Amused vs Bemused

The English words amused and bemused are confused by some native English speakers.

Amused

Amused means entertained or made to laugh.

I was amused by his antics

The noun amusement refers either to the state of being amused or to something that amuses

What amusements do you have planned for the party?

Bemused

Bemused means to find something confusing or puzzling.

I was bemused by his sudden decision to quit
You look bemused; should I repeat the question?
Bemused, he asked me to explain

The noun bemusement means confusion or puzzlement.

He stared at me in bemusement
I shook my head in bemusement

The Bottom Line

I'm sure the confusion between amused and bemused comes out of the fact bemused is less common and so when people hear it for the first time, they notice the similarity to amused and think the two words must have a similar meaning. In fact, amused and bemused mean two completely different things.

Just remember that you are amused at an amusement park (like Great America or Disneyland), and you are bemused when you don't understand.

The misuse of bemused is so common in writing that I often have to read the sentence several times in order to determine whether the person really meant bemused (confused) or amused(entertained). I remember one author who consistently said bemused to mean "slightly amused." I didn't find it amusing in the slightest. :-)

The English words affect and effect are often confused by native speakers - don't let their mistakes affect your English.

Affect

Affect is a verb with several different meanings.

1. To have an influence on, contribute to a change in

What you do affects all of us
This decision will affect the outcome of the elections
Inflation is affected by natural disasters

2. To touch, move; to act on the emotions of

I was profoundly affected by this movie
His actions were not affected by her pleas

3. To simulate

He likes to affect a British accent
She always affected her eccentricity

In psychology, affect is a noun which refers to a "feeling" or "emotion":

Your son's lack of affect explains why you find it difficult to gauge his moods.

Effect

Effect is most commonly used as a noun, and has three meanings.

1. Result, something brought about by someone or something

What was the effect of her decision?
Side effects include nausea and fatigue
I don't think it will have any effect on the outcome
The law will go into effect tomorrow
You can clearly see the cause and effect

2. Something that gives the impression/sense of something else

The special effects were amazing
Mirrors will give the effect of a larger space
He said that just for effect

3. Effects can refer to belongings

Did you bring any personal effects?

As a verb, to effect means "to bring about, lead to a result"

The only way to effect change is to participate
What is the best way to effect these improvements?
This should effect a whole new way of thinking about it

The Bottom Line

The confusion between affect and effect comes out of the fact that affecting something leads to an effect. The two questions "How were you affected?" and "What was the effect on you?" mean almost exactly the same thing.

When you want to use one of these words as a noun, the one you want is probably effect. When you want a verb, most of the time you want affect. Effect is used as a verb only when it has a direct object and only when you mean "to bring about, lead to."

This is not one of my bigger grammar blunders, BUT I just saw some recent online grammar statistics that suggest that this is one of the most common grammar errors that people make when writing. So the big grammar lesson for the day: Is it Affect or Effect?

If you’ve been through the U.S. school system, you have learned at some point that there are dozens of grammatical rules BUT there are also a lot of grammatical exceptions. Almost every rule has one – an exception that is. And this grammar lesson is no different, but for once, I’m saying 99% of the time if you follow the basic rules for effect versus affect – you will get it “write” every time:)

AFFECT

Affect with an A is typically used as a VERB.

Definitions: have an effect on. make a difference to. move emotionally. attack or infect (with an illness).

Example: “That delicious chocolate martini affected the way I felt in the morning!”

Example: “Did it affect you when he asked for the engagement ring back?”

*Okay here is an exception. Many psychologists use “affect” as a noun to describe a client’s emotion, desire, or influencing behavior. But if you aren’t in the mental health biz, you’ll probably never use it in this way.

EFFECT

Effect with an E is typically used as a NOUN.

Definitions: a change that is the result or consequence of an action or other cause. use to refer to the state of being or becoming operative. a physical phenomena. an impression produced in the mind of a person. (effects) the lighting, sound or scenery used in a play, movie, or broadcast. personal belongings.

