This blog seems almost dead!!! Have not written in ages...
Being the last Saturday before the kids come back, wanted to indulge in vegan food at Itaewon!
Taking the subway, for a little over 90 mins was a great silent way to travel today!

Which brings me to PLANT...surprising that it took me this long to go there.
Have been quite inspired by the vegan owner Mipa's blog Alien's Day Out , and with the few completely vegan restaurants in this country, I should have naturally gone over to try long back...PLANT has been around since Aug 2013.

Mipa suggested burger for dinner and I chose chai latte for drinking.
The burger was fabulous and the chai was just outstanding...so much so that I asked Mipa more info on the soy milk. Pictures of the dinner follow!

First Nepal Restaurant: Our favourite at Jukjeon

First Nepal is one restaurant I should have written many months ago when I discovered through Naver. Was lazy to mention in the blog since it was over 10 km from home and I figured it would be an one-off place. The surprising thing is that, considering we hardly eat out, this is by far the most visited restaurant in all these years.

Located just outside the Dankook University(Jukjeon campus), the restaurant has an affordably priced menu , decent ambience and a friendly owner. Most importantly, the chef does a good job!

Getting out during the weekends with the kids takes serious efforts!
How I wish we could leave home quickly and travel more.

Finally, last Sunday, wanted to go to the Seoul Children's Grand Park(having never been there all these years). As my luck would have it, after driving 40 km I realized that there is no way I could enter the park- parking was full and just too many cars waiting. To top it, the crowd was unimaginable! Apparently, that day was the best to watch cherry blossoms in full bloom, and looked like the whole country had descended there.

Hating crowds the way I do, decided to return home...On the way, near Lotte World, was Seokchon Lake...change of plans and we wanted to atleast look at the cherry blossoms.

As I should have expected, there were more people than flowers in the path encircling the lake!
Probably,people in Korea love taking pictures the most!!! One of the bad things of the smartphone era, is that people are more concerned with clicking pictures than enjoying the moment...
Just too many selfie rods around me!

Took a few pictures. And, ticked off the to-do list of watching cherry blossoms this year. mission accomplished!

Tranche Vegan Buffet Restaurant, Yongin (뜰안채채식뷔페)

It has been just too long since I last posted here!
Hopefully, 2015 will find me regular.

So here goes my first post for 2015.

After weeks of dilly-dallying of going to Tranche at Yongin, I could finally visit them with a friend, sometime in December last year. This branch was started in Aug. 2014.

This restaurant is a branch of the Tranche I had been a few times earlier, around 3-4 km from Suwon station.

The ambience was quite modern, yet simple. And the place has probably similar capacity to the Hwaseong branch.

It was a rare delight to feast on the absolutely vegan menu( I double checked on the kimchi!)Probably more than 30 items in the buffet. The only condition/request they make is not to waste food.

I tend to think of Korean food being much healthier than Indian food, as long as they are vegan!

I wonder how they are able to serve at such modest prices!

Reading on the Subway!

Instead of a lazy Sunday, I happened to get up early today, and take the line 4 subway. My reasons were a few. I had not travelled by subway for a long time in the last many months, using the car or taking buses. A quiet day to be spent almost silently was part of my plan(there are days I simply switch off my mobile, stay away from computer...probably that is for another post). And, finally to get to reading "eat, pray, love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. Reading books while using trains-long distance or short, has been a favourite pastime while travelling. Probably was a little nostalgic yesterday evening. Probably really wanted to get into the groove. Have hardly read anything in the last one month of being alone here! Being just too caught up at work, reaching home and then taking up books was a bit too much for me to do. Rather, relaxing with movies seemed more palatable!

"Eat, pray, love" has been in the left-in-the-middle state for a few months now.

And, on top of that, have bought quite a few books from Kyobo online.

It is high time I start checking out the list of unread books at home. So off I was to the station. And to make things a little interesting, planned to reach Itaewon, have lunch, buy some foodstuff and return. There were shorter routes to go to. But since the focus was on reading while on the subway, I decided to reach the end of Line 4( Wangsimni station) and take line transfers. Almost took 1.5 hours to reach. While going, as luck would have it I stood for almost the whole distance and could hardly read a few pages. On the way back, Wangsimni being the first station, I sat the whole distance.

About a 100 pages read, made for a very satisfying train journey!

Korean Road Naming System (도로명주소)

The new Korean address convention based on road names is supposed to become mandatory from 2014. I have seen these addresses in this format in the last couple of years and have usually abhorred using that style, finding it too inconvenient.

