This week marks the real start of the golf season with the PGA Tour's first full-field event at the Sony Open in Honolulu. The first round was washed out Thursday because of heavy overnight rain that left too much water on Waialae Country Club. The first two rounds will be played today and Saturday, with 36 holes played Sunday.

Free Press sports writer Carlos Monarrez highlights what you need to know about golf -- and its Michigan ties -- in 2011.
WHEN WILL TIGER PLAY?: Tiger Woods is expected to make his season debut Jan. 27 in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where he has won seven times. For the first time in his career, Woods, 35, is coming off a winless season. In 12 tournaments, Woods had only two top-10 finishes -- albeit both were four-place ties in the Masters and the U.S. Open -- and he lost the top spot in the world ranking for the first time in more than five years.
MICHIGAN MEN: The Great Lakes State will boast two players on the PGA Tour this year. Rookie Justin Hicks, 36, grew up in Riverview and graduated from Grosse Ile High and Michigan. He earned a promotion from the Nationwide Tour's money list last season. Veteran Tom Gillis, 42, of Lake Orion had a strong season in 2010, when he won $1.16 million and finished 76th on the money list. Gillis will open the season at the Sony.

THE MAJORS: This year's rotation features the Masters on April 7-10, the U.S. Open on June 16-19 at Congressional in Bethesda, Md., the British Open on July 14-17 at Royal St. George's in England and the PGA Championship on Aug. 11-14 at Atlanta Athletic Club.
SENIOR MOMENT: Speaking of majors, the U.S. Senior Open returns July 28-31 to Inverness Club in Toledo, which hosted the seniors' most prestigious major in 2003. Let this year's tourney whet your appetite for next year's installment at Indianwood Golf and Country Club in Lake Orion.
FARR ON HOLD: With a major coming to the Toledo area and the economy still wheezing along, the Jamie Farr tournament, a longtime fixture on the LPGA tour, will take a one-year hiatus.
MICHIGAN WOMEN: But as one women's event exits, another enters. The Futures Tour, the LPGA's main developmental tour, comes to the Upper Peninsula when Sweetgrass Golf Club near Harris hosts the inaugural Island Resort Championship on June 24-26.
HAPPY 100TH: The venerable Michigan Amateur celebrates its centennial by going Up North. This year's event will be on the Heather Course at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs.
WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR: The 2012 golf calendar in Michigan could be a whopper. We'll have the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, plus the Farr near Toledo and a potential return of the PGA Tour with a General Motors event as a possibility at Detroit Golf Club.

67-year-old teeing it up in Sony Open field

2011-01-11T11:38:00.000-08:00

Dave Eichelberger is a name you might vaguely recognize. The four-time PGA Tour winner and, perhaps most notably, the 1999 US Senior Open winner is now 67-years-old. And this week, he will be making his first PGA Tour start in more than 17 years.

Eichelberger is a part of the field at the Sony Open in Hawaii. How did he manage to get into the event? He won the PGA Aloha Section Stroke Play Championship last September. Shooting his age in the final round of that event to win earned him a berth into the Honolulu PGA Tour stop.
The ’99 US Senior Open winner was an ironman during both his PGA Tour and Champions Tour careers. As Ann Miller of the Honolulu Advertiser shares, Eichelberger is second in career starts among the PGA, Champions and Nationwide Tours. He moved to Hawaii the year before his USSO triumph and has remained there since.
Waialae, host to the Sony Open, provides Eichelberger with a chance to become the oldest player in PGA Tour history to make a cut. Ben Hogan currently holds the distinction, but at 7068 yards, Waialae is short enough to allow the elder player to be able to compete. With knowledge of the tricky greens, Eichelberger is not as much of a long shot to make the cut as one might think.

Eichelberger last played in this event seven years ago, missing the cut badly with a two round total of 17-over par. Prior to that, his last start at Waialae came in 1991 with a similar MC. His best career finish in 18 starts in the event is a T8 in 1983.
The oldest player to play in a PGA Tour event is Jerry Barber, who played in the 1994 Buick Invitational at age 77.

SA stars boost Eastern Cape golf development

2011-01-09T06:05:00.000-08:00

South Africa’s leading golfers have again answered the call from golf development, teaming up to support the growth of the game in the Eastern Cape.

