IMAGINEINDIA IN BARCELONA. DECEMBER 2016 – MARCH 2017

IMAGINEINDIA in collaboration with Casa Asia presents a number of 11 films, seven of which come from India, one from Sri Lanka, one from Pakistan and two from Nepal.

This festival is integrated almost in its totality by productions that have participated in big festivals like Busan , Berlin or Cannes, although not form part of what currently is considered commercial circuit, since most are movies more parallel cinema, with a solid narrative structure. This program is part of the programming of Imagineindia 2017 that has been selected by Qazi Abdur Rahim, nominated to the Goya (Spanish film awards) on two occasions and director of the ImagineIndia International Film Festival, that in 2017 will held its 16th Edition in Madrid. With films from 2014 to 2016, these films are characterized by raising topics that, despite coming from cultures very different between itself, are very present in their present societies. About problems around the identity of gender, family relations and socio-political conflicts or contrasts between the religion and the mundane life.

Leopard Do Not Bite (Sinhalese: Dadayakkaraya) is a Sri Lankan drama directed by Prasanna Jayakody, starring Sanjeewa Upendra, Hemasiri Liyanage, and Christina Britto. It depicts a conflict between a monk and a hunter, giving a ground to a philosophical exploration of death’s place in life. The story was inspired by Simon Navagattegama’s novel Dadayakkaraya’s story. It was screened at 20th Busan International Film Festival 2015.

Dadayakkaraya depicts a clash between a philosophy of the one who lives in a jungle and hunts wild animals as fodder for the people and that of the one who lives in a temple and hunts people as fodder for a religion.

He left home, took up idol-making for a living.He met Swati(24) then, married soon and moved once again fearing social backlash. His fight to establish his identity, struggle for existence met by a sarcastic society yet to learn to take ‘other genders’ seriously.

Lyari Notes is a 2016 documentary that was directed by Maheen Zia and Miriam Chandy Menacherry.[1][2] The film premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and follows a young girl and her friends as they use music as a form of escape and expression.

The film follows four young girls that routinely travel from Lyari to a musical school in another area. The travel is long and dangerous, plus the girls’ families are not always supportive of their desire to learn music as they feel that it violates Islamic law. Lyari Notes follows the girls over a three-year period.

Gouri, a documentary filmmaker takes a journey along with her friend. She is trying to collect material for her documentary project on instrumental music. They go to a village with the help of a schoolteacher. They travel to meet an instrumental musician, who has gone some place elsewhere to give a performance. Both are forced to stay in the village till the musician returns. Film tries to capture the human attitude when they are placed in a condition/situation/environment which is familiar and at the same time unfamiliar. As the seemingly simple yet complex situations develop, how these characters fits in to a landscape and climate as much mental as physical. Some time “vision” isn’t what is visible, sound isn’t exactly what is heard.

We are in the year 2001, a temporary ceasefire brings a much-needed break to a small war-torn village in Northern Nepal, bringing much joy among the residents. Prakash and Kiran, two young close friends, are also starting to feel the change in the air. Though they are divided by caste and social creed, they remain inseparable, and start raising a hen given to Prakash by his sister, with hopes to save money by selling her eggs. However, the hen goes missing. To find it, they embark on a journey, innocently unaware of the tyranny brought by the fragile ceasefire.

The 14th edition of Imagineindia International Film Festival will take place in Madrid from 17th to 31st may 2015.

Rules for the submission of films :

Artícle 1 DATE and PLACE

The 14th edition of ImagineIndia International Film Festival will take place in the city of Madrid from 17th to 31th May 2015. The festival will be organized by the Asociation AIMIFF based in Madrid.

Artícle 2 PURPOSE

The Festival ImagineIndia is mainly devoted to promote friendship and cooperation between Indian Subcontinent, rest of Asia and Spain and along with it the European Union.
It's aim is to showcase and focus attention on films coming mainly from India, but with some concessions to the other countries of the Indian Subcontinent and rest of Asia, in order to contribute to the better comprehension of Indian Culture, and to the development of more fluid relations among the Indian Subcontinent and Europe.

