Last year Fiona and I noticed some damp in our bedroom and the office. We wanted to get rid of it and were recommended to Homefixers. Homefixers came through, spent a good amount of time looking at the walls, told us they could solve it and quoted us. It wasn’t cheap, but we wanted our cottage to be perfect.

Homefixers came through and did the work. Upon inspecting the work, we felt that it was done incorrectly and scheduled to have them come back to check. They ADMITTED that the windows were not sealed correctly and that the worker had INCORRECTLY applied the sealant (or whatever it was) after some other sealant – ie. did things backwards. They stripped the walls down again and redid the work, assuring us it was now perfect. It wasn’t long afterwards that we had to have them back again as the paint started to peel. They returned, and appeared to fix things up.

Now, a few months later, just as winter is coming the walls are getting damp again and the paint is peeling. Fiona called them up earlier this week and they said they’d get back to her, it’s now 72 (I believe) hours later and no word.

Really not impressed with their service, we won’t be using them again nor will we recommend them to anything. We are also going to seek assistance is having them come and fix the mess and possibly pay for damages/troubles.

If you’re looking for a new series to watch, how about James May’s Toy Stories? Yes, that’s James May of Top Gear fame. In this 6-part series he uses old-school toys as the inspiration to create something amazing: a full scale Lego house built in a vineyard, a plasticine garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, and a lifesize model of an Airfix Spitfire, for starters.

Here’s an overview from the DVD.

Never one to turn down a challenge, James takes on some madcap toy adventures in a bid to get children out of their bedrooms and away from their playstations. In six toy-tastic episodes that feature extraordinary feats of engineering, James takes time out with some of Britain’s best loved toys – putting generations of families at the heart of some ludicrously ambitions undertakings and reminding us all of the precious joys of creativity and quality family entertainment. Taking on the biggest toy challenges of all time, James attempts to build the world’s first full-size house made of Lego, the world’s first Plasticine garden, the world’s biggest ever model plane, the world’s greatest model train set, a world record beating Scalextric track, and a life-size bridge made out of Meccano; did you expect anything less from our renowned caravan stunt man?

To grasp the scale of awesomeness, check out the trailer:

After escaping from the last planet in the previous episode of Canoniac Launcher, your robot has now had to make another crash landing. The object of Canoniac Launcher 2 is to launch the robot as far as you can with the cannon to get back to your space ship.

At first you won’t get very far, but as you collect more points you can save up for all kinds of useful upgrades to help you fly a little further. There are better cannons to buy and upgrade with your points, of course, but also some helpers and vehicles.

In addition to those items, you can also save up points to get some useful weapons which you can hit your robot with as it flies. These will help your robot gain more speed and height. There are all kinds of creative items you can use: alien traction beams, spring-shaped creatures, magnetic orbs to help collect cash, you can even skydive on the back of a flying robot that is on fire, and much more besides!

How far can you launch your robot? Play Canoniac Launcher 2 and many more entertaining online games starring robots at Games.co.za!

A few weeks ago I was sent two copies of ESET Smart Security 6, one for Windows and one for Mac. We installed the anti-virus software on two machines at the office and have been using it since without problems. Somewhere along the line, anti-virus software got a bad name, which resulted in people being worried about things crashing, systems going slower and/or problems with Internet. This has not been the case with ESET Smart Security 6, I wanted to clear that up.

One thing that I felt I would tell you about is a new social feature that is included in the software – a social media scanner. The name says it all, this new feature scans your social profile and notifies you of malicious links and potentially harmful content. Furthermore, it checks your wall, newsfeed and private messages (even when you’re not logged in) and goes a step further and protects your Facebook friends. Quite an awesome feature considering just how risky Facebook is these days with all the profile hi-jacking, applications and such.

There are 7 core features that I’d like to mention:

Anti-theft – Stay safer by tracking and locating your missing laptop.

Keep your private data safe from identity theft.

Stay a safe distance from Internet Threats.

Enjoy the full power of your computer.

Keep kids safer on the Internet.

Install and forget or tweak away.

