Sheridan Medical Clinic, On Un Dia Sin Fronteras

DENVER - Sheridan Health Services will be on Un Dia Sin Fronteras with Tim Paynter on Monday, March 24th, 2014.

Representatives of the clinic will discuss the need to have health insurance. They will also speak about how to gain access to medical services.

Many people have yet to take advantage of the Obama Health Care Reform measures. The lag is especially large in the Latino community. No wonder, there is a chasm of distrust in the administration over record deportations and strong immigration enforcement. Hence, many people are afraid or distrustful of the system.

Unfortunately, undocumented immigrants won't qualify for Obama Care, as it is called. They can still find access to health care through special clinics like Sheridan Medical. Talk show host, Tim Paynter will discuss issues of access and health with clinic representatives.

Driver's Licenses Likely To Pass In Colorado

An effort to grant driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants is making fast headway in the Colorado congress. A group called Licencias Para Todos, Licenses for Everyone, has teamed up with Colorado state senator Jessi Ulibarri, with the legislation.

There are many benefits to granting licenses to undocumented people, the group says. First, every immigrant will have to take the drivers written and practical exam, the group says. This is important because Colorado has some odd driving rules which all drivers should be aware.

A second benefit to the new law will be the influx of revenues to the state tax coffers. Only those who have filed their income tax returns will be able to qualify for a license. While many immigrants have been paying taxes for a long time, others have a lot of work to do in order to qualify for the law.

A third benefit is a likely lower insurance rate for Coloradoans. When all drivers are insured, companies don't have to pay claims for uninsured drivers. A license will help immigrants obtain insurance.

Law enforcement supports the licensing of undocumented immigrants, as well. Officers can be more efficient during traffic stops if they can identify immigrants with a license just like they do citizens. This leaves officers available to service other types of calls.

The license can't be used to vote or to board an airliner. While not obvious, all non-citizens will have a new marked license. The purpose of the license is to specifically allow people to drive, not to serve as identification to enter federal public buildings or other sensitive locations. However, immigrants must provide a valid I.D. in order to qualify for the license.

If the law passes, it won't be until August of 2014 until the new licenses are available. That provides the Colorado Department of Revenue which administers licenses an opportunity to set application fees and procedures. The licenses will only be available to Colorado residents.

Uribe spent his youth studying folkloric music in his native Colombia. After coming to the US, Uribe formed a brass band. Rather than play Glen Miller melodies, Uribe mixed traditional BIG BAND brass sounds with the folkloric beats of his native country.

Dreamer At Risk

Sigifredo Pizana is a 19 year old youth who is about to be very alone in a country that has mostly failed to open it’s arms to bright young immigrants. Sigi’s father was stopped by local law enforcement. Soon thereafter the elder Pizana had a date with ICE. After being in the country 9 years and 3 months, the elder Pizana was eight months short of the ten years which might have given him some hope. Rather than spend the family resources on fighting, the family has decided to go to Mexico. That is, everyone but Sigi.

At 19, Sigi was enrolled in college with a dream of studying actuarial accounting. When the family fell into crises, the youth had to drop his college classes. But it was about to get a lot worse. Soon, mom and the rest of the family plan to call it quits on the American Dream and follow the elder Pizana to Mexico. That leaves Sigi to fend for himself.

Sigifredo Graduating With Honors

When people talk about getting in the back of the line, they don’t realize what the phrase entails. In the first place, for many undocumented immigrants, there is no line. Even if there were, getting in back of the line means dividing families often for decades. Those who go to their native land can’t return and those who remain in the US can’t leave. With border crossing becoming difficult and expensive, upwards of $3,000 in many cases, the family remains apart for many years.

Sigifredo very much wants to take the steps necessary to become a citizen of this country. After graduating with honors with AP classes, this bright youth has demonstrated he has something to give to the country. If he leaves, he will be part of the world market which competes against the US. Most people agree, it is better he stay and become part of the fabric of future generations.