Artícle 3 SECTIONS

The Selection Committee of the Festival is entitled to select and invite the films which will be presented in the Official Competition or Out of Competition Section.
The films which meet the following conditions will be selected by invitation for the Festival,s Competitive section.

1) Films that have been produced during the 24 months preceding the Festival.

2) Films that respect the aims of the Festival as mentioned in Article 2.

Artícle 4 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

4. 1. All sections are open to international submissions. Any producer and / or director with the rights to the film submitted may participate in this section.

4. 2. Each filmmaker or producer may submit as many films as he / she wishes.

4. 3. It will be required for all selected films to be presented in the format with best projection quality, irrespective of the format in which it was originally made. In any case the only formats at ImagineIndia Festival 2014 will be 35mm, Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD.

4. 4. The films competing must provide the festival with the dialogue sheet at least in english or spanish.

Artícle 5 ENTRY

The Submission should be done by any of the following means :

Artícle 6 SELECTION

The Organising Committee designates the members of the International Jury.
The jury is composed of three reputed personalities from Spain, India or other nationalities.
Decisions will be reached by unanimity.
No person having taken part in any manner in a film in competition may be on the Jury.
There will be no right of appeal against the decision of the Selection Committee.
The Director of the Festival has the power to settle all cases not covered by the present rules.

The participants authorize the organization to use extracts from the films in any media for the purpose of promoting the festival. It will also be allowed to use photographs from the films and of the directors in the press and other media, as well as in the making of the Festival Catalogue.

Article 7 AWARDS

The Juries, will grant the following official awards from among all the films selected in the Official Section. The award for best film will include the trophy GOLDEN CHAKRA:

5 films of the renowned russian director Marlen Khutsiyev will be heading to Zaragoza :

Marlen Khutsiyev

Marlen Martynovich Khutsiev (born October 4, 1925 in Tbilisi) is a Georgian-born Soviet and Russian filmmaker best known for his cult films from the 1960s, which include I Am Twenty and July Rain. He was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1986.

Khutsiev's father, Martyn Levanovich Khutsishvili (the family's original Georgian surname), was a lifelong Communist who was purged by Joseph Stalin in 1937. His mother, Nina Mikhailovna Utenelishvili, was an actress.

Khutsiev studied film in the directing department at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, graduating in 1952. He worked as a director at the Odessa film studio from 1952 to 1958, and worked full-time as a director at Mosfilm from 1965 onwards.

Khutsiev's first feature film, Spring on Zarechnaya Street (1956), encapsulated the mood of the Khrushchev Thaw and went on to became one of the top box-office draws of the 1950s. Three years later, Khutsiev launched Vasily Shukshin "as a new kind of popular hero" by starring him in Two Fyodors. His two masterpieces of the 1960s, however, were panned by the authorities, forcing Khutsiev into something of an artistic silence. Since 1978, Khutsiev has taught film directing master classes at the VGIK.

His 1991 film Infinitas won the Alfred Bauer Prize at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. In 2014 won Imagineindia Award for Lifitime Achievement.

An idealistic, sophisticated young woman meets a rough-around-the-edges, blue collar man and rejects him, only to find out later that they are destined for true love together, despite the fact that he cannot now pass his certification test after she threw him out of her adult education class.

The film deals with three school chums, Sergei, Slava and Nikolai. Sergei is returning to Moscow from his hitch in the Army to find that "you can't go home again" Slava is married and has a toddler. Nikolai is doing research at a scientific institute. Nikolai offers to find Sergei a job at the Institute, but Sergei decides to follow in his deceased father's (killed in battle at age 21 in 1943 during the Great patriotic War, aka WWII) footsteps and work at the local power plant.