At the official gala dinner for the Africa Open, Retief Goosen, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel announced their joint donation of R100 000 to golf development in the region. “The Africa Open has done an amazing job in bringing top professional golf back to the Eastern Cape, and as players we feel strongly about continuing this process by giving the children here something to aspire to in the game, and also the means to do so,” said double US Open champion Goosen.

Councillor Zukisa Faku, the Executive Mayor of Buffalo City, was delighted with the announcement.
“We share a common pride for an event that has come to represent honour and prestige for the people of Buffalo City, indeed for the people of the entire Amathole District.

“The Africa Open has been a story of successful cooperation between local government, the private sector and the national and international golfing fraternity.
“We need to concentrate the willing efforts of national and international professionals in a programme to establish a golf academy here in Buffalo City.

“We have to think outside the box to anchor golf as an alternative sport for our youth, allowing them to graduate from the pro-ams to the professional stage.”
Khaya Ngqula, the promoter of the Africa Open, also announced the formation of The Richer Future Foundation, which aims to provide further impetus to golf development initiatives in this region.

“The Foundation will focus on golf, and other sports, that can help with deserving causes in this region. We have taken the time to think carefully about this to make sure it runs professionally and makes the kind of real impact it needs to.”

Both Oosthuizen and Schwartzel were also delighted to partner development initiatives in this region, having both been involved in the Development Golf Clinic at the start of this year’s tournament, where they and other professionals hosted children from the South African Golf Development Board.

“These are our future champions and we feel honoured to be able to share our time and resources with them in helping them to achieve their goals,” said Oosthuizen.
“We all had to start somewhere, with somebody giving us help. I’m proud to be able to do the same now,” added Schwartzel.

Japan's Hiratsuka wins Black Mountain Masters golf

HUA HIN, Thailand — Japan's Tetsuji Hiratsuka claimed his third title of the season Sunday when he won the 600,000-dollar Black Mountain Masters after a play-off against Thai youngster Namchoak Tantipokakul.
Hiratsuka triumphed in the Asian Tour's season-finale at the Black Mountain Golf Club with a par at the first play-off hole on the par-five 18th to pip Namchoak, who bogeyed in extra time.

The Japanese veteran, who also won the Air Bagan Myanmar Open and Queen's Cup in Thailand earlier this season, signed off with a one-under-par 71 and was caught by a fast-charging Namchoak, who ended with a 65 for a 14-under-par 274 in a thrilling end to the season.

"After I missed a putt (to win in regulation), I knew I still had a chance in the play-off," said the 39-year-old Hiratsuka, whose 95,100-dollar cheque saw him end the season in fifth place on the final Order of Merit.
"There were no easy putts out there, even when the putts were short. I tried hard every day. I love the Asian Tour and now I want to concentrate on improving my world ranking and break into the top-50," added Hiratsuka, who was ranked 82nd entering the Black Mountain Masters.

Namchoak didn't quite live up to his nickname of "Lucky" despite a stunning final round which included seven birdies against no bogeys.

The 23-year-old found some consolation, however, as his 65,100-dollar cheque has helped him to earn his Asian Tour card for next season, with the Thai finishing 35th on the merit list.
Overnight leader Piya Swangarunporn was dealt a double blow when he missed out on the play-off by one shot after closing with a 73 to discover he had missed his Tour card by a mere 205 dollars.
It was also heartbreak for Lee Sung of South Korea, who bogeyed his last hole to finish one shot shy of the play-off in his round of 70.

Thai star Thongchai Jaidee, who was in the thick of battle, fell off the pace with a double bogey, bogey, bogey run from the 11th hole to eventually finish seventh, two shots back.

Que leads with Japanese duo in Thai golf tournament

HUA HIN, Thailand — A relaxed Angelo Que made a welcome return to form to share the first round lead with Japanese duo Tetsuji Hiratsuka and Daisuke Maruyama at the Black Mountain Masters on Thursday.
The Filipino brilliantly fired two eagles, four birdies and a lone bogey at the Black Mountain Golf Club for a seven-under-par 65 which was matched by his Japanese rivals in the Asian Tour's 600,000-dollar season finale.