You can listen to Sigifredo as he talks to talk show host Tim Paynter on Un Dia Sin Fronteras. Joining the discussion will be Richard Hartwell, an Anglo who sides with immigrant youth. Richard says we need to pass the Dream Act so young people like Sigifredo can continue in the journey in the only country they know.

A Message From Jesse Salmeron:

“Last year, a friend of mine graduated from college with highest honors. He thrived during his collegiate career and he is one of those talented individuals you know is destined for great things. Yet, despite his abilities, he is now working as a day laborer. With all he has to offer, he cannot utilize his education.

He is undocumented and there is nothing he can do about his status.

There are literally millions of stories similar to his; I know many other “Dreamers” like him. I too could have faced this impossible obstacle, but I was one of the fortunate ones. I came to this country undocumented at the age of three but was granted refugee status.

The hopelessness in the eyes of my friends have inspired this story.

I had to write a script that showed the disappointment and pain of their bleak situation. That script is Dreamer.

Even though Joe was raised in the United States for all but the first few years of his life—and considers himself American—he must live with the constant fear of deportation from the country he loves to a place he has never known. The film transcends racial lines and illuminates the immigration debate for what it is: a tragedy that effects all Americans.

Singer Song-Writer Suzanne Morales Stands Up For Dream

Composer and vocalist for the salsa band “La Candela” writes a song for those suffering from a broken immigration system.

“I had no idea someone with the reputation and capabilities of Suzanne Morales would answer my ad seeking vocalists and musicians to perform on my radio show, Un Dia Sin Fronteras, A Day Without Borders” Denver talk show host Tim Paynter said Sunday.

“Suzanne kept writing me to tell me the song was in the works, but it just caught me by surprise!” Paynter continued, elated.

The talk show host had placed an ad in a local on-line news service seeking people who would sing or use their voice in support of immigration reform.

“We say, ‘Strike a note for freedom’” Paynter said.

According to Paynter, the idea was to take some existing songs and change the verses. The first person who applied was a talented 16 year old girl who sang an emotional rendition of “La Bamba” to new lyrics.

“Para cruzar la frontea” she sang. “To cross the border, you need a lot of money and a good coyote”.

Paynter said it was a great first start in what has been an out-pouring of support for Dream students and immigrants facing the injustice of a broken immigration system.

“You can imagine how surprised I was when the winner of the ASCAPlus award for top Latina composer, Suzanne Morales, showed up at my door.” Paynter said. The composer has placed songs on 6 prime time TV shows in 2009 and 2010.

“When I told Suzanne about the project she became very excited” Paynter continued. “She went to work right away!”

Paynter said Suzanne, who is the child of an immigrant brought to the US from the Colombian plains when he was 17, was stricken with the injustice of the system. The singer-song writer had an immediate

understanding of the plight of the undocumented, after growing up with her missionary father who worked throughout Latin America when Suzanna was a youth.

The song writer said she was not up for marching or protesting, at least not yet, but she could write a song for those who fear going to church and to school because they may be picked up by an aggressive immigration enforcement policy on the part of the Department of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). With the signing of the Secure Communities Memorandum by outgoing Gov. Bill Ritter, life for undocumented immigrants has become dangerous in Colorado.

Morales collaborated with local musicians Manuel Molina (Peru) Lead Guitar, Manuel Gascon (Mexico) Electric Base, and Frank Ayala (United States) with percussion using Home Studio.

Paynter said the song will air on Un Dia Sin Fronteras on Monday, June 13th, 2011 at noon, Mountain Standard Time. The radio station is 1150 am. Deandra Gamez to Appear On Un Dia Sin Fronteras

One of the stars of the vigil at the Arizona state capitol in Phoenix is Deandra “DeDe” Gamez. After the most vicious anti-immigrant bill in history was signed by the governor, a vigil was held at the state capitol. For over 120 days people manned the vigil site, including singer and song writer Gamez. Gamez collaborated with Tomas Karmelo to write what became a huge hit, “La Calma”.

Gamez has been singing since she was a tot. She has a velvet voice and a great sense of harmony and rhythm. La Calma became the theme for a protest campaign that continues to this day. Most recently, Sen. Russell Pearce, the architect of SB 1070, was forced into a run-off election after angry voters rejected his anti-immigrant politics. Promise Arizona adopted the song to promote it’s voter registration initiative.