Sergei finds that his relationships to people have changed. Slava is distanced from them by his marriage and family commitments, but still tries to be "one of the boys" Nikolai works hard, and flirts shamelessly in exchange. Sergei feels alone and uncomfortable, never really sure what he should be doing. He still lives in the same flat with his mother and younger sister, he goes to work each day and studies to be an engineer at night.

It shows the time of the choice of a future way for the country. In fact the choice was already made in October 1964, when conformist climbers and unprincipled egotists (Volodya) took a lead of the Soviet society and eventually destroyed it. The most charming and human figure of the movie is Alik, played by the famous Russian bard Yuri Vizbor. Alik represents the honest and skeptical part of Soviet society, that didn't have much hope for the bright future and tried to enjoy the life, avoiding ranting and bargaining with the conscience.

The story is simple. A husband's elderly father-in-law comes to visit his daughter and her husband. Unfortunately the wife leaves the city on business for a couple of weeks, and her husband is working on a dissertation at home. The husband is stuck with spending time and hosting the old man. The old man is filled with life, he sings, shouts, and seems to know everything about everything: tobacco, wine. He, basically, never shuts up; but he is kind and friendly. The husband tolerates him, and is happy to make him as comfortable as possible. But the old man starts to really irritate the husband. He always thinks he's right and always goes on and on. He knows 5 languages and has traveled the world, so he has much to say. The story is narrated scarcely by the husband who says the events took place a year ago.

MEGHE DHAKA TARA (Ritwik Ghatak) India. 1960. 126'

One of the most celebrated film of the indian director Ritwik Ghatak.

"Meghe Dhaka Tara" tells the tragic story of the beautiful daughter of a middle-class refugee family from East Pakistan, living in the outskirts of Calcutta under modest circumstances. Neeta sacrifices everything for her family, including her personal happiness, her money, and her health, while her achievements are hardly ever recognized by the people around her.

DHOL GANWAR PASHU ARU NARI (Abhinav Gupta) (Films from Film and Television Institute of India, FTII) India. 2013. 20'

The film talks about the plight of women in the social structure. It is a fight they are constantly fighting against the odd - the male. It is not about the story of Tara and Phool, the characters in the film. They are mere representatives of ‘their’ people.

The film tries to deal with the intense emotional turmoil of a mother, who, having realised the odds, finds herself helpless, but still tries to fight It out leading to an unusual resolve.

AJANTRIK (Ritwik Ghatak) India. 1958. 102'

"They call me a machine, they don't understand that Jaggadal is also a human". The complex interaction between nature, mankind and the machine in the backdrop of an harsh and rocky wasteland of Bihar comes the unique story of Jaggadal. Though the name is masculine but the car is definitely feminine as illuminated in the movie. This is the masterstroke of Ritwik and could well be his defining work. No other movie captured this relationship between a man and his machine as have been done here. All later movies based on such theme will be pale including the most recent AI. Only a vagabond and an insane be so ungrateful and unemotional to something which have been making a living for him for so many years. A point proved in Ajantrik.

WHERE RIVER MEETS THE SEA (Sumon Majumdar)(Films from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, SRFTI) India. 2013. 26'

There was a father and his two daughters. After retirement and social responsibilities the father decides to leave home and goes to 'vanprastha'. The daughters comes close to each other and starts searching the father. When they failed they collects the memories of him and creates a dreamland.

GULABI GANG (Nishta Jain) India. 2012. 96'

The district is Banda, and the region, Bundelkhand, in UP. And an organization that has steadily been a media magnet for what it has managed to do: in the rural backwaters of North India, where years of heavy-handed, violent patriarchy has stunted the growth of women and killed the girl child, a woman has taken on all comers. ‘Gulabi Gang’, Nishtha Jain’s award-winning documentary gives us an up-close view of Sampat Pal and her gang, which dons pink ‘saris’, and hefts ‘lathis’, and fights against injustice where it is most needed.

