type="html">[5] Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand; [6] Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words. [7] And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. [8] Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. [9] For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Nehemiah 6:5-9

The letters did not stop after number four. Sanballat sent one more, to try and “break him”. This letter was different from the rest, it was “an open letter”. It was not folded to keep the contents secret, but open so anyone could read and possibly put fear in the readers.

Letter number five was full of accusing remarks. “It’s been reported among the neighboring nations that the Jews are going to rebel and make you, Nehemiah, the king. This is the reason for building up the walls. You have also appointed prophets to preach at Jerusalem, saying there is a king in Judah. You need to be careful for it will get back to the king. Come and meet with me to discuss this.”

Nehemiah was not going to take these accusations lying down. He immediately answered, “No such thing is happening here, you are making up lies.”

All of this was done to make Nehemiah and the Jews afraid. If the enemy can tear them down with words and accusations, the work will stop. Strength to endure was badly needed.

As was his custom Nehemiah prayed, “O God strengthen my hands.”

What do you do when the enemy comes along with discouraging words? Do you fret and moan and groan? Do you turn to the One who can help?

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. Psalm 42:5

Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. Psalm 33:20

Oh Lord, help us to be like Nehemiah. Give us strength to endure the evil one. We thank you for the promise that you will never leave or forsake us.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Fear tactics

[1] Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;) [2] That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. [3] And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? [4] Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. Nehemiah 6:1-4

The enemies are at it again. The “old gang” is back, Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem, they heard the news that the wall was built and it was strong and sturdy. As usual they had plans for Nehemiah’s demise. A letter was sent to set up a meeting with Nehemiah. Nehemiah was not born yesterday, and realized they only wanted to meet with him for mischief. The Hebrew meaning for mischief includes: bad, affliction, calamity, distress.

Nehemiah’s answer to them is exactly what one would expect, “Oh no, I cannot go to Ono! I am doing a great work.” My translation is “I have way more important works to do than meet with the likes of you.” As with all the followers of the evil one, they were very persistent. They would hassle and pester until he relented. They obviously did not know Nehemiah’s fortitude.

The barraging continued, three more letters followed, with the same results. Nehemiah was not budging. He knew what he was called to do and he was going to do it. No temptation was going to pull him from the work of the wall.

~ Are you being tempted by others who do not know the great works of God? Is someone trying to break down your beliefs? Do you feel pulled in a hundred directions?

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Ephesians 4:14

~ Take a lesson from Nehemiah, do not waver.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Ephesians 6:10

~ Go in prayer to the One who will help you with all your problems.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [16] Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work. [17] Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us. [18] Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. [19] Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people. Nehemiah 5:14-19

Nehemiah was a man of integrity. He did not ask of others something he himself would not do. In this portion of scripture we learn that Nehemiah was made governor.

He was a governor like none before him. He did not live at the expense of the people. Nehemiah did not take a pay or food from the people. So, what did Nehemiah do while he was the governor? He worked on the wall. He had a mission to do and he would complete it.

Nehemiah worked and took care of his servants as well as a hundred and fifty Jews and rulers. He made sure the people were fed. His daily provision for them: one ox, six sheep, different birds and every ten days they had special wines. All of this was paid for by Nehemiah, not the government, so the people would not be burdened.

At the close of the chapter is what I consider a one line prayer, “think upon me, my God, for good...” Nehemiah was not looking toward men for his reward but toward his Heavenly Father.

Lesson: Do everything you do for the Lord.

Do we live by example? Do our actions match our words?

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1Corinthians 10:31

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Colossians 3:23

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Promises made and kept

[6] And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.[7] Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them. [8] And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer. [9] Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? [10] I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury. [11] Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. [12] Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise. [13] Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise. Nehemiah 5:6-13

Nehemiah listened as the Jews told him what was happening with their fellow countrymen. Nehemiah was angry and rebuked the rulers. What they were doing was out right extortion. When the rebuking was over the nobles and rulers had no answer. I’m sure they knew they were wrong. John Gill says, “being convinced they had done wrong, by the arguments used, to which they could make no reply.”

