August is here in all it's glorious abundance. Every year we plant a garden and the spend much time preserving all the excess to enjoy over the winter. Although we were late in planting this year as we were away for most of May, with the rain we had earlier in the season everything grew quickly and is now producing lots of goodies for us. This morning we harvested the garlic and have it drying before we get more expected rains, and we have been eating chard, greens, beets, carrots, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, peppers, cilantro and basil every night. How wonderful it is to go into the garden and come back with an arm load of fresh veggies to plan a meal around... The tomatoes and cole crops promise to start yielding shortly as well, and the apple trees show lots of promise. And although freezing and drying is a lot of work it is such a treat to have our own vegetables available to enjoy during the winter!

black plastic to stay ahead of the weeds I do spend every day weeding out the row crops and these greens get fed back to the goats. Each day brings new discoveries and treats and spending even a few minutes in the garden brings peace and relaxation.

In today's hectic world and the reports of GMO labeling, bio security and out breaks of E coli, having at least a little control over one's food supply gives a great sense of satisfaction, brings us closer to the natural world and is just plain healthier, not just for us but for the environment as well. Even if we can't grow much it is super easy to grow a few herbs in pots to spice up our meals, and if you don't have room for an actual garden, plants like tomatoes and peppers do well in containers. Instead of buying produce from the grocery stores that may have been shipped thousand of miles and treated with preservatives and who knows what else, try supporting your local farmers markets and farm stands as much as you can. CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) are a great way to get fresh vegetables and support the farmers in your community.
While I don't grow corn I always buy it from my favorite farm stand and freeze enough for winter. Berries are super easy to freeze, and I love drying cherry tomatoes and using them in pastas later. Every year as I plan the garden I try new varieties of plants and flowers and am always richly rewarded, not just with the final fruits from tiny seeds but just from the process and the beauty of it.

England in Spring Time

In May we were lucky enough to travel to England and Wales for a couple of weeks of relaxation, exploration and of course ponies! While the British Isles are known for nine breeds (Connemara, Dales, Fell, Exmoor, Dartmoor, Welsh, Highland, New Forest and Shetland) of Mountain and Moorland ponies I admit the ancient and primitive Exmoor is my favorite, and it was a pleasure to return for our fourth visit to this beautiful part of the world.

We rented a lovely, peaceful and comfortable cottage on Exmoor on a working sheep farm that had amazing views and was also conveniently situated on the moors. While the weather was changeable from bright sun to driving rain (in a matter of minutes) and also quite cool, spring was definitely well underway with new foals, lambs and calves in evidence everywhere and flowers blooming profusely. On the first weekend we were lucky enough to have the Golden Horseshoe ride come right by our cottage and of course I couldn't resist grabbing my camera to get some shots of the riders. While on Exmoor we were lucky enough to hear our friend Tracey Elliot-Reep speak in Simonsbath on her long distance horseback rides and adventures around the world. I have known Tracey for some years now and her life is exciting and fascinating, and she is also a huge advocate for the native ponies on Dartmoor, which is also her home base.

After we left Exmoor we toured around the southwest of England and stopped at the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth and spent a couple of days on Dartmoor as well.Then we travelled back to

Manchester to catch our flight home and enjoyed the Cotswolds and the Peaks district.
England is at its most charming in the spring, from the blooming gardens everywhere, expansive green landscapes with the iconic hedgerows and stone walls (and of course the impossibly narrow roads that aren't always so much fun!) and sheep grazing everywhere to the cream teas and friendly pubs England never disappoints!

The Traveling Photographer and California

One of the best AND worst parts of my job is the fact that I get to travel all over the world. I think if you are going to be a successful equine photographer you must have a love for travel and new places and experiences. We need to go to our subjects, they will rarely come to us. While I have some great subjects right here in my own back yard (literally!) I usually travel by plane every few months. There are certain hot spots in the world that every horse lover and photographer dreams of and I have been lucky enough to have been to a number of them, and still have quite a few left on my list that I know I will be seeing some day.
Flying is about the least favorite part of this job, but a necessary evil. The world and the USA are just too big to drive to certain destinations so for me I don't have any other option. Flying can be frustrating and tiring and to me I always feel like I have lost a day of my life spent in airports and flying. Traveling with gear is also a challenge. The gear needs to stay with me so I need to pack light enough so that I don't exhaust myself lugging heavy gear around. Shipping gear ahead is an option. I have come to a compromise in my packing. Think Tank makes some four wheel rollers that are super easy to pull and will hold all the gear I need for a trip. It holds two bodies and two big lenses (80-400 and 70-200), one wide angle and one small prime lens as well as my 1.4 extender, batteries and cards. I pack through my chargers and monopod. Don't forget the monopod!

