Rubber market closes mixed

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian rubber market closed mixed yesterday on cautious sentiment despite the commodity's bullish performance on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (Tocom).
A dealer said Tocom rubber futures rose on weaker yen but local investor sentiment was offset by stronger ringgit.
At noon, the Malaysian Rubber Board's official physical price for tyre-grade SMR 20 rose half sen to 501 sen a kg, and latex-in-bulk decreased two sen to 386.5 sen a kg.
The unofficial closing price for tyre-grade SMR 20 gained 2.0 sen to 502.5 sen a kg, while latex-in-bulk fell one sen to 386.00 sen a kg.

North Korea and Its affect on Oil Price Relationship With the Iran

Deja vu. The more things change, the more they remain the same, don't they? Take North Korea, for instance. If the ascension of Kim Jong-un promised change, it -alas- wasn't meant to be. A liberal education in the West or the luxury of a younger age or passion for modern gadgets couldn't nudge Kim Jr. to lead his country to modernity. Forget pragmatic small steps to prosperity, if anything, the new Kim turned out to be more belligerent than his father.

So, when relentless Kim Jong-un makes news with announcements of nuclear tests/missile tests do you run to check the oil prices? Well, many do. There is a widespread assumption that tension in the Korean peninsula makes the oil prices tipsy. After all, markets, as well all know, are crazy. Any news of any tension in any part of the world is enough for the speculators to push up the price of oil. The poor consumer.
For good reasons, we know the effects of Iran's rhetoric on oil price, the repercussions caused every time Iran saunters into the news, but does North Korea have what it takes to pull oil prices northward? Should you worry when war statements clog the Korean air? Simple answer: No. Next time you hear of war cries in the Korean peninsula, you don't have to be anxious over oil and its price. The reason is uncomplicated: North Korea isn't a major oil-producing country. There you go- myth busted. According to EIA, total oil production in North Korea in 2012 was 90 barrels per day. In contrast, Saudi Arabia produced almost 11.6 million bbl/d of total petroleum in 2012. Naturally, North Korea, as of today, can't influence oil prices the way Iran can.
Hard to believe? Check the facts. Oil prices have been on the long journey southward since February. Early this week, Brent crude went below the $100 mark, the first time in almost nine months. All this even as a recent report from the IMF stated improvements in the world economy. If North Korea was such an important player, oil prices would have gone through the roof.
To the question of nuclear weapons: An advanced nuclear program, and North Korea can cause serious damage. However, what the present Kim inherited from his father is the bogey of a nuclear state. Almost every month we get announcements of nuclear tests from North Korea. Underground nuclear test? Bah. What about the missiles? For the missiles to carry a nuclear warhead, they need nuclear weapons, don' they? Bah. Compared to Iran, North Korea's nuclear weapons are still in the kinder garden stage of development. Yes, it does tests missiles but those tests hardly cause a ripple. Then there's Iran, where any sneeze shakes markets around the world. Why? Plenty of reasons.
For a start, Iran has oil. Iran has the world's third largest reserves of oil, enough to last a century. Thanks to an oil field it shares with Iraq, production has increased by 5,000 barrels a day. According to latest figures, the country's current oil production stands at 4.2 million b/d.