Nehemiah took the silent to move ahead with his discourse. You need to “walk in the fear of God”, stop the taxing and restore what you took. The people agreed and Nehemiah made them take an oath and promise to do what they said.

Keil & Delitzsch Commentary: “To make the agreement thus sworn to still more binding, Nehemiah confirmed the proceeding by a symbolical action: Also I shook my lap, and said, So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth (fulfilleth) not this promise, and thus may he be shaken out and emptied. ... The symbolical action consisted in Nehemiah's gathering up his garment as if for the purpose of carrying something, and then shaking it out with the words above stated, which declared the meaning of the act.”

The whole congregation approved with a hearty Amen (so be it). The people praised God and did what they promised.

What would you do if every time you made a promise before God someone was there to make you take an oath to keep the promise? We need to be careful of what we say and what we promise. God takes promises seriously.

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. [2] For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live. [3] Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth. [4] There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards. [5] Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards. Nehemiah 5:1-5

The people are working hard at trying to complete the task of finishing the wall. They have had opposition from people “outside the camp” now they have opposition from other Jews. It appears that the rich were taking advantage of the poor.

I’m picturing this time as a recession. The prices are going higher and higher yet the wages are staying the same. People had large families and were having a hard time supporting their families. They had to mortgage their homes and lands just to buy food. Borrowing money to pay taxes was also making them miserable. They felt absolutely powerless.

It was getting so bad the Jews were selling their sons and daughters to be slaves. They had no way to redeem their children because other men now owned their lands. A dilemma no one would want to be in.

As I read the verses, I heard despair, hopelessness and the wavering faith of the people. They felt like they had nowhere to turn. I’m sure it felt like the “world” was crushing in on them, losing land, homes and even children.

In my next post, Nehemiah will speak to this problem.

Maybe you know someone who is having a hard time during the recession. It could be a lost job or a cut in pay to keep the job. I spoke to someone recently whose husband has taken three cuts in pay during the last few years. We need to pray and ask God to show us where we can help others.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Colossians 3:12

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Determination

[16] And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. [17] They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. [18] For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me. [19] And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. [20] In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us. [21] So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. [22] Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day. [23] So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing. Nehemiah 4:17-23

Talk about determination, Nehemiah is unwavering in his goal to see the wall built. He will do whatever it takes to see it accomplished.

The Bible says “from that time on…” half of the people worked on the wall and the other half ready for battle. The workers were in unity as one great working machine. One hand was working on the wall as they held a weapon in the other. They were prepared for whatever happened, if the enemy left them alone they were working, if the enemy came and disturbed them they were ready.

The wall was very large and the people were separated throughout the long span. Nehemiah spoke to the people and told them to be ready. When the trumpet is heard you know the battle is coming, gather together but don’t worry because God will fight for us. He had stamina, knowledge, faith and confidence in His God. Nehemiah was in close communication (prayer) with God and trusted Him to do what He said.

We cannot be in the work of God unless one hand is in the work and the other is on the weapon (Bible). Even though we are in God’s work we must always be in His word. The two go hand in hand. Do not get so busy in the work that you neglect His Word.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Discouragement from all sides

[10 ] And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. [13]Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. [14] And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. [15] And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work. Nehemiah 4:10-15

Discouragement is heard from all sides. The people of Judah said, “We will not be able to build the wall, there is so much rubbish”. The adversaries (enemy) also had much to say, “They won’t know what hit them, we will get in the middle of them and kill them and the work will stop.” The Jews came ten times and begged them to stop the work because the builders were in danger.

Nehemiah is not just hearing negative comments from the enemies but from the very ones he came to help. It appears he turns a deaf ear and makes plans to continue with the work. He gathers the people and gets them ready with weapons to defend themselves, if necessary.