Anyway! Last fall I organized a workshop for my friend Scott Trees in Thousand Oaks, California. Thousand Oaks is definitely a hot bed of horse farms and horse activity and we were not disappointed. The beautiful Oak Trees, lovely barns and horses and of course the famous California light were all a treat for our group. We even were treated to Valentine a Poitou donkey and Kate a great stripey ze-donk along with a beautiful group of horses, riders and farms for us to explore and photograph. You can see more of my images here. This week I will be traveling west for our Hideout Winter Workshop and in March I will be heading south to Florida for a photographers meet up. And once again at the end of April I will head out to Colorado for the Sombrero Ranch Workshop and Great American Horse Drive, after ten years still a highlight of the year for me. Along the way I am looking forward to discovering some new favorite places!

Chincoteague

This week I will spend a little closer to home and begin with one of my very favorite places to visit, Chincoteague, Virginia. This island came to fame due to Marguerite Henry's writings and the annual pony swim is known around the world with the population of this small island swelling by tens of thousands of people who come to view the swim and see the auction. While I have attended this a couple of times I much prefer to visit the island during the off season. While it is always an added bonus to see the ponies out in the marshes there is so much more to see here. Chincoteague and Assateague are a popular destination for bird photographers, and is a rest stop on the Atlantic migration fly way, you will always be rewarded with bird activity here anytime you visit!. The marshes are always filled with many varieties of ducks, geese, swans, egrets and herons as well as more unusual migrating species.
During my trip to Chincoteague this year I also stopped at the Maryland end of Assateague near Berlin, Maryland and found many ponies sheltering in the trees away from the high winds at the time. I also spent some time in Cape May, NJ, where I was treated to many viewings of various raptors and Bombay Hook, DE for the huge flocks of snow geese (I was treated to my first snowy owl sighting here last year but was not as lucky this year) as well as a mesmerizing murmuration of blackbirds (truly a sight to see!) and Conowingo Dam for some Bald Eagle shots.

During my visit to Chincoteague we took a boat tour with Captain Carlton and were treated to a good morning on the water. We saw several bands of ponies as well as the lone stallion Copper Moose. This pretty mare was especially photogenic and she looks well prepared for winter! To see more photos from this trip please check this gallery. Babolna State Stud, Hungary

Upon leaving the Piber Stud we made our way to Hungary for a visit to the Hungarian State Stud. On the way we had lunch in the scenic village of Rust, known around the world for the storks who nest on the roof tops here. What a charming place this was and we were entertained by the storks as they flew in and out of their nests.

Crossing into Hungary we arrived at the Babolna Stud complete with the Imperial Hotel for us to spend the night and barns full of Arabians and Shagya Arabians with long and illustrious pedigrees and histories of horse breeding. Complete with a museum rich with the history of Hungarian horse breeding over the centuries and barns full of living and breathing treasures this is another European State Stud that works to preserve highly valued bloodlines. We were presented with several amazing Arabians and Shagya Arabians but the highlight of the visit for me was the team of five grey Shagya Arabian mares presented in harness in an intricately hand knotted harness. The perfectly manicured courtyard and the windows etched with horse figures were just a few of the amazingly intricate details that are all a tribute to the history and horses of the area.

World Class Driving in Slovenia

During our stay at the Lipica Stud in Slovenia we were treated to some world class driving. Teams from nine countries assembled to compete for three days of combined driving.
What a treat to see these magnificent horses competing in such a beautiful setting. It was a thrill to be able to photograph the marathon and have a ring side seat to this exciting phase of this driving event. The horsemanship and skill level as the teams hit the obstacles at full speed was truly apparent, as well as the training and trust of the horse and the communication of the whips to their teams.
One pair of Haflingers were disqualified after their rig was turned over after taking a corner too fast but they calmly stopped and waited for their carriage to be righted and all disasters were averted.
What a treat to spend a perfect June day enjoying some of the best competitive driving in the world, and even though many languages could be heard, everyone had gathered for their shared love of the horse, and the closeness of the community of drivers was apparent. Many of these drivers and teams compete at the highest levels and we wish them lots of luck!

Piber Stud, Austria

I am not ashamed to say I felt a little misty eyed when our week's stay at he Lipica Stud drew to an end and it was time to say goodbye. I know that Lipica will always have a special place in my heart with many fond memories of this magical place, and I know I will return some day.

We hit the road and were treated to a day driving through the beautiful Slovenian and Austrian countryside. In June everything was green and picture perfect and we took the time to explore some of the local attractions. Before we left Slovenia we enjoyed a visit to the Bee Museum in Radovljica. Bee culture is a part of the history here with wonderful folk art illustrating and preserving history and traditions painted on old beehives, making them true works of art.
The sky in Austria turned dark and dramatic and we traveled through many tunnels as we made our way to Austria with magnificent panoramas wherever we turned.

