you to stop others from following your corrupt path to wealth.

I: Why do you want to be mayor of Chicago?
R:
1. Chicago needs a mayor like me.
2. Wants to make a Chicago that his kids will be proud of.

Well, there's a little problem here. Chicago gets to decide for itself who it wants as mayor and a lot of it has decided that person is not you. I wonder what kind of Chicago his kids would be proud of? His father, publicly known as a member of a terrorist organization, the rest of his family seeming like neoconservatives, and Rahm himself being a pretty rude, crude, asshole of a dude make me feel like I don't want to live in a city that anyone in his family would be proud of let alone his children, influenced by all of them.

I: What is one tangible thing you can do to make things better for the people of Chicago?
R:
1. Reform City gov. to balance budget.
2. Make schools where people are confident to send their kids.
3. Bring safety to streets.

1.The only reforms Rahm has ever made were to reform companies, policies and laws to improve opportunities, for his friends, family, business associates and himself, for making money at the expense of others.

2. He doesn't know anything, nor care anything about Chicago's public schools (here he is lying in favor of charter schools). His family and his community go to private schools.
3. Bring safety to the streets? What about safety in civil service? This guy is well known for being a bully, using the kind of tactics that would be a pretty bad rolemodel for improving general peacefulness.

It's already time to celebrate for Miguel delValle the reform candidate for Chicago. Rolling his plans into action for weeding out corruption, creating more jobs, strengthening public schools and creating a transparent city government that is truly by the people and for the people, Miguel delValle will be a very busy man come next week.

His opponent Rahm Emanuel will not be so lucky, spending time in a different big government building than he had planned. While Miguel and the entire city of Chicago celebrate the end of the machine, Emanuel will almost certainly be answering for recently released documents linking him to corruption on all levels of city, state, national and international politics.

One political observer opined:
"It's amazing that people could overlook how the 'fundraiser in chief' was leapfrogging from government and business and back, making obscene amounts of money from corruption and controversy riddled groups."
"He seemed to be a real carpetbagger, jumping from one opportunity from the next, without any care for who he hurt."
He continued:
"I'm just glad Chicago is smart enough and tough enough to see through all his b.s."

Indeed the city is breathing a sigh of relief as early polls had placed Rahm in the lead of the Chicago elections. Now artists in the city are relaxing by imagining what hairstyles Rahm might be getting to fit in better with his new room-mate.

There is still the possibility for a runoff election between delValle and another candidate, but with the initial election in the bag for Miguel delValle, he can continue making the city a better place to live in.

If only I had the money to buy the media. This is what the headlines and print would say.

Some musings on the traditional Chicago mayoral style of dealing with the media.

I visited my parents in Northwest Indiana this weekend and in their newspapers it was already spelled out that Rahm had won. He was being called future mayor of Chicago, etc...

All I can do is speak my voice, spread the word, wave a sign and yell my candidates name with the knowledge that he is the best for this city. His name is Miguel delValle and here are some youtube videos of me riding my bike, waving his sign and yelling slogans in his support.

Some things I recently learned and why they have strengthened my desire not to see Rahm or Chico as our mayor:
How the Chicago political machine works.

There is no term limit for mayor in Chicago.
Once in place a machine sponsored mayor has the opportunity to sell city favors for votes for future elections.
The machine is so powerfully in place and owns so much of Illinois politics that the only crooked politicians you will see getting busted are fall guys. (ROD BLAGOJEVICH)
If a machine candidate (Rahm or Chico) are put into place they are mayor for 20 years (for life basically).
They continue with the patronage, pay to play etc... that has unfairly dipped into our tax dollars for years.
This has been documented over and over and over again.
This government and the current mayor is stealing from you!

Why do I feel that the citizens of Chicago should vote for Miguel delValle?
He has proven again and again as a non-machine member of Chicago politics that he is strong.
Strong enough to hold positions of considerable power without abusing them.
Strong enough to be surrounded by crooks in a system designed by and for crooks without becoming one.

Even if he is not the candidate that fulfills all your desires, he will only stay our mayor if we want him to.

If you let Rahm or Chico get elected he just has to fulfill the same favors using your money to keep the stranglehold on the Chicago city hall that Daley had.

Emanuel as machine leader.

Rahm has pretty clearly proven he doesn't care about the American public by his involvement with the banking failure.
Rahm has very clearly proven he will do whatever he wants by the bullying he does for the highest bidder on capitol hill.

This shouldn't be about looks, or presidential endorsements.
This is about the future of this city.

Imagine what just one term with a reformer could do to clean up the crooked systems in our city.
If you don't like delValle after one term he will never sell our city for votes so we can easily vote in someone else.