When done with the preparations to get ready for a conflict, he meets with the leaders. “Don’t be afraid; remember Who is on our side. He will fight for us and our families.” Ever the cheerleader and encourager, Nehemiah speaks comforting words.

The enemy gets word that God is on the side of Nehemiah and the workers. Amazing that the enemies found out that the people knew the plan; this was a day without radio, newspaper or even pony express. They knew because somehow God let it be known. “I will not let you mess with my people.”

I believe Nehemiah was in the center of the will of God. The Lord gave him peace in the midst of opposition.

We serve the same God today; He is with us no matter what we are going through. God is the God of the hills and the valleys. He is with us in the “up” times; He is with us in the “down” times.

We need to be like Nehemiah. Trust in God all the time and He will see you through.

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalm 18:2

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. Psalm 20:7

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Building continues

[6] So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. [7 ]But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, [8] And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. [9] Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. Nehemiah 4:6-9

My last post was about all the opposition that Nehemiah endured. The discouraging words did not get him down, but fueled him to finish the project at hand. The building continued, the wall was joined together, because the “people had a mind to work”.

The enemies were now speaking of coming and starting a war against Jerusalem to hinder the work.

Nehemiah again prays to God and puts “action” to his prayer by setting up a watch day and night for the enemy.

Imagine, if the people today had a “mind to work” for God, not themselves, not for the secular world, but for God.

We need to keep our minds on the things of God. It is not easy since most of us are pulled in a hundred different directions, but pray and ask God what He would have you to do and do it.

[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [2] And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? [3] Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. [4] Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: [5] And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. Nehemiah 4:1-5

Sanballat is not happy when he hears the wall is being built. He is extremely angry and mocks the Jews. He doesn’t stop there but goes out and starts to mock and put them down to anyone who will listen. He goes to his brothers as well as the whole Samarian army. “Just look at what the feeble Jews are doing. Will they really be able to make the wall of the city strong? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish the work? Will they get stones out of the burnt dump?”

His fellow conspirator, Tobiah, is there with gloomy thoughts too, “The work is a mess, if a fox goes up on the wall it will fall down.” Discouragement, opposition, conflict, resistance is on all sides of Nehemiah and the people that are working on the wall.

What does Nehemiah do? He runs to a corner and cries! Absolutely not, Nehemiah does what he does best, prays. He cries out to God, “God turn what they are saying around to be on their own heads, don’t let their sin be covered up. God by provoking us they are provoking you. Nehemiah is not known for “mincing” works. He calls sin, sin.

Nehemiah is on a mission to repair the wall of Jerusalem. He will let nothing stop him.

Does God want you to do something? Maybe He wants you to speak to someone about Him? Maybe He wants you to do something at church? Maybe He is speaking to you about … Only you know. Keep at the task at hand, God is there for encouragement. Don’t be discouraged by what others say.

…for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. [32]And between the going up of the corner unto the sheep gate repaired the goldsmiths and the merchants. Nehemiah 3

The work begins. Eliashib the high priest with the other priests rebuilt the sheep gate and sanctified it (for holy use) the sheep gate is the first place repaired because sheep were used for sacrifices. The sheep were led through the sheep gate to the temple. First things first, it is only fitting that the sheep gate would be repaired before anything else. Their minds were focused on God and sacrifice to Him.

The rest of the chapter is dedicated to the names and the positions of the workers. They were from all walks of life: priests, men of Jericho, goldsmiths, apothecaries, merchants. Families repaired the section of the wall where they lived.

Places repaired: sheep gate (vs. 1), fish gate (vs. 3), old gate (vs. 6), fortified Jerusalem to the broad wall (vs. 8), tower of the furnaces vs. 11), valley gate (vs. 13), dung gate (vs. 14), gate of the fountain (vs. 15), armory (vs. 19), court of the prison (vs. 25), water gate (vs. 26), great tower (vs. 27), horse gate (vs. 28) and back around to the sheep gate. Each person/family had a specific job. All worked with a united goal of completing the wall.