We spent a day at the Piber Stud, charmed by the fairy tale setting and richness of history. The Piber Stud produces all the stallions that go on to perform at the Spanish Riding School and we were treated to several young stallions playing at liberty and enjoyed time with the mares and foals. The Stud gives tours to thousands of visitors a year and also has many school groups who come and learn the history of the Lipizzan horse. The oldest resident was Neapolitano Nima I, a stallion foaled in 1979, a popular favorite at the Spanish Riding School for many years and now retired and living out his days in comfort at the place where he was born, a true testament to the program and the hardy and sound nature of this breed.

On the following day we drove up the side of a mountain for 45 minutes and arrived at the stud where the young stallions live for the first four years of their lives. After turn out in the morning the boys gallop up the side of a mountain and enjoy grazing in the fine Alpine meadows. While there is always a little "horsing around" to be expected, these young horses live peacefully together and are given the time and freedom to develop physically and socially.

One of my favorite stories from my Lipizzan trip was the story of the bell stallion. The stallions always have overseers with them, and they are closely monitored daily. While the herd of 50 or so young stallions runs free in the big pastures of the Alps from the time they are yearlings until the age of four, one stallion is assigned the job to wear the bell. While the bell is used for the caretakers to locate the herd in the fog, it is also a big responsibility for the stallion himself. The stallion must be a leader, and for the rest of the stallions to come to and follow with respect, especially the younger ones. Not all stallions are able to handle these responsibilities and other stallions have lost the privilege due to lack of leadership skills or being too aggressive. I saw this in action when I spent a morning with the herd, where the stallion would periodically check on the rest of the herd, it seemed to me he was well chosen for the task. So much that we can learn from these horses and the people who have preserved the breed for 500 years!

Lovely Lipica

With a visit to the Spanish Riding School in bustling Vienna under our belts, we made the trip to Slovenia and to the bucolic Lipica Stud, the cradle of the Lipizzaner horse. With a hotel right on the grounds and the stables just a short walk away, Lipica is friendly and welcoming to visitors and eager to share their treasure, the Lipizzan horse. Since 1580 Lipizzans have been bred here uninterrupted with the goal of preserving this special and iconic breed. With approximately 350 horses on the stud a visit here is truly a special experience. Foals are raised in groups and not weaned until they are six months old. Every day they run with their mothers to spend the day playing in the large, fertile pastures with big old Oak and Linden trees. People from not only around the world but also from the local area come to enjoy this scene. On a rainy day the air is fragrant with the scent of lavendar and linden, a truly sensory experience! The mild weather of the Karst region makes for ideal conditions to raise horses. Italy and Croatia are nearby, so day trips to explore the region make for fun adventures.

The foals are weaned at the age of six months and at that time they are divided by sexes and continue to grow and live in herds. the stallions move to a nearby stud and play and spar together until they are four years old. At four years they start their training, and all the horses are trained and evaluated before they are added to the breeding groups. Many stallions and geldings train and compete in dressage and in harness and are worked on a regular basis.

Lipica has performances open to the public on a daily basis, guided tours of the stud in several different languages and their beautiful museum and gift shop are not to be missed. They also host competitions of all sorts and we were treated to some world class driving while we were there. What a thrill to see the best the of the sport from around the world competing on a perfect day!

Vienna and the Spanish Riding School

This week we will take a trip across the ocean to enjoy the horses and history of the Lipizzan horse.

In June of 2014 I was lucky enough to make the trip to Europe for three weeks of Lipizzan immersion. My friend and fellow photographer Gabriele Boiselle arranged a tour to visit the Spanish Riding School, The Lipica Stud in Slovenia, the Piber Stud in Austria as well as the Hungarian State Stud in Babolna, Hungary. It was a dream come true and far exceeded my expectations!

We spent several days in Vienna enjoying the sights, the food and the people. The weather was delightful and we walked many miles enjoying this wonderful city. The rich history reflected in the architecture and statues everywhere as well as the horses and carriages took us back to an earlier time when horses were part of every day life.

We spent one morning enjoying a training session at the Spanish Riding School and were lucky enough to be granted permission to photograph. Several sessions of training took place, from younger horses starting with basic training to older stallions doing the more advanced maneuvers under saddle and on the long lines. After the training the stallions wait patiently to be given their sugar which is kept in a special pocket in each rider's jacket. We spent some time touring the stables with the amazing tack room and friendly stallions. I can understand why people from around the world make this place a destination.

