Badly fitting condoms curb sexual pleasure, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2010) — Badly fitting condoms are not only likely to split and break, but they may also reduce sexual pleasure for both partners, suggests a study published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.

The researchers base their findings on 436 men between the ages of 18 and 67, all of whom were recruited via newspaper ads and a blog on the website of a condom sales company.

The men completed a questionnaire on the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction website about the fit of condom they had most recently used for penetrative sex with a female partner.

Almost half the participants (just under 45%) said that they had used a badly fitting condom when they had last had sex during the previous three months.

They were more than 2.5 times as likely to report breakage or slippage as those whose condoms were a good fit, and five times as likely to report penile irritation.

They were around twice as likely to say that the poorly fitting condom made it difficult for them and/or their partner to reach orgasm and that this curbed sexual pleasure for both parties.

They were also around twice as likely to say that their poorly fitting condom interfered with getting and maintaining an erection. And they were twice as likely to say they removed the condom before sex had ended.

The authors acknowledge that their study, which is the first of its kind to look at the impact of poorly fitting condoms on sexual functioning, is limited by its reliance on self report. Nevertheless, they say that the findings "emphasise the point that men and their female sex partners may benefit from public health efforts designed to promote the improved fit of condoms."

An accompanying podcast, featuring co-author Dr Bill Yarber, explains that the prospect of reduced pleasure and intimacy could put people off using condoms.

Dr Yarber voices concerns that pornography may distort body image, and emphasises the care needed in any public health or marketing campaigns to address the issue. Men won't buy condoms labelled as "small" or "extra small," he warns.

Hey guys, think you know everything there is to know about having sex with women? That erotic encyclopedia you carry around in your head may contain a lot of basic errors and omissions about women's sexuality -- errors that can lead to sex mistakes.

That's because -- after learning the facts of life -- most of us are left to figure out sex for ourselves. Guys tend to take a lot of cues from adult movies, and we all know how true-to-life those are. Experience may help, but many women can be shy when talking about what they like.

To help us with some sex tips, WebMD asked two acclaimed sex educators, Tristan Taormino and Lou Paget, to tell us what they think are the most common sex mistakes men make with women.

Taormino is a prolific author, lecturer, and video producer. Her latest project is the Expert Guide educational video series from Vivid Ed.

Paget is author of The Great Lover Playbook and other sex manuals, and she gives seminars nationwide.

Sex Mistake No.1: You Know What She Wants

Men often make assumptions about what a woman wants based upon what they've done with other women. But women aren't all the same.

"You develop a repertoire as you mature sexually, but you should never assume that what worked for the last person is going to work for this person," Taormino says.
That applies not only to sexual predilections, but also to relationships, she says. "There are women who can have no-strings-attached sex, and women who can get attached very easily, and then everyone in between."

Sex Mistake No. 2: You Have All She Needs

Some women can't have an orgasm with less than 3,000 rpm. No human tongue or fingers can generate that kind of vibration. But men typically think something is wrong if a woman needs a vibrator.

"If the only way that a woman can achieve orgasm is with a vibrator, she's not broken," Taormino says.

Think of a vibrator as your assistant, not your substitute. Many couples use vibrators together. "While you're doing one thing, or two things, the vibrator can be doing something else," Taormino says.

Sex Mistake No. 3: Sex Feels the Same for Men and Women
Paget says there tends to be a "huge disconnect" between men and women in the ways that sex feels good.

"When a man has intercourse with a woman, and his penis goes into her body, that sensation is so off the charts for most men, they cannot imagine that it isn't feeling the same way for her," Paget says. "It couldn't be further from the truth."

The inside of the vagina is probably less sensitive than the outer parts for most women. Also, deep thrusting may not feel so nice on the receiving end. If the penis is too long, "it feels like you're getting punched in the stomach," Paget says. "It makes you feel nauseous."

Sex Mistake No. 4: You Know Your Way Around a Woman's Anatomy

Most guys know generally what a clitoris is and where to find it. That's not to say that they really understand it.