The Lord wants us, as Christians, to work together with a united goal. The goal is to live right before the world and tell others about Him and His great salvation.

Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Philippians 1:27

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Philippians 2:15

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Encouraged by God

[19] But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? Nehemiah 2:19-20

What do we have here? The same two names appear that were recorded in verse 10, but they have another conspirator with them, Geshem the Arabian. I call them the discouragers, you know the type; no matter what is said the next words out of their mouth is discouragement or something negative. They laughed, threaten and yelled, what do you think you’re doing?

Nehemiah was ready with an answer, “God will prosper us, so we are going to get up and start working. [18] Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work. Nehemiah 2:16-18

Nehemiah gives a “pep talk”. I can picture Nehemiah getting everyone together and laying out the plan. Okay guys this is the way it is, “we’re in a bit of distress here, the city is ruined and the gates are burnt down. Let’s get up and build it back up.”

His excitement was bursting forth and everyone was getting energized with him. They all wanted to build up their city. Maybe they put their hands in a circle on top of each other; maybe they got on their knees in the middle of the room. We are not told but we know that God gave them the strength “for this good work.”

Are you discouraged with something in your life? God gives us the strength to do the right thing.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. [12] And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon. [13] And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire. [14] Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass. [15] Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned. Nehemiah 2:11-15

Have you ever traveled a long way? What did you do when you got to your destination? Did you get up in the middle of the night to check out the area? Nehemiah did.

Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem and stayed for three days. He was so intent on what he had to do, he probably could not sleep. He got up in the night and had a few other men with him as he inspected the damage. He checked on everything the gates, the dragon well (may have looked like a dragon (John Gill), the dung port (where excrements were put out of the city). The walls were broken down and the gates were destroyed by fire.

The surveying continued as he checked out the fountain and the king’s pool noticing there was no way for his horse to pass through. After checking out the devastation he returned. Nehemiah knew what needed to be done. He needed manpower and knew where to get it.

Nehemiah had a plan and now he would implement it.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Discouragement?

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel. Nehemiah 2:10

Right in the middle of Nehemiah’s trip we are introduced to new individuals. According to Adam Clark, Sanballat the Horonite was “Probably a native of Horonaim, a Moabite by birth, and at this time governor of the Samaritans under the king of Persia. Tobiah the servant was an Ammonite; and here, under the Persian king, joint governor with Sanballat.”

The revival of Jerusalem as a great and strong city, which was Nehemiah’s aim, was likely to interfere with the prosperity, or at any rate the eminence, of Samaria. – Albert Barnes

Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite were not happy when they heard that someone was coming to help the children of Israel.

Nehemiah is on his journey, but people know he is coming. Even in Old Testament times word traveled quickly, especially when you have letters announcing the travel plans. Some were not happy with his coming and probably were plotting against Nehemiah.

As in our day, there is always someone who tries to discourage us, when we move forward to do work for the Lord. It grieves the world when God sends someone to help His children.

Nehemiah continued his travels and kept his eyes on the job before him. We need to keep our eyes on the job before us, remembering God knows what we are going through.

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me. [9] Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me. Nehemiah 2:7-9

Nehemiah is not done speaking to the king. He asks the king to write letters for him, so he could travel through the other countries without incidents.

He also asked for a letter to be sent to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest so he could get lumber to make beams and gates for the palace and for the wall of the city. The king granted him everything he asked for – WHY? Nehemiah writes the “good hand of my God upon me”, God’s ultimate protection and provision. Here we see the wisdom of Nehemiah, when the king asked what he needed he wasn’t shy (remember he prayed to God and God gave him wisdom).

Nehemiah starts his travels with letters and an army that the king sent with him. Nehemiah was a trustworthy and loyal employee of the king. The king was sending protection, probably so his loyal employee would return unharmed.