Example: “I love the effect that the delicious chocolate martini gave me after I drank it.”

Example: “I think he was going for a dramatic effect when he asked for the ring back in the supermarket!”

*Another exception? Yep. This is how you could use effect as a verb.

Definition: (often be effected) cause something to happen; bring about

Example: Budget cuts that were quietly effected over four years.

Again – most people don’t really use effect in this way, so don’t stress over it. You will probably most often use affect as a verb and effect as a noun.

Today I am going for something simple:

I vs Me

This is one of the most common things used incorrectly. Weird, right? Because it's also the easiest to see if you've done it incorrectly.

First, the basics.

"I" is a pronoun that must be the subject of the verb.

"Me" is a pronoun that must be the object of the verb.

As an English teacher I can describe it like this: "I" is a pronoun that must be the subject, never the object, of a verb. "Me" is a pronoun that must be the object, never the subject. (The same is true for he/him, she/her, we/us, etc.)

Make sense? Okay, let's move on to the example. I know you guys LOVE examples!

Tell me, is this following sentence correct?

Crystal and me went down to the store.

Sounds fine, right? Sure...it sounds okay. But it's wrong. The best way to tell if you've incorrectly used "I" or "Me" is to take out the other noun from the sentence and see how it looks. If I did that to this sentence, it would look like this:

Me went down to the store.

Oh my. You see the problem now?

I do believe, my dear students, that the example (and the simple way to correct it) says it all. Wouldn't you agree?

"Into" vs "In to"

WHAT???

You mean to tell me there's a difference between the two?
Ah...yes, there is. Now, before you start panicking, let me be honest. You probably already know the difference. And you probably don't mistake "into" for "in to". But, just in case, I'll give you this grammar lesson:

"Into" is a preposition which is often used to answer the question "where?". For example:

"Where are Jack and Jill?"
"They went up the hill."

Oh, wait...that won't work. LoL. Let's try that again.

"Where are Dick and Jane?"
"They went into the book."

Or something like:

"The dogs ran into the woods before realizing they were chasing a gust of wind." Silly dogs. ;-)

The "where" in the sentence is "into the woods".

Or "Into" is used as an analogy in time or when you speak about math. Like the following:

"It's well into November and the leaves haven't fallen off the trees yet."
"Six goes into twelve twice."
Basically, "into" is used A LOT.

The only time you actually use "in" and "to" apart is when they accidentally find themselves next to each other in the same sentence. They are "neighbors", but don't belong together. They actually belong to the word before or after them instead. Like this:

"The fireman ran in to get the dog out of the burning house."

"In" in this sentences belongs to ran and "to" belongs to get. In these sentences "in to" mean "in order to". Makes sense? Here's another one:

"The bird flew in to grab his jacket."

Now, for these two examples you could easily switch them up and write "into" instead. Like this:

"The fireman ran into the burning house to rescue the dog."
"The bird flew into the cage to grab his jacket."

Just and for your information...I like the "into" sentences better.

And apparently, there are also lose English (60's colloquialism apparently), that allows "into" to mean "deeply interested or involved in". You would use it the following ways:

"My daughter is heavily into her horses."
"The President is looking into the matter."

According to some grammars, this is not acceptable English, yet its acceptable in "informal communication".

Oddly enough, this has been the topic of conversation among certain friends of mine recently. I admit, I try to never end a sentence with a preposition. But I do have to laugh at myself. Sometimes grammar rules make no sense.

Many English speakers do not know the difference between who and whom. In some places, it hardly

matters, because using who when you should use whom is so common that it's not even considered much

of a mistake. But for those who want to know the difference between who andwhom, here is an

explanation.

To put it simply, “who” is a subject and “whom” is an object. A classic mneumonic device to remember this, courtesy of Grammar Girl, is “I love you.” In this sentence, “I” is the subject – who is performing the action of the sentence. “I” am doing the loving. “You” are the object of my affection, as well as the object of the verb. ”You” are receiving the love. Therefore, I = who, you = whom.