Mohan is a labour contractor, who works for a construction company. He shares a relation with Sabita in the city. On the contrary, Rakhi and her father-in-law waits in the village for Mohan to return. Occasional money order comes but Mohan doesnâ€™t return. Rakhi finds escapade from her daily mundane life, when she goes to feed Jogi, a truck driver. They share a silent relation. One day, Mohan plans to leave the city. He takes a train to his village.

ANKHON DEKHI (Rajat Kapoor) India. 2014. Cast: Sanjay Mishra, Seema Pahwa, Rajat Kapoor. 146'

Bauji (Sanjay Mishra) lives with his younger brother (Rajat Kapoor) in one of those cramped first floor quarters, more hovel than ‘haveli’, in Old Delhi’s Fatehpuri area. It has a ‘chhatt’ with ‘janglas’, tiny rooms adjacent to each other, a makeshift kitchen, and a common toilet. The family is joint at the hip in more ways than one, which is evident right from the first scene when Bauji’s daughter Rita (Maya Sarao ) is found to be in a relationship with an allegedly disreputable boy (Namit Das), and all hell breaks loose.

APUR PANCHALI (Kaushik Ganguly) India. 2013. Cast: Ardhendu Banerjee, Parambrata Chatterjee, Parno Mitra. 97'

Subir Banerjee at a tender age went on to deliver an impressionable performance as Apu in Pather Panchali which is listed amongst the 100 greatest films of all time. The boy who grew up never to act again in films has striking similarities with the journey of the ‘reel’ Apu. Many of the incidents shown from Subir’s life reflect Apu’s loss and tragedy in the film. Ardhendu Banerjee plays Subir in his dotage. The actor’s performance is earthy and honest which is much necessary to show the character’s internal conflict.

Flashpoint (A. Lohrii Francis, Gurshimran Khamba, Mridula Chari, Shivani Gupta) (Films from Tata Institute for Social Science, TISS) India. 2013. 18'

Mohammed Ali Road and Mahim were among the more affected areas during the riots of 1992-1993. Twenty years later, this film takes the lens back to those areas to map the middle classes of those areas. Their lives, though not tangibly afflicted, were nonetheless transformed by that time enough to reflect in their attitudes towards communalism today. Prominent writer and journalist Dilip D’Souza, draws these narratives together as we try to make sense of stereotypes that persist even today.

Flashpoint is part of a series of films from the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, which seek to revisit the city of Mumbai, twenty years after the communal violence of 1992-93. In a situation where justice has been elusive and the collective amnesia profound, the series attempts to remember and reflect on the events of that tragic period and its aftermath.

SALMA (Kim Longinotto) Great Britain. 2013. 91'

When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13 years old, her family locked her up for 25 years, forbidding her to study and forcing her into marriage. During that time, words were Salma's salvation. She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house, eventually getting them into the hands of a publisher. Against the odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet: the first step to discovering her own freedom and challenging the traditions and code of conduct in her village.

As with her other work (Pink Saris, Rough Aunties), master documentarian Kim Longinotto trains her camera on an iconoclastic woman. Salma's extraordinary story is one of courage and resilience, and Longinotto follows her on an eye-opening trip back to her village. Salma has hopes for a different life for the next generation of girls, but as she witnesses, familial ties run deep, and change happens very slowly.

We are taken through the journey of a young J.C. Daniel, known as the maker of the first Malayalam movie, "Vigathakumaran" ("The Lost Child"), cheerful and enthusiastic, with stars in his eyes, who was determined to bring the art of movie-making to the Malayali shores, but soon turns into a person disillusioned with the world and his passion, and gradually becomes a shadow of the man he once was.

Dates for Imagineindia Barcelona 2014

Here comes a new edition of Imagineindia Barcelona, the sixth. The festival will take place at Cines Girona on saturdays during one month and half. The dates are 25 October and 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 November and 6 December. The festival will be organized in collaboration with Casa Asia.

Imagineindia will present a total of 14 films, feature and short films from India. Although most of the films have participated in Imagineindia Madrid in may, there will be some new films.