Also, Iran has the Strait of Hormuz. Readers of oil-price.net would be aware of the huge importance this strait plays in the field of oil. Stated as the world's most important 'oil choke point' by the US Energy and Information Administration, Strait of Hormuz is a shipping route which connects Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman. So why is this so important? Almost 17 million barrels of oil pass through this strait every day. In other words, almost twenty percent of world's traded oil and thirty-five percent of all seaborne traded oil, making it a major choke point for maritime trade. As it is just 21 miles wide at the narrowest spot, Iran can block the strait disrupting the flow of oil. Even a day's block can disrupt oil supplies. For that matter, Iran uses the strait every time it wants the world's attention.
Back to Korea: North Korea is alone in its battle. Its only ally China is retreating from the scene. China is the single largest trading partner of North Korea helping the country with coal, oil, medicine and other essential commodities. Half of imported food in North Korea comes from China. In fact, North Korea imports almost eighty percent of oil from China. As part of an aid program, on a monthly basis China exports 50,000 to 300,000 tonnes of crude oil earning it more than $370 million. In 2012, China exported 523,041 tonnes. In spite of being such a close ally, last February, China did not export any oil to North Korea in the month of February. To put in some perspective, China didn't export crude to North Korea in 2012 either. This time though, China has voted in favor of more sanctions against North Korea in the UN Security council. As well.
Iran, on the other hand, isn't alone. North Korea is cut off from the rest of the world. Iran is smarter and knows how to play the trump card. One has to factor in the religious aspect too. Iran with its version of Islam can summon fighters true to its cause at any point of time. Further, Korea's educational system is no match to Iran's. Iran can still produce and send abroad large numbers of scientists, technocrats and economists, some of which teaching in the world's most best universities. North Korean people don't even have the luxury of mobile phones. Iran has money, oil, friends and a strong economy. North Korea takes to threats almost every other day. Iran does too but it backs it up with tangible points of attack.
The US knows that Iran can cause serious damage. But North Korea? The US doesn't even care for any more talks. The secretary of state John Kerry has stated that there would be no 'artificial talks' with North Korea. In a marked departure, China, has warned the country stating that "no one should be allowed to throw a region and even the whole world into chaos for selfish gains".
How much will China's change in attitude hurt North Korea? Too much. The already ailing economy would disintegrate should China stop its aid. Yet there's another side to the story. A nation named North Korea is in the interest of China too. Tension in North Korea helps it avoid attention to itself. Take off North Korea and China comes in direct line of US attack for its dismal human rights record. Hence, a nation named North Korea will survive for some more time.
While China distances itself from North Korea, Iran has been cozying up with the disctatorship and is currently in talks about exporting Iranian oil to North Korea, which the Asian power desperately needs. Although North Korea may be short on Dollars or Euros to pay for Iranian oil, it has other means to afford it as you have guessed: nuclear technology and materials