If we turn this into questions, it would be:

Who loves you? (You are asking about the subject.)
Whom do you love? (You are asking about the object of the action.)

When choosing between who and whom, ask yourself: are you talking about the subject of a sentence (who), or the object of the action in the sentence (whom)?

Some examples:

Wonder Woman, who just celebrated her 600th issue, underwent a drastic costume change. (We use “who” because it refers to the subject, Wonder Woman.)

Who is responsible for this new look?

Wonder Woman did not know whom to save first: Superman or Batman. (We use “whom” because it is the object of the verb “know.” Wonder Woman is performing the action and whom is the one receiving the action.)

The Trinity

Last trick to remember the difference: he = who and him = whom. Notice how him and whom both end in m? When trying to choose between who or whom, ask yourself if the answer would be he or him.

If the answer is he (or she), then use who. Who is the only superhero that can rival Wonder Woman’s power?
- He (Superman) is the only superhero who can rival Wonder Woman’s power.
If the answer is him (or her), then use whom. Who fell under Max Payne’s malevolent telepathic control?
- Max Payne seized telepathic control of him (Superman), whom Wonder Woman rescued.

Stationary or Stationery?

Here’s another word pair that is often confusing for people. These words are called homophones–which mean they sound alike (same sound), but have different meanings.

* stationary (with an a) is a verb which means still, not moving, in one place.

* stationery (with an e) is a noun that names the paper used for formal written communication–either personal or business.

For a high-tech way to remember which word to use when, remember that you use email to send digital communication and stationery for hand-written or printed formal communication.

"Ex" or "Former"?

When referring to a person who has completed something, whether it be a job, political office, or marriage/relationship should you use the term “ex-” or “former”?

This is a pet peeve of mine, as I often hear people use “ex” when they should use “former”. Usually, “ex-”, which is a prefix, is used if the person left the position in question under less than stellar conditions. For example, if a politician has been forced to leave office before the end of his or her term because of some shady or illegal dealings, it would be correct to call that person the “ex-mayor” or “ex-congressman”, etc. Usually, the end of a marriage or relationship is not on such good terms, which is why the person is called your “ex-”.

However, if the person’s tenure is just over, then the proper term should be “former”. “Former” just says that the term or condition is over, period. The situation ended because it was supposed to, not because of any negative circumstances.

What is the different between ex and former?

Ex is more final. If you said, "that person is former colleague," it's neutral but "ex-colleague" suggests that you repudiated

them in some way. Maybe a better example, you could say "in my former life" (either in reference to your previous

incarnation or just a different living situation you were in before) but you couldn't say "my ex-life", it doesn't make sense

because you are alive.

Also ex is more restricted grammatically, because it is truly a prefix. You can say "my ex-apartment is near here" or my

former apartment is near here", or you could say formerly, "I lived near here"; but you can't say "Exly, I lived near here", or "I

exly lived here." You'd have to say, "I once lived here".

However, ex also has the meaning of a noun when you speak of your "ex" to mean your ex-spouse or ex-partner. You can't

say "my former" and have people any idea what you mean. But "my ex" has a whole lot of meaning.

Seguem abaixo algumas expressões bastante usadas diariamente pelos americanos. Muitas vezes se tentarmos traduzi-las ao pé da letra o significado não terá muito a ver com o que realmente se queria dizer. Nestas horas é importante pensar no contexto em que estas expressões estão sendo usadas para que elas não nos confundam. Então, da próxima vez que você escutar alguma destas expressões lembre-se destes significados!