It would be an understatement to say how special this experience was, to sit under the chandeliers in this world famous and beautiful riding hall watching the stallions being put through their paces! The tradition and pride that everyone feels for the horses is evident everywhere and was only reinforced as we continued our travels to the studs where this ancient breed is being preserved. The Hee Haw Gang

I love mules and donkeys, how could you not! They are such characters and so full of personality, and those long ears are just begging to be petted. Years ago we had a mule in our family named Dan who was a fixture here for many years until he died well into his thirties. After he died I knew more long ears would eventually come back into my life and it finally happened this past September when a long time client asked me if I would be interested in taking over the care of five donkeys, affectionately known as The Hee Haw Donkey Gang (yes, they have their own facebook page!). How could I say no!

The gang arrived in September and have been entertaining us ever since with their silly antics and (loud) and funny singing. The gang consists of two jennies, most likely sisters as they are very hard to tell apart, and they are called Minnie Pearl and Barbi Benton. Then there are three boys, their sons, and probably all by the same jack. They are called Junior Samples, Roy Clark and Buck Owens.

We have come to learn that donkeys are much different from horses in many of their behaviors and are fascinating to watch. I understand now why they are so valued for guarding herds of sheep and goats as they are always on alert and do not tolerate dogs in their pasture. They seem to be much more reactive and flighty than horses when out in pastures and there is not much that escapes their attention. They also seem to really love the more coarse vegetation such as blackberry brambles and tree branches that horses never touch. Their extra sensitive ears also make them react to music as you can see by this video from when my daughter was home and she and her friend Ryan serenaded them with violin and saxophone! We had a lot of laughs creating this video, and I am inspired to try it again. As you can see Roy is the outgoing on of the group!
The gang is a fun addition to our farm and also a good subject for me to photograph. Donkeys are always bound to bring you a smile!

The Delaware County Fair

Today I am going to share some images from an event that takes place in my own back yard. The Delaware County Fair is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the country and well known for it's farm shows and exhibits. Our little town gets visitors from around the world during fair week!

The fair barns are full of all types of livestock from rabbits and poultry to cows, goats, sheep and of course horses. My own daughters showed goats and chickens through the 4H program at the fair and it is a wonderful experience for kids to learn the responsibility and joys of animal husbandry. They are now grown up but I know fair week has a special place in their hearts with many special memories.

I return every year to the fair to see the horses that come from around the state to compete in the horse shows that run every day of the week. From miniature horses to team penning, gymkhana and barrel racing to draft horse hitches and pony pulling there is always something horse related going on.

Wild Horses of the American West

Last week I shared some of my galleries from my travels to the wild horse management areas in Colorado and Wyoming. While there is a lot of controversy surrounding the BLM and their management of the mustangs the facts are that many horses are being removed from public lands every year. Right now there are approximately 49,000 horses and burros on BLM land, but this does not account for horses on non BLM land: state land with wild and feral horses, Indian ponies that run wild on state land, domestic horses that have been turned loose and now are feral and often reproducing. It is a very complicated and emotional issue with no easy answers or solutions. Many of these horses do not have access to adequate forage or water, especially during times of drought.

The horses that come off the ranges in the BLM gathers are held in short and long term BLM holding facilities such as this one in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Ironically, the White Mountain HMA literally overlooks the Rock Springs holding facilities.
The long and short term holding facilities house around 50,000 wild horses and burros, with only a small percentage of these being successfully adopted.
In 2012 I visited the Palomino Valley Wild Horse and Burro facility north of Reno and wrote the following entry in my blog after my visit there.

The sad fact is that there are more horses in the holding facilities than there are people willing or qualified to adopt them. The BLM holds adoption events around the country as well as online adoptions, however I find that they are not well publicized and many potential adopters are sometimes not even aware of them. Raising awareness and getting the word out about adoptions and available horses is critical.

Horses that have been at three adoption events and have been passed over are then considered unadoptable and tagged as three strikes horses. These horses have special brands that designate them as three strikers and are then shipped to long term holding facilities in the mid west, or to sanctuaries that have room for them.

While the facts and the future look bleak for the wild horses there are many programs and people working to find solutions in both the care and management of the three strikers as well as making the horses more adoptable. The Mustang Heritage Foundation has launched a trainer incentive program (TIP) to bridge the gap between potential adopters and the mustangs in addition to the very popular Extreme Mustang Makeover gets horses into the public eye.

There are also many pages and groups on facebook such as The Modern Mustangers who network to get horses seen, adopted and shipped. Please check my link list below to visit the many sites and pages that are all working to help the horses.

In August of 2014 I spent a day with Steve Mantle at the Mantle Ranch in Wyoming. Steve is one of the original trainers to work with the BLM to gentle and train mustangs and get them adopted. I also visited the Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse EcoSanctuary in Wyoming where three hundred three strikes geldings live together on 4700 acres. There are also other sanctuaries such as Cimarron Sky Dog, Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, Return to Freedom to name a few. These places usually welcome visitors and can always benefit from donations to support their work.

