Course Intent

This course is designed to give clinicians the confidence to perform soft tissue grafts, appropriate flap design for full and partial thickness flaps, suturing and advanced bone grafting procedures upon returning to their offices. Our structure is a combination of in-depth lecture, over the shoulder demonstration and a hands-on workshop with models and fresh frozen cadaver heads on advanced bone grafting for implant placement. One of the unique features of our course is that we provide cone beam CT scans and Virtual Implant Placement software interpretation of every cadaver head to simulate a realistic learning experience. This is the closest thing to performing live surgery!

Each participant will receive a comprehensive manual which compiles PowerPoint slides from the lecture. This makes following the lecture more enjoyable than having to take detailed notes, and provides an excellent reference back in the office after the course. Each participant will also receive a personalized monogrammed scrub which can be worn in the lab, as well as a soft sided attaché.

Course Objectives

After completing this course the clinician should be able to treatment plan dental implants based on prosthetic classifications, divisions of available bone and classifications of bone density. The surgeon will be able to provide appropriate manipulation and grafting of the soft tissues, and have exposure to the practical use of cone beam software (Virtual Implant Placement). Finally, the implant surgeon will have a more thorough understanding of advanced bone grafting procedures which will ultimately improve implant success, longevity and esthetics for their patients..

About the Speakers

Course Director: Dr. John Russo

is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He completed his periodontal training and earned a Master in Health Sciences degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Russo is a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is in private practice in Sarasota, FL and is a clinical assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Division of Periodontics. He is an author and an international lecturer on bone grafting and dental implant surgery.

Course Co-Director: Dr. Bob Gellin

joined the Medical University of South Carolina faculty in 1985. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Stomatology, Director of the Division of Periodontics and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He maintains an active practice limited to Periodontics within the College’s Dental Faculty Practice. Dr. Gellin is also the administrator of the College of Dental Medicine’s clinic management software.

This lecture is designed to help dentists in dealing with common implant complications, in particular to avoid these complications before they occur. It will provide the basics of treatment planning concepts and the mechanism of bone loss and implant failure; and howt to deal and prevent these problems. The treatment for implant diseases/complications include: chemotherapeutic agents, apically positioned flap with or without implantoplasty, implant surface detoxification, guided bone regeneration, soft tissue grafts, implant removal as well as re-implantation. In addition, participants will also learn how to perform implant maintenance care. This presentation will also focus on discussing many key factors that are essential for avoiding implant esthetic nightmares. Procedures used to correct or enhance esthetic outcomes such as socket augmentation, orthodontic forced eruption, guided bone augmentation, monocortical onlay grafts, soft tissue grafts and pink porcelain or veneer will also be briefly presented.

Recession Grafting Surgery

Most graft surgery for recession treatment can now be done without palate surgery to harvest free gingival or connective tissue grafts.

Acellular dermis can be used in a simplified technique without tunneling.

New placental membranes bring more options to treating recession defects due to lost attachment. They are easily placed, do not require suturing, and heal without infection or inflammation.

Course Objectives for Participants:

Recognize the prevalence of recession defects in general practice.
Review anatomy and blood supply of gingival soft tissues.
Understand where to use specific perioplastic graft techniques to treat recession sites gaining reattachment and root coverage.
Observe new soft tissue surgery techniques with video.
Understand the value and use of biological growth factors to enhance soft tissue surgery.
Enable participants to treat multiple recession sites in different quadrants in a single surgical visit.

Dr. Wallace received his B.S. in pharmacology and completed his DDS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was a faculty member at U.N.C., and received his Masters Degree with Honors in Periodontics from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Wallace is an active member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American Academy of Periodontology. He has published original research in Implant Dentistry and the Journal of Advanced Clinical Dentistry on bone and soft tissue grafting, and lectures at teaching institutions and national professional meetings.