24/7 (twenty four/ seven) - quando alguém usa esta expressão quer dizer que algum fato (trabalhar, por exemplo) ocorre várias vezes repetidamente. Ou seja, este acontecimento se repete 24 horas por 7 dias na semana! Obviamente esta expressão serve para dar ênfase como quando dizemos em português "Estou morto de cansaço!" - sabe-se, que você não está literalmente morto. É somente uma forma de dar ênfase ao QUÃO cansado você está. A mesma coisa serve para o 24/7, pois a ideia é a de que o evento se repete tanto que te dá impressão de que é feito todos os dias e durante todas as horas. E.g: I have been working 24/7 lately! I definitely need some rest! (Eu tenho trabalhado DEMAIS ultimamente! Eu definitivamente preciso de um descanso!)
"Get the ball rolling" - esta expressão significa o mesmo que dizer "let's start now" (vamos começar agora!).E.g: We have to study for the math test, so let's get the ball rolling! (Nós precisamos estudar para a prova de matemática, então vamos começar agora!)
"Take it easy" - pode significar "relax", ou seja, relaxar, descansar ou semelhante a nossa expressão em português "ficar de boa".E.g: I don't have any plans this weekend, I think I'll take it easy! (Eu não tenho planos para o final de semana, eu acho que vou descansar!)
"I'm broke" - esta expressão é muito parecida com a que usamos em português "estou quebrado" ou seja, quando estamos sem dinheiro. É uma expressão bastante usada em inglês.E.g: Can you lend me some money, I'm broke this month! (Você poderia me emprestar um pouco de dinheiro, eu estou quebrado este mês!)
"Sleep on it" - quando os americanos usam esta expressão em determinadas situações eles querem dizer que precisam de um certo tempo para pensar sobre alguma decisão importante. E.g: Paul, I'll get back to you tomorrow, I have to sleep on it! (Paul, eu te dou uma resposta amanhã, eu preciso de um tempo para pensar!)
"Sharp" - é o mesmo que dizer em português "em ponto". Ou seja, se você vai a uma reunião de trabalho e o seu chefe disse que a mesma começará às sete horas em ponto, obviamente você deve fazer um grande esforço para não se atrasar, pois a reunião começará exatamente às sete horas. E.g: The meeting is at 7 o'clock sharp!
"Like the back of my hand" - quando os americanos utilizam esta expressão eles querem dizer que algum lugar é muito familiar, ou seja, que eles conhecem muito bem o local assim como se fosse a palma da mão deles. E.g: He knows the city like the back of his hand! (Ele conhece a cidade muito bem!)
"Give me a hand" - significa o mesmo que dizer "help me", ou seja, me dê uma ajuda. E.g: This box is very heavy, would you give me a hand? (Esta caixa é muito pesada, você poderia me dar uma ajuda?)
"in ages" - esta expressão quer dizer o mesmo que "for a long time", ou seja, por muito tempo. E.g: I haven't seen him in ages! (Faz muito tempo que eu não o vejo!)
"Sick and tired" - esta expressão não quer dizer doente e cansado! Lembre-se são EXPRESSÕES e nestes casos não podemos traduzi-las ao pé da letra! "Sick and tired" quer dizer que você não gosta ou odeia alguma coisa. E.g: I'm sick and tired of doing my homework. (Eu não gosto de fazer a minha lição de casa.)

Um dos erros mais comuns de quem começa a estudar inglês é cometido na hora de falar a idade. Esse erro ocorre porque as pessoas têm a tendência de traduzir tudo palavra por palavra e aí acabam cometendo essas pérolas.

Nesse caso a pérola à qual me refiro é a de dizer "eu tenho ... anos" em inglês. Você sabe que isso é realmente assunto de aluno iniciante. Logo, todo mundo que estuda inglês deve saber como dizer a idade do jeito certo e não traduzindo palavrinha por palavrinha. O interessante é que às vezes muitos alunos de nível intermediário e até mesmo avançados costumam cometer esse erro.

Assim, quando querem dizer "eu tenho ... anos" acabam soltando algo como "I have ... years". Se você fala isso na hora de falar a sua idade em inglês, saiba que chegou a hora de parar. Afinal, em inglês não é assim que falamos.

