It turns out duplicated content sometimes gets better SE positions than the original. Found out it today. I really wasn’t so sure about it.

After posting on joining new CPA network – Commission Empire, I started to get some SE traffic for “commission empire” keyword. Which was nice, right? And then suddenly it disappeared. Today I’ve found out why.

It’s obvious: Google bot found and indexed the following page here. Which is called “C-o-m-m-i-s-s-i-o-n E-m-p-i-r-e – New CPA Network” and posted on Black Hat World SEO forum.

My blog post was at the 2nd place in Google search query for “commission empire” keyword before that post. Now my review article is not even listed in Google SERP for “commission empire”. That Black Hat forum post is a simple copy/paste of my blogpost. You can clearly see it with the dates: original posted on “May 5th, 2009″ and copy posted on “05-07-2009″ (May 7th).

On the other side Google have enough money to give you FREE online keywords services (so you can bring more money to Google )

I usually use 5 Google services to research keywords for my AdWords campaigns.

Here you go – my top 5 free Google keyword research tools:

1. AdWords Keyword Tool –  here what it does: “Use the Keyword Tool to get new keyword ideas. Select an option below to enter a few descriptive words or phrases, or type in your website’s URL”. You get 2 options to find new keywords for your SEM (Search Engine Marketing) campaigns: finding keywords based on descriptive words or phrases and find new keywords based on your website content.

In the first case Google would scan their statistics and show what words or phrases people type inside Google search when they’re looking for particular subject.

In the second case, Google will scan you website or webpage (you can include other pages on your website linked to the URL you enter).

Adwords Keyword Tool is the first tool I use in the most of the cases when I do keyword research.

2. Google Search-based Keyword Tool. Basically it’s very similar Adwords Keyword Tool second option, but I also have found that their data differs slightly. Here’s what it does according to Google:

“..provides keyword ideas:
- Based on actual Google search queries
- Matched to specific pages of your website with your ad and search share
- New to your Adwords account (typically excluding keywords matching those already in your account)”

Frankly speaking I find it little less handy to use comparing to Adwords Keyword Tool, but I like to compare provided keyword ideas (I just love collecting keywords ).

3. Google Insights for Search. Want to know how does it help you find the best performing keywords?

Well, after you have succesfully search through Adwords keyword tool or Search-based keyword tool and found some hot keywords, it’s important to know popular is your chosen keyword and if it’s still hot in the country you’re going to promote it.

For example, let’s take “free ringtones” keyword. Many CPA networks have these kind of offers in their portfolio. But what we’ll see when we do some research for this keyword on Google Insights for Search? Here’s a link to “free ringtones” keyword data inside Google Insights for Search.

You’ll notice the interest trend of the keyword – it’s going down. And that “free ringtones” is not so popular in USA – it’s more popular in Trinidad & Tobago What you can do to get the information for successful geo-targeting your AdWords campaign is click the country name you’re going to promote and then target the regions where the chosen keyword is mostly searched for. In case with “free ringtones” in USA you’d have to target Mississippi, West Virginia, Arkansas, etc.

But on the other hand we also see some very valuable information – Search terms related to “free ringtones” (right at the bottom of the page) with keywords organised according to 2 criterias: Top searches and Rising searches.

This kind of information is very valuable – you can use those top keywords and then go AdWords Keyword tool to find more related keywords. With some long tail (buying) keywords in mind.

4. Google Trends. This is the tool that gives ideas when you gather information about today’s hottest topics (although you can also use your Twitter account and see info on what are the most “tweeted” topics right now (right beneath the search)). This is the type of info you want to use to find hot niches and related keywords.

You can also use to find out what time of the year is best to launch your campaign.

For example, let us again play around with “free ringtones”.  As you can see the trend is also descending (almost the same picture as we’ve seen on Google Insights for Search), but Trends picture also shows when the keyword becomes popular and attracts higher number of visitor searches during the year.

It’s obvious that “free ringtones” gets more attention during Christmas & New Year’s Eve. This the time you want to start promoting your “free ringtones” offers.

5. Google. Yes, good old Google search page. Now it offers you advices for searches. It’s a simple and very valuable source to find keywords with high traffic. The reason I still use is that sometimes Google and AdWords Keyword Tool results differ. I guess Keyword Tool is just more specific and gives more “long tail results” over the whole search network, while Google search gives more specific results for your region.

Here’s the example, let’s go to google.co.uk (Google United Kingdom) and search for our favorite “free ringtones”. Type in “free ringtones” and see what Google offers (don’t push “Enter” yet):

And then let’s go to google.ca (Google Canada) and see what Canadians search for along with “free ringtones”:

It’s obvious both results are different, yet their both offer you another useful keyword information. I hope you get the idea how simple plain Google search can give some valuable keyword information.

That brings us to the click tracking. In CPA marketing statistic data is essential – it’s like a walking with eyes wide open: if you don’t use statistics (and better some 3rd party statistics data tracking) – you’re walking by-touch. If you don’t see where are your clicks are coming from – you don’t know which campaigns to stop and which ones to widen up.

In CPA marketing it’s also essential to assign different IDs to promoting campaigns. The reason for that is the fact that most of the campaigns can be promoted via different traffic sources: PPC, SEO, video marketing, social networks, etc.

So in order to assign for each traffic streams unique ID you need SUBID. I know that in the beginning it all seems bit difficult, but you’ll soon find out that assigning and using SUBIDs to track down incoming traffic is very easy and useful as well.