Stay safe on social networks.

These 7 features will ensure that your time spent online is safe and secure. I started using a Mac a few years ago and have never had a virus or the likes so I was quick to assume that I didn’t need anti-virus software, BUT, with social networks and phising schemes, I quickly realised that I was wrong and that I should be using some software to protect myself and this is where ESET Smart Security came in and I’m happy to be using it.

WANT A LICENSE?

Leave a comment below telling me which of the 6 features above is most important to you and why?

I have 5 licenses to give away!

“We’ve totally reengineered our platform, and we’re excited to release it to our customers”, says Alan Kirton, CTO of Web Africa. “It’s been 6 months since we openly paused our initial VPS offering, when we had some infrastructure and reliability issues. Having completely re-engineered several elements of the product, our test customers have been impressed with the service for several months”

Built using Microsoft’s Hyper-V, with infrastructure housed in Teraco, SA’s leading independent data centre, Web Africa is confident it has a winning product.

“We’ve sourced and put together a generous offering to provide commercial-grade hosting at affordable prices.” continues Alan.

Starting at just R99 for a Starter VPS package, with no contractual commitments, it’s priced very competitively alongside the handful of other local VPS providers.

Add-ons available now include various Linux and Windows OSs, SQL installations, SSL certificates, and static IPs.

Over the next few months, Web Africa plans to add easily deployable stacks to its VPS offering, which allow customers to select predefined installations such as cPanel or a LAMP stack.

Local entrepreneur, Iaan van Niekerk, published a thought-provoking post on his blog this past Monday. It’s called “The end is near and a Goldilocks list”.

In the post, Iaan describes his realisation that 2013 is half-gone and his feeling that he hasn’t yet accomplished anything significant for the year, as well as sharing his plan to remedy the situation.

Isn’t that so often true for all of us?

How many of your 2013 goals have you achieved?

Have you begun?

Are you on track?

It’s a fascinating and inspiring read, and one that’s a well-timed wake up call for those of us mired in the midst of winter doldrums.

What do you still plan to do in 2013?

Update: Shortly after posting this, I received a call from Incredible Connection and am very grateful for the call. The matter has been fixed and the screen will be available tomorrow at 13h00. The gentleman I spoke to was very gracious, admitted to the fault and was 10/10 apologetic.

I’ve experienced some shocking service from the Incredible Connection at the VnA Waterfront and I want to share my experience. If anything, perhaps it’ll make you think twice before purchasing hardware from them, I know I certainly will.

I decided to put this in bullet point format as it will be easier to consume:

29.04.2013 – Purchase a R2999.99 24″ LED Monitor from Incredible Connection

20.05.2013 – Monitor stops working. 21 days later. Policy states refund 14 days after purchase & box in good state.

20.05.2013 – Incredible Connection won’t refund, monitor has to be shipped off.

30.05.2013 – Monitor fixed, I go and fetch it.

31.05.2013 – Monitor tested my side, problem with resolution

31.05.2013 – Return monitor to Incredible Connection, they test, it’s broken.

31.05.2013 – Incredible Connection won’t refund, monitor has to be shipped off again.

05.06.2013 – Still no word from Incredible Connection

If that isn’t shocking enough, how’s this:

We were kept waiting for 45 minutes whilst a tech guy (regional manager apparently) messed about phoning different people.

The tech guy was not interested in us at all and honestly, didn’t look like he gave a damn.

I was told that the problem was the computer, not the monitor. He argued me on this point, then tested and admitted that it was the monitor (this was the resolution problem).

And to top this all off:

When I finally went to the entire store manager, he said, “Why on earth didn’t they give you a new monitor?” and followed that by saying, “This is really bad, I have monitors at other branches and I’ll get you one immediately” – This was last Friday, it’s now Wednesday and we’ve heard nothing.

–

Weeks are flying past and we’re without a monitor in the office that is used for an important task. Add up the parking costs, petrol and my time and suddenly I caught have literally bought a new monitor altogether.

Never have I experienced such terrible customer service in my life.

I’m disgusted. You’ve been warned.
