Kitchen City Frozen Meals Review

During the lockdown a few months ago, we’ve done a lot of ordering our food via online instead of cooking. It’s fast, easy and safer since we don’t have to go out to buy groceries and also minimizes our contact with people to avoid getting the virus. Among all those food deliveries that we’ve tried, our favorite is Kitchen City Frozen Meals. There’s a lot of varieties to choose from, there’s Beef, Pork, Chicken, Fish, Veggies, Pasta sauce and of course dessert. Their meals are very delicious and for me some of their dishes taste like “lutong bahay”. Also, what we like about it is that because it’s frozen, you can keep the dish much longer (shelf life is indicated in the tub). We usually order food from Kitchen City, good for a week’s worth of food. We just take it out of the freezer then reheat, no more food prep needed. It also helps a lot that I don’t have to think of what food to prepare for my husband’s “baon” at work. Because of the pandemic, my husband no longer eats lunch outside of his work so he has to bring his own food. I just ask him, “what do you want for lunch?”. He will just look at the menu and that’s we will order for his weekly baon for work.

Since it’s just me and my husband at home, a buddy pack is the perfect size for us. But we usually ordered their Family Size, since a portion of it will be for my husband’s lunch at work. If one of us likes a certain dish and the other one doesn’t like or eat that, then we just order a buddy pack. Prices are very reasonable, the buddy pack is 300g (price starts at P135) while the Family size is 600g (prices start at P250).

We have ordered a lot from their menu. and below are some the meals that we have tried recently and those that are marked with "*" are our favorites (meaning repeat orders) and a must try:

*Pork Sinigang - the broth is really good, just the right amount of sourness unlike when I use sinigang seasoning. I can’t tell if something was added into it. Best to reheat on the stove top. Perfect meal for the rainy days.

*Beef Tapa - my husband said that it reminded him of the beef tapa he used to eat when he was in school. I usually paired it with fried egg as per my husband’s request.

*Seafood/vegetable Kare-Kare - We like both types of Kare-kare, even without the bagoong (provided when you order), this dish can stand alone. The taste is similar to that restaurant famous for its kare-kare.

*Beef bistek Tagalog- This one is really good, my husband's favorite. It's topped with big slices of onion and I reheat this also on stove top, It taste better rather than on the microwave.

Pork KC Signature Hawaiian Baby back ribs - you can taste the sweetness of pineapple. Although it's not the fall off the bones kind of baby back ribs , we like really the taste and the big portions even though we just ordered a buddy pack.

Vegetable pinakbet- I like that it has pork toppings slices. We eat this right away and can’t be stored that long in the freezer because some of the veggies were a little mushy after reheating.

*Chicken Tinola- my husband loves tinola and this is no exception, “sabaw pa lang ok na sya” as he commented on this dish.

*Ginataang Langka- this is my personal favorite. Since my husband’s is allergic to anything with gata, I can only order a buddy pack. Me, who grew up eating my mom’s (who’s a bicolana) cooking, this dish is really close to my heart. It’s a new twist to my mom’s cooking especially the pork toppings and just the right amount of “anghang” made me miss my mom’s cooking.

Pork Igado - I’m not familiar with Igado so I’m not sure what to expect with the taste. But this is one is a thumbs up for me in terms of taste and “hindi sya tinipid sa ingredients (pork)”.

*Frozen Leche Flan- I love Leche flan, period. This is one dessert that I don’t like sharing with others, hahaha!!!. Who wouldn’t resist this melts in your mouth creamy goodness. Just the perfect amount of sweetness. If I’m not pre-diabetic, I swear I can eat the whole can of this yummy dessert.

What made me a repeat customer, well aside from the delicious meals, their customer service is very prompt. They are very active in answering any queries or concerns. They will never make you wait that long for deliveries. I also love the fact that they lowered their delivery fee to P75 or sometimes they offer it for free (with a minimum purchase).

