Busy Busy Busy !

So it has been quite a while since my last blog post, however it is all in good reason! I have spent this summer working hard at making every women's special day the best! I have altered countless bridal, bridesmaid, mother of the bride, flowergirl and guests gowns and outfits and have constructed many outfits with the happy outcome of smiling clients! The shop is expanding and we are doing increasingly well and we also have a lot of exciting events coming up!

Here is a select few which I have constructed!!

Off course there is always much more to come!! Also with just about to start my final year of uni many updates on my final collection to come!!

Surrealism in Fashion has been a continuous development since the 1920's. With Elsa Schiaparelli being one of the first to combine these two concepts together, she was able to make her stamp in fashion and have many followers, who would alter and adapt her take on surrealist fashion. I am extremely fascinated with what can be achieved and how the boundaries of fashion can be adapted. One designer who has taken full advantage of this is Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. Her work is avant garde brilliance! A clear use of surrealism inspiration and pure garment construction quality makes this collection an amazing success!

So it has been over a month since my last blog post. However there was no neglecting going on just plain busy! Over the past month I have made 6 garments and I am in the middle of making 4 more ! So rather busy but extremely productive! Here is what I have made!

Crazy Scottish Designer!

Louise Gray is an emerging fashion designer from Fraserburgh, Scotland. Her collections hold a great sense of Imperfectlyperfect Fashion with clashes of eccentric mess throughout. Louise studied textile design at The Glasgow School of Art and Central Saint Martins. She has had design collaborations with Cotton USA, Judy Blame, Nicholas Kirkwood, the Smiley Company and Crown Paint. With having a sponsorship from the Centre for Fashion Enterprise, it is clear to see that Louise Gray is having much success. Louise was also sponsored by NEWGEN at London Fashion Week and will be selling her stock at the V&A shop this Autumn.

Here is her Spring/Summer 2012 Collection. She states in an interview with NEWGEN, that inspiration from the collection came from, "Freedom, technology, mirages and sunny days."

Louise brands her signatures as,

“Colour, textures, hand silk screened, specially developed fabrics in woven, embroidered and printed techniques.”

She describes her typical client as, “Ultimately someone who is fun.”

A consistent use of textile methods showcases Louise's eccentric and personal style wonderfully!

Love this outfit! Works really well together and has a huge inspiration of the 80's!

Miu Miu Love!

Without a doubt my favourite collection of S/S 12!

Miu Miu have never really caught my eye until now, and I have fallen for it all. The simplistic and understated style lines, with cuteness and quirk driven through with a passion. The patterns with such deep and jewel colouring all seem to bewilder me. The use of textiles and contrasting textures add a hidden depth that balances out fantastic!

I will be keeping a close eye on Miu Miu from now on I think!

Fantastic back colour for photo shoot. Adds fun, excitement and quirkiness to the campaign!

A clear sense of Japanese influence with a mix of decades from the 40's to the 70's!

On The Catwalk Spring/Summer 2012 Miu Miu Collection

Lace is a huge component this season with many designers jumping for it! However I have not seen much that is not coated in pastel tones.

Love the edge to Miu Miu's dark hues with lace!

Tribal also made a welcoming comeback to the catwalk. Miu Miu has touched on this slightly, which pleases me as I am not a fan of tribal wear! (Too Much Print)

Beautiful mini capes were seen a many at Miu Miu's S/S12 Show. The look is elegant and cute and looks adorable with this shift dress!

Minimalist Tailoring had a great reaction throughout the designers and this outfit is a must for achieving that eccentric professional!

Beautiful shimmer in this silk minimalist coat.

Absolutely love it and I am considering making a coat of a similar style!

Patchwork Printing Mix Up! Again Miu Miu has embraced a signature piece throughout of the ribbon tie on the neckline. Simplicity which works fantastic!

Work Uniform !

Recently I had to design and construct my own uniform! Things like this is why I love my job! We decided on purple for the colour and 50's as the theme, as we love flattery of a full skirt with a clinched in waist.

50's Style Wool Dress. With a high neckline, clinched waist and full skirt to hide the hips and thighs, this dress is perfectly flattering!

A Ribbon Strap back to create a bow, adds something different to the classic style and looks great when balanced with the front neckline.

50's Style Panelled Wool Dress with a cut out neckline and 1 piece cap sleeves. I used the same pattern for the skirt as the first dress, however decided a mix up to show the clients my technical skills was needed for the bodice. We have had a lot of fantastic feedback and interest with this dress!

The Back of The dress is the same idea as the front, however I mixed up the style lines. When worn the flattery of the panelling to seam you in and the clinching waist and skirt is all achieved.

At my work we will be making our own uniform's every season now and I am already thinking up designs for S/S12 !! Exciting!

Follow up of Callanish Project

A few posts earlier, I blogged about my Callanish University Project, displaying the garment construction process and the final outcome. Well, we had our photoshoot and here is the finale!

Alice Luker is a London Fashion Photographer. Her focus is in editorial and commercial photography for publications and a privileged clientele. Alice's work has been showcased in various magazines, with some been these:

Alice was very kind to take time out of her busy schedule and answer a few questions for me:

Who is your inspiration?

I am mainly inspired by art and history. My aim is to create imagery with a sense of meaning and depth, incorporating elements relevant to the concept. I believe that there is so much more beauty in an image which references both past and present.

Perfection is a huge quality to your work, have you ever had a piece of work which you created not to your perfection, but had amazing feedback from it?

If I wasn't happy with how one of my shoots turned out I would try my upmost to reshoot. I think the key to a successful shoot is to really understand your concept, plan each aspect with as much precision as possible and work alongside a talented team of creatives. I have quite a ruthless approach at times; a characteristic which can work to both my advantage and disadvantage. I strongly believe that in any creative profession you need to be brutally honest with yourself and your work in order to form a reputable position and survive in such a competitive industry.