The BLM also has a program that works with prison inmates to gentle and train mustangs.

From what I have seen during my travels and learned from the people who are on the front lines I feel that the best we can do to help the wild horses is to work on networking to help the horses that are in the holding pens, as well as support the sanctuaries. I would also like to see more use of birth control as well as gelding the older stallions and then turning them back out to live out their lives in freedom. The older stallions that wind up in the pens have a very poor chance of being successfully adopted and with the life span of 30 years that is a long time for a horse to live in the pens if he is not lucky enough to wind up at a sanctuary. While the sentiment to "let them all run free" is a nice one it is not realistic. Instead of demonizing and attacking the BLM and their practices we all need to work together to help the horses most at risk, and those are the ones that for whatever reason, be it too old, not pretty enough or just slipping through the cracks have now become an "unadoptable" three strikes horse.

Photographing Wild Horses

I have been visiting the wild horse ranges in the west since 2006. It is impossible for anyone to really understand the scale and grandeur of these places unless they have visited, photos just don't seem to do it justice! Even more amazing to me is how healthy the horses look on such seemingly barren and dry landscapes. These horses are incredibly tough and hardy and it is truly survival of the fittest in this harsh and unforgiving environment.

Every year when I go to Colorado I make a point to get out to the Sand Wash Basin at least once. This area is well documented by many photographers as it has fairly easy access and the roads are passable as long as it is dry and you have a high clearance vehicle. Maps of the area will keep you from getting lost! Plan to spend the day, bring plenty of water, snacks, sun screen and comfortable footwear. Because you will be many miles away from civilization a spare tire and the ability to change a flat is also useful!

As with most HMA's (Herd Management Areas) you are never guaranteed to see horses, sometimes they may be way off in the distance, but the water holes are always a good bet. In the spring when the babies arrive and there is stallion action and lots of dynamic herd behavior is always a good bet for exciting photos. Long lenses are called for here, as well as staying a good distance away and not approaching them is critical for your safety and their survival.

In 2014 I visited the McCulloughs Peaks herd in Wyoming and spent some time on White Mountain near Rocks Springs, Wyoming. This gallery is from my visit to the Sand Wash. To get an idea of where to find the HMA's you will find the BLM website to be a good resource. If you are ever out west and love wild places then make the time for a visit, and maybe you will be lucky enough to see the wild ones, it is an experience that you will always remember.

Arizona in Winter

Last winter I was lucky enough to travel to Arizona to take a break from the long northeast winter. This was the second year I stayed at the lovely Flying E Ranch outside of Wickenburg.

If you are looking for a perfect winter get away I highly recommend this guest ranch! If you are lucky you may spot a bobcat, coyote or owl, and can explore the desert on horse back. In the morning and evening the horses are run to and from the barn and the cowboys are always happy to accommodate requests! Cowboy Johnny Lucas (pictured above) has a great look as well as a wonderful singing voice that we thoroughly enjoyed as he serenaded us with cowboy songs one evening. Thanks to Johnny I discovered singer Dave Stamey and am now a fan!

The nearby Rancho de los Caballeros also runs their herd to and from the barn and pasture twice a day and their colorful herd is easily photographed and viewed from a handy viewing platform.

Wickenburg has become a mecca for team roping and at any given time during the winter there can be several roping events going on in the area. There are always so many photo ops when shooting this kind of event, and it is good to just soak up the winter sun for a while this time of year. While in the area make sure you also check in at this wonderful western museum!

Wickenburg and the state of Arizona are a great winter destination with plenty of blue sky and sunshine, interesting places to visit and lots of horse activities to enjoy!

Babies and the Big Valley

One fairly recent discovery I have made is the Big Valley in Pennsylvania.

I make an effort to visit this area at least once or twice a year, the Amish lifestyle is fascinating to me and it is always a treat for me to see this beautiful part of the world.

While most people think about the Lancaster area when the Amish are mentioned I have found this area far more unspoiled and picturesque. In the spring the fields are full of working teams planting and haying and the lovely farms and well tended fields are always a feast for the eyes.

You never know what you may find around the next corner and I always feel like I have stepped back in time when I have spent some time here.

With more and more farms and all the accompanying land becoming abandoned and derelict it gives me faith that there are still people who steward the land and keep old traditions alive.

Year End Round Up!

Another busy year is almost behind us. It has been a busy one again, with some amazing trips, new friends and places discovered as well as some losses that are part of life and loving and caring for animals. As much as it hurts I could not imagine not sharing my life with animals, they enrich us in so many ways, make life worth living and remind us of what is truly important.

