Maintaining organization is essential for me to stay on top of everything. If I don't diligently create lists and schedule events on my digital calendars, I find myself quickly overwhelmed and falling behind. It's almost comical how quickly my life can descend into chaos without these crucial tools. From remembering appointments and deadlines to keeping track of daily tasks and errands, my lists and calendars serve as my lifeline to maintaining order and ensuring that nothing slips through the cracks. The more difficult tasks, depending on my schedule, are finding time to make art, prepare meals and do dishes, lol.

Setting up the Window for the Wood on Glass Exhibit & Talk

Being in my father's workshop has always been a joyful experience for me. The sights, sounds, and smells of wood shavings, sawdust, and freshly cut lumber transport me to a place of peace and contentment. Listening to him talk about the history of each tool, their origins, and how they've been used throughout the generations, is like hearing a captivating story unfold. I've learned so much from him about woodworking techniques, joinery, and the characteristics of different types of wood.

Watching him work is mesmerizing. The way he skillfully wields each tool, whether it's a hand plane, a chisel, or a saw, is a testament to his years of experience and dedication to his craft. His hands move with precision and purpose, shaping raw wood into beautiful and functional pieces. I'm always amazed by how he can transform rough lumber into finely crafted furniture, intricate cabinets, delicately turned bowls, and even simple wooden spoons. Each piece he creates is a testament to his skill, patience, and artistic vision.

But it's not just about the woodworking itself. It's about the time spent with my father, the shared passion for creating something with our hands, and the lessons I've learned along the way. He's taught me the value of hard work, the importance of attention to detail, and the satisfaction of creating something that will last for generations.

Being in his workshop has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the art of woodworking and a love for working with my hands. It's a place where creativity flourishes, skills are honed, and memories are made. And for that, I will always be grateful.

Reaching out to him with a request for hand tools from the late 19th century, the kind that would likely have been found at a lumber camp, was an obvious and easy decision. The aim was to enhance the exhibit with tangible artifacts that visitors could interact with, providing a deeper understanding of the historical context. He was enthusiastic about supporting the project and readily agreed to lend the tools, recognizing the value they would add to the display.

The Pennsylvania Wilds continue to be blanketed in a pristine layer of snow. Just a few days ago the rain almost melted the snow that remained. The forecast suggests the possibility of even icier conditions in the near future, but in our home, an atmosphere of warmth and coziness prevails.

The allure of the snow-covered landscape is proving irresistible, drawing me outdoors for a tranquil walk amidst the falling snow. The thought of the crisp air, crunch of snow beneath my boots, and the blanketed silence is calling. I NEED to get outside <3

Flatlay Friday--- Happy Valentine's Day

Little treasures from life throughout the decades that we are drawn to stay and stay. It's Flatlay Friday, and love is in the air, but we're not talking about the picture-perfect, hearts-and-flowers kind. No, this is about the real, raw, and sometimes rugged side of love.

Spread out before me are a few worn and weathered objects that speak volumes about this enduring emotion. Antique brass stencils, their once-bright surfaces now dulled and tarnished, spell out the word "ART." These aren't shiny new trinkets; they've been passed down through generations, each nick and scratch whispering stories of loves lost and found. They're a testament to the fact that love isn't always pretty, but it's resilient.

Next to the stencils sits my great Aunt Wilda's perpetual desk calendar, its edges frayed and its numbers faded. This calendar has seen more life than most of us, and it's still ticking, a reminder that love endures, even when the world throws its worst at you.

These aren't just objects; they're pieces of my heart. Each one has a story, a memory, a reminder of where I've been and who I've loved. They keep me grounded, reminding me what truly matters in this crazy world.

Admittedly when Alton Brown came on my radar in 1999 I was intrigued and appreciative of his mad cooking skills but, once the Alton Browncast podcast busted through my world, yep, I was crushing.

The podcasts are very entertaining hitting on pop-culture, retro coolness, film history, an insiders view of food TV but, during all this there is a circling back to some aspect of food culture/experience.
His latest book Alton Brown Everyday Cook is pretty spectacular. Here is a recent podcast chatting about the process with his photographer Sarah De Heer who used an iPhone 6s Plus in a directly overhead shooting style on every shot.