Nessa situação você não diz "I have...". O certo é dizer "I'm..." ou"I am...". Outra coisa interessante a ser notada é que ao dizer "years" a palavra "old" deve ser usada também. Portanto, o certo em inglês é sempre dizer "I'm ... years old". Veja os exemplos:

I'm 30 years old.
I'm 45 years old.
She's 22 years old.
He's 15 years old.

A forma que você viu acima é a que chamamos de forma completa, por assim dizer. Há, no entanto, outras maneiras de dizer a idade. Você pode encurtar a sentença acima e dizer apenas:

I'm 30.
I'm 45.
She's 22.
He's 15.

Essas são as formas mais comuns e corretas para você falar a sua idade ou a de outras pessoas em inglês. Portanto, se você é daqueles que dizem "I have...", meu conselho é que pare de dizer isso hoje mesmo. Anote aí as formas possíveis e certa e pratique-as. assim, você não corre o risco de continuar cometendo esse errinho básico.

Advice vs Advise

As palavras “advise” e “advice” são parecidas e causam confusão na cabeça de muita gente. Alguns sites explicam a diferença entre elas dizendo que “advice” é substantivo e, portanto significa “conselho”. Já “advise” é verbo, logo, significa “aconselhar”.

Isso aí já seria o bastante para entender a diferença entre as duas palavras. No entanto, elas são diferentes na pronúncia também. Perceba essa diferença clicando em cada uma das palavras abaixo:

advise [soa como éd-vaiz]
advice [soa como éd-vais]

Além de aprender a diferença de significado, escrita e pronúncia, vale a pena aprender também as palavras que combinam com elas. Principalmente, as palavras que mais combinam com “advice” (conselho). Essas combinações é o que chamamos de collocations.

E aí aprenda aí que você pode “ask advice” ou “ask for advice” (pedir um conselho) ou pode “give advice” (dar um conselho). Você pode ainda “follow someone’s advice” (seguir o conselho de alguém) ou “listen to someone’s advice” (escutar o conselho de alguém). O contrário é “ignorar o conselho de alguém”, que em inglês será “ignore someone’s advice” ou “reject someone’s advice”.

Um conselho pode ser um “good advice” (bom conselho), “sensible advice” (conselho sensato), “bad advice” (péssimo conselho), “valuable advice” (conselho valioso) e outros tantos. Tem ainda o “legal advice”, que é algo como “orientação jurídica”. Nessa mesma lógica temos o “medical advice” (orientação médica), “financial advice” (orientação financeira), “professional advice” (orientação profissional), etc.

Por fim, anote aí que a palavra “advice” (conselho) em inglês não tem plural. Ou seja, jamais diga “an advice”, “two advices” e por aí adiante. Em inglês o certo é dizer “a piece of advice” (um conselho), “two pieces of advice” (dois conselhos), etc. Ao invés de “piece” você pode também dizer “word” ou “bit”: “a word of advice” ou “a bit of advice”.

Está aí uma expressão muito interessante, bem informal e que é muito utilizada em inglês. Uma equivalência para"I'll call it a day" é"chega por hoje".Depois de um longo dia, de ter trabalhado bastante ou estudado bastante, você pode respirar fundo e dizer: chega por hoje. Ou seja, você vai parar o que está fazendo, e provavelmente voltará às suas atividades amanhã. Mas isso não é utilizado apenas depois do trabalho. Você também pode dizer depois de horas no computador, chega por hoje! Existem várias formas de usar o call it a day, veja estes exemplos:

Let's call it a day / I'm gonna call it a day / It's time to call it a day - todas elas querem dizer a mesma coisa.
I studied math for 6 hours I'll call it a day. Eu estudei matemática por 6 horas, chega por hoje.