“Jin Jin” is made with an encounter with Kenbuchi-cho that succeeded in the making of a gentle town by the power of the picture book, and it is a work made of the grace of many people concerned with the good will to want to contribute to the world.

For receiving this prize, I thank the people who had given it heartily. Thank you so much.

Kenbuchi-cho “It likes two peas in a pod with European rural scenery here, if an original picture museum of the picture book is built here, it matches.” It was initiated due to a woodblock artist 26 years ago now, and the making of village of the picture book started.

When it won an European Film Festival this time, I felt some mysterious relationship and deep emotion.

In addition, a large number of people and think very gratefully.

Rajat Kapoor will be in Madrid for the presentation of the film Ankhon Dekhi at Filmoteca Española.

His visit has been sponsored by Qatar Airways.

Rajat Kapoor had a not so novel way of raising money for his first movie, Raghu Romeo. He was several lakhs short so he sent out e-mails to all his friends pleading for donations. Amazingly, they didn’t hit the delete button but sent cash instead ' and they even forwarded the e-mails to others, who also responded with cash. Says Kapoor, “Desperate times call for desperate measures. I started getting all kinds of support from strangers, from people I had never met and the film was made.”

It would be nice to end that little tale by saying that Raghu Romeo turned into a smash hit, making Kapoor and all his generous friends rich. Sadly, Raghu Romeo, died a quiet death at the box-office. But it did attract attention and was screened at the Piazza Grande section at the 56th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland (the only other Indian film to have made Piazza Grande was Ashutosh Gowatrikar’s Lagaan). The shoestring budget film went on to win awards at half-a-dozen international film festivals. However, Kapoor is still paying back the debts he ran up for Raghu Romeo.

The awards laid the ground for Kapoor’s second full-length film, the controversial Mixed Doubles, which is now showing in theatres around the country. Mixed Doubles is a movie that probably couldn’t have been made a few years ago before the multiplex boom gave birth to a new genre of films aimed at urban India. It’s the story of a couple who has been married for 10 years and are beginning to feel the urge for a bit of adventure in their sex lives. The protagonists, Sunil and Malti (played by actors Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sen Sharma), decide to experiment with ‘swinging’ or wife swapping as it’s otherwise known. “It’s about an urban and modern marriage and the subject of sexuality. I don’t think sexuality should be treated as a heavy thing. It is beautiful. It is not a bold movie, but a sweet love story,” Kapoor insists.

And this time Kapoor didn’t have to pass the hat around for finances. The movie is produced by Sunil Doshi. Says Kapoor, “This time there were no risks for me.”

But Kapoor is not a run-of-the-mill filmmaker who’s eager to make a mainstream, multi-crore Bollywood blockbuster. For a start, he still thinks small. His latest entertainer has been shot on a meagre budget of Rs 60 lakh. “I can’t imagine how a film can cost crores. I always tell those who are trying to make their first film, to make it on 35 mm and to find innovative ways of dealing with the money because there is so much wastage in mainstream cinema,” he explains.

Mainstream cinema, Kapoor insists, is not his cup of tea. “A mainstream film lies about everything, it romanticises everything. I don’t want to lie,” he says.

The film bug caught Kapoor early. He had company at home as his father and brother too liked to watch films four times a day if they got the chance. He says, “I feel everything happened to me by accident, except one. I knew by the time I was 14 that I was going to make films. I did not how, but I was sure that one day I would direct films. Acting just happened and I took it gladly.”

Kapoor has seen a lot of ups and downs during his career as an actor, director and theatreperson. Born in Delhi, he started his career in theatre in 1983 with a group called Chingari that was based in the city. In 1985 he went to study at the Films & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

Over the next decade he went through plenty of lean times. He focused mainly on theatre and it became the driving force of his life. “Being on stage gives you confidence. Acting in movies is very different from acting on stage, but it takes away your inhibitions. On stage I’ve even dropped my pants,” he says.