Over the next few weeks I am going to share my 2014 travels with you as well as galleries and favorite images from my trips. I hope you will enjoy them and please get in touch if you are interested in purchasing a photo (all my images are for sale!) or would like to discuss a visit.

Winter at the McCulloughs Peaks HMA, Wyoming

I am going to start with my winter trip to Wyoming last February. Wyoming is rapidly becoming one of my favorite places to visit with it's variety of amazing and unspoiled landscapes, friendly people who make you feel at home and no shortage of photo opportunities when it comes to spectacular landscapes and the western lifestyle, from rodeo and ranch work to wild horses. I always look forward to my travels there and know that I will be treated to a few new hidden gems and surprises.

In February I made my first trip to The Hideout Ranch in Shell, Wyoming to run a photography workshop for the Equine Photographers Network. Situated at the base of the Bighorn Mountains this ranch has stunning and iconic back drops wherever you turn and the hospitality, food and accommodations were first class all the way. The small group of women who participated were so much fun to shoot with and we enjoyed every minute of our time at this special place.

I have a gallery of favorite images from last years workshop here and look forward to returning again in February. Though it may be cold you will be treated to amazing winter light, blue skies and scenery that most photographers only dream of!

Photographing Horses: Join Me!

Almost daily I receive emails asking me questions about photographing horses from what camera and lenses I use to create my images to more involved questions such as how a certain image may have been created, how my action images look sharp (or how I got that great blur!) or why my head shots and backgrounds look a certain way. There are no real secrets, the big one I have found is that it takes a lot of time, patience, practice and perseverance to create images that reflect the image you may have in your head. There are really no shortcuts!

In equine photography the first advantage you have is a love and understanding for horses, this will be a huge help for developing your photography skills as you already understand horse behavior, breed standards and being able to predict the movement and expression of horses.
Many people these days have cameras that do all the work for them, and while their images may be acceptable they have little real control over how their images are created, and until you gain some control over your camera you will never create truly good, consistent images.

Since I was originally a film shooter I still work hard to get my images as good as I can in the camera without having to spend loads of time "fixing" them in photoshop. I spend a lot of time composing in camera, and shoot with intention, not at random hoping something turns out good. It's not that simple, and if you are shooting this way you are probably experiencing some frustration at the percentage of images that you are satisfied with!

My popular Basics of Equine Photography Online course starts this coming Monday,
we will be accepting sign ups until Friday. No matter where you are in your skills as an equine photographer I invite you to join me for this intensive five week course to get feedback on your images and learn all the small but critical elements that go into creating photos of horses that you can be proud of, as well as increasing the percentage of images that you are happy with! We will start with the camera and all it's settings in the first week, then progress to headshots, conformation, action and much more.

I hope you will join us. The only requirement is a DSLR camera with a lens that has a focal length of 135mm or greater and a desire to learn! This course will be completely online with the ability to access the materials at your convenience, and I will be providing daily feedback on the forum course area.

Colorado Adventures

It was wonderful to get back to Colorado for my ninth trip to the Great American Horse Drive earlier this spring. We had a great group of photographers for our workshop although the cold and windy weather provided some challenges for both photographers and wranglers. We had constantly changing weather conditions from snow squalls, dramatic skies with lots of clouds to bright blue cloudless back drops - all in a matter of minutes!

Head wrangler Chuck Hummel did a masterful job wrangling cowboys, cowgirls and horses along with an awesome stage coach shoot, our workshop leader Scott Trees helped set up the shoots and as usual Mark Kettenhofen had his candy store of Nikon gear available for all photographers to play with. As always the drive was spectacular with the herd safely delivered to the home ranch for another year. Next year's drive is scheduled for the first weekend in May and you can be sure I will be back for more fun and games! While in Colorado I also spent some time searching for birds in both the Craig and Walden areas and was richly rewarded with good views of Sharp Tailed Grouse, Swainson's Hawks, and White Pelicans among others. No trip to Colorado is ever complete without a visit to the vast and magnificent Sand Wash Wild Horse Management area to look for the wild horses there. The horses there were healthy and active with new babies and plenty of stallion activity.

It will be another busy summer, stay tuned for photos from a very exciting trip coming up soon, and in August I am looking forward to returning to the Powderhorn Ranch in Wyoming for our annual girls' retreat there. It is always a pleasure to spend time here with the True family and their beautiful horses in a spectacular setting and an extra treat to share it with fellow photographers. It was really special to me to have one of my photos of head Powderhorn cowgirl Hailey True featured on the cover of America's Horse recently! Going to the birds....