For the past ten years, I have been using the same popular moisturizer for my face as part of my anti-aging beauty regimen. Although it really did wonders of maintaining the youthfulness of my face (aside from my mother's good genes), I was beginning to feel that it's no longer effective for me. So I began looking for the next best thing. As I was browsing the Beauty section at SM Store at Megamall, a sales person approached me to try her product which is "Instant Glow Morocco Argan Oil". Since I've been hearing a lot about this oil from Morocco, I became very interested in what she was offering. At first, I was very skeptical about the efficacy of the product, but after she put a few drops at the back of my hand and gently rubbed it, the oil was immediately absorbed by my skin. I was amazed that there was no greasiness and my skin felt supple. I found out that it's not only for the face, but it's also for the hair and body, an all around product, which is good. I also like the sweet scent, it's not that strong unlike some other beauty products. I became very interested, so I purchased the bigger bottle which is 100ml, for the price of P1,199.75. Luckily for me, the store was on sale that day, so I got it with a 20% discount, great savings!

Downsizing - Moving from a house to a condo

June 12, Independence Day, what a special date to finally move to our new place. It wasn’t intentional, we totally forgot what day it was since we’ve been busy packing in the last two months. We’ve moved houses three times and this is our first time to live in a condominium.. Coming from a big house, we’re now downsizing to a 47.6 sq.m. , one bedroom, 1 toilet & bath condo space.

Why did we move

It was a sudden decision. Right after New Year’s Day, my brother, whom we’re sharing rent in the house, have found his own place and decided to move out. He got himself a condominium unit which is also very near our place. He encouraged us to get a unit for ourselves since it’s in a very desirable location, close to work and establishments. We were hesitant at first, but as days pass by, living in a three bedroom, two T& B, a three-car garage and a garden, was too much for me and my husband to maintain. Security also became a concern. Most of the time, I was living alone in the house since my husband is always out of town for work. I no longer have a dog for companion (and bodyguard) and I don’t think my cats can protect me from bad guys😂😂😂. After a few months, we decided it’s time to make the big move.

Downsizing, everything must go

Since we came from a big house, the lack of space in the condo became a major problem for us. I asked myself, How do I fit all of our things into that cramped unit?” Good thing that my nephew suggested that I sell my things thru OLX , which I did, problem solved. I was able to dispose some of my furniture and appliances. We moved to our new place bringing only our bed (which is fairly new), one chair and our personal belongings. The money I earned from selling my old stuff were used to buy new furniture for the new place.

Keep, Throw-away & Donate

For sentimental reasons, clearing out your personal belongings is the hardest thing to do when you’re moving out. I have accumulated a lot of things over those 8 years (not including those still unopened boxes that came from your last move that was still stacked in the storage) of living in a house. Clothes that I’ve kept for years thinking that I can wear it once again if lose weight. And oh, my shoes, I haven’t worn some of them (they are still in boxes). I have to look at it one by one to see what goes into the keep, throw-away or donate boxes. It took me a while before I was able to let go of these “precious” things.

Saying goodbye

Moving out day, my siblings came to help us with the cleaning up. It was such a happy and sad moment for me. I had an emotional attachment to our house. This is where I’ll be leaving my beloved dog Pongo, under the big Sampaloc tree in our garden is his final resting place. I'm leaving also my cats since pet ownership is not allowed in the condominium building. But before I left, I made a promised to them that I’ll get them someday, no matter what. I said my goodbyes to our house caretaker, Aling Selda, whom I will miss dearly.

New place, new memories

As we settled into our new place, living with no appliances and furniture became a challenge for us. I have to turn down some of my friends who live nearby who wanted to visit us (remember, we only have one chair😂😂😂). We can’t cook and do our groceries (we have have no refrigerator and stove yet) so we eat out of most of the time. Partly, it’s my fault. I’m taking my sweet time looking for the right furniture and appliances that would be suitable for our limited space. I just want our place to be perfect for this might be our forever home.

I’m now officially a cat lady

It's been a while since I have written about my cat "Hidey" eversince my dog, "Pongo", died. A lot have happened during this past year and I'm happy to announce that Hidey is now a "Mom". She gave birth exactly a year ago, to four adorable kittens, we didn't know that she was pregnant during that time. A few weeks after Pongo died, she had been acting strange and her body seemed itchy all the time. My brother thought that maybe she had fleas, so he bought her a flea powder but nothing changed. So I searched online about it and that's where I learned that she's ready to mate, OMG!!! We thought that since are no male cats within the our compound, it's impossible that she'll get pregnant, we were wrong...Two months had passed, after I returned from an out-of-town trip, Hidey was already missing. I thought she was just sulking because I wasn't giving much attention to her since I was very busy attending to my eldest brother's wake who passed away last year. Two weeks had passed and still no sign of her, until one day, she suddenly showed up infront of my door, meowing for food. So I gave her food, after that she suddenly disappeared and I can't find her again. My husband and I kept looking for her, since we felt that maybe she had already given birth. While we were cleaning our yard, we heard kitten meowing that came from side of our door. When we got there, we saw four dirty kittens living inside that small deep corner of our house. We managed to get all the four kittens out of it just in time before Hidey returned for her litters. I bathed all four of them, since they all look ugly to me at that time.It was only after a month that I learned that Hidey had two boys and two girls, we named them BLAKE "Big Boy" because he is the biggest of them all, BRAWN "Cry Baby" because he had always tears in his eyes, GREY "Shy", she is always alone and "Little Girl" Lily, she was very little compared to other kittens.