What a testimony Nehemiah must have been to his employer. Remember Nehemiah was a Jew and the king was not, but the king respected Nehemiah and what he stood for.

Am I a testimony to my employer? Only I can answer, how about you?

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Sadness before the boss

[4]Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. [5] And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. [6] And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. Nehemiah 2:4-6

Nehemiah is standing before the king, and Artaxerxes says, “What is your request?” One of my favorite portions of scripture is: “So I prayed to the God of heaven.”

Nehemiah immediately prayed to God before he answered the king. Nehemiah did not throw himself down on his knees and pray, it doesn’t appear that he prayed an eloquent prayer, but before he opened his mouth he prayed. I believed he prayed for wisdom to say the right thing. He didn’t have a lot of time but petitioned God quickly.

He asked the king if he could go back to Judah to help with the rebuilding of the city. Without skipping a beat, King Artaxerxes asked him how long he would be gone. The king had already approved his leaving. They did not have the FMLA (Family medical leave act) during Nehemiah’s time. He was asking for a leave of absence from the king. The king was the boss.

Nehemiah gives him a time. We are not privy to the time but historians believe it was between 6 months to a year with extensions following. (Nehemiah was in Judah for twelve years.)

We need to be in close communication with God so we can immediately go to Him. We can’t always go in the prayer closet when a problem arises, but we can always go directly to God.

Keep the pray lines opened before you and God.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

A day on the job

[1] And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. [2] Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, [3] And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? Nehemiah 2:1-3

Our narrative continues in the month Nisan (end of March, beginning of April) four months after Chisleu. We observe a day in the life of Nehemiah as the king’s cupbearer. He brings the wine to the king.

Jamieson, Fausset & Brown Commentary states, Xenophon has particularly remarked about the polished and graceful manner in which the cupbearers of the Median, and consequently the Persian, monarchs performed their duty of presenting the wine to their royal master. Having washed the cup in the king’s presence and poured into their left hand a little of the wine, which they drank in his presence, they then handed the cup to him, not grasped, but lightly held with the tips of their thumb and fingers…

The king notices that his disposition is not what it usually is, he appears sad and disheartened. King Artaxerxes is concerned for his loyal employee and asks “Why are you sad, you’re not sick, this can be nothing but sorrow of heart.”

In that very moment Nehemiah is afraid. He did not want the king to think that he was plotting against him or was unhappy with his job. Remember, palace life during 445 BC was very different than the time we live in today.

Nehemiah immediately reassured the king that he wished him no ill by saying “O king live forever.” He then continued with, “Why shouldn’t I be sad? Everything my fore-fathers worked for is destroyed and vandalized. Even the gates of the city are burnt down.”

Nehemiah is heartbroken for his native land. He probably remembers stories told to him as a boy of his ancestors and what they endured to make Jerusalem their home. He has something in mind, but first he needs to clear it with the king.

To be continued..

Have a blessed day,
Donna

The end of a prayer

O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer. Nehemiah 1:11

The end of Nehemiah’s first prayer in the book ends. He begs and pleads to God to listen to his prayer as well as the prayer of others praying for the same thing. The ones who delight (desire) to revere (fear) your name; God we are trying to follow you and obey you. Please grant me mercy in the sight of King Artaxerxes (this man).

Nehemiah knows he needs to go before his boss, King Artaxerxes, and he asks God for mercy. We now find out the job of Nehemiah. He is the king’s cupbearer.