2016 BMW X5 M is big and bold, not beautiful

Awesome as it is, the BMW X5 M has never really been an attractive machine. Big and bulgy are the themes here, and that's only more pronounced with the X5's most recent refresh. But no matter, the X5 M has never been about looks – for this machine, it's all about performance, and BMW's hi-po crossover absolutely delivers in this regard.

Under the hood is the familiar 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8, though power has been boosted to 567 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque – healthy increases of 12 and 53, respectively, compared to the outgoing model. Hitting 60 miles per hour is said to take just four seconds, which is damn impressive considering this thing weighs well over 5,000 pounds.

But the X5 M has always been shockingly good to drive, with limits you'll never reach except in the most hardcore track scenarios (which we'd really like to see, by the way). It's not the prettiest thing ever, but that's okay. It's not exactly cheap, though, with prices starting at $99,650. Woof.Show full PR text

The new BMW X5 M and X6 ; the second generation of the BMW M GmbH Ultra High Performance Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupe.
The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M see BMW M GmbH setting the pace once again in the high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segment. When the previous generation of the two vehicles arrived in 2009, it was the first time the high-performance character distilled by BMW M GmbH had been transplanted into an all- wheel-drive BMW X model. The result was class-leading dynamics. The new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M pull no punches in writing the next chapter in this success story with another significant step forward in dynamic excellence, distinct M design and outstanding efficiency. The 2015 BMW X5 M will be offered at a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $99,650 and the 2015 BMW X6 M will start at $103,050, including $950 Destination and Handling.
The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M combine the characteristic features of the successful BMW X family – exclusivity, robustness, agility and everyday usability – with the commitment to high performance that defines an M vehicle. The latter is resoundingly highlighted by the vehicles' impressive performance figures. Both models complete the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds in conjunction with the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.
Innovative engine technology.
The new M TwinPower Turbo V8 for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is the most powerful engine ever developed by BMW for an all-wheel-drive vehicle. Boasting innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology with a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, VALVETRONIC and High Precision Direct Injection, the 4.4-liter V8 produces maximum output of 567 hp between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. That represents a 3 percent increase over the predecessor models. The step up is even clearer when it comes to the power development of the new engine. Peak torque has been boosted by 53 lb-ft which equates to a rise of 10 percent. Its 553 lb-ft can be enjoyed across a broad rev range between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm.
At the same time, fuel consumption of the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M in the European cycle (official EPA values will be available closer to the start of sales) has been cut by 20 percent, CO2 emissions are likewise down by more than 20 percent, to 258 g/km. The two models accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds through the standard eight- speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h
(155 mph).
Powerful looks and exclusive equipment.
With their striking use of forms, the looks of the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M foretell their performance potential. With their exteriors painted fully in body color, both models cut a low-slung figure on the road, while mixed tires showcase their sporty track width. Additional exterior design modifications, moreover, elevate the M models even further than before from the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6. Large air intakes at the front end, side gills with a model badge and Air Breathers, signature M exterior mirrors in twin-stalk style, a typically M four-tailpipe exhaust system and a rear spoiler (for the BMW X6 M) give them a standalone look M fans will immediately recognize. Setting the seal on this exclusive range of features are standard M-specific, forged 21-inch M light-alloy wheels.
The high-quality interior impresses with its well-thought-through combination of sporty features, exclusive materials and flawless workmanship. The M instrument cluster, M leather steering wheel with aluminum gearshift paddles and M gearshift lever – which works in the same way as the familiar M Double Clutch Transmission gearshift lever – are complemented by electrically operated M multi-function seats for the driver and front passenger, an M driver's footrest and the optional Head-Up Display which, in addition to the standard information, also includes an M-specific display with gear indicator, rev band and shift lights.
New BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M customers also have the choice between various options exclusive to the M models, such as Merino full-leather trim. And there's also a choice of two new and exclusive M paint finishes – Long Beach Blue Metallic and Donington Grey Metallic.
A finely balanced overall concept.
At BMW M GmbH, high performance is about more than engine output and top speeds alone. Here, high performance means all of a vehicle's components working in perfect harmony and the precise interplay of various details resulting in maximum performance, agility, precision, poise and assurance out on the road. This sense of balance is a defining feature of all the vehicles produced by BMW M GmbH and is, needless to say, also present in the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M.
Function-led design.
The function-led design of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M is immediately clear with athletic, muscular looks betraying their high-performance credentials before they so much as turn a wheel. The four large air intakes and flaps at the front end, and the diffuser at the rear, are fully functional, they are an essential part of the engineers' drive to optimize aerodynamics and ensure efficient cooling.