What has been your biggest achievement in your career to date?

In October 2011 I won 'Public Choice' at the AOP (association of photographers) Open Awards. Being shortlisted as a finalist was an achievement in itself; although winning was fantastic. There have been occasions which have made me confident that I stand a chance of accomplishing my dreams and ambitions- this was certainly one of them.

Alice Luker is definitely a photographer to look out for. Her career has already been a success, however I am sure there will be much more excitement and success to come!

Time for Uniqlets!

Uniqlets is another amazing find from my general pondering of the WWW! These timeless jewellery pieces have bewildered me. The intricate detailing of these pieces are fantastic and are a great attachment to any outfit. The designer Lisa Rosenberg and in a her bio she states:

My take on jewelry is simple: elegant, whimsical or colorful, I want the jewelry I wear and create to make a “statement”. The pieces I create are never shy or retiring, and each one is unique. If my jewelry shares a theme, it is nostalgia with an edge. The components I use are vintage dating from the Victorian era through the 1960s. Bakelite, glass, rhinestone, metal or wood -
button, buckle, game piece, or vintage jewelry – if it strikes my fancy it may show up in one of my bracelets or necklaces. The variety allows a woman to find a piece that reflects her personal style.

Her work is truly inspiring. I feel it is hard to come across jewellery of this detailing. Something of which is a piece to keep and hand down!

COLLECTION MARKET

'Vintage addict and peerless researcher in second hand market, I created the website "PRIOR K Vintage" to transform the vintage treasures and second-hand clothes in fashion outfits sold at low prices.
A collection of sixty pieces are offered monthly and bi-weekly this is "Retour de marché": a lesson in recycling proposed in line with submission of a before / after transformation of a successful vintage.'

When pondering around the internet, I came across a fantastic website that I had to share! This is the brilliant vintage re-work of Prior K.

Prior K is a company that inspires from the latest trends, colours and patterns. Karine (owner) , has a good old ramage through the latest fashion magazines and re-works vintage and recycled clothing. Karine states that ;
' I like to create, assemble clothing, new or old, combine colours to give a unique and personal style.'

Karine of Prior K definitely achieves this with her collection market and collection Hiver #3. These collections have a great sense of quirkiness and re-worked uniqueness! I love the use of layering assembles and once the pocket is full I will be loading up the cart!

Gogh Rodarte !

Spring/Summer 2012 displayed a bewildering collection from the Mulleavy Sisters of Rodarte. Driving their collection was the inspiration of two beautiful concepts, the 1959 animated Disney, Sleeping Beauty and the fantastic art work of Van Gogh. The sisters became overwhelmed by the greens and purples of Sleeping Beauty and the blues and yellows in the post-impressionist artist. The digital printings of Van Gogh’s paintings are some what mesmerising to the eye.

Rodarte have displayed the fantastic relationship between art and fashion, something of which I will be taking full advantage off!

Divergent Thinking

A fantastic project where I learnt alot! My class and I were tasked with constructing a floor length dress without the use of a sewing machine or designs. At first it was rather daunting. We were given 3 different fabrics and a mannequin.... GO!
I began just playing with the fabric to get a feel of it and see how it draped and shaped around and off the mannequin. As there was no sewing machine aloud, I decided to take a trip to B&Q (looking rather out of place) and collect some hinges, chains, safety pins and other bits and bobs. We were able to use hand sewing methods, which I did to secure the hinges and chains into place.
Once I got my basic foundation, it seemed the dress was missing depth. I then knitted a centre front panel to accent the dress, which looked perfect with the dress!
Finally to create more shape I added a chain entwined belt. I also applied a method used in bridal gowns, where you stitch a ribbon tie and a ribbon loop underneath the dress in certain sections. I then tied them together to create a lift throughout the dress and give a more interesting look!

It was a fantastic learning curve and I would advise anyone with a mannequin and some fabric lying around, give it a go and you will be amazed in what you come up with!

Callanish Project

In September 2011 my class and I were commissioned to work with Malcolm Campbell; entrepreneur in the textile creative industry. We were given a new innovative and complex fabric, The Callanish Tartan. Based upon the Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis, the tartan reminisces the colour scheme of the landmark and Scottish and Isles heritage. The tartan has been shower proofed to the highest of standards without diminishing any quality to the fabric.
My class (Fashion Design) and I were to design and construct an outfit made from the tartan and/or any complimenting fabrics. Inspiration came from the tartan, the Callanish Stones and the Victorian Era.

The outcome above is my outfit. I constructed a structured playsuit, inspired from the corsetry and structure of the Victorian Era. I wanted to continue with the phrase applied in the brief, Stepping Back .... Looking Forward! I have achieved this with the playsuit.
I also constructed a caged crinoline covered in the Callanish tartan to be applied over the playsuit. Finally I constructed an oversized fur neck piece, to be worn with the rest of the outfit!

There is more to this project to come and I am very excited so I will keep you's updated!!

Music is one of the greatest forms of art expression. I may be a devoted fashion student, however my passion for music has always came first. If I am listening, observing, playing or singing, I can’t get enough of the beat. It is a very powerful aspect of your life, even if you don’t know it.

Music can inspire, relax, alter your mood, lighten your day and can get you all nostalgic all at once.

There have been countless inspiring artists and musical genius’. The most obvious being, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Beethoven, Lady Gaga, Madonna and so on.

One recent musical phenomenon is Florence and the Machine. Florence has the voice, the understanding of musical arrangement and the unmistakable great sense of unique and quirky fashion. Here is the sensational voice in my favourite song of Florence’s, Girl with one eye.
