News In Chennai:Local Body Election in october

Chennai, Sep 9 : The Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) today announced their decisions to go it alone in the local body elections, scheduled for next month.
While the PMK’s decision was on the expected lines as it had already made its stand clear on the alliance issue, the decision taken by the MDMK, not to align with the AIADMK, has come as a surprise. The MDMK, which had been in alliance with the AIADMK, but could not continue the alliance for the recently concluded Assembly elections after problems in seat sharing, was expected to return to the AIADMK fold to fight the Local Body elections.
However, Party General Secretary Vaiko, talking to newspersons in Kumbakonam, ruled out alliance with the AIADMK and announced that the party would go it alone in the Local body elections. He said the MDMK has congratulated Chief Minister J Jayalailthaa for adopting a resolution in the state assembly for the commutation of the death sentence of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case, but that had nothing to do with the alliance.
Mr Vaiko said the MDMK would not contest the October 13 bye-elections to Tiruchirapalli (west) and would not offer support to any party. The MDMK had boycotted the April Assembly elections, after it could not clinch a seat sharing deal with the AIADMK. PMK founder leader Dr S Ramadoss, talking to newsperons here, said the party too would not contest the Tiruchirapalli (west) bye-election. After walking out from the DMK led alliance soon after the Assembly elections, the party had announced that it would not have any tie up with either with the ruling AIADMK or with the DMK.
Dr Ramadoss had said that the party had all these years helped the DMK and the AIADMK to come to power and henceforth would provide an alternative to the two parties in the state. Having decided that the party would not have any tie up with the Dravidian parties, the question of forging ties with the MDMK also does not arise as the party carried the tag, “Dravidian”, Dr Ramadoss said. He, however, said the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) could join the PMK led allinace for the local body poll.
Dr Ramadoss replied in the negative when asked whether the party was approached by any party for alliance. The VCK, which is in the DMK led alliance, would take a final decision on September 17, whether it should continue with the DMK or walk out from the alliance to join hands with the PMK. The VCK has also taken a decision not to contest the Tiruchy bypoll.