Another recent purchase is The Homemade Vegan Pantry, more about that at another time ;)

So much of this technique is all about composing the shot.

Lovely bit of fan fun playing around with Matt Smith's 11th regeneration of Doctor Who. The Doctor was feeling a bit peckish but, finally found what he was craving, Fish Sticks and Custard. Mr. Brown gives this a thumbs up for flavor with this version of the dish.

If anything listen to the podcasts and if this is your first experience with podcasts, what a way to be introduced! Owning Android operating systems in the past Stitcher Radio was my go to app but, now with migrating over to Apple and a 6s iTunes is taking a little getting used to but, very user friendly.

Tool Tuesday: My Trusty Potter USA Hydraulic Press

Happy Tool Tuesday, everyone! Today I want to sing the praises of one of my most valuable tools: my Potter USA Hydraulic Press. This workhorse has been a game-changer in my studio, and I honestly don't know what I'd do without it.

I invested in this glorious piece of machinery back in December 2014, and then added the 20 ton electric press upgrade the following year. It was purchased with a very specific purpose in mind: to help me punch out blanks in all shapes and sizes, as well as form bracelets/rings and add texture. Let me tell you, it has more than delivered on that promise with helping to limit wear and tear on my body!

This hydraulic press has been an absolute lifesaver, paying for itself over and over again. It's been especially crucial for fulfilling wholesale orders that contain hundreds of pieces and components from small blanks to bracelets. The sheer volume of work I can now handle is incredible. Frankly, I couldn't physically do what I do today if I hadn't taken the plunge and made this investment. It's truly allowed me to scale my business in a way that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

My to-do lists have been completely overwhelmed with Heritage-Education & Welcome Center tasks and responsibilities lately, and it's been incredibly challenging to carve out time for my own personal and professional pursuits. I'm actively working to change that and reprioritize my time. I'm eager to dedicate significantly more time to creative endeavors in my studio and reduce my volunteer hours at the HEWC. However, it's a constant struggle to make that shift a reality – the HEWC always has urgent needs, and stepping back to focus on my own projects feels almost impossible since I also LOVE what I do with the HEWC <3

Grateful Sunday-- the makers in our lives

The presence of creative individuals in one's life is an invaluable gift, and I am profoundly grateful for my father and his artistic talents. This Christmas, he crafted exquisite Japanese-style pencil boxes for both me and our youngest daughter, Tameryn.

My box is now filled with an assortment of desktop essentials, each item carefully chosen and appreciated: sweet chubby brass scissors, a reliable Blackwing pencil sharpener, a gum eraser for clean corrections, a 6-inch wooden antique ruler with a sense of history, binder clips to hold open a journal/tablet, and a selection of pencils ready for quick or detailed sketch. Every time I open this box, I am reminded of my father's thoughtfulness and the joy of having such a unique and personal item.

Vibe Saturday and Community Heart & Soul Meet-up Last Week at the Heritage-Education & Welcome Center

The Johnsonburg Community Trust's new headquarters is in the recently completed Heritage-Education & Welcome Center! Nestled in the historic Brick Block at the intersection of Bridge and Market Streets, this expansive 45,000 sq ft facility serves as a dynamic hub for a multitude of purposes.

Primarily, the center houses the Trust's offices and operations, providing a centralized location for the organization's activities. Additionally, the space functions as an incubator site for non-profit organizations, offering support and resources to help them grow and thrive. Recognizing the importance of tourism, the center also includes a welcome center to greet and assist visitors to the area. Furthermore, a retail shop showcasing regional products is on site, providing a platform for local businesses and artisans to display and sell their goods.

The Heritage-Education & Welcome Center is not only a space for commerce and support; it's also a celebration of Johnsonburg's rich history and culture. The center features captivating historical displays that chronicle the town's past, and hosts a variety of educational activities designed to engage and enlighten visitors of all ages.