Dependendo do contexto, o significado se adapta ao que se está sendo dito, por ser uma gíria, você vai encontrar variações. Por exemplo, o vocalista o R.E.M. disse uma vez: "we have decided to call it a day as a band". Neste caso, "call it a day" é equivalente a "dar uma pausa", "parar", "acabar por aqui".
Porém o sentido é sempre o mesmo, parar de fazer alguma coisa.

Em inglês, a expressão as expressões mais usadas são “and so on” ou “and so forth”. Essas duas podem ainda aparecer juntas: “and so on and so forth”. Nesse caso é como se a pessoa estivesse sendo um pouco mais enfática. Veja abaixo alguns exemplos com essas expressões:

We went to clubs, schools, houses, hospital, and so on.(Nós fomos aos clubes, escolas, casas, hospitais e assim por diante.)
Put things where you will use them: sponges next to the sink, knives next to the cutting board, and so on.(Coloque as coisas onde você irá usá-las: esponjas perto da pia, facas perto da tábua de cortar, e por aí a fora.)
That also includes bullets, weapons and so on. (Isso também inclui balas, armas, e assim por diante.)
Don’t forget to pack weather items appropriate for the climate: sunscreen, suntan lotion, sunshade, and so forth. (Não esqueça de colocar os item adequados para o clima: óculos de sol, bronzeador, guarda sol, e assim por diante.)

Agora é só você ficar de olho. Ou seja, fique atento ao encontrar as expressões “and so on” e “and so forth” para saber como elas são usadas em inglês.

Go back vs Come back

'Qual a diferença entre go back e come back?' é uma pergunta feita muito frequentemente por alunos de inglês. Existem várias formas de se explicar isso. Alguns falam sobre a distância do interlocutor, outros dizem que um significa voltar outro retornar. Em inglês as explicações normalmente são confusas também: Geralmente "you go back" when you return to a place where you started from or came from e "you come back" when you return to the place where you are now.
Na verdade, a confusão aparece porque a equivalência em português para "go back" e "come back" normalmente é a mesma, ou seja, voltar. Vamos analisar os exemplos abaixo:

You must go back there. Você tem que voltar lá. (voltar = ir de volta)
You must come back here. Você tem que voltar aqui. (voltar = vir de volta)

Na verdade, o problema é que no português usamos "voltar"significando "ir de volta" e "vir de volta". Agora no inglês fica assim: quando quisermos dizer "voltar / retornar" no sentido de "ir de volta" usamos "go back". E quando quisermos dizer "voltar / retornar" no sentido de "vir de volta" usamos "come back". Com isso em mente fica fácil de entender as frases abaixo:

Go back to where you came from. Volte (vá de volta) pro lugar que você veio.
It's cold out here. Let's go back inside. Está frio aqui fora. Vamos voltar (ir de volta) pra dentro.
When are you going back to Japan? Quando você vai voltar (ir de volta) para o Japão?
When are you coming back to London? Quando você vai voltar (vir de volta) para Londres?
She left me and I don't think she'll come back. Ela me deixou e não acho que voltará (virá de volta).
My cat always comes back home. Meu gato sempre volta (vem de volta) pra casa.
My cat always goes back to my neighbor's yard. Meu gato sempre volta (vai de volta) pro jardim da minha vizinha.
Please, come back to me! Por favor, volte (venha de volta) pra mim!
Please, go back to her! Por favor, volte (vá de volta) pra ela!
My dentist says I have to go back again next week.Meu dentista disse que eu tenho que voltar (ir de volta) novamente a semana que vem.
Come back here right now! Volte (venha de volta) aqui agora mesmo!

Você sabe o que significa"over and over"? Se analisarmos a palavra "over" ela pode significar em português "sobre", "através" ou"encerrado".
Mas neste caso, vamos imaginar que"over and over" é uma palavra só, e ela significa "repetidamente". Ou seja, usamos "over and over" para definir uma coisa que acontece repetidamente ou toda hora. Quer ver um exemplo?