It was exactly a year ago, today is their birthday, they grew up healthy and good looking cats. They always run around (destroying my plants) and sometimes looking for prey (poor bird and mice).

I admit, I'm not a cat person, but having these cute little furries have made me turn into a proud cat lady . . Meeoowww🐱

What to do with your old stuff piling up in your storage, year after year? Sell it! just like what I did.

During the time that I was working, I accumulated a lot of good quality furniture, appliances, clothes and shoes. After years of use and abuse, or simply because, I got bored with it, they were relegated to the storage, for future use or to be given away to relatives and friends. My storage is a vacant third room in our house which is, now full of junk. If we have relatives spending an overnight in our house, they slept on couches or we share them our room, that's when I thought of finally clearing up the room. Upon seeing all my old stuff in the room, I began asking myself, why did I buy so many things? what will I do with them? My nephew suggested that I post and sell it at OLX.( I guess everyone knows what OLX is). I've seen their commercial and I was thinking who would want to buy my old stuff? Is there a market for this?. I've never done any online shopping, much more sell items online to strangers (yes, I have trust issues especially to people I don't know!). Then, my nephew suggested that he will create an account for me, he took photos of my stuff and posted it. I did all the descriptions since it was my stuff and he helped me with the pricing. I thought we'd be selling it for only a couple of pesos since these are old and used, but when he mentioned "thousand pesos" for one item, I asked him " Are you sure someone will buy this? I was so skeptical that it will sell. A few minutes after he hit the button "Submit", I already got multiple texts inquiring about the items we posted, in a matter of 15 minutes (a lot of haggling happened) I sold my first item at OLX.

Of course, not everyone, can sell their items that fast, (I'm just lucky!) but with good presentation (your photos), realistic pricing and a lot of patience, I'm sure it will sell in time. Here's what I learned and a few tips on how to make a sell at OLX.

1. POST GOOD/CLEAR ORIGINAL PHOTOS

Make sure that all the photos that you will be using are good quality images (not necessarily HD), I've seen some photos posted at OLX that are blurred, not original (meaning they just got photo from the Internet) and not appealing. You should make a good impression so that buyers gravitate towards your ad, even though there are multiple sellers with the same item or category, if your photo stands out, chances are, they will choose you. Post as many photos per item, so that buyers will have an idea how your product looks like. It should not look good only in photos but also when you show it to them personally. That makes it sell.

2. DESCRIBE YOUR PRODUCT WELL

Give a detailed specifications of what you're selling, (i.e.where is it made, what's the measurement) give information that will help the buyer better understand your product.

3. GIVE REALISTIC PRICING

A product/item will sell on its own, if it's well presented and the quality is really good even though it's priced high. One item that I posted at OLX was priced almost the same amount as the original price, but because the item that I was selling was of high quality and almost good as new, it was immediately sold. The buyer knew that it was good bargain since he will be paying more if he buys a new one. I guess he's in the business of buy and sell and he knew that he could still get a substantial profit from selling it.

4. MAKE TIME TO REPLY TO ALL QUERIES OF YOUR PROSPECTIVE BUYERS

When I was looking for a real estate, I sent texts messages to multiple sellers at OLX inquiring about the property. Only 2 out of 10 were able to reply, and it took them three days before responding and I totally forgot, what am I inquiring about. As a seller, as much as possible I try to answer every inquiries, from there, I could sense if the buyer is really interested.