To further promote and preserve Johnsonburg's heritage, the center hosts a series of heritage-themed markets, festivals, and displays. These events showcase the region's diverse visual arts, traditional crafts, and local cuisine. Educational activities and live performances are also featured, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching experience for all attendees. These events aim to entertain and educate the community while fostering a deeper appreciation for Johnsonburg's historical and living cultural heritage. Both the interior and exterior spaces of the center will be and are utilized to host these vibrant and engaging events and activities, ensuring maximum accessibility and community participation.

Last Tuesday, the Center was proud to host the 3rd meet-up of the Community Heart & Soul initiative, bringing together passionate participants from both boroughs, coordinator Emma, and a wonderfully experienced coach, Alice. This collaborative process embodies the core mission of the Trust, as it provides a platform for community members to actively engage in shaping the future of their region.

The atmosphere was abuzz with energy and enthusiasm as attendees gathered around the center's tables, sharing ideas and envisioning the myriad possibilities that lie ahead for this remarkable area. The discussions were rich and diverse, reflecting the unique perspectives and aspirations of the participants. The meet-up served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community engagement and the transformative potential of collective action.

A great gathering of participants all came together for the 3rd meet-up on February 4th in the HEWC, 569 Market Street, Johnsonburg for CH&S!

The attendees actively participated in a brainstorming session, sharing a wide range of ideas and suggestions. Coach Alice L. Trowbridge expertly facilitated the discussion, carefully noting and organizing the contributions for future action and reference.

We are in the Getting Started phase which is designed to give you the opportunity to explore the Heart & Soul journey and identify potential areas of support and challenge as you embark on this process. This initial phase will help you lay the groundwork for a successful experience as you move forward. Phase 1 of the program is expected to commence either in late March or early April, allowing for adequate preparation and exploration during the Getting Started phase.

Coming together over pizza, connections and community

Our next meeting will be February 25, 2025 from 4:30 – 6:00pm at the Ridgway Senior Junction, 321 West Main Street, Ridgway. At this next gathering we will be brainstorming what resources will be needed for CH&S (both human and financial resources)

As the sun sets and a winter weather advisory settles in, it's time to retreat to the warmth and comfort of home. The inviting aroma of roasted sweet potatoes, pan-fried pork chops, and a crisp green salad is the perfect way to spend this winter night.

Right before the snow started my husband and I stopped at the HEWC to drop off a package and grab the mail. Jessica from Kay & Rose Bakery Co. next door, invited me in to take a look at the delicious spread her and her staff had prepared for the dance attendees as they stopped in. They were calling it "Snowball Sweets," and it was quite a sight! There were charcuterie offerings cookies, pastries and a chocolate fountain - all sorts of treats decorated in a wintery theme. It all looked so tempting, and I'm sure it was a hit with the students tonight.

Take this opportunity to enjoy the simple pleasures of the season, whether it's curling up with a good book, sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace, or spending quality time with loved ones. Let's cherish these winter days and the joy they bring. Stay cozy, everyone! I am off to finish preparing supper.

Today's Friday flatlay is of my currently inked fountain pens.

Have you ever treated yourself to something special for your birthday? For quite a while now, I've had my eye on a fountain pen Coozy from Rickshaw Bagworks. My pen collection has grown considerably, and so have my needs – from professional meetings to personal journaling, I've realized I need a better way to organize and transport my pens.

The Coozy case seemed like the perfect solution. It has space for a 3-pen sleeve, a 2-pen sleeve, and a single pen sleeve – all made from a super soft material that will protect my pens. Throwback Thursday- Home-made Ketchup

Making something tasty does not have to be an ordeal. Being able to throw a few ingredients together, we already have on hand, for America's 2nd most popular condiment with mayonnaise ranking one and soy sauce coming in 3rd---- is pretty terrific.

Wee piles of spices, starting at the top: cloves, allspice, cinnamon, cayenne and dry mustard. Yellow dried dates are a good source of calcium, vitamin C and fiber with also adding a deep almost caramel note to your recipe.

Using the Vitamix is perfect for pulverizing dried yellow dates, if you don't have a good blender omit the dates.

This recipe can be a base for other variations such as a jalapeno ketchup, mango ketchup with thyme, Chipotle ketchup, Masala ketchup, sun-dried tomato ketchup with basil and also Molasses, of course....wait for it- KETCHUP.
Dried herbs, different mustard, sugars, vinegar, dried fruits such as raisins or figs thrown in to mix it up or to treat it as a specific meat accompaniment for pork, beef and chicken.