Comments: We are living in difficult times when an uneducated population refuses to accept the realities that exist. Instead, they insist on getting even for a migration that was invited through loose borders over many years. Without the contribution of undocumented workers this country would not have been able to feed it’s self. Now, with the economy tight, a temporary condition, the foolish wish to wreak havoc on the undocumented workers who built the houses, harvested the crops and made Colorado a great place to live. We must reach out to the “Wal-Mart” community, that is the average Joe who would vote for fundamental fairness if he only were honestly advised. We hope you will join us in the Educating America Project which seeks to inform people about what is really happening in the immigrant communities, not what the Republicans want you to believe.

It was on the reluctant vote of Representative Robert Ramirez (R-Westminster), considered an advocate for Colorado Latinos, House Bill 126 granting in-state tuition to undocumented youth was sent to it’s grave. When undocumented youths find a school to admit them, they must pay out-of-state tuition. Since most of the youths come from poor families, the cost of college proves an impassable barrier. With no avenue left, they are forced into the same low wage jobs and dead end paths which have imprisoned their fathers and mothers. In the alternative, after Colorado pays to educate the students in K-12 grade, the students leave the state in search of a better life in a friendlier place. Colorado tax payers lose the benefit of their bargain as the state's educated populace drops and the state falls in it’s ability to educate the people who live within it’s borders.

House Republicans made it clear this is not to be a friendly place for undocumented youth or their parents.

“On this issue there are no shades of gray. Our founders say we are a country of laws. Lady justice has a blindfold on. Our founders were very careful, we will be a country of laws. I cannot set that aside because of individual stories.” Said one house Republican, whose cold words cut like a whip into the hearts and souls of the youth who gathered to hear the vote.

Breaking: Colorado House Fails Undocumented Youth, No To In-State Tuition - Page 2

The over-riding argument against passage was the fact the students, through no fault of their own, are “illegal”. If Colorado approves in-state tuition, then Colorado will become a mecca for undocumented immigrants.

The argument is based on ignorance about what compels undocumented workers to come to Colorado in the first place. For most of them, it is hunger and poverty beyond comprehension that forces them to risk their lives in a border crossing on their way to one of the wealthiest states in the wealthiest nation in the world. It is the privilege of the rich to chose places to live based upon their parent’s aspiration for their children. The parents of undocumented youths come to feed their families, not find the best place for their children to matriculate.

Sadly, Colorado Republicans may have pounded the last nail in the coffin for many Colorado colleges. With the state scrambling to make up for massive cuts in education, undocumented youths could have added a critical $4 million dollars in college tuition. To the extent some colleges may close or classes be canceled, the Republican vote to maintain education for citizens and permanent residents who “have done it the right way” may have in reality killed the chance of an education for even citizen children.

"Over the past year people from across Colorado have sent tens of thousands of emails and letters into the legislature urging them to support Colorado ASSET, seven newspapers from all over Colorado have endorsed Colorado ASSET. Yet, our legislators still have a difficult time finding their way to ending an unjust system," Jenny Kraska, executive director of the Colorado Catholic Conference. Kraska is on the Higher Education Access Alliance (HEAA) steering committee which helped write the proposed law.

The Republican vote is a continued slap in the face to foreign investors from South of the border seeking friendly places to invest their funds because of an undeclared war in Mexico. The state of Arizona recently failed a new round of anti-immigrant laws in 2011 because the reputation of the state as anti-Latino had cost businesses billions of dollars after passage of the most conservative anti-immigrant law in history, SB 1070, which went into effect in July of 2010. Voters are close to having adequate signatures to recall Arizona Senator Russell Pearce who continues to sponsor anti-immigrant legislation. The Republican Party's declared war on undocumented workers is proving costly, a lesson some members of the Colorado House had taken into account when they cast their party line votes.