More than 30 years ago, at the start of the "sexual revolution," a best-selling book called the Joy of Sex got Americans hip to the orgasmic importance of the clitoris. But the belief that women must be able to orgasm from vaginal penetration stubbornly persists.

"I still get letters from people who say things like, my wife can't [orgasm] from intercourse unless she has clitoral stimulation -- please help," Taormino says. "I want to write back and say, 'OK, what's the problem?'"

"For the majority of women, it's not going to happen that way," Paget says.
Men also lack information about how to touch it and how sensitive it is, Taormino says.

A touch that's bliss for one woman may feel like nothing special, or may even be painful for someone else. Some prefer indirect stimulation.

How can you find out how she likes to be touched? Try asking her.

Sex Mistake No. 5: Wet = Turned On
Guys sometimes get hung up if a woman doesn't get slippery enough for easy penetration. Don't worry about it.

"I think there's a myth that if you're turned on, you're wet," Taormino says. Not necessarily.
Some women tend to get wetter than others, and how much natural lubrication a woman has can change from day to day. It varies by the phase of her menstrual cycle, and it's subject to influences like stress and medications.

Sex Mistake No. 6: Silence Is Golden
A lot of guys think they should be silent during sex, but unless you speak up, your partner has to guess what's doing it for you and what isn't.

If you're respectful about it, a woman who wants to please you will probably appreciate some directions.

"I'm not saying push her head in your lap," Taormino says. "I think that, 'this is how I like it,' is a very useful conversation to have."

What it takes is four to six hours a day for six months for an average increase of 32% of length of non-erect penis.

Despite years of jokes and scepticism, researchers found a penis enlargement device that might actually works. Penis extender, also known as penis stretcher or penis traction device, may now be regarded as a minimally invasive and effective treatment option to elongate the penile shaft (BJU International, July 9th 2008).

Italian researchers at the University of Turin, Italy, studied the effectiveness of penis extender involving 21 men with average age of 47 years. The extenders, known as the Andro Penis devices were to be used by these highly motivated volunteers for around 4 to 6 hours a day for a period of 6 months, with the traction added to 600g at the end of first months and gradually increased to 1200g by the end of six months.

Andro Penis is a penis stretcher or traction device developed and sold by AndroMedical. It consists of a plastic ring, two extender rods, and a silicon band to hold the penis in place. It is designed to be used for penis enlargement and straightening of penile curvature (Peyronie's disease). The same device is also sold under the names of SizeGenetics and FastSize.

At the end of the study, the result showed an increased length of non-erect or flaccid penis by 32% (average of 3.72 inches as compared to initial average penis length of 2.82 inches) as well as improved erectile function up to 36%. Acceptable to good level of satisfaction with penis length and sex life were also reported by the participants though no significant changes in penile girth were obtained. Five patients however, failed to complete the course for different reasons, including "pain and penile bruising".

Penis enlargement using penis extender device may become a better alternative to penis enlargement surgery which is known to hold the risk of a number of complications and require clinical criteria, which is often not met by many men wish to enlarge their penis size. If further studies confirm this result, penis extender or penis stretcher devices would be recommended as a first line treatment option.

Spider venom: Impotence remedy new hope

The venom of a Brazilian spider might be Viagra’s new rival, researchers suggested.

Men may be able to benefit from the toxin of a deadly Brazilian spider venom to treat impotence, a new study proposed. Researches from Brazil and the Medical College of Georgia has purified and isolated the toxin of a deadly Brazilian spider, Phoneutria nigriventer, in a laboratory test and injected it to rats suffering from high blood pressure and severe impotence. Results showed increase level of Nitric Oxide leading to improved erection. The research was presented to the American Heart Association’s 63rd High Blood Pressure Research Conference on September 24th 2009.

The Brazilian wandering spider is considered the world’s most venomous spider and commonly found throughout Central and South America. The bite of the Brazilian spider is known to cause priapism, a condition of painful erection that lasts for hours; and even death.

Similar to Viagra, the spider venom also works to increase the level of nitric oxide but through different mechanism, according to the researchers.

Though this research provides a new hope in finding a new treatment of male impotence, more works are needed and for now, scientists are still in a long way from using the spider venom as a chemical to treat male impotence.

