I see videos ruined by bad lighting every single day.

The message is good, the enthusiasm is great, and the sound quality is superb… but the moment the video comes up I switch it off because I can’t see the person talking or I can but it looks like they are broadcasting from a dark dungeon.

As we teach in our iMM List Building Training Videos, building a list or database is about collecting names… And if you truly want to become successful then you need to do it the right way.   To start this discussion, let’s focus on three philosophical practices that will serve you well:

1.  Adopt the philosophy of Giving First.  Let me ask you this:  Don’t you make your bigger buying decisions based upon trust from advisors?  Think about it… your real estate agent, your accountant, your lawyer, etc.  And chances are that those people began to earn your trust by giving you some free advice BEFORE you became their client.  It’s no different in building your business.  As a home business professional, and I mean professional, you need to practice the Give First  mentality…  as that’s what builds trust (both consciously and subconsciously) with your prospective business partners.

2.  Look to Build Relationships with prospects before they become clients… and you do that by Building Trust.

3.  Serve Not Sell - this attitude will serve you well in your advertising and your ongoing assistance to the members who join your business.  If you serve, the sales WILL come.

OK… now there our three central concepts you must use to build an effective list:

1.  Make sure your Websites, Lead Capture and Landing Pages, Blogs, etc. brand YOU.  As we teach in the iMM Personal Branding Training Videos, remember, people buy from those they trust.  You cannot build relationships by remaining anonymous.  In your ad copy and material you provide your visitors, provide value and let it be known you are here to help.  When trust begins to develop, you’ll get the optins.

2.  An optin form must be present on any site to capture the data and begin to build your list.  Follow these guidelines with your optin forms:

• Place your optin form above the fold… meaning visitors do not have to scroll down to see the form
• Make your optin form LOUD.  It should be easy to see with clear instructions like:  CLICK HERE
• Provide something of value like an e-book, video series, email series of tips, etc.

3.  You’ll need a “repository” for the names and email addresses you’ll collect.  Some mlm, network marketing and business opportunity companies provide this.  It may be OK to start there, but we’d highly recommend that you capture this data using a 3rd party service.  That way, you own the data and you can communicate with your prospects and customers freely because you’ve built your own permission based list.

Lastly, as you build and manage your list, keep in mind this Golden Rule:  Treat Your List with Respect and They Will Become Loyal to You in the Process.

Technorati has been conducting annual studies on blogging since 2004.

Their recent report, the ‘State of the Blogoshere’, can be found on their website and it’s a great resource. Now I’m just going to point out a few key highlights of the report but its pretty detailed so if you happen to be interested in trends and stats like I am, then I recommend you check it out.

In June 2008, Technorati tracked blogs in 81 languages and bloggers from 66 countries. Bloggers are collectively creating close to one million blog posts every day.

Needless to say, blogging is here to stay.

In a specific section of their report, the What and Why of Blogging, it mentions professional and business bloggers.

It states that:

• The majority of corporate and professional bloggers have seen a positive impact as a result of their blog. Half are now better known in their industry.
• Blogging has brought many unique opportunities to these bloggers that otherwise would not have been available.
• One in four have been invited to participate in an event as a result of their blog
• One in five have contributed to a print publication as a result of their blog
• And almost as many have found themselves on TV and/or on the radio.

Can you begin to see and envision the benefits and impact blogging can have on your own business?

Businesses, small and large, are increasingly adding blogs to their marketing repertoire. Search Engines love them…peope love to read them. What could be better?

The benefits of starting a blog and blogging on a regular basis go on and on. The biggest ‘take away’ from this is that blogs are now mainstream and a fantastic opportunity for new leads and building relationships online.

1. How To Start a Blog: Set up a wordpress.org self-hosted blog instead of a free one like blogger.com. You’ll have a lot more flexibility and features this way. Blogger is fine for a personal blog or hobby but not the best choice for your business.
2. Register yourname.com and place your wordpress blog there so that you can begin to brand yourself - stand out from the crowd.
3. Content is King! The most important part of owning a successful blog that Search Engines will love and that will have your readers coming back to your blog again is to constantly add fresh, quality content.
4. Adding social media links and buttons like the ones below this post make it easy for visitors to bookmark and share your quality content. This can easily be done using one of the many social media wordpress plugins available. I show you how to do this in Rockstar Blogging.
5. Keep these three simple but powerful words in mind: Underpromise and Overdeliver. This means giving people more then they expect. The results of adding this philosophy into your blogging and your business in general can be remarkable.