His luck changed after he appeared as Preity Zinta’s ‘Rohit uncle’ in Dil Chahta Hai. Then, came his role as the child-abusing uncle in Monsoon Wedding. He even makes an appearance in Mixed Doubles ' an experience, which he says, left him exhausted.

“Acting and directing at the same time is very difficult. There have been masters at the art ' Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt and Charlie Chaplin. As a director you don’t get enough sleep, while as an actor you are supposed to look good in front of the camera. I was worried all the time about the dark circles under my eyes,” he laughs.

Ironically, his next movie is Mithya (meaning lie) for which he will start shooting in July. “I have waited six years to make this film. It’s about a very bad actor who is looking for work. When he gets it, it’s about how involved he gets,” he adds. The cast' It could be Saif Ali Khan, Ranvir Shorey or Arshad Warsi ' is all he will reveal.

If in the 90s there were times when he was short of work, it’s now the opposite. Besides directing his own movies, he's also acting in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate where he plays an industrialist. Kapoor will soon also appear in a Bengali film as Raima Sen’s husband.

In addition, he’s doing advertisements and endorsing brands like Raymonds and Aviva Life Insurance. “Basically there’s hardly anything like free time,” he says.

Kapoor reckons that almost everything in his life has happened by chance. The best piece of luck was the way he met his wife Meenal at Churchgate station. “That train ride together to Santacruz led to my present life and I can never rid myself of the feeling that if she hadn’t gone to town that evening to see a film, and had I not been doing whatever I was doing there, we would never have met.” And, then, he adds thoughtfully, “We would never have known each other, and two beautiful creatures ' Rabia and Vivan ' would not have existed,” says Kapoor referring to his eight-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, with whom he likes to spend his leisure time.

As Kapoor says, life’s a game of chance. And in the last few years, the dice have suddenly started rolling his way.

The boy who grew up never to act again in films has striking similarities with the journey of the ‘reel’ Apu. Many of the incidents shown from Subir’s life reflect Apu’s loss and tragedy in the film. Ardhendu Banerjee plays Subir in his dotage. The actor’s performance is earthy and honest which is much necessary to show the character’s internal conflict.

She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house, eventually getting them into the hands of a publisher. Against the odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet: the first step to discovering her own freedom and challenging the traditions and code of conduct in her village.

As with her other work (Pink Saris, Rough Aunties), master documentarian Kim Longinotto trains her camera on an iconoclastic woman. Salma's extraordinary story is one of courage and resilience, and Longinotto follows her on an eye-opening trip back to her village. Salma has hopes for a different life for the next generation of girls, but as she witnesses, familial ties run deep, and change happens very slowly.

Seventy five year old Gafoor comes from a long line of shepherds, known as Bakerwals in Kashmir. The nomadic lifestyle is all that he has ever known. His life is very challenging. He has to rebuild his house on the mountains in Kashmir every year because of the damage from hostile weather.
Gafoor and his family has to travel from the plains of Jammu to the mountains of Kashmir in summer, covering a distance of almost 300 Kms on foot, and reverse the trip in winter, to graze the herd of 200 animals which include sheep, goats, a cow and a few ponies .

Prominent writer and journalist Dilip D’Souza, draws these narratives together as we try to make sense of stereotypes that persist even today.
Flashpoint is part of a series of films from the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, which seek to revisit the city of Mumbai, twenty years after the communal violence of 1992-93. In a situation where justice has been elusive and the collective amnesia profound, the series attempts to remember and reflect on the events of that tragic period and its aftermath.

The communal violence of December 1992 and January 1993 in Mumbai, India, following the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 changed the city in many ways, reconfiguring its spaces, creating new divides, giving impetus to an on-going politics of hate and fundamentally altering the cosmopolitan fabric of the city. Badalte Nakshe is one of the six films in the Remembering 1992 series created collectively by the students and faculty of the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
Traversing the tenuous realm of children, memory and Bombay’s 1992 communal riots, the film follows Farhana Ashraf, a teacher and a writer in an attempt to explore the constructed histories of two generations. 20 years after the riots, how do the people who were children then remember the lived experience of the riots? Moreover, how do adolescents of the present generation make meaning of these inherited narratives of violence from what they hear and see – through popular culture, text books etc. In an effort to articulate this on-going dialogue with the past and present, the film weave these two threads, bringing to the surface erasures, omissions and the ruptures they entail.