Thanks to a clever aerodynamics concept, the airflow is guided so efficiently around the vehicle that drag is minimized and lift is also reduced. The engine, powertrain and brakes are all kept sufficiently cool, even when placed under extreme loads on the track. Elements which look like pure design accents when they first catch the eye, in fact, fulfill functional tasks. For example, the M-specific Air Breathers behind the front wheels reduce turbulence in the front wheel arches.
Optimum temperature management.
The high-performance engine under the hood of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M requires a high-performance cooling system in order to guarantee the optimum operating temperature in all conditions – i.e. normal everyday driving, stop-start traffic and extreme action on the race track. A highly efficient, newly developed combination of low-temperature and high-temperature radiators, which also handles the cooling of the turbochargers, charge air and transmission oil, maintains an optimum temperature, even with all components working flat out.
New Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.
The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M send their engine power to the wheels via the newly developed eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, which closely follows the operating philosophy of the M Double Clutch Transmission used by other M models. With its instantaneous responses, rapid gear changes and direct reaction to load changes, the torque converter automatic transmission links up seamlessly with the new higher-torque turbocharged engine and showcases its talents. At the same time, its wider ratio spread allows it to offer a clear drop in fuel consumption over the six-speed transmission offered in the previous generation, as well as an increase in driving comfort and improved performance.
The new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission allows drivers to sit back and enjoy automatic shifts or change gear manually using the gearshift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. And for the perfect getaway, the driver can activate the Launch Control system adapted from use in racing vehicles. Here, the driver keeps their foot on the brakes and pushes the accelerator down almost to the floor, which prompts the system to dial in the ideal getaway rpm. Releasing the brakes prompts Launch Control to let the vehicle off the leash, and it accelerates off the line with maximum propulsion.
The driver can also use the three-stage Drivelogic function to choose whether to prioritize fuel economy, comfort or Sport performance. This functionality is available both in automatic and manual shifting modes.
Intelligent all-wheel drive.
BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and Dynamic Performance Control play a key role in the outstanding dynamics of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M. The xDrive system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to allow fully variable distribution of drive between the front and rear axles – from 100 percent at the rear to up to 100 percent at the front. This ensures the best possible traction in all road conditions. In the interests of greater agility, xDrive normally operates with a rear-biased torque split-in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.
Dynamic Performance Control oversees the continuous distribution of torque between the rear wheels – both under load and on the overrun – regardless of engine output. Working in combination with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the result is a whole new bracket of dynamic flair, agility and traction. The vehicle follows the course set by the driver far more accurately, whatever the road surface, and the system also reduces the amount of wheel work required of the driver: the steering responds more directly and far fewer corrections are necessary. Moreover, the inherent propensity of conventional all-wheel-drive vehicles to understeer is eliminated. An improvement in traction is also impressively noticeable (on road surfaces with differing friction levels, in particular), and active safety is markedly enhanced as a result. The driver can see how Dynamic Performance Control is operating on the display, with arrows at all four wheels visualizing where the engine power is currently being sent.
An open door to controlled drifts.
Among the other highlights of the overall concept behind the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M is Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The control functions of DSC have been Optimized over previous versions of the system to improve driving dynamics further still. The extra functions which have become part of DSC enhance active safety (Brake Standby, Brake Drying, Fading Compensation) and comfort (Start-Off Assistant, parking brake with automatic hold function).
Dynamic Stability Control allows the driver to choose from three modes: DSC on, MDM (M Dynamic Mode), DSC off. While DSC on counteracts understeer and oversteer to great effect with selective brake activation and torque reductions, MDM allows greater wheel slip – to give keen drivers the chance to execute some mild drifts. However, the driver aids will also intervene to assist the driver in this mode if a predefined limit is exceeded. Deactivating DSC (through DSC off) gives the driver the chance to fully explore the vehicle's limits on the track and nudge the vehicle into power oversteer (i.e. a drift) using the accelerator. In this mode, the system will only intervene in extreme situations involving significant shifts in lateral acceleration.
The new M TwinPower Turbo engine. A V8 with even more torque, backed by an emotionally rich soundtrack.
To say the newly developed engine of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M has a pounding heartbeat would be something of an understatement. After all, the 4.4-liter V8 uses innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology – consisting of cross-bank exhaust manifolds, a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC – to push torque and output to higher levels still. This unrivalled combination ensures that a strong wave of torque is maintained from low revs and allows direct and rapid responses, linear power delivery and customary M soundtrack.
Maximum performance meets outstanding efficiency.