The job of the cupbearer was a very important and dangerous occupation. The Hebrew meaning from Strong’s (H8248) is causing to drink, a butler. Cupbearers had to taste the food and drink before the king to make sure it had not been poisoned. Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge says: The office of cup-bearer was one of great trust, honour, and emolument, in the Persian court. To be in such a place of trust he must have been in the king's confidence; for no eastern potentate would have a cup-bearer to whom he could not trust his life, poison being often administered in that way…

The end of chapter one, stay tuned for chapter two.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Prayer Continues

Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: [9] But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Nehemiah 1:8-10

As Nehemiah continues to prays, he reminds God of what He has said. [7] We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Nehemiah 1:5-7

Nehemiah starts to pray. He recognizes Who God is, the God of Heaven (vs. 4). He cries to God (beseech – Heb 577 means oh now!) and praises Him for being a great and terrible (Heb 410 – to fear) God. He is a God that keeps His covenant (compact) and mercy (kindness) to those that love him and observe (take heed to) his commandments. Nehemiah reminds God of His word and His promises.

Then, Nehemiah prays, listen Lord and open your eyes to the prayer of your servant (he recognizes his stand before God). I am praying day and night for your servants. He does not stop there but continues by confessing the sins of Israel as well as the sins of him and his family. He then goes on to confess the sins by name: 1) corrupted your word; 2) not kept your law; 3) appointments; 4) divine law.

In a nut shell, Nehemiah is saying, God we have dealt wrong and have not obeyed You.

I usually get convicted when I read the prayers of Nehemiah. He was a humbled man who wanted to do right no matter what. Join me the next time to hear more of Nehemiah’s prayer.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Nehemiah

The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace, [2] That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. [3] And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire. [4] And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, Nehemiah 1:1-4

Nehemiah is one of my favorite Bible characters. He trusted God with everything. He always put God first. For the next few weeks I will be doing lessons on the Book of Nehemiah. I hope and pray that you will enjoy my notes and thoughts on Nehemiah.

Background info:
Writer: Nehemiah
Time: 444 – 425 B.C.
Place: Third and last return to Jerusalem after Babylonian exile
In the Hebrew canon the books of Ezra and Nehemiah were one. It is believed that not until the close of the 4th century did it become known as the Book of Nehemiah. – Albert Barnes

We learn Nehemiah’s father’s name is Hachaliah, though nothing else is known of him. While Nehemiah was in the palace during the 9th month which is Chisleu (end of November, beginning of December) one of his brothers, Hanani, with some men come to speak to him.

Nehemiah was full of questions and concern for the Jews. What happened to them? How are they? What is going on?

The answers were probably fast and furious. The people are in great evil (affliction) and shame (reproach), the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and if that is not bad enough the gates are burned with fire. Nehemiah was overcome with sorrow for God’s people. He could not contain himself. He sat down and cried, mourned for days, fasted and prayed to God.

Imagine if we acted like this when we heard about Christian brothers and sisters who are persecuted today. Unfortunately most of us are so “wrapped up” in our own world that we forget about those who are being persecuted for their belief in Jesus. We need to step out and mourn, fast and pray for our brothers and sisters.

I will look at Nehemiah’s prayer on my next post.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

Goals 2012

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

As I sit and reflect on the past year I remember many things, some are positive and some are negative. As I wrote I thought, negative to whom? The Bible says, “All things work together for good to them that love God …” Romans 8:28

I usually set spiritual goals for myself each year, reviewing periodically to “stay on track”. One of the meanings for the word goal is “the end toward which effort is directed: aim “. My aim is to draw closer to the Lord to “know him and the power of his might” Ephesians 6:10

Today I reviewed the goals I set last January. I kept or surpassed most of the goals. There was one that I didn’t even do, which I will again put on my list. I was encouraged by what I did accomplish.

Do you want to grow closer to the Lord this year? Set some goals. Do not start with big goals but with little goals.

Suggestions:

1. Keep a prayer/praise journal. What can you write? Write prayers to the Lord. Write down answers to prayers. Write down praises, thanksgivings and gratitude to God.

