Course Objective

This course is developed to enable the clinician to acquire the knowledge and confidence to perform bone grafting procedures in the maxilla & mandible. The program will cover surgical anatomy, pre/post surgical considerations, key steps to performing successful bone grafting procedures, socket/ridge preservation, ridge augmentation using allograft, monocortical autogenous block grafts, radiographic sinus interpretation, sinus lifts, platelet rich plasma and pathways for infection. Clinicians will have the unique opportunity to use the Piezotome in the cadaver lab, which can be used for Implant Surgery, Sinus Lift, Bone Grafting, and Atraumatic Extraction.

By having a thorough understanding of these bone grafting procedures the clinician should be able to improve the success of their implant and non implant supported cases, as well as increasing esthetic results for patients.

After the course the clinician will have a comprehensive manual and a model to take back to their office and reference at any time.

About the Speakers

Lee Silverstein, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD is an Associate Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the topics of periodontics, dental implantology, bone grafting and suturing. Having had over 100 journal articles and 8 textbook chapters published, he has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Silverstein is privileged to be on the Editorial Board of Practical Periodontics and Aesthetic Dentistry, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, Functional Esthetics and Restorative Dentistry, Collaborative Dental Techniques, and Academy of General Dentistry Scientific Magazine. Additionally, he has been granted Fellowships in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Silverstein is the author of the highly acclaimed textbook entitled “Principles of Dental Suturing: A Complete Guide to Surgical Closure.” and has just completed his new book entitled “Principles of Soft Tissue Surgery: A Complete Step-by-Step Procedural Guide” available in 2007. Peter Shatz, DDS is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of periodontics and dental implantology. He has had numerous journal articles and textbook chapters published, and has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Shatz is the past President of the Atlanta Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and is the editor for the Northwestern District Dental Society. He is also a consultant to the Georgia Board of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to periodontal care and dental implants in Atlanta, Georgia at Kennestone Periodontics, P.C. Raymond van Gennip, DDS, MSD was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where he received his first dental degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1984. He attained his second Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and his Masters in Periodontics in 1997, both from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and is also a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the European Federation of Periodontists and the Dutch Society of Periodontists. OBJECTIVES

There is no tuition charge for qualified immediate family of Salvin Customers, however students will be responsible for their own travel to Charlotte and hotel accommodations. We have secured a special rate of $125.00 per night and students will be housed double occupancy. This rate includes breakfast and internet service. AGENDA

The program will begin on Tuesday night with an informal welcome reception at Bob Salvin’s home. We will provide lunch each day as well as a group dinner on Thursday night. Dress code during the day will be “dress for success” which means shirt and tie for the men (bring a jacket for our interview exercises) and nice business dress for the women.

Each participant will have the opportunity for “before and after” videotaping as part of the individual coaching process. In addition, we will do a business head shot photograph for each student to take with them. All local transportation will be provided including airport pick up. The hotel is located in a complex with several restaurants and a movie theater.

Course Intent

This course is designed to give clinicians the confidence to perform soft tissue grafts, appropriate flap design for full and partial thickness flaps, suturing and advanced bone grafting procedures upon returning to their offices. Our structure is a combination of indepth lecture, over the shoulder demonstration and a hands-on workshop with models and fresh frozen cadaver heads on advanced bone grafting for implant placement. One of the unique features of our course is that we provide EasyGuide™ interpretation of every cadaver head to simulate a realistic learning experience. This is the closest thing to performing live surgery!

Each participant will receive a comprehensive manual which compiles PowerPoint slides from the lecture. This makes following the lecture more enjoyable than having to take detailed notes, and provides an excellent reference back in the office after the course. Each participant will also receive a personalized monogrammed scrub which can be worn in the lab, as well as a soft sided attaché.

Course Objectives

After completing this course the clinician should be able to treatment plan dental implants based on prosthetic classifications, divisions of available bone and classifications of bone density. The surgeon will be able to provide appropriate manipulation and grafting of the soft tissues, and have exposure to the practical use of cone beam software (EasyGuide™). Finally, the implant surgeon will have a more thorough understanding of advanced bone grafting procedures which will ultimately improve implant success, longevity and esthetics for their patients.

Laboratory:

Hands-on computer exercise utilizing cone beam CT scans of the cadaver specimen on which you will be performing bone grafts.

Each participant will evaluate the CT scan using the EasyGuide™ software. Each participant should be able to evaluate the sinus for: height/width, septa, sinus floor, determine the best place for the sinus window and determine if the osteomeatal complex is patent. In addition, with regard to bone, each participant should be able to assess bone height/width, density, and perform virtual implant placement. Tracing of the inferior alveolar canal will also be evaluated.

About the Speakers

Course Director: Dr. John Russo

is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He completed his periodontal training and earned a Master in Health Sciences degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Russo is a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is in private practice in Sarasota, FL and is a clinical assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Division of Periodontics. He is an author and an international lecturer on bone grafting and dental implant surgery.

Course Co-Director: Dr. Bob Gellin

joined the Medical University of South Carolina faculty in 1985. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Stomatology, Director of the Division of Periodontics and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He maintains an active practice limited to Periodontics within the College’s Dental Faculty Practice. Dr. Gellin is also the administrator of the College of Dental Medicine’s clinic management software.

	The Advanced Bone Grafting I course is designed for the clinician with prior implant experience who desires to implement millennium technology and state of the art bone grafting protocols for their implant practice. The focus will be the application of the Pikos Institute Philosophy to optimize hard tissue architecture for predictable surgical implant placement and restoration.