Last week, while searching for the pin code of our apartment, I got curious about the new format. Probably, the fact that I have been living here for some years got me so used to the land oriented lot-number addressing system rather than roads, that I disliked any change! Now that I looked a little into the naming method, I find it quite informative and useful. Locating new places is much more easier on our own. From a car navigation point of view, does not make any difference;)

So here it goes! All information is from Juso.go.kr

- Roads are divided into sections at 20 m. intervals, in west->east or south->north direction.
- Left sides are odd-numbered while the right sides are even-numbered.
- Intersecting streets are numerically numbered, again following the left=odd, right=even convention.
- Finally, the main entrance of a building is given a number.

Balcony Gardening!

At home, in the balcony, we have been growing plants all these years. We have had flowering plants as well as non-flowering ones. Considering the long winters here, it is a miracle that some plants have survived beyond a year. Especially since we keep the pots at the same places all the time. Despite the glass windows, it gets incredibly cold. I call it the "survival of the fittest" test!

Coming to the reason for this blog. We had put some bitter gourd seeds in a plastic tub to see if they can grow into plants. They grew to our surprise and started "spreading their legs"! Instead of my original idea to tie strings and make them climb, I simply placed the tub outside the balcony on a stand to have my own "hanging garden" This morning I was surprised to find small bitter gourds coming. The very first time I have seen bitter gourds growing at home! And, since bitter gourds are not so commonly sold in Korea, it was all the more special. Probably, the bitter gourds may not grow big enough, considering the weather has become colder. Maybe I should bring the tub inside with my fingers crossed! Just seeing the tiny gourds sprouting made my day!

To add to the excitement, I also noticed chilli growing in another pot!

So much for experimenting with plants. We have had mint, coriander and fenugreek growing earlier. Will wait for winter to get over and start again with bitter gourds next year! Hopefully I can get a harvest ;)

The new subway line, Everline, connecting Yongin to the Subway system opened on 26th Apr 2013.
The line is from Kiheung to Everland. I guess it maybe quite convenient to use the subway to go to Everland from Yeongtong!

I was surprised to know that it took about 12 years to open this 18 km. line. This much time is eternity in Korea!

Everline connects to the subway system at Kiheung(Bundang Line)

It takes 60 minutes for a round-trip. Trains run from 5:30 to mid-night.

It had been over four years since I had my first skiing experience- falling all over the place! Last weekend, off I went to Yangji Pine Resort to get a feel of skiing once again. I had planned to take lessons this time, and it was well worth it! At the end of the morning session I had fallen just once. wow!

What I liked about Yangji is that it is about 30 km from home. The slopes are considered too simple by people who know to ski well, so probably not too crowded! For me, the gradient was just right to relish going down the slope.To top it, there was a 30% discount for foreigners on ski/clothing rental and a 20% discount on lessons.

For English lessons, one should probably call them up and reserve a slot.

There is a small playing area quite close to our place,in fact, across the road.

It is called Height Jump Land. Located on the second floor of the building as you climb down from the Hwanggol Overbridge at Yeongtong-1danji.

Had been curious about the place since I walk across the road everyday while going to work...but as it usually happens, places nearest to us seem so accessible to us that we usually miss...

One recent evening, went there with my son.

Quite a small place, meant only for jumping!

But, then kids there didn't seem tired of all the jumping!

Yeongtong Subway Line Opening

After waited for ages, the subway line at Yeongtong is finally going to open.
Unusually for Korea, the project has been going on for eons. The construction started long before we came to Korea. There was a lull for some time, and picked up a couple of years ago. Probably hit by the recession?

The service is slated to begin on December 1st (2012.12.01).
Four stations (Mangpo, Yeongtong, ChongMeong and SangKal) will get connected to the Bundang line at Kiheung.

New Delhi - Another Indian Restaurant in Town

With the increasing number of foreigners in Suwon, it is quite a treat to have increased choices for food.

A new Indian restaurant opened at Yeongtong, a couple of months back. For whatever reasons, it took me two months to come to know!!! Had gone over to the KEB ATM to withdraw some cash, and was pleasantly surprised to hear Indian film songs being played. Getting curious, I saw this restaurant- New Delhi, right across! That's when I decided to have dinner the next weekend...

I must say this is the most spacious Indian foodie place in town. And, staffed by Koreans. Chefs from India+Nepal. What I found very convenient about the place was the location- close to Yeongtong Homeplus in the KEB bank building. Service was not bad. Not too great either. Although, I must say that I was impressed with the packing of left-over appetizers. Price-wise it is on the medium rung compared to other Indian restaurants in the vicinity. All-in-all a welcome addition.

With increasing number of foreigners choosing to stay for longer durations in Korea, there is a growing interest in residency/permanent residency visas. It is a usual thing to find the English versions of Korean websites not having the latest info.
The English version and Korean links show different financial and Korean language skills requirements for various visa types. It would be better to look at the English version to get an idea of F-5 eligibility and the Korean version to crosscheck. The annual income and TOPIK requirements have been relaxed recently adn it can be found in the Korean version.

Why to get F-5?