Jenny, who has been a Rock of Gibraltar for Rights for All People (RAP), an organization which battles for basic human rights in Colorado, now finds herself fighting to remain with her children in the US. Jenny was kept in a private prison-for-profit operated by GEO Corp for 34 horrible days. Putting people in jail in facilities operated by private contractors hides the true cost of imprisonment since GEO fronts the money to build the facility and then makes it back on a per-bed occupied basis.

Allowing private contractors to imprison those residing under American skies has always been controversial since the government is delegating it’s power to abrogate liberty. What makes the prison industry evil is their advocacy for additional incarceration. In order to fill their beds, companies lobby legislatures to pass stringent bills which require the jailing of harmless people.

Jenny is not a run risk, she is exactly where she wants to be. She is not a risk to society as she has never committed a violent crime. Yet, due to increased immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) actions, including the connection between local police and ICE called secure communities, a record number of immigrants found themselves detained and in deportation proceedings last year. As the Obama administration calls for immigration reform, ICE has stepped up it’s enforcement and deportation efforts bragging about deporting the largest number of undocumented workers in history last year.

RAP says Wells Fargo Bank, which markets services to the Hispanic community, has a large ownership interest in GEO. Hence, when Hispanics make a buck for Wells Fargo, they are putting money into the pockets of GEO, since the bank allegedly urges clients to invest in the private prison company. The injustice of making money over the misery of others cuts against constitutional guarantees.

Organizers at RAP have scheduled a community meeting for Thursday, April 28th, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Aurora West College Prep Academy 10100 East 13th Avenue in Aurora Colorado. Lisa Duran, RAP’s leader, asks those who want to know about the connections between private prisons, corporate sponsors and lobbying for increased detentions, please attend. Colorado citizens are fed up with a slow moving congress and have proposed a short version of the Dream Act, sort of. They call it Colorado Asset, or SB 126, because the idea is to keep the brightest people within the state of Colorado rather than sending them somewhere else. Under the current system, after educating some of the brightest minds, the youths leave the state. Unfortunately, the youth of undocumented immigrants not only are deprived college scholarships in the Rocky Mountain State, they must also pay out of state tuition rates even if they have lived in Colorado most of their lives. That makes higher education nearly impossible.

The new law will grant youth of undocumented workers in-state tuition rates but will still deprive them of most financial aid. After Texas passed a similar bill the revenues to the state from tuition increased by $17 million dollars! As proposed, the law that will help children who were brought to Colorado as young as one year of age won’t cost Colorado a dime, and will increase college coffers at a time when funds are desperate. Not only will the students add diversity to the class room, their tuition contributions will likely make it possible for US citizen children to go to school. Unlike the Dream Act, the law will not provide any path to citizenship.

Crappy Jobs Caused by Plutocracy and Austerity

It is so true, and now it is time to invite all people into the job market, that includes the children of uncodumented workers, who were too young to understand what an unauthorized border crossing meant. All they were looking for was the next meal, certainly a long way off for them! Once these youths grow up American they find themselves unable to get into many schools, then find themselves lost in poverty. Little is left for them but gangs and a life of crime or extreme poverty.

The answer in Colorado is Colorado Asset. It is a program which will allow for students to get in-state tuition, but the students won't qualify for most forms of student aid. They will have to pay for college on their own dime. A similar effort passed in Texas with a $20 million gain to the school, an issue for Colorado!

Your Voice Required: Rebuild Colorado's Economy From the Bottom Up

A good way to increase the tax base is to include our undocumented immigrants in the party. They would add millions of dollars in revenues and government paid services like auto mobile and business registration fees were we to be so generous as to take their money.

Just allowing undocumented students to get in-state tuition could add $1.7 million to the economy and colleges the first year if one study done in Texas where a similar bill was passed is correct. Today, on the Spanish radio program Suavacitas del Recuerdo, http://suavacitas.blogspot.com/ students talked about the Dream Act (Dream Into Reality or DIR) and how it would make a positive impact on the economy and many lives.

I find it odd we are out searching for outside revenue when we are not willing to take the revenues that our immigrant population wishes to contribute in their ordinary lives as new residents in the Rocky Mountain state.