I admit, I love birds and this winter was especially exciting with the Snowy Owl Irruption. When I travelled to Chincoteague last December to photograph Snow Geese I first heard about this phenomenon and hoped that I would be blessed to spot one. I have never seen an owl in the wild other than the burrowing owls in the west, so it was a true blessing when literally the next weekend as I was travelling north I had an up close experience with one at Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge! In addition I was able to see some Snowy Owls at our local landfill in Broome County, NY.

Over the winter lots of great Snowy Owl images were shared online from all over the east coast and really sparked my interest in bird photography. I follow many excellent and informative bird pages on Facebook that share images and information and also help educate on migration and behavior. Facebook and the internet is a great way to connect and learn and I welcome you to subscribe to my bird list if you are interested.

Speaking of bird behavior, we have many bald eagles living right here in the western Catskills of New York. Mainly they can be found around the reservoirs where fishing is good. I see them almost on a daily basis but never have I been so delighted as the day in late winter when I found a pair playing and tumbling in the sky. What a treat for me to see this! The eagles can often be seen out on the ice during the winter and it is wonderful to see them soaring effortlessly on the thermals.

Recently I took a trip south to Maryland to the Conowingo Dam, the second largest Dam in the US and known for it's Bald Eagle population. Here the Susquehanna River empties into the Chesapeake Bay watershed and powers much of Philadelphia. We were treated to lots of bird life here but the best was watching the Osprey busily building their nest.

On our way back north we stopped at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management area in Pennsylvania, a lovely, peaceful spot known for it's Snow Goose visitors. While there was only a small flock of Snow Geese still left in the area we were also treated to Tundra Swans, ducks of many varieties, tree swallows and even a lovely little bluebird. This is a spot I will be returning to again! I hope you enjoy these photographs and promise I will be getting back to the horses soon!

Imagequine Travels, past and future!

Hello Friends! I hope you all survived the winter OK, I know for many of us it was long, hard and challenging! We have had our fair share of snow, wind and cold here and hope that warmer

weather and green grass gets here soon! I am sorry I have been neglecting my blog. Sometimes I wonder if people still read them but according to my stats people are still visiting so I thought I would try and bring you up to date on my recent as well as upcoming travels!

While there is not much horse photography to be done during the winter months I have been trying to get out on a regular basis to look for raptors and have been rewarded with some good sightings of Snowy Owls, Bald Eagles and various raptors. Just this week there has been a lot of migratory activity, always a good indicator of the change of seasons. Recently I was lucky enough to catch a quick glimpse of what I am fairly certain was a bobcat right here on our own property!

Last November I organized a workshop for my friend Scott Trees in the Fort Worth, Texas area and we had the opportunity to visit some beautiful locations and photograph some great horses! Enjoy my gallery of this event.

Scott and I will be working together to lead our annual photo workshop at Sombrero Ranch which is followed by the Great American Horse Drive. This will be my ninth year attending. This event is always a highlight for me. What could be better than being surrounded by hundreds of horses under the vast Colorado sky?

Scott and I are also working together on a workshop in November in Thousand Oaks, California. This should be a good one, and I am looking forward to exploring this part of the country!

Earlier this winter I was lucky enough to get out of the cold for a little while and spend some

time at the Flying E Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona again to enjoy some mild desert weather and the wonderful hospitality of the staff there!

From Wickenburg I traveled north to Cody, Wyoming for a week long retreat of winter photography with a great group of ladies at the Hideout Ranch in Shell Wyoming. It was a magical time of snow, horses, cowboys and fun in an absolutely amazing location and we are looking forward to returning and doing it all again in February of 2015. The Camargue, Cloud, Cavalia and more!

Hello Friends! It was an exciting year for me and I am catching my breath and trying write it all down so I can share some of my latest galleries of my work with you. Just follow the links below to see more images.

This year I had the opportunity to travel to the Camargue region of southern France for the first time and photograph the fabled white horses of the area. In August we once again met up at the amazing Powderhorn Ranch for a week's photography retreat. After this event I travelled in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado and was treated to seeing and photographing Cloud's band in the Pryor Mountains as well as the Mustangs of the McCullough Peaks and the Sand Wash Basin.

To top off these amazing new photo ops, I was invited to attend media day when Cavalia came to Boston . . . if you ever get the chance to attend this dramatic show it is worth every penny!

Whenever I am in Pennsylvania I try to spend some time in the "Big Valley" there. This is a pristine valley where the majority of farmers still do things the old way, and it is a real treat to see, and photograph, the big horses working in the fields.

I was lucky to do some shooting in Vermont at the optimal foliage time, and a special treat was visiting Tamarack Hill Farm! Our group also enjoyed some portrait sessions at the Moses Kent Farm, fall trail riding fun with Joe and Delilah, an Icelandic Farm and a morning in South Woodstock with the North Country Hounds.

