Stress Free Healthy Life-Over Weight

People who are stout have lot of problems. There is a saying that people who live a happy stress-free life gain weight. But this results in stress caused by this weight gain. I know about people who were very thin before marriage and gain some 30 to 40 pounds in less than month after marriage. Young people may not worry much about their weight-particularly men.

Losing weight is in the minds of all over-weight people. The calorific value of food and what one eats and how one should regulate food intake are covered under diet practices. Gaining unwanted weight is a problem causing stress. Being stout may remain a problem for many in life. But the efforts to lose weight may also cause additional stress. Even when one is young the weight gain should be monitored and regulated and proper diet and exercise practices followed.

Abhinav Bindra [Images] won India's first ever individual Olympic gold medal on Monday with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the men's 10 metres air rifle event.

Bindra was fourth after qualifying but had a brilliant final round and even hit a near perfect 10.8 on his last visit to pull in front of Henri Hakkinen of Finland, who dropped to bronze with a poor final shot of 9.7.

That allowed China's Zhu Qinan, the defending Olympic champion and heavy favourite, to pass him on his final shot and win the silver medal.

"I haven't prayed so much in my life. With the second last shot they tied together and then he (Bindra) shot a 10.8. It couldn't have got better," he said.

The bespectacled shooter scoring sequence was 100, 99, 100, 98, 100 and 99.

Potato prices are at some of the highest levels in years. It all began almost a year ago when the Pacific Northwest, the source of most of our spuds, experienced record high temperatures in August. During that last month of growth, potatoes gain as much as 50 percent of their size and weight. The heat wave stunted growth and resulted in many misshapen potatoes, reducing the size of the crop that could be sent to supermarkets. That's why we're seeing potato prices about $1.29 per pound when they usually would run about 69 cents per pound. Prices are not expected to drop when the new crop begins, however, because 7 to 9 percent fewer acres were planted with potatoes this year. California already is harvesting its new crop of russets and the Northwest should start in late August. Even at these higher prices, the potato is one of the cheapest vegetables by the pound.

Recently I came down with my first case of poison ivy. And it's a doozy. A trip to the doctor last Monday has me on medication that's clearing it up quickly, though. I'll be happy to see it go away completely! Since this was my first case of the scratchy stuff, I did a little research online and discovered that a lot of the things I thought were facts about poison ivy turn out to be nothing but myths.

You can catch poison ivy by just being near the plants. Nope. You need to have direct contact with urushiol oil. However, weed whackers and lawn mowers can cause the oil to become airborne for a short time, so there is some truth to the myth.

Leaves of three, let them be. This is true for poison ivy, but poison oak and poison sumac are different.

If it's to be on a wooden deck, you need to be sure that the deck can support the weight of heavy appliances and counters, and you have to commit to maintaining the wood surfaces and checking for signs of sagging. If it's to be on a stone or concrete patio, the patio must be pitched enough to let water drain off but level enough for counters and appliances.

What kind of countertop? Concrete and stone make great countertops, but they might require professional installation.

Stanford researchers find hair growth trigger

Stanford University researchers have pinpointed a molecule that triggers hair follicle growth in mice, a treatment that one day could eventually mean some shaggy dos, or at least a few more strands, for humans who have experienced hair loss.

"Loss of hair is not going to kill anybody," said Dr. Peter Marinkovich, the study's senior author and an associate professor at Stanford University's School of Medicine. "At the same time, for some people, hair loss can be a really traumatic thing, especially for women."

Marinkovich said his team hopes to repeat the tests on animals treated with chemotherapy and later on human subjects.

The findings are "important in the long run," Cotsarelis said, calling the Stanford study, "one of the initial steps."

NASA says at least one lake-like feature on Saturn moon Titan is liquid hydrocarbon

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) _ At least one of many large, lake-like features on Saturn's moon Titan studied by the international Cassini spacecraft contains liquid hydrocarbons, making it the only body in the solar system besides Earth known to have liquid on its surface, NASA said Wednesday.

Scientists positively identified the presence of ethane, according to a statement from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which manages the Cassini mission exploring Saturn, its rings and moons

Man shot and killed in East Oakland

A man died after being shot numerous times early today in East Oakland, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. near Canon Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. The man was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was pronounced dead. The victim's name was not immediately released.

No arrests have been reported in the slaying.

Germ warfare moves to the gym

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Our visits to the gym seem to be a lot more dangerous lately. Forget battling only boredom and feeling the pain. Now the fight is us against them -- and the enemy is germs.

To properly fight back you need a three-tiered approach, or so says extra-fit YMCA Group Vice President Kristin McEwen. "The time to de-germ and get yourself primed to fight off gym germs is actually before you work out."

News of MSRA spreading at gyms apparently has taken gym-germ fighting up a notch. More gyms are offering up lots of hand sanitizer, Adams notes, although not all do as much as he wishes they would.

These extra measures add a little more time and effort to her workout, but McEwen believes it's just one more aspect to keeping healthy -- which is, after all, the reason she works out in the first place.

Dan Gordon pushed a lever that opens a tiny, clear plastic line extending from a gigantic fermenter, two stories high, at the Gordon Biersch brewery in San Jose and drew off a few ounces of amber beer into two glasses.

Now there are 28 Gordon Biersch brewery-restaurants across the United States and one in Taiwan, (probably as famous for their garlic fries as their beer) bearing the founders' names even if the two no longer own them.

A mutual friend introduced the men in 1987.

Shareholder revolt against excessive pay gained steam in 2007

After just nine months on the job as chief executive of Rackable Systems, Mark J. Barrenechea last year became one of the top paid executives in Silicon Valley. He also became a target for a growing shareholder rebellion against soaring executive compensation.

"They didn't do anything legally wrong, but none of it was done with shareholder approval," Leza said. "Things like this should go before shareholders."

The company, which had $353 million in sales last year, made that point to shareholders as it fended off Leza. Furthermore, it said it regularly meets with top shareholders, and, Rackable says in its proxy statement, "there has never been criticism of our compensation practices."

Use of cell phones for long durations seems to affect the hearing efficiency and ability to discriminate certain sounds. This is said to be the effect of high frequency audio waves. The ear is getting bombarded constantly and that would make the ears lose their natural abilities. We know that sound is a cause for certain mental problems and the environmental effect of sound is well known.

There is no need for sci-fi to create new and strange animals-in some fifty years every American would look like one such creature, if things go on this way. He may have a robot to guide him and drive him about. Nature never forgives. Emerson had seen only the calculators, when he commented:

Energy Dept. says oil, gasoline will stay high through 2009

OIL'S RAPID JUMP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Energy Department says motorists can expect gasoline prices to remain close to $4 a gallon through next year.

Crude oil prices should remain well above $100 a barrel through 2009, says Guy Caruso, head of the department's Energy Information Administration.