Colorado Takes Leadership Role

The State of Colorado took a leadership role in immigration reform by not passing draconian measures which near by Arizona passed. The credit goes to Democratic senators who refused to buy into the right-wing rhetoric of the Republican legislature. The laws proposed by Republicans would have made immigrants a second class community and forced an estimated 170,000 people to flee the state, presumably along with another 300,000 people who are legal citizen family members. After each vote, I talked to some of the Republican senators and got no where. They did not really want to have the discussion in the first place. More than that, they were bent on passing draconian measures which they know are likely unconstitutional or which would have cost the state a mint in legal challenges. Meanwhile, the law makers would earn big headlines.

Until we can elect leadership which is sincerely interested in what is best for the state, rather than what will get their fat mugs in the newspapers, we will never be able to effect meaningful immigration reform. The problem is complicated, it requires a sincere look at what is real and practical, and it requires compromise. Republicans have no interest in reality or compromise but they are very happy with getting their names in the media.

Colorado took a leadership role on immigration reform Wednesday, February 16th, 2011, by defeating two severe anti-immigrant laws. Senate bill SB-54 was a copy cat law which followed Arizona SB 1070, the toughest anti-immigrant law in the history of the US. Colorado’s version of the bill would have granted police officers probable cause to arrest any person they suspected of being undocumented.

The bill was silent as to what an undocumented person looks like, which left detractors concerned about racial profiling. Senate bill SB-129 was a Mandatory E-Verify law for every Colorado business. It was a back-door effort to make Colorado a difficult place for those who are currently working in Colorado to make a living.

The issue of what to do with Colorado’s share of undocumented workers weighed heavily on all of the law makers from both sides of the isle. At the end of the day, a close Democratic majority in the Senate State Veterans and Military Affairs Committee decided Colorado should not go down the same path as Arizona in immigration reform.

As for SB 054, witnesses voiced concerns about having 30,000 beds in jails for eleven million immigrants making the arrest and detention of existing undocumented immigrants unworkable. There is fear immigrants would not report serious crimes perpetrated against them for fear of deportation. Law makers were concerned about the cost of potential law suits. Law enforcement said they preferred to concentrate on violent crime rather than taking on the responsibility for federal immigration enforcement. Then there was the potential fall-out to the Colorado tourist industry as a result of a boycott. Proponents for the bill testified they were tired of all the “illegals” taking their jobs and attending public school.

Regarding e-verify, witnesses told the senate the e-verify system is flawed and complicated to operate, especially for small businesses. False positives cost people who are desperate for a job critical revenue pending resolution of the problems. Even if the program is free, the cost of implementation and compliance with the system is an added burden. Witnesses who testified for the law indicated they were tired of the “illegals from taking our jobs”.

Both measures were voted down in a party line vote. Hans Meyer, policy director of the Colorado Immigrant’s Rights Coalition (CIRC) issued a statement after the hearing:

“We are proud of the members of the Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee, especially Senators Rollie Heath, Bob Bacon, and Betty Boyd, who decided that Colorado does not need an Arizona style immigration enforcement system or a mandatory employment verification system…The economic costs of implementation would be staggering, and exacerbate the already severe budget deficit which is forcing the Governor to cut education and other worthwhile programs.”

Thursday, law makers will consider a bill which will grant in-state tuition to undocumented youth if passed. Currently, the children of undocumented immigrants must pay out-of-state tuition and don’t qualify for scholarships and financial aid. If the bill passes, qualifying students would get in-state tuition hence added needed revenue for schools, but the students still won’t get financial aid or scholarships.

Let’s hope Colorado continues down the road of rational decision making towards the immigrant population. There are good and solid solutions to the immigration problem, but it is not to turn eleven million people into second class citizens as happened in Nazi Germany not so long ago.

should the children of undocumented immigrants get in-state tuition in Colorado? Eleven other states think so!

Brittany Hernandez with the student group Eye Resist speaks passionately about the benefits a proposed law that will allow children of undocumented workers to go to college. Hernandez says it will add to the education budget in Colorado and help keep the brightest people in the state to form the future work force.