Penis size does matter?

Are big penis really matter in sexual relationship? How important it is to have a bigger penis to a man? And how important is a partner’s penis size to a woman?

One of men’s biggest concern, indeed, is the size of their penis. In an online survey conducted to find out how satisfied men are with the size of their penis, it was revealed that as much as 89% of men wish for a bigger penis. Why is that so?

The idea that bigger is better makes many men are especially concern with their penis size. Because of this, penis is considered the most important part of a man’s body, and some even equate masculinity and power to penis size.

In fact, bigger penis are so important that men who consider themselves to have larger than average size penis have higher self esteem, better general health and overall body satisfaction. There are even cases where men had gone on to have problems with impotence after someone made a remark about their penis size.

A study published in British Journal of Urology International in 2006 found that, even a little increment in penis size can be sufficient to satisfy a man. The study, which examined the effectiveness of penis pump as a ‘treatment’ to permanently increase the size of penis, found an average increase of penis size of 0.3 cm at the end of its six weeks research. Though the number was considered not statistically significant, interestingly, 30% of men involved in the study reported that they were satisfied with the ‘treatment’ given. Provided the small increase of penis size, it is not sure what the participants were satisfied with. Probably, even a little help at increasing the size of penis is enough to enhance a man’s overall body satisfaction.
Obviously, bigger penis does matter to many men – at least as a boost to their self-belief and perhaps their confidences in a relationship; even when many researchers insist that penis size should not be an important factor for any man to enjoy a secure relationship.

Next question... what do women think?

What do women think of this issue? Do they share similar concern as their male partner regarding penis size? Or is penis size is not related to women’s sexual enjoyment?

An online survey done to find how satisfied men and women are with the size of their penis (or that of their partner’s) revealed that a vast majority of women are actually happy with the size of their partner’s penis. The study, which involved more than 50,000 men and women reported that up to 85% of women do not have any complaint regarding their partner’s penis size.

On top of the survey, the distinguished American sexuality researchers, Masters and Johnson, also believed that the size of a partner’s penis does not have any effect on a woman’s sexual satisfaction – at least physically. This belief is based on the fact that a woman’s vagina accommodates to fit any size of a penis, and therefore, they concluded that any penis size will fit and provide adequate sexual stimulation to a woman.

However, on the contrary, a small study in 2001 by Russel Eisenman of University of Texas-Pan American conducted to learn the effect of penis width vs penis length on women’s sexual satisfaction revealed that a large majority of women involved in the study(45 out of 50) reported that wider penis is preferred to a long penis. The study involving 50 women also revealed that none of the women could not tell any difference between wider or longer penis to sexual satisfaction. Despite the result, from the study, it is not known why wider penis is preferred but it is speculated that wider penis provides better feeling of fullness and greater clitoral stimulation than longer penis, which is thought to be psychologically and perhaps physically satisfying. Nevertheless, the study, though deserves further researches and evaluations, is still too small to represent the women population as a whole.

So, is penis size really does not matter to a woman’s sexual satisfaction? Or maybe there are more to a woman’s sexual satisfaction, and size of penis is only part of it? Or can it be that physical effect is not a measure to a woman’s sexual desire and enjoyment – the same reason why Viagra fails in women?

Viagra Deaths: A mystery answered

The controversy surrounding Viagra deaths peaked in 2000 when a study found that out of 1,473 adverse drug events related to Viagra use reported to FDA, 522 Viagra deaths were recorded. According to the study which was conducted at Cedar Sinai Medical Centre, most of the deaths reported were due to heart complications.

What even more worrying is that most of the cases involved men younger than 65 years old with no history of heart problem. 70% of Viagra deaths reported involved standard dosage recommendation of 50mg and two-third of the cases occurred within 4 to 5 hours after taking Viagra. The question is, what went wrong? After all, Viagra was first studied to fight heart disease.

Following the report of the study, several researches were carried out to see if Viagra cause death from heart attack. However, the result of the subsequent researches were even more puzzling – instead of confirming Viagra to be at guilt of fatal heart attack, the impotence drug was found to be safe and the use of Viagra does not seems to increase the risk of heart attack.