The peak output of the new M turbocharged engine powering the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is, at 567 hp, three percent higher than that of its predecessor and is available between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. At the same time, the engine's peak torque has been boosted by around 10 percent to 553 lb-ft, which can be enjoyed across an extremely broad rev band – from 2,200 to 5,000 rpm. The extraordinary power development of this M turbocharged engine allows the new M versions of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.0 seconds. The top speed of both is electronically limited to 155 mph.
The outstanding efficiency of the new M TwinPower Turbo engine is illustrated by its 20 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions in the in the European cycle (official EPA values will be available closer to the start of sales) compared to its predecessor. All of which means that the range of the two vehicles on a single, identically sized tank of fuel has increased by 26 percent to 475 miles) in each case (European cycle).
Optimized responses.
The turbocharged V8 engine fitted in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M delivers impressive performance with lightning-fast responsiveness. The key factors here are the engine's High Precision Direct Injection (2900 psi injection pressure), state-of-the-art VALVETRONIC system and cross-bank exhaust manifolds, which send two converged exhaust gas streams to drive the two TwinScroll turbochargers through four separate exhaust ducts.
The new engine features a closed-deck crankcase with an extremely rigid construction. This enables higher cylinder pressures to be achieved, paving the way for improved power output. A forged, torsionally stiff crankshaft is used to transfer the impressive torque, its low weight contributing to a significant reduction in rotating masses and thus a further sharpening of the engine's responses.
From race track to road.
In the development of every model at BMW M GmbH, a familiar maxim applies: it must be "fit for the Nordschleife". The aim in the development of BMW M cars is to master the world's most challenging race track at race speed without a hitch. The extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration generated when lapping the Ring places huge demands on the engine's oil supply. But sophisticated oil sump and suction snorkel geometry allows the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M to safely operate up to 1.2 g lateral acceleration.
The cooling systems for the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are similarly track-ready, as highlighted the first time you set eyes on the vehicles by the large air intakes in the front end. A combination of low-temperature and high-temperature radiators ensures that the optimum temperature is maintained for engine cooling fluid, charge air, engine oil and transmission oil – even when venturing into high-performance territory.
The exhaust system has been modified to satisfy the sporting ambitions of the new M models. A distinctively familiar BMW M engine note resonates out across the whole rev range via electrically controlled flaps, which open or close according to demand, and sounds even sportier and richer than that of its predecessor. Selecting one of the preconfigured driving modes, moreover, engages a finely balanced set-up that also provides acoustic feedback on the engine load at any one time.
The chassis. Hitting the heights of agility, precision, poise and assurance.
The new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M once again set the pace in the high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupe segments thanks to extensive chassis upgrades. These combine to provide outstanding performance together with unbeatable directional stability and excellent traction, along with the type of neutral self-steering typical of M vehicles, in particular when accelerating out of corners and approaching with the dynamic limits.
To this end, the double-wishbone front suspension features revised kinematics. A modified upper wishbone (increase in camber, optimized camber progression and steering pivot axis) allows a further increase in cornering force potential and agility. At the same time, M-specific elastokinematics with more rigid bearings improve wheel guidance and therefore directional stability – both at the front suspension as well as the Integral-IV rear suspension (an independent suspension system with anti-squat and anti-dive geometry). Firmer suspension spring tuning and a 10-milimeter drop in ride height team up with the Active Roll Stabilization to bring about an effective reduction in body roll, pitch and yaw. One of the most important interfaces between driver and vehicle is the steering. Here, BMW M GmbH's high-performance models have set the benchmark from day one when it comes to providing a direct steering feel, precise feedback on the driving conditions and a finely-tuned balance when exploring the dynamic limits. The outstanding performance of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M are also showcased through their M design signatures. The close ties between the two models – they have identical performance and equally strong dynamic potential – are reflected particularly clearly in the shared design of the front end with its large air intakes. However, the individual characters of the two high-performance Sport models are still very distinct, as is clear the first time they come into view. The BMW X5 M reinforces its presence and functionality with its upright stature, long roofline and large window surfaces. By contrast, the BMW X6 M displays the unmistakable, flowing lines of a BMW Sports Activity Coupe through its gently curved glasshouse, sloping roofline and pronounced wedge shape. AAX reported a large 3Q14 core loss of RM175m, taking the 9M loss to RM394m, higher than our full-year loss estimate. AAX underperformed as competitive intensity did not let up, causing lower-than-expected yields. But the future is bright for AAX because it is executing well-thought out moves to cross over today's difficulties, including aircraft sales and bond issues to raise cash, but also capacity cuts to Australia and an expansion of its profitable wet-lease business. Together with the lower fuel price, we finally believe the worse is over for AAX and upgrade FY15-16 EPS and raise the recommendation from Reduce to Hold, with a higher target price of RM0.78, using sector average of 8x CY17 P/E (from 1.75x P/BV previously).