February 5th, the Birthday Day

Turning 59? No biggie. I'm almost 60, and I'm not ashamed to say it! Time flies, and while I'm cool with getting older, I'm kind of obsessed with living long enough to do everything I want.

Honestly, the thought of leaving my husband, daughters, granddaughters, family, and friends is heavy. Time just vanishes – where does it go? I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Not to mention all of the unfinished projects waiting for me to pick them up again and give them new life. Each one is a creative spark, an idea I want to finish. And there's always a growing list of new techniques and styles I'm eager to try. The creative world is always changing, and I don't want to miss out.

The real fear isn't getting older; it's leaving this world with unfinished projects and unexplored ideas. It's about not having enough time to reach my full creative potential and not enough time to have with my family & friends..

One brand that's caught my eye is Jinhao. They're known for their "knock-off" designs, but they're surprisingly good for the price. The writing experience is smooth, and the pen feels great in my hand, just like more expensive models.

The best thing about these affordable pens is how versatile they are. I can throw them in my bag, carry them in a pocket, and take them anywhere without worrying about pens getting damaged or lost. This means I can write whenever I want, whether it's taking notes at a restaurant, sketching at the Farmers' & Artisans' Market, or just enjoying putting pen to paper.

So, while those luxury pens are still tempting, I have a growing appreciation for the unsung heroes of the pen world – the affordable, dependable pens that make writing accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

My birthday gift to myself is this Fountain Pen Coozy Bundle from Rickshaw Bagworks! It has proven to be an incredibly practical, stylish addition to my workspace and for taking out/about. This Coozy currently houses 18 of my frequently used pens, keeping them organized and easily accessible. While I wouldn't necessarily carry it around with so many pens inside, it's perfect for keeping my desk cleared when needed and my current inked up pens in reach. Overall, I really am loving this solution and recommend Rickshaw Bagworks highly.

February. The very word conjures images of snow-dusted landscapes, cozy nights, and… well, maybe a little bit of cabin fever. But even though Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted six more weeks of winter, I can't help but feel a shift in the air. The days are undeniably getting longer, a subtle promise of spring just around the corner. Don't you feel it too? That sense of anticipation, of new beginnings? The February birthday/anniversary month blog challenge that I have been setting myself up with each year is my favorite way to jump-start creatively

This past year has been a whirlwind of change for me, a period of growth and transformation that has kept me largely away from this space. So much has happened since my last blog post, and I'm excited to start sharing some of it with you all. (More on that to come in future posts!) The BIG studio organizing flurry before Christmas has been a huge motivator, to be honest.

This blog has always been a place for me to connect and to share thoughts and experiences. I'm excited to share what I've been learning, the challenges I've faced, and the joys I've discovered.

So, here's to longer days, new beginnings, and the feeling that brighter times are ahead. What about you? What are you looking forward to this spring?

Happy Groundhog Day!

That much loved furry rodent, Punxsutawney Phil, has seen his shadow giving us here in North Central Region of Pennsylvania 6 more weeks of winter. Winter has been freezing cold with lots of snow, at least more than a typical winter. Each day the cold allows me to comfortably layer up in sometimes four layers that includes a combination of t-shirts, turtlenecks, button ups, sweaters, skirts, leggings, tights and scarves. So much fun playing around with a different combination every single day.

Lagenlook- is a German fashion trend that involves layering multiple pieces of clothing to create a unique look. The term translates to "layering look" in English.

The plan was to get breakfast this Sunday morning and then head home to finish the laminate on our bedroom floor. The omelet was loaded with feta, roasted red peppers and spinach. It was delicious!

It is now 6:30 that same night and the laminate floor is down, now to get all of the furniture back in place. Tomorrow is the start of organizing, tossing and donating to Goodwill trying to make sense of our small bedroom. My dream is to have a simple, clean and organized space with a boho/cottagecore/retro vibe. The room is only 12x10 and has always been very difficult to keep need and tidy. What is a girl to do when she is a collector of everything.