South Korea's Lee Sung, who was born deaf but recently had an implant surgically placed in his right hear to help with his hearing, shot a 66 to share third with big-hitting local star Chapchai Nirat, countryman Atthaphon Prathummanee, India's Himmat Rai, England's Simon Griffiths and American Anthony Kang on a day of low scoring.

Three-time Order of Merit winner Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, fresh off a victory in Cambodia on Sunday, rued a cold putter after carding a 68 to trail by three shots while defending champion Johan Edfors of Sweden stumbled to a 74.
A bogey on his last hole failed to dampen Que's mood. "I'm just coming out for a good time and whatever happens, happen," said the Filipino, a three-time Asian Tour winner.
"Normally if I shoot seven under with a bogey on the last, I'll be so mad and depressed. But you know what, I still shot seven under. It's just a bogey. I think looking at things that way helps a lot."
Que's form dipped after he lifted a third career title in August in Malaysia as he started putting pressure on himself to achieve more success.

He realised his mistake and vowed to maintain his happy-go-lucky style, he said.
"The next time I win, I'll just let it go and do whatever I can and not think about anything," said Que.
A blazing finish with four closing birdies put Hiratsuka in the hunt for his third Asian Tour victory of the season.

"I hit it very solid but struggled with my putting on my front nine (started on the 10th tee). It started to click in my homeward nine and I sank four straight birdies which was a great way to end my round," said Hiratsuka, who won the Air Bagan Myanmar Open and Queen's Cup in Thailand this year.
His compatriot Maruyama, who finished 15th on the Japan Tour money list this year, was bogey free and got lucky on the second hole, which he eagled.
"I thought it (his three wood approach) was going to end up in the water hazard as I hit a low shot but luckily, it found the green and I holed a putt from 15 feet," said Maruyama, who is a two time Asian Tour winner.

GOLFER TINNING BOWS OUT AFTER DUBAI WIN

DUBAI,United Arab Emirates -- Iben Tinning of Denmark scripted a fairytale ending to her full-time professional golf career when she won the Dubai Ladies Masters with a birdie on the final hole.
At the Majlis course of Emirates Golf Club, the former European No1, playing her last competitive event as a Ladies European Tour member, closed with a round of three-under par 69 for a tournament total of 11-under par 278 to take the honours, two shots ahead of Sweden's Anna Nordqvist.
England's Melissa Reid finished in sole third position after making a bogey on the final hole, while first-round leader Florentyna Parker of England and LPGA Tour regular Christina Kim were tied fourth at six-under par 282.

American Michelle Wie saved her best for the last round, moving to joint sixth place at five-under 283 following the day's best round of five-under par 67. She was joined by the 2009 champion and world No7 In Kyung-Kim on the same score.
After collecting the biggest cheque of her career (75,000 euros), a delighted Tinning said she could barely come to terms with how her time on the Tour had climaxed.
"I still can't believe I won and it's just amazing," purred Tinning, who is due to resume her studies for a sports psychology degree.

"I really tried to keep strong out there and it was tough sometimes but I cannot believe this.
"It's just crazy to end my career like this. I know all of the people that helped me out and my parents and my husband (who caddied for her), I mean, it's such a great gift for everybody and we are just so happy.
"In terms of finishing my career on a high, nothing can beat this."
Tinning insisted that there would be no going back on her plans.
"No, no. It's not an option. I am on so many painkillers, it's just not fun anymore," she said.
"Obviously to win like this, it has been my main goal to finish on a high but my hip is just so bad. On 16, I had such a bad pain and I'm just happy it kept me through and that I can pick up the trophy."

Starting the day tied for lead with Reid, Tinning closed with a birdie and was hugged by almost every member of the Ladies European Tour on the 18th green.
With her husband Lasse alongside her, Tinning made the turn tied for the lead with Reid at nine-under, but back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th saw her establish a clear three-shot lead as the tenacious Englishwoman bogeyed the 10th.

Reid, the winner of the Turkish Open, however, refused to give up. She birdied the 13th to narrow the gap to two and then a bogey on the 15th by Tinning further reduced her lead to just one shot with three holes to play.
On 17th, Reid's 20-footer attempt for birdie agonizingly slid past, and she hit it into the right trees off the tee on the par-5 18th and finished with a bogey.
Nordqvist could have put Tinning under more pressure, but her birdie putts from eight feet on both the 17th and 18th holes failed to drop in.