Listing some of the benefits of a F-5 visa...

On paper, a F-5 visa holder is legally same as a Korean, except for presidential elections. Voting in local elections is allowed after 3 years of being a permanent resident holder.
One need not worry about renewing visas every year or every few years.
F-5 visa holder can use the Korean lines at the airport
One is free to go for any legal job in Korea.
Free to make any investment
Spouse automatically gets a residency visa(F-2)
Can continue keeping the visa as long as a visit to Korea is made atleast once in 2 years

Personally, except for the spouse getting a residency visa, nothing else quite impresses me.
Unlike other countries, I have not yet seen any special benefits for being a permanent resident. Like getting visas for parents, getting bank loans, to cite a couple of examples. It sure makes life a little bit more convenient though. And, probably as Korea opens up, things may change for the better! Hope^^

PhotoTrip to the Garden of Morning Calm(아침고요수목원)

I finally made it!

Having been a member of the photography community at the company for close to a year and never going for the field trips was taking its toll on me! I was beginning to wonder the whole point of paying money every month without participating! The master of excuses that I can be many a time, I would find convenient excuses not to join the group- "busy" is the easiest! The fact that I am the only non-Korean member as of now made it overwhelming with all sorts of images of my being uncomfortable!

I had heard of the Garden of Morning Calm a few times over the last 5 years here. Chiefly, the fact that the name is inspired by the great Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, kept feeding my curiousity for the place. A private garden opened to the public as a small beginning and growing to over 30,000 sq. m. is quite an achievement. Professor Sang Kyung Han of the Sahmyook University,Seoul conceived this idea of a garden representing Korean traditions.

We left near the company by 9:30 am. Lunch was on the way. I was impressed to see an almost-everything-on-table being vegan. That quite made my day! I made a mental note of SsamBaap(쌈밥) restaurants for future reference. I am quite tired of looking at BibimBaap as a primary vegan option in Korea...

After a sumptuous lunch, it was a short trip to the Garden. Being spring these days the theme was tulips! There are various gardens and quite large to walk the whole place in about 2 hours that I was there.I have never seen tulips in so many colours and hues before.

Peace-listening my camera "click". After ages, I went somewhere with the sole purpose of clicking pictures. How therapeutical! How alive I felt! I am sure to join in for more picture taking trips now after the first step!

As an aside, I tried searching for the poem by Tagore mentioning "Land of Morning Calm". All I could find were lines from "Lamp of the East"(1929) associating Tagore with Korea. Looks like middle school students get to study this poem in Korea.

Dongtan Suembu Restaurant (동탄 수엠부)

Last evening, had been to the Dongtan Suembu Indian/Nepali restaurant. It is rare to get good Indian restaurants around town and so when this idea of eating out propped up, we chose to go to a new place, along with our Korean friend.

At the outset, I was surprised to find Korean staff there. Since the Suwon branch is run by a Nepali family, I presumed this was a branch. This is more of an independently run restaurant except for the name, which has probably been licensed/franchised from the Suwon restaurant.

I was impressed by the ambience when we entered. The staff were courteous.

Our ordered food came relatively quickly. And, the taste, quite delectable.

I also got to meet the chef, who is from Mumbai.

Durng the course of our eating, I was quite curious, how a Korean started this restaurant with a Nepali connection..While paying our bill, I came to know of the owner's involvement with social service in Nepal. Mr. DongHyon Kim(김동현), the owner, had been there a few times to help some children's cause. And, over the years, this Nepali connection grew. He informed me that he quit his job and started this restaurant last year.

The prices were reasonable for the quality.

The first post for this year!

What an incredibly busy time the last two months of 2011 have been!

I have been wanting to post atleast a couple of posts a month- which seems quite do-able- in reality has not happened yet!

A short post to begin this year.

This comes courtesy a question somebody asked me.

Made me realize how tough it is to search on the internet for English based kindergartens( language schools?) or schools in the vicinity. This list of schools is nowhere exhaustive- just happens to be the places I know where Indians send their little ones.

A very interesting museum for children has opened up at Yongin city, very close to Suwon, recently. Located within the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum campus, this place was a novel experience for me!

Information and models on nature and daily life can be seen there. Quite a lot of activities for kids on the various floors of the museum. Considering the low entry ticketprices, no wonder there is a hourly restriction on the number of people allowed in. We waited for an hour since the tickets were sold out at the time we wanted to visit.

Last time I checked, only Koreans could do advance booking online :( Since resident numbers are used for almost everything online here and database for Koreans is different from that of foreigners, I was not able to book online on the Korean website. Hope this is rectified soon...Despite increasing number of foreigners, a government initiative not bothering about the needs of foreigners was a little strange. Although, there are quite a few websites which are interested in business with foreigners these days!

Going by public transport may be the most convenient keeping in mind car-parking woes during weekends.