You know it won't be Rahm, cause by then he'll have moved on to the next victim.

Clinton's ship started sinking and Rahm jumped to the banks.
The banks went belly up and Rahm jumped to Obama.
Obama ain't doing too great and the man who is his chief of staff is about to jump ship to ruin our great city.

Let's stop this madness here and we can all say we "called it" when he sinks and ditches another campaign/industry/city.

How (and why) those Rogers Park high schoolers made their anti-Rahm/pro-Miguel video

Above is the link to WBEZ (Chicago public radio) article on a group of high-school students who made a campaign video for Miguel del Valle that attacks Rahm Emanuel. If you've read any of my recent posts, you'll know that I am a huge supporter of bashing Rahm Emanuel. I am also a non-voting supporter of Miguel del Valle, doing my best to convince others to vote their conscience with him. These students, like me, are not directly associated with the campaign, receiving no support, guidance or recognition for their work. I am a citizen whom unexpectedly became educated about the Chicago Mayoral campaign because of the residency issues surrounding Rahm Emanuel.

Before he was dropped from the ballot I was convinced he was the only choice for mayor, associated him with positive change because of his appointment with Obama and would have supported him in conversation because I knew no better. While the court battles about Rahm's residency went on I read the Wikipedia article about him and found a whole lot that I dislike. I searched more articles and videos and thanks to the wonder of the internet I put together a much different understanding of Rahm Emanuel than what the traditional media sources would have you think.

As far as my support for delValle goes, I educated myself on all of the other mayoral candidates and found his message to be the most in line with my ideal political leader (no personal/financial/political/obligatory greed).
I am proud to finally be activated as a political individual. I am sad I am not registered to vote but will be ready next election to support any candidate with a conscience and the ethical standards to truly fulfill my political ideal. Until then I can only affect this election by educating, protesting, uncovering and motivating.

My dining out rules: Inspired by Yelp!

People on Yelp are all complaining about stupid stuff like properly holding forks and phone etiquette when making reservations. I say that if you really want to show your class and make a good impression on your fellow diners, you should follow:

MY 21 RULES FOR EATING OUT.

1. If you notice that your fingernails are too long please cut them at the table. Most servers will give you clippers if you ask.

2. Always mix all left overs and condiments in a cup. It aids their safe disposal.

3. Most fine restaurants give you two napkins, one to loudly blow your nose with and the other to spit food into from time to time.

4. If you do have a loud child, make sure you are louder when you scream for it to be quiet.

5. Children are meant to be seen (getting violently slapped and shaken) not heard. Let the other diners know who's boss.

6. You have the right as a parent to decide when your child can be served alcohol. If the server refuses to respect your authority over your children then rules four and five now apply to the server.

7. Just as any good restaurant employee would do: do not pass gas at your table; aerosolizing digestion is a social event and should be celebrated while walking through the dining room.(see crop-dusting)

8. Snapping fingers is out: Shaking ice in glass is in.

9. Religious pamphlets and foreign currency are as good as gold to waiters. When leaving aforementioned items as tips feel free to take 10% off your total bill.

10. If you vomit. Do not stop eating. No-one else noticed.

11. If your cell phone rings: do not answer. Act as though you are in a movie theater and just let it ring so that no-one knows it is yours.

12. Hundreds of people die each year in horrible accidents involving un-lubricated toilet seats. Make sure you hover and spray if you are a woman and leave the seat down if you are a man.

13. A real foodie can judge the quality of a meal by interpreting the feces of a diner. Give everyone a chance to practice their eating out IQ by leaving your brown; un-flushed down.

14. Medium rare just sounds cool right>? Always order your meat this way even though you only eat meat well done. It will allow you to spark interesting conversation with your waiter when you return it and as a bonus, the kitchen staff will appreciate the server allowing them to re-cook the dish you cleverly mis-ordered.

15. Servers work for tips, strippers also work for tips. There are no bouncers in restaurants, you can put your hands where you want.

16. Once a host sits you in a table; it is yours. Use it as a home base for the day. (Hint: if the restaurant has a wait and you are leaving; help another party, the host staff and your pocketbook by seating the highest bidder in the table you vacate.)

17. Restaurant employees have access to all the food in the kitchen, always try to coerce a server to steal food for you before you agree to the antiquated system of paying for it.

18. Servers need to rely on a sharp memory to keep their orders straight. Make sure everyone at your table has the soups, side options, dressings, specials, beer list, etc... repeated for every individual. Practice makes perfect.

19. Race is an important issue when it comes to dining. If your server does not match your skin color: demand to speak to the manager as curtly as possible. Hopefully the problem will be rectified and your apps will be comped.