Highlights of 3Q14

AAX reported its fourth consecutive quarterly loss, since aggressive capacity expansion into Australia late-2013 triggered a price war. Substantial losses were also reported for North Asia, due to the launch of Nagoya in March and Xi'an in July 2014. Revenue per ASK capacity (RASK) fell yoy for the fifth consecutive quarter. Although RASK rose 6.5% qoq, this could not prevent a sequential increase in core losses as a higher proportion of operating leases increased the level of aircraft maintenance provisions and also leasing costs.

Fund raising options

AAX may issue convertible bonds of around RM330m to RM500m to plug the shortfall of cash reserves, as well as consider the issue of equity as a last resort. AAX has shareholder approval to issue up to 237m shares (10% of its share base), and board approval for an equity issue of at most RM165m. Just this month, AAX sold and leased back (S&LB) two of the eight planes on its balance sheet, and all new Airbus deliveries in 2014 and beyond will likely be S&LB.

Tackling overcapacity

To address the overcapacity issue, AAX will (1) sell two of its eight A330 deliveries in 2015 without leasing back, (2) defer four of the eight deliveries in 2016, and (3) defer three of the eight deliveries in 2017. AAX will also wet-lease more aircraft to other airlines during 2Q/3Q15, and cut back Australian flights during those lull quarters. Hence, ASK capacity growth in 2015-16 will be cut down to just 5% p.a. Together with the beneficial impact of low oil prices, we expect AAX to reduce its FY15 loss materially, and turn a profit in FY16.

Market likely to consolidate

BURSA Malaysia is expected to remain in a consolidation mode this week amid lack of buying impetus and weak market sentiments.
Analysts said investors will continue to take a wait-and-see strategy before the year-end window-dressing mood starts in December. The absence of new catalysts has led the local bourse to be on the declining trend in the last couple of weeks, they added.
The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) lost 13.16 points to close at 1,809.13, making it the worst performer among key regional markets last week. This was despite Asian shares rising after latest statistics showed broad United States economic strength, while the yen rebounded from overnight multi-year lows.
Analysts believe that global growth will start to re-strengthen, which could potentially brighten up prospects in the global equity markets, including Malaysia.
"On the local front, we expect earnings growth to bounce back, driven by capacity expansion, merger and acquisition, and other corporate exercises to create new growth catalyst," said an analyst.
"The weaker ringgit is also a catalyst for the bearish market sentiment. Furthermore, the government has decided to stop petrol subsidies come December 1 and this added more concern of higher inflation for 2015 that may prompt the central bank to raise key interest rates," he added.
Analysts also expect the FBM
KLCI to test the 1,800-point psychological level, saying that if the market failed to be supported at this level, it may continue to fall downwards to the next support level of 1,770 points.
Meanwhile among stocks in focus include SapuraKencana Petroleum, Mah Sing Group and IJM Corp.
The Umno General Assembly, which kicks off tomorrow, is also expected to be closely watched by the market

NEW YORK: Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's new long-term debt rose in initial trading as the Internet company's US$8 billion (RM27 billion) debut gave traders, who were allocated bonds in the sale, the opportunity to turn quick profits.
The company's US$2.25 billion of 3.6 per cent bonds due in November 2024 years rose 0.61 cent from its issue price to 100.4 cents on the dollar in trading after the sale on Thursday, according to Trace, the bond-price reporting system of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
"There's big global demand for this deal," said Matthew Duch, money manager at Bethesda, Maryland-based Calvert Investments Inc., whose firm has orders to buy the new offering.
Debt due in 10 or more years rose more in secondary trading than shorter maturities from the six-part sale.
The company got at least US$57 billion of orders from investors, more than seven times the securities offered for sale.
Founded by its chairman Jack Ma, Alibaba raised a record US$25 billion in its initial public offering in September.
"Given the strength of the IPO, this deal was expected to follow through as well," Duch said, referring to yesterday's note sale.