An independent study involving 5,391 men in the UK found no evidence of increased risk of heart attack or death from heart disease in men taking Viagra. In addition, another study involving 100 American men with stable heart disease found the condition was not made worse by impotence drug Viagra. The later study, which was the first to learn Viagra’s effect on the heart using an exercise stress test, showed that impotence drug Viagra does not increase the risk of heart attack in men who do not have severe heart disease or not taking nitrates.

Therefore, what happened in the earlier report of 522 cases of Viagra deaths?

Viagra deaths mystery unveiled:

A new study on blood clotting mechanism finally explained the small number of Viagra deaths (considering 16 million Viagra users by the years the study was reported).

For 20 years, scientists believe a compound found in cells called cGMP acts to stop platelet from clumping, which if occur, can lead to formation of blood clots and block the normal blood flow to the heart or any other organ. The impotence drug Viagra is known to increase cGMP level in the blood, therefore, it was originally thought to fight heart disease not only by dilating blood vessels but also by preventing the formation of blood clot within the vessels.

Platelets are disk-shaped cells that freely circulate in the blood. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets form sticky surfaces, adhering to one another and to the damaged area to plug the hole in the injured vessels. While platelet clumping initially helps to minimize the loss of blood when injury occurs, if the process continues, it can also lead to formation of blood clot that blocks a vessel - a life-threatening condition called thrombosis.

However, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine found that instead of totally prevent platelet from clumping, cGMP initially causes platelets to clump to seal a wound, but later reverses its action to stop an excessive buildup of clots that might block a blood vessel. Therefore, if a person were already at risk of thrombosis – for example, a damaged blood vessel was already narrowed - even the initial accumulation of platelets could be sufficient to cause a problem.

The study, which was published in the scientific journal Cell, also revealed that though Viagra increases cGMP level in the blood, the impotence drug by itself does not cause platelet to clump. However, Viagra may present a risk in patients with pre-existing conditions such as atherosclerosis.

Viagra has an excellent safety profile and is well tolerated in the wide variety of men suffering from impotence, provided it is taken as advised. Pfizer’s own guidance stated that men who had recently suffered heart attack, on nitrates or has a serious heart condition that they are advised against sexual intercourse should not be given Viagra.

Therefore, having a doctor’s evaluation before taking Viagra is important to make sure you are suitable for the impotence drug, even if you prefer to buy Viagra online.

Watermelon a natural impotence cure?

The extra nitric oxide yielded by watermelon could also help in angina, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problem. Therefore, while there is still no conclusive evidence to claim watermelon as a natural impotence cure, there is no harm trying watermelon and see what it may do to you.

A study by a team of Argentinian scientists found Viagra’s potential benefit to soften the effect of jetlag. In early 2005, the world was taken aback by a report by Dr Horward Pomeranz, a neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Minnesota, who became the first doctor to suggest a connection between Viagra and blindness caused by a condition called the non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

To Dr Pomeranz, it made sense that Viagra, the drug used to help men in the treatment of impotence by altering the blood flow to the penis, could also affect the vision by altering the blood circulation to the nerve in the eye.

The condition, which is also known as eye stroke, is caused by blockage of blood flow to the optic nerve. This painless condition causes a rapid reduction in the vision, often upon awakening. One episode of NAION in one eye increases the chance of similar condition in the other eye; and in the most severe cases, NAOIN can even lead to blindness.

Can NAION happen in men not taking Viagra?

A recent article published by Medical Tribune (a leading Asian Medical News since 1983 which is available online and in print) reported of a warning on severe threat to men posed by non-prescription male impotence pill products sold over the counter.

The article, which was published in its 1-15th July 2009 edition quoted a study by investigators from the Hospital Authority Toxicology Reference Laboratory, Hong Kong of cases of low blood sugar levels that occured after the patients took male impotence pill products. These products are said to contain both sildenafil (the ingredient used in impotence pill Viagra) and glibenclamide (an ingredient used in diabetic medication to lower the blood sugar level), though these ingredients did not appear on the product label.