4. KNOW YOUR BUYERS

For the past months that I've been selling at OLX, I discovered that there are three types of buyers:

a. Serious Buyers - these are the buyers who would ask questions about your product, they want to know the history and why are you selling it. They provide you their personal info (name and address) when you ask for it. They haggle for the price and not ask you what's your last price on their initial conversation with you. They immediately set-up a date, time & place for your meet-up or if he/she is going to view it at your house. They constantly remind you of your meeting date.

b. Reseller - usually their initial message to you is "what's your last price?" (although not everyone). If you gave them a small discount, they will not reply to you at all or they would tell you that they are only willing to pay this amount (almost half of the selling price). They would enumerate all sorts of negative things to tell about your product like, "oh! the item you're selling is already old, I'm only paying you this amount" even though I've mentioned that I only had it for two years and the photo showed a very well maintained and almost good as new item. They will do everything that will make you lower your price to their liking since they knew that your item has a market and can sell very well at a much higher price.

c. Poser - I almost fell victim for this type of buyer during my first few weeks of selling at OLX (oh, I forgot, it happened to me again a few weeks ago). You would think that they are serious buyers because more or less they talk or send messages to you like any serious buyers. I've noticed that they would ask for your exact address even before they ask questions about the item you're selling. As per advice of my husband, I don't give away the number of my house, I just tell them the street and a landmark, surprisingly, serious buyers, were able to locate me even though I only gave out those information. One time, a buyer asked me for my location, I replied giving that info plus I've mentioned that my place is a block away from the police precinct (which is true), guess what? I never got a response. Recently, a buyer whom I thought was a serious one, made me wait for two hours for nothing. They were going to pick up an item from my house and she kept on sending text messages to me, to wait for them since they are still getting a gate pass so that they can bring the item to their condo unit. She set-up the date and time for that meet-up but never showed up and did not offer any excuse, just like that. From then on, I became very cautious when dealing with buyers.

One important tip: Always have someone with you when meeting with potential buyers, tag along a relative or a friend. Although they are buyers, they are still considered strangers since you don't know them personally. If they requested a meet-up, suggest a crowded place, like a mall, as a meeting place. I've heard stories about people missing or worse, dead, after meeting a buyer. I'm not trying to scare you, but for me, it's better to be safe than sorry.

It's been four months now since I've started selling at OLX. Every week, I find items to sell from cleaning our storage. I'm now on the last few items, hopefully, I'd be able to sell everything. In a couple of months, we will be moving to a much smaller place and there will be no room for junk. I guess the only item that we will be bringing is our newly bought bed and some lighting and the rest will be all new. I cannot divulge to you how much I earned from selling my old stuff, but I'm pretty sure that it's enough to buy us a furniture for the living or dining room or appliances for my new kitchen. After everything is sold, my account will be temporarily idle, who knows, a few months or a year from now, some of my existing personal items will make its way again to the storage (oops, I don't have one!), I mean, straight to OLX.

Start cleaning your storage or better yet, the whole house. Even if you don't find much to sell, your mom will be very happy that finally, you cleaned your room, who knows, she might give you that gadget or shoes that you've been dreaming of. Where’s the Caldereta mix? I asked the sales person as I was browsing the shelves in a supermarket. My husband requested for a Beef Caldereta for our Media Noche and I can’t seem to find that mix among the Del Monte mixes that I usually use in my recipes. I have started to wonder if everyone will be serving this dish for their New Year celebration. As much as I don’t want to use any other brand, I settled for the Knorr Kaldereta mix which is in powder form unlike the Del Monte brand. I haven’t used this mix before so I still add some tomato sauce to the recipe and to my surprise it turns out well.

Happy New Year to everyone! I know most of us have gained a few pounds from all those post holiday parties that we've been to, so it’s time to hit the gym again. Congee or “Lugaw” in Tagalog is one of my favorite comfort food during rainy days. Its a hearty meal, even if it’s just a plain congee. Daing na bangus or marinated fried milkfish has been always on the breakfast menu in most Filipino restaurants. It is served with rice and usually accompanied with tomatoes and salted egg. Milkfish are harvested in fish ponds and if you are to buy one, the best variety are those that are raised in Dagupan. I remember when I was a kid, my mom would clean, debone and butterfly the milkfish she had bought in the market. Nowadays, boneless and marinated milkfish are already available in the supermarkets, but I still prefer to make my own marinade for my daing na bangus. Since in this recipe the milkfish is marinated in vinegar, it can be kept in freezer for days, you just need to thaw it before frying it.