Shell wins India tax case

MUMBAI: Anglo-Dutch energy giant Royal Dutch Shell has won a multi-million dollar court battle against the Indian authorities.
The Bombay High Court ruled in favour of Shell, whose Indian unit was accused of under-pricing shares issued to its parent firm by about 180 billion rupees (RM10.08 billion).
The company had challenged a demand by India authorities for tax on the interest that would have been earned.
The judges on Tuesday quashed the income tax department order, a move Shell welcomed.
"This is a positive outcome which should provide a further boost to the government initiatives to improve the investment climate," the company said in a statement.
The high tax claim was one in a series ordered by the authorities on foreign firms, including HSBC, IBM and Nokia.
Foreign companies allege that Indian tax laws are sometimes applied in an uneven and capricious manner, making it difficult to do business in the country.
Equentis Capital equities director Vikram Dhawan said the ruling in the Shell case was "a very positive development", which showed India "is walking the talk of being friendly and fair to businesses".

EPF investment income rises

THE Employees Provident Fund (EPF) registered RM205.58 million higher investment income to RM10.32 billion for the third quarter ended September 30 2014 from RM10.11 billion in the same period last year.
In a statement yesterday, the fund attributed the performance to equity investments, which contributed 61 per cent to the total quarterly investment income.
"Investment income from equities amounted to RM6.34 billion, an increase of RM637.05 million year-on-year, contributed by domestic and global portfolios which benefited from better market conditions."
As at end-September, EPF's total investment assets registered an increase of RM54.74 billion to RM622.78 billion from RM568.04 billion in the third quarter last year.
During the quarter under review, loans and bonds achieved RM1.71 billion in income while Malaysian Government Securities and Equivalents income amounted to RM1.62 billion and Money Market Instruments posted an income of RM197 million.
The fund, which invested over 40 per cent of its investments in syariah-compliant assets, had a 23 per cent total overseas exposure in more than 30 countries comprising both developed and emerging markets.
As the custodian of retirement savings for 14 million members, the EPF aims to provide at least a return of two per cent above inflation over a three-year rolling period.
Chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said the equity portfolio continued to deliver strong performance for two consecutive quarters. However, both the domestic and global equity markets have started signalling volatility.
"We foresee challenges in the financial years ahead and we will continue to uphold our long-term investment strategy focusing on the fund's objective of ensuring sustainable and stable real returns.
"Next year, we will adopt the environmental, social and governance principles, starting with fixed-
income instruments and followed by other asset classes in line with our ethical, responsible and diversified long-term investment strategy," he added.

RHB Research: Fuel subsidy cut positive for economy

KUALA LUMPUR: The fuel subsidy removal by the government is a positive move and will not have a significant impact on the economy, a research firm said.
RHB Research Institute said it believes the decision was right as it can ease the government's subsidy burden, given that falling crude oil prices will impact oil revenue negatively.
It will also put pressure on the government's budget deficit.
"We do not expect the move to impact the economy negatively, as we believe consumers as well as businesses can adjust and will likely get used to it over time.
"The savings from the fuel subsidy can be used for more productive purposes, such as developing and improving the country's competitiveness," it said in a note.
The government last Friday announced that the retail prices of RON95 petrol and diesel will be fixed on a managed float system from December 1.
It may consider introducing a multi-tiered targeted fuel subsidy mechanism later if oil prices were to rise again, and the move is to help deal with the rising cost of living for the mid- to lower-income groups.
RHB Research said the managed float system will likely prevent businesses from simply raising prices each time the fuel subsidy is cut.

SYDNEY: BHP Billiton yesterday outlined plans to cut costs further as the world's biggest miner battles falling commodity prices, pointing to its planned demerger as helping to drive productivity gains.
The Anglo-Australian resources group is aiming to simplify and strengthen its business, and said it was looking to save US$4 billion (RM13.3 billion) a year in running costs - US$500 million more than previously flagged - by the end of the 2017 financial year.
Chief executive Andrew Mackenzie said the proposed spin-off of some poorer performing assets, including aluminium, manganese, silver and selected coal and nickel operations, would allow BHP to better organise operations.
"By significantly simplifying the portfolio, the proposed demerger will allow us to redesign BHP Billiton and create an organisation that supports better productivity," he said in an investor presentation.
"The group's core assets (such as iron ore and copper) generated more than 96 per cent of operating profit in the 2014 financial year, so we can cut complexity and lower costs without losing the benefits of scale and diversity.
"Put simply, we can organise a company that operates 12 large, core assets differently to one with 30 operated assets of varying sizes across a broader range of commodities."
A vote on the demerger is expected in May.