I imagine Phil is in his borrow thinking about how he is torturing all of us with his predictions. Good night sweet Phil <3

Birthday and Blog Anniversary Month all Rolled into One Month Long Blogging Challenge

Traditionally I have been posting every day in February the last few years, because it is my birthday month, and also it is when I posted my first blog back in February, 2005. I can't believe a year has gone by already.

One of the blog posts from 2 years ago I interviewed myself. This year will continue in the same manner as 2024 with the addition of a few recent photos from my studio, December 2024.

"Every single experience or skill learned finds its way into my everyday life. Mending clothes in a fun way, making cards for special occasions (or not), stamping plant names on garden stakes, taking photos with new eyes, collecting special specific items while antiquing, the way I organize, decorating our home, traveling to the next festival, studio or gallery, etc. etc."

This is a deep dive into my maker timeline. What a crazy trip through Flickr , Google albums and old pc photos to create this post! On Flickr, if you are interested, I updated my studio move and how it progressed from start to finish.

Tell us a little about yourself. i.e. location, inspiration, mediums, tools, etc.
Self taught artisan coming from PA Wilds Roots with Rural Organic style. Located in a home studio I focus on ‘made by these hands’ designs. It is very important for me to be the one making/touching each piece. Fiber, clay, metal, vintage components, buttons, Czech beads and semi-precious stones are some of the materials that I use. A collection of antique/new hand tools, rolling mills, torch, vibrating tumbler, hydraulic press, bench shear, anvil, metal letter & design stamps and a bench lathe are some of the tools used in the process of jewelry making.
I also love working as a fiber artisan. Working in fiber has been a big part of being creative for me since elementary school starting off with knitting and weaving potholders to later in life embroidery on art dolls, brooches and pendants.
When I started making ArtDolls, in the early 2000s, it was important for me to make as many of the doll’s components as possible in the studio including an original designed/made doll body and face cabochon. Baked clay became an essential material when creating faces for the improvisational bead embroidery ArtDolls. A faux quartz face cab is my absolute favorite. Baked clay beads, buttons, components and focals came later and still continue.
Mixed media is also an art form that makes its way into my daily life. Journaling, lettering, collaging, sketching, painting and stamping are a release for me. I can create freely and not worry about making money from any part of the creations.
I recently found an online term for working in many mediums, omnicrafter. This term fits the umbrella of Stephanie Distler Studios (SDS) beautifully allowing for all of my passions to bud and flower under the umbrella of SDS. An artisan who is drawn to many mediums/techniques, all at the same time, is an omnicrafter or why not an omniartisan. Stephanie Distler Studios, home of an omni-artisan, lol. Hoot, hoot! Love it <3

What part of the process don't you ever get tired of?

I never get tired of watching sheet metal and wire transform from that simple state into a piece of jewelry, home decor or utilitarian piece.

What type of movies, shows, music or podcasts inspires or keeps you motivated while creating?

You can find me watching YouTube videos on studio tours, artisan jewelry, fiber art, social media or history related videos all day while working. Whatever I am obsessed with at the time will be playing even if it is just adding to the background. Podcasts are also played and in a lot of instances easier to concentrate on, staying focused while working, since they are auditory.

Does your knowledge of working with metal, fiber, tools, lettering or sketching help you in other areas of your life?

How has your style changed over the years?
I started simply in the early 90s stringing semi-precious and glass beads teaching myself design, use of color/texture and developing confidence. Late 90s early 2000s bead embroidery on ArtDolls, brooches and pendants was my main focus filling in at fine art shows with strung necklaces/bracelets, simple wire work and wire wrapping.
After opening the Flemish House Art Gallery, August 2006, in a historic building downtown, metal stamping, cold connections and fibula pins along with soft sculptures, pin cushions and doll forms were sold alongside featured artisans and artists.

Closing up the gallery in 2012 was a way to begin concentrating on my work.
Branding my small business as Stephanie Distler Artisan Jewelry (SDAJ) was a good way to start. Working full time out of an 11’x11’ garden studio, then moving into a larger space that allowed for heavier equipment in mid 2016 off of our home. This was the same year SDAJ started wholesaling to The PA Wilds Conservation Shops and also started merchandising the PA Wilds brand on artisan products.