A prior law in 2009 was defeated mostly out of concerns for the effect it might have on the Colorado budget. The new law, supported by the Higher Education Access Alliance, will add money to the state’s bottom line rather than detract from it. That is because the 2009 law allowed immigrant students access to schoarlships and financial aid. The new law eliminated those resources for undocumented students. Instead, the youths will get in-state tuition rates only.

The Colorado Immigrants Rights Coalition (CIRC) strongly supports the passage of the bill, as well.

Many people feel the youths of undocumented immigrants should not be penalized for crossing the border without inspection. How can you hold a 1 year old baby responsible for a border crossing? To deny that child a chance at education when a young adult is unfair and short sighted. Having done nothing, the youth deserves the same crack at the apple as other youths get. More, it gives children raised in poverty a chance to break the chains that are too frequently passed from generation to generation.

The Dream Act, a federal law that would allow students to go to school or serve in the military, was defeated in the lame duck session of 2010. Activists are working to revive the legislation which is designed to give all children parity in these separate but equal United States. If it makes it to congress once again, it will pair nicely with Access Colorado, and give children who want to make Colorado a great state a running chance.

Which Way Home, Sin Nombre Document Journey of Undocumented

There are several films which give us a great insight into the journey undocumented immigrants take heading for the US border. Sin Nombre is a work of fiction, but the scenes are realistic and riveting. Which Way Home is a documentary which gives us great insight as to the plight of undocumented children, many left to fend for themselves, as they seek lost parents and the new life in the US.

What compels a 13-year-old child to hop a freight train for a 1,400-mile journey North along the smugglers' route through Mexico and across the U.S. border? How do youths manage the perils of the undocumented underworld including dishonest cops, cold, hunger, and a freight train famous for throwing hitchhikers to their deaths called the Beast? In Rebecca Cammisa’s documentary, Which Way Home, the children tell their heart-wrenching stories as a film crew follows them over the train tops and through the migrant camps along the deadly route.

The documentary, nominated for a 2010 Academy Award under the feature-length documentary category, provides insight into the secret world of undocumented immigrants from a fresh perspective: the children's. We begin meeting youths, mostly Honduran children, as they cross the border from Guatemala into Mexico. There is the well-spoken Kevin, and shy Fito, and Yuriko, “the Dog,” and Jairo and Joselito and Olga and Freddie and Maria and so many more, all traveling without an adult to guard them.

Cammisa spent several years working on this project. After meeting 10-year-old-Jose, abandoned and crying in a youth detention center, she was determined to complete her film, the L.A. Times quotes Cammisa as saying. It was not until she won the Fulbright Scholarship that doors began to open. The Mexican train companies and some authorities began granting Cammisa access to the smugglers' route, Cammisa says in a YouTube interview. There she found the stories of one of the dirtiest little secrets in the lives of the undocumented traveler, which is the children, many left to fend for themselves long before they have the years and maturity to manage.

"Many of you will never return to see your [native] land. Many of you will never return to see your families,” a youth worker at one of the non-profit shelters tells a large group of immigrants seeking a dry bed and a hot meal. “Because you will die on this journey!”

“The [border of the] United States is not where death ends. It is the death!” he tells his riveted audience as he holds up a large bottle of water. “This is not enough water for even three days [in the desert]”.

Despite speaking passionately to dissuade migrants determined to reach the U.S., the volunteer at the shelter dissuades no one, least of all the children, who are incapable of assessing the real and lethal danger they will face. Will the children perish in the desert to become some of the 250 people who die every year? Which of the Children Cammisa follows make it and which don't? Why do these wayward youths put their lives on the line? What happens to all of the children? Cammisa is able to answer most of these questions but neither she nor grieving parents are able to account for all of the children who appear in the film, a tragic reminder of the dangers of the underworld. Suffice it to say, if you run into a doctor named Olga or Freddy years in the future, a lot of people would love to know.