EU plans risk-sharing fund for investment

BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) is planning a €21 billion (RM86.91) fund to share the risks of new projects with private investors, two EU officials said.
The new entity is designed to have an impact of about 15 times its size, making it the anchor of the EU's €300 billion investment programme, according to the officials.
European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker is due to announce the three-year initiative this week.
The commission will pledge as much as €16 billion in guarantees for the vehicle, which will also include €5 billion from the European Investment Bank, the officials said.
Loans, lending guarantees and stakes in equity and debt will be part of its toolbox, with the goal to jumpstart private risk-taking so that stalled projects can get off the ground.
Juncker's investment plan aims to combine EU resources and regulatory changes "to crowd in more private investment in order to make real investments a reality", EU vice-president Jyrki Katainen said on November 14 in Bratislava.
The plan is one element of the European Union's economic strategy and "not a magic wand with which we will be able to miraculously invest ourselves out of a difficult economic climate". he said.

JAKARTA: Indonesia's petrol-price hike may put the brakes on the speed at which consumers in Southeast Asia's biggest car market buy cars and switch to four-wheels from two.
President Joko Widodo last week cut subsidies and raised petrol prices more than 30 per cent to open the way for budget and other reforms.
In the long-term, the change should strengthen the Indonesian economy, now growing at its slowest pace in five years. In the short-run, it may impact car sales.
"Next year car sales probably won't grow," said Leonardo Henry Gavaza, a senior research manager at Bahana Securities.
"Motorbike sales will be more resilient."
Growth rates have been declining since 2010's stunning 58 per cent rise. January-October saw only a 1.8 per cent increase for a year earlier, reflecting how annual economic growth has slipped to five per cent.
Jongkie Sugiarto, co-chairman of Indonesia's automotive association Gaikindo, said most people will find the higher fuel price affordable though some could be "thinking twice" about buying a car.
One factor crimping sales next year will be that right after prices were raised, the central bank raised its policy rate 25 basis points to 7.75 per cent to contain inflation expectations.
It was the first time Indonesia's benchmark rate changed in a year.
Nearly all buyers of cars and motorbikes use credit, so financing for them becomes expensive with higher interest rates.
Fitch Ratings has said some Indonesians will "delay their cars purchases" and choose more affordable motorcycles due to higher fuel prices.
But it said any impact on sales following subsidy cuts "is likely to be temporary and the risk profiles of auto players likely will not be materially impaired".
Fitch noted that in the 12 months after then-president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2005 raised fuel prices by 88 per cent, car sales plunged 43 per cent compared with the preceding year. Motorbike sales fell 12 per cent.

LONDON: Brent crude oil stabilised around US$80 a barrel yesterday as world powers extended talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, maintaining sanctions and preventing an immediate increase in Iranian oil supply to world markets.
The decision came ahead of a key meeting of Opec to discuss production in response to a collapse in oil prices.
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the talks between Iran and six world powers had made clear progress and would resume next month. Negotiators had until June to come up with a comprehensive deal.
Iran has reduced its stockpile of low-enriched uranium gas and taken other actions to comply with the terms of last year's interim nuclear agreement.
Brent was trading at US$80.00 a barrel, down 36 cents, by 1440GMT. The contract hit a one-week high of US$81.61 on Friday. US crude was also down 15 cents at US$76.36.
Oil prices have fallen 30 percent since June, with Brent plunging from a high above US$115 and US crude from above US$107.
Ministers from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries meet on November 27 and may decide to cut output.
Fund managers say oil prices could plunge to $60 a barrel if the OPEC fails to make significant cuts to reduce an oversupply on world markets.
"The longer the price stays weak, the more amicable Opec members will be to follow a collective course of action that involves cutting," said Harry Tchilinguirian, senior oil strategist at French bank BNP Paribas