End of 2021 was the beginning of when I saw a definite shift in how the creative process was intertwining with my practiced artisanal knowledge. My first love is working with metal but I need to bring in everything else too. Stephanie Distler Studios made more sense as a brand with SDAJ falling under that umbrella giving me so much more freedom while designing.

In 2022 the major shift then happened with re-branding, opening up more of my home studio, taking out the seating area, which then gave me double the space to work and have classes. Purchased tools to help with wholesale orders and recycling precious metal through the PA Council on the Arts and their Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator Program.
For 2023 I plan on picking up another couple wholesale accounts with like minded small business entrepreneurs and to continue making #madebythesehands design.

When is your favorite time of day to create?
The morning or early afternoon is when my energy level is up and I can focus on creating. If the sun is shining and the air is warm I open up both doors and let the cross breeze drift through my bright beautiful space.
What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?
Working from a home studio for me is very difficult because it is hard to keep a daily schedule and focus on the work.

Can you give us a look into your daily life schedule?
Up around 7:00, check the weather/medication/social media/email, fight with the dog, water plants, throw on my studio apron, set-up a project or two on the bench, coffee, feed the dog/pill her, send husband off to work, add or take away from my list of to-dos which includes duties as president to a heritage focused 501c3, set up something for social media from the studio, breakfast, work on orders/projects for a few hours, dog pills, start supper, greet the husband, more in the studio, snuggle in on the couch, movie, dog pills, wait an hour to let the dog out one last time and get ready for bed. A few meetings during the week, errands, visits, etc. can be in this daily mix also.

What are you looking forward to currently? Perhaps you are looking forward to an online or in person class, a show, completing a piece, a new teaching opportunity, travel, vacation or remodel?
Currently I am looking forward to making clay birds, leaves and mushroom beads for nature based designs, spring wholesale orders, warmer weather, spending time with family/friends, planting the garden, setting up our porch to spend time on, swinging in the hammock, hiking, grilling, camping and so much more.

How do you promote your business? i.e. newsletters, business cards, shows, video, classes, memberships, online groups, etc. Business cards are a big part of how I reach people along with an occasional newsletter (the goal is to publish more often), art shows/pop-ups or online groups.
I feel that reels, stories, and videos, on social media platforms, are a way for potential customers to walk through my virtual front door and experience Stephanie Distler Studios since there is no brick and mortar location. Creatives can swing open that great big beautiful front door in so many ways through welcoming online visuals. #whatisinyourtoolbox

Favorite social media or new experiments in social media?
Lately I have been experimenting with reels and stories on Instagram. I want to really dive into Pinterest on all fours. I don’t feel like it is a platform that my mind is wrapped around as of yet. Making newsletters a bi-weekly endeavor would make me very happy too.

Do you set boundaries for yourself as an artist/artisan during the day or week?
I keep trying to set boundaries and work certain hours consistently or on certain days but it is difficult to follow through. Working from home is always interesting.

Two daughters graduating college, birthdays, wholesale orders, JCT build out of Heritage Education Center, etc.

Do your other interests influence your art?
The other interests that influence my art are tending to my crazy collection of houseplants, love of the natural world, interest in history/heritage, learning new skills everyday, journaling and drawing what I see.

Saturdays have consisted of working in the studio, orders, experimenting with leathercraft for upcoming orders and nonprofit work, Working in the upcoming HEC or typing away on JCT nonprofit work, Saturday's are busy.

February is when the wholesale orders start coming in to SDS. Cuffs, pendants, charms and branded key fobs are part of the upcoming orders. Now waiting on another order of 16 gauge copper sheet. Copper has more than doubled in price.

I have fallen in love with leather tooling and, of course, the tools, lol.

So much going on at the Heritage Education and Welcome Center. We are so close to open those doors!

These warm days are amazing! Will they last? I sure hope so :) The days are getting longer which is glorious. Once Spring arrives I am going to make a gallant effort, once again, to take it all in and not be taken by surprise when the trees are leafed out. This happens every year, lol, always too much to do.