The documentary, in Spanish with English subtitles, is exciting and riveting and tragic and uplifting all at a stroke. It provides a graphic view of what “waiting in the back of the line” to enter the U.S. really looks like, so it is a must see for anyone who wants to be well informed about the reality migrants suffer. More, for immigrant youth thinking about making the trip, there is a strong dose of reality about a rite of passage which many undocumented youth say they would never attempt again.

Sin Nombre, the story of an El Salvado teen hitching a ride on top of freight trains to a better life in the United States, and Which Way Home have a lot in common. Both tell the tragic tale of the migrant traveler from a young perspective. Rebecca Cammisa tells the story through the migrant children in person. Both films are riveting and may rip your heart from your chest. Adding to the pain, while Sin Nombre is a work of fiction, Which Way Home tells it exactly like it is.

All of the pictures in this post are from Which Way Home. I will review Sin Nombre in a future post. Both are great films about a treacherous rite of passage many undocumented workers would prefer to forget.

Second Man Dies, Arizona Refuses Health Care, Gov. Brewer Saves Buck!

Prologue: When news about SB 1070 broke out, most of us thought we were dealing with a rational, although conservative, Arizona legislature. Little did any of us realize the monsters we were really dealing with. Gov. Jan Brewer, Russell Pearce and a host of their cronies are willing to go to extreme lengths to keep themselves in power and to oppress those who are not. I didn’t realize these people would actually go to the point of killing people. The evidence is now in. A man has died because conservatives refused his bone marrow transplant.

If they are willing to kill citizens to save a buck, what are they willing to do for the immigrant community? What will it take from out side to let them know hate has a price? We must at all time maintain a peaceful presence in our peaceful resistance. However, I have concluded, we need to be much more in their faces and much more militant than we have been to date.

A few days ago, governor Jan Brewer (R-AZ) signed the Medicaid waiver request that could put medical care out of the reach of 300,000 people. Why that is news to anyone is surprising to me. Sure, the actual signing of the waiver is a little newsy, since Arizona rushed to make headlines by being the first state in the union to ask for it. But we already knew Gov. Jan Brewer cares nothing about the poor people she has been elected to govern. There is nothing new in that.

The real news happened November 28th, 2010, when 37-year-old Mark Price died because the state of Arizona refused to pay for his bone marrow transplant. At the last minute, a private citizen offered to pay the $250K for the operation, but it was too little too late. The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCS), basically a committee, had refused to pay for the bone marrow swap a month earlier, citing budget cuts.

Price reportedly begged Gov. Brewer for the funds to do the transplant and save his life. There is no she even so much as batted an eyebrow with her resounding no. Price would not be the first to die under the new Arizona austerity rules. Another patient died in June of 2010 because he too was not able to get a transplant.

Since the Arizona governor is unwilling to fund life-saving health care, why should we be surprised when Gov. Brewer boots hundreds of thousands of poor people out of the medical system for runny noses and the flu? In fact, after seeing how cold-blooded the Arizona ruling class is, expecting these elected officials to take a positive step towards social issues like health care or immigration reform is like whistling Dixie!

Meanwhile, during the lame duck session, U.S. Senate Republicans signed a “no vote pact,” refusing to vote on nearly all laws including the START Nuclear Missile Treaty until the Democrats caved in and gave the Republicans a massive unfunded tax cut. Perhaps the crowd in Paradise Valley with their million-dollar homes will spend their $139,000 tax cut wisely. The U.S. Congress handed every single person who nets a million dollars in income that much! Heck, it would only have taken the generosity of two millionaires to save Mark Price's life!

In the old days, legislators were expected to consider the needs of all people who lived in their jurisdictions. A new conservative class is making sure it takes care of the people who count. To them, money counts, campaign contributions count, influence counts. If you don’t qualify as one of the super-rich then you had better have fantastic insurance, because poor people don’t count.

Here is the real news. Gov. Brewer and her pals are playing for keeps. They will let poor people die without transplants instead of reallocating the money they are squandering defending SB 1070, the most vicious anti-immigrant law in history, which is costing millions to defend. Chasing starving Mexicans through the desert and getting big headlines for lawmakers count more than the desperately poor citizens of the state of Arizona.