My travels for the year are not quite over, and I am already looking forward to next year! I will be heading to Fort Worth, Texas early this month, and in December I will travel to Chincoteague in hopes of catching the spectacular snow goose migration. Next year we will be back in Wickenburg, Arizona, as well as Shell, Wyoming and Craig, Colorado.

Spring Travels and Adventures

The month of May flew by in a whirlwind of epic shoots and fun adventures and travel with friends. In early May the annual EPNet workshop at the Sombrero Ranch in Craig Colorado followed by the Great American Horse Drive did not disappoint! Although we missed Ed Pinkard and daughter Sara as well as Kansas this year, head wrangler Chuck Hummel did a great job of running our shoots for us with the help of Alex and Jessie, Christy, Terry, Johnny and all the rest of the amazing cowboys and cowgirls! The light and weather were great, the horses fresh and the photographers ready for fun and fellowship. Year after year this is the week many of us live for and any other shoot pales in comparison. In addition, having Nikon rep Mark Kettenhofen join us with the latest and greatest Nikon gear is an added treat, and I was lucky to test the new 80-400 Nikkor lens which I now have added to my bag and have been using quite a bit. The drive was fast and furious this year with a near stampede for the first five miles making for lots of adrenaline charged photo ops! The new horses in the herd did not know that the drive is done at a walk and trot and were ready to do it at a full gallop, and took some hard riding on the wranglers' part to get them slowed down. After a short visit home I was off again, this time to Europe. I spent a very lovely (although rainy) few days with my Aunt in Brussels recovering from jet lag before I flew on to the Camargue region of France to join a group of friends to photograph the white horses indigenous to the region. This was a long dreamed of trip that proved to exceed my expectations! We photographed horses in the marshes, in ponds, on the beach and in the sea and also visited local stables and equestrian centers. The horse and gypsy culture is strong and alive in this part of the world and very exciting to see and photograph. This spring I also attended the NC PAHA Arabian show in Pennsylvania and spent some time traveling in the Big Valley in Pennsylvania. It is wonderful to see the Amish still farming with horses and all the farms are so picturesque and pristine, it is always a treat for me to travel in this part of the world.

I will be staying closer to home for a while and in July I will once again be leading an online course, The Basics of Equine Photography. This is a very popular and intensive five week course that will cover all the elements of creating good equine images, I will share lots of tips and tricks and maybe even a few secrets, and will provide lots of feedback on photos the students take as well as address any questions or issues you may have. I hope you will join me for this course as we explore the world of equine photography together!

The last seven years of Sombrero Ranch and Great American Horse Drive in photos...

In 2006 I travelled to Craig, Colorado to attend the Great American Horse Drive for the first time, and have returned every year since. It is the highlight of my year to attend this incredible event and it has been a huge pleasure to facilitate the Sombrero Ranch photo workshop and photographers portion of this event through the Equine Photographers Network for the past six years now. What a treat and so much fun to share this unique event with fellow photographers!

Every year I return from this event with many new and exciting images that I use to create my calendar, show in art competitions and exhibitions and license for stock usage, the photo ops are just so endless, exciting and unique. At the moment five of my images from the Horse Drive and Sombrero Ranch Workshop are hanging at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum Cowgirls with a Camera show in Wickenburg, Arizona, as well as locally in the Sidney Library in Sidney, New York. All the prints at the library are for sale at greatly reduced prices, here is your chance to have some great western art to hang and enjoy in your home!

Saying Goodbye

The animals that live with us are family members and we have been with many of them as they were humanely put to rest. Some have lived long, happy, healthy lives and laying them down has been bittersweet, but something we were able to prepare ourselves for, others we lost before their lives had barely begun and those have been harder to swallow. It never gets any easier and the worst thing of all is seeing an animal in such pain that the only real option we have is to release them from that pain.

Unfortunately yesterday was such a day when I had to make this decision for my gelding Gulliver, a big, stong, healthy horse that was bred and born here 15 years ago. He and his two bay sisters were always a trio, and being the only gelding in my little herd never seemed to faze him. Doing chores last night felt so strange and the place he left empty was a big gaping hole. Life is always changing, and our time here is so fleeting, please take a moment to appreciate all you have and take good care of those four legged babies that depend on us for so much.

I have found since most of my online presence is on facebook that when I go to look for an old link to share it can be a real challenge actually finding it, so I am going to make more of an effort to share these links through my blog on a (semi) regular basis. A while back my friend and colleague Scott Trees and I were interviewed about horse photography by Glenn from the Horse Radio Network for the Stable Scoop Radio Show. It's hard to believe that was in 2008! But it's a fun interview and contains some useful tips. More recently I have started doing photo tips for them again, and there is actually a great archive of photo tips here from both Scott and myself.