It shows the time of the choice of a future way for the country. In fact the choice was already made in October 1964, when conformist climbers and unprincipled egotists (Volodya) took a lead of the Soviet society and eventually destroyed it. The most charming and human figure of the movie is Alik, played by the famous Russian bard Yuri Vizbor. Alik represents the honest and skeptical part of Soviet society, that didn't have much hope for the bright future and tried to enjoy the life, avoiding ranting and bargaining with the conscience.

The film deals with three school chums, Sergei, Slava and Nikolai. Sergei is returning to Moscow from his hitch in the Army to find that "you can't go home again" Slava is married and has a toddler. Nikolai is doing research at a scientific institute. Nikolai offers to find Sergei a job at the Institute, but Sergei decides to follow in his deceased father's (killed in battle at age 21 in 1943 during the Great patriotic War, aka WWII) footsteps and work at the local power plant.

Sergei finds that his relationships to people have changed. Slava is distanced from them by his marriage and family commitments, but still tries to be "one of the boys" Nikolai works hard, and flirts shamelessly in exchange. Sergei feels alone and uncomfortable, never really sure what he should be doing. He still lives in the same flat with his mother and younger sister, he goes to work each day and studies to be an engineer at night.

The documentary follows the lives of several Roma, two in particular, who have been deported from Germany to Belgrade, and inserted into economic and social situations totally alien to their previous experience. They complain of having all money and valuables confiscated upon arrival.

The two main characters both have very sympathetic stories. The first to be introduced has lost much in being deported, but has managed to buy a car and uses it to earn his livelihood. Hard-working and seemingly a good person, this guy is an example of how many advanced democracies' immigration policies need serious revision (not only Germany's).

The story is simple. A husband's elderly father-in-law comes to visit his daughter and her husband. Unfortunately the wife leaves the city on business for a couple of weeks, and her husband is working on a dissertation at home. The husband is stuck with spending time and hosting the old man. The old man is filled with life, he sings, shouts, and seems to know everything about everything: tobacco, wine. He, basically, never shuts up; but he is kind and friendly. The husband tolerates him, and is happy to make him as comfortable as possible. But the old man starts to really irritate the husband. He always thinks he's right and always goes on and on. He knows 5 languages and has traveled the world, so he has much to say. The story is narrated scarcely by the husband who says the events took place a year ago.

Marlen Martynovich Khutsiev (born October 4, 1925 in Tbilisi) is a Georgian-born Soviet and Russian filmmaker best known for his cult films from the 1960s, which include I Am Twenty and July Rain. He was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1986.

Khutsiev's father, Martyn Levanovich Khutsishvili (the family's original Georgian surname), was a lifelong Communist who was purged by Joseph Stalin in 1937. His mother, Nina Mikhailovna Utenelishvili, was an actress.

Khutsiev studied film in the directing department at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, graduating in 1952. He worked as a director at the Odessa film studio from 1952 to 1958, and worked full-time as a director at Mosfilm from 1965 onwards.

Khutsiev's first feature film, Spring on Zarechnaya Street (1956), encapsulated the mood of the Khrushchev Thaw and went on to became one of the top box-office draws of the 1950s. Three years later, Khutsiev launched Vasily Shukshin "as a new kind of popular hero" by starring him in Two Fyodors. His two masterpieces of the 1960s, however, were panned by the authorities, forcing Khutsiev into something of an artistic silence. Since 1978, Khutsiev has taught film directing master classes at the VGIK.
His 1991 film Infinitas won the Alfred Bauer Prize at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival.