February is National Embroidery Month. This month recognizes the talented stitchers who turn needle and thread into an art form. Through the years I have gone back to embroidery time and again because I enjoy it so much. Watching those stitches, textiles and beads come together is a magical thing.

While driving today I was listening to a podcast on the history of bagels on Deep Dish With Sohla and Ham: Bagels. Eating a traditionally prepared bagel would be a fabulous thing <3

SIMPLE RECIPES- NO KNEAD BREAD

For anyone that follows me on Instagram or Facebook photos of bread have been prominent in my feeds and wall for this beautiful crusty bread.

When my oldest daughter tried out a no knead bread recipe, I immediately started a searching out what this fab sounding bread was all about online.
The first hit of course led me to the Mark Bittman video with Jim Lahey from Sullivan Street Bakery demonstrating his wonderfully easy process for baking no knead bread.

We regularly bought Wegman's Garlic Tuscan Bread with it's delicious flavor and crust along with it being such a substantial heavy loaf it was a favorite for us.
Well let me tell ya :) after the first loaf came out of the oven no other loaf was going to satisfy.
I have made of course the white along with wheat, oatmeal, rosemary/garlic, just garlic, rye and seed breads.

It is so incredibly easy and this is the way I will write out the recipe for you. (the dough you are looking at was double the recipe on card below, so 6 cups flour was used)

4 ingredients

simply covered to let rise for 12+ hours, here the rising takes place under a small fluorescent for added warmth during cooler weather all night long.

After 14 hours I have a beautiful gooey bowl of stringy dough. At this stage treat it carefully while scraping onto the board as not to destroy the long stringy pockets of air now developed after all those hours.

After the dough was cut in half with scraper, each piece was folded a few times to form balls for putting in the prepared baskets.

We are eating the bread with German Bologna spread and Cheesy Broccoli soup tonight. Youngest daughter is going vegetarian and won't be liking the sandwich part.... The vegetarian journey of Tameryn will be another post at some point, lol.

Tool Tuesday-- Leather Round Head Knife

My Dad called this morning asking to see if I was going to be around so that he could visit. When your dad wants to visit you say yes, of course <3 He also was bringing eggs. As I was putting the eggs in the fridge, I caught a glance of what looked definitely like a knife on top of the cartons! A round head knife for cutting leather that he created for my little leathercraft obsession to be exact <3

We sat and played around with seeing what it could do for a bit, talked about a stitching pony or horse and then I needed to drive to a doctor's appointment. This knife will make quick work of upcoming projects. My dad did such a beautiful job. I love the spalted hickory handle and my dad's signature brass that he puts on so many of his tool restorations.

Gratitude Sunday-- Creatives

I am thankful to have creative people in my life from family to friends we all uplift and support one another. We are a fragile lot. Recently my dad and I visited Eric of Von Dettum & Company , St, Marys, Pa.

His brother Andrew owns the building where Eric lives now and has his studio. This photo and the one below are of the 2nd floor of this glorious old historic structure, The Arcade Hotel, built early 1900.

This hallway is glorious. That beautifully ornate metalwork also, can be found on the first floor in Andrew's business, Tablespoon's Cafe & Deli.

It was the perfect day. Visiting cousins, lunch and visiting with a new creative friend.

I have often, over the years, compared my stamp work on copper to leatherwork.

My grandmother's brother was a leather artisan. Collecting leather tools through the years, I always thought that I would add leather and leather tooling to artisan jewelry designs at some point. So, here is some practice work in scrap veg tan and my first attempts with tooling, freestyle, no pattern/tracing.

The sunflower was tooled in after playing with the swivel knife underneath because I started cutting leaves and just kept going with tooling a sunflower.

These were done in-between working on non profit work for the Johnsonburg Community Trust.

It is that time of year when wholesale orders start making their way to the studio. The process of ordering materials along with popping out charms, pendants, cuffs and earrings begins.

starting to cut blanks for charms, cuffs and pendants

artisan made tool steel stamps with Mandala designs to create a pattern on these pendants freehand

This morning the volunteers, including myself, worked at the Heritage-Education and Welcome Center getting it ready, for my husband, to install the gridwork, ceiling and floor tile over the weekend.