… I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. Psalm 9:1

2. Memorize verses that will help with a problem in your life i.e. gossip, anger, selfishness etc.

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11

3. Read the Bible daily.

I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. Psalm 119:16

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Proverbs 30:5

4. Pick up a daily devotional or sign up for an email devotional.

5. Be an encourager in your corner of the world. Send cards, emails or make phone calls to those hurting or those who need to be encouraged by a kind word or deed.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10

6. Read nonfiction Christian books i.e. spiritual growth, biographies.

Everyone is in a different spiritual place in life. Don’t look at what others are doing, ask the Lord to show you what He wants you to do.

For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. II Corinthians 10:12

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 2Peter 3:18

As you set goals for 2012, do not look back on what you did not do, look forward to what you will do, with the Lord’s help.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

Have a blessed day,
Donna

The end of a year

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Psalm 103:2

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Hebrews 13:15

Today is the last day of 2011. Where did the year go? This year was challenging, to say the least, for my husband and I. We have so much to be thankful for, thanking God for each and every step of the way.

Top 10 blessings of 2011

1. Being saved and knowing Jesus, I don’t even want to think of a year without Him

2. Mark can walk. It has been a hard year for him. There were a lot of setbacks with his back and legs. He walks with a cane because his legs are still numb. Praise God he can walk.

3. My job. In this economy anyone who is working needs to be thankful. I am thankful to have a job especially with Mark not working. My boss has been very supportive during the entire year, with me taking time off or coming in late or leaving early.

4. A home to live in.

5. My children, Sandi, Mark and Rob. I am so thankful for each of them and their unique personalities.

My daughter is a wonderful testimony and help to all around her. She is willing to help wherever needed in whatever situation. She is a great mother with two awesome sons.

It has been a hard year for Mark Jr. and his back, constantly working even though in pain. He has built his business during this economic decline. He is the father of two amazing daughters who adore him.

Rob, my silent warrior, has had some hard times this year, even though he does not say much.

Thank you Lord for each of them and richly blessing us.

6. My grandchildren, Grant, Cassidy, Sydney and Gabe. What a tremendous blessing and joy each of them bring to my life.

7. Living in a free country. I don’t know how much longer it will be free but thankful that I live in the US..

8. God’s precious word and quiet time each morning with Him.

9. Ladies Bible study, good discussions around the word of God.

10. Bible studies at the assisted livings. Thank your Lord for allowing us the privilege of knowing these precious people.

This is a very short list of my many, many, many blessings. As you reflect on 2011 count your blessings, name them one by one.

Have a blessed day,
Donna

December update

It’s been a while since I wrote. When I was a child the Christmas season would start the weekend after Thanksgiving. It now starts at the end of October or the beginning of November. This year Santa Claus was at our local mall on November 12. Thanksgiving doesn’t even register on most people’s radar, why? because there is really no money to be made on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time to thank God for the blessings He has given us throughout the year. Even Thanksgiving is not the same as it was during my childhood. Take time next year to listen to what people say about Thanksgiving, not much of what is said is in relation to God.

As Christians, we need to look at what Jesus did for us. He came as a baby; he had a purpose and a job. We as Christians also have a purpose and a job to perform in this world. Our job is to be lights and testimonies in this dark, sin cursed world. (Phil 2:15) An easy job it is not but a rewarding one it is. What can we do this Christmas season to show others that we follow a kind and forgiving Savior?

We need to be kind and forgiving to those around us. Not acting like harried, frazzled, anxious shoppers that push and shove to get by. We need to stand out and demonstrate that we are different, not just in talk but in actions. Anyone can say they are Christian but the world is watching our actions, to see if they match the words we speak.

Are we squandering all our money on ourselves or are we looking at those in our community and church community who are less fortunate than us? Are there ways we can help those around us? Can we give a gift to a lonely elderly person? Can we buy a gift card at a grocery store to help someone at church who may have lost a job? There are many opportunities for us to share what we have with others. Each one of us is in a different situation, but most of us have money for little things such as a cup of coffee, a new CD, or a new app for an I-phone. This Christmas season ask the Lord what you can do to help someone else.