2nd class (29 May 2006) - for outstanding contributions to the development of national cinema and many years of creative activity.
3rd class (25 December 2000) - for outstanding contribution to the development of cinema art.
4th class (9 April 1996) - for services to the state, many years of fruitful work in the arts and culture.

Order of Honour (5 October 2010) - for outstanding contribution to the development of the domestic art of film and many years of creative activity.

The russian director Marlen Khutsiyev will be the Honorary Guest at the present edition of Imagineindia 2014 where he will recieve the "Lifetime Achievement Award". For the present member of Russian Arts Academy it will be the first time in Spain and Imagineindia will pay him respects showing 7 films. However not many in numbers Khutsiyev,s filmography is full of master class films.

The films will be shown at Círculo de Bellas Artes and la Cineteca el matadero.

In the Hindu sacred texts on the history of the universe, Vishnu reincarnated as Krum, turtles, save the Mandara mountains sinking into the ocean. 'The Tortoise, an Incarnation' takes this metaphor to explore the historical legacy of another savior: Mahatma Gandhi. The film carries on an ordinary man, about to retire, which, because of its resemblance to the famous Indian leader, accepts interpret it in a popular television series. When more deeply into the character deviates from the script, and realize their own life failures. A film that works both retail and minimalist as political allegory, exploring social and personal note.

Calcutta 71 is a movie against violence and corruption and it is composed by four tales of renowned writers, each one different from another, but all connected together to perform a powerful statement. The stories are of Manik Bandopadhyay, Probodh Sanyal, Samaresh Basu and others.

Hot testimony of the political turmoil of the seventies, Calcutta 71 suggests reveal the stark reality of the inhabitants of Calcutta through intense moments reminiscent of Chris Marker's La Joi. It is said that they were getting images to compose the film since 1966. It premiered in 1972 with a huge hit with audiences.

Venkaiah (Vasudeva Rao) and his son Kistaiah (Narayana Rao) lives in a village.

Venkaiah lives in a queer world of his own. They have learnt to conquer hunger and

are mentally strong. They consider the poor farmers are fools to work for the rich and

suffer. Kistaiah wants to marry Nilamma (Mamata Shankar). The father does not like

the marriage. Kistaiah refused and married Nilamma.

Nilamma tries to control the family. Venkaiah does not change. Kistaiah stands

between them. There is bitterness in the family. In course of time Nilamma conceives.

One day, they find Nilamma in acute pain. The father refuses to call a midwife and

Nilamma dies. They decide to conduct funeral rites to Nilamma. They go begging

around the village and gather some money and decide to spend it on drinks.

Krishna makes a living being an statue while Rasu sells masks in the street. The movie tells about the aspirations of Krishna, Rasu and his friends.

The objective: to initiate a mass hunger strike to demand a fair redistribution of land. After the courage shown by the walkers, the Indian Government, concerned about showing the country as emerging economic power and global epicenter of mysticism, will be forced to respond.

The objective : to initiate a mass hunger strike to demand a fair redistribution of the land.

These warriors without weapons consider that the personal sacrifice, discipline and suffering are better tools than the rifles, to produce social change. They know that exposure to the violence of the opponent without revenge involves great dangers, but that this action is better than tons of preaching.

It is a country known for daffodils, a passion for rugby, wonderful choirs, coal mining, Ryan Giggs, a unique language and place names that, when pronounced properly, could clear a throat.

And it is here, amid the charming valley-laden land of Wales that emanates an enchanting tale of a Romani girl called Eldra Roberts. Her story was captured in the 2002 film ‘Eldra’ which won five BAFTAs Cymru (British Academy Film and Television Awards for Wales) as well as numerous international awards.

The film is based on Eldra’s life in the 1930s and set near the picturesque Snowdonia region where Eldra grew up in the village of Bethesda on the River Ogwen. Born in 1917 into a musical Romani family, she was a direct sixth generation descendant of Abram Wood, thought to be head of the most famous Romani family in Wales in the early 18th century.
